BERMONDSEY PUB TRASHED BY HOOLIGANS
A Bermondsey pub has been trashed by rampaging Luton fans, as the spectre of football hooliganism broke back into the open at Millwall on Easter Monday. Whelans – a newly popular venue following the recent closure of more traditional ‘Wall’ pubs such as the Golden Lion and the Jolly Gardeners – was the site of a violent pre-match battle, thought to have been initiated by away fans tanked up after hours of drinking at the nearby Wetherspoons pub, The Surrey docks. Eyewitnesses told the ‘News’ that the Luton and Millwall hooligans met at the junction between Rotherhithe New Road and Rotherhithe Old road before the away fans chased Millwall down the road, forcing the Millwall hooligans to barricade themselves inside Whelans, already packed with people having a drink before Monday afternoon’s game. The Luton mob thought to be 20 strong – then started trashing cars outside the pub and throwing bricks through the pubs front windows. The Milwall fans inside retaliated by chucking bar stools out of the newly smashed windows into the away fans. Police were called by both drinkers and residents on the nearby Hawstone Estate and arrived on the scene shortly afterwards. Officers made 4 arrests under the public order act, nicking three very young Luton fans – one aged just sixteen – and one forty year old Millwall fan. All have been bailed to return to a south London police station at a later date. Merv Long, who was behind the bar at Whelans at the time told the ‘News’: “We are normally a family pub before games but since the closure of the Golden Lion and the Jolly Gardeners we have had a different kind of lads coming in on match days. All the windows in the front of the pub were smashed – the stools went through the windows. Our neon sign outside got smashed and both my car and the Chinese womans next door got done over. “The Millwall fans in here were probably between 25 and 35”. It was thought the attack was considered by some Luton fans as retaliation for violence that occurred between Millwall and Luton fans when the Lions went to Kennilworth road in 1985. During the violence around the game 81 people were injured and 31 people were arrested. One away fan who contacted the ‘News’ said “I thought Bermondsey and Millwall was a place to be feared by all football fans, seems to be different now.”

Due to the violence of FCK supporters, police used pepper sprays. Prior to this, supporters tried to burn seats inside their terrace and assaulted policemen. Some cars were also damaged outside the stadium, said local police speaker, Karl Erik AGERBO.
