| Reward offered for info in shooting death of Argentine football fan - 16/03/2008
Source : The Associated Press
Authorities on Sunday offered a sizable reward for information about the shooting death of an Argentine football fan, whose killing touched off weekend rioting that marred the sixth round of the Clausura tournament.
Police said they had made no arrests after Saturday's shooting of Emanuel Alvarez, a 21-year-old follower of the Velez Sarsfield first-division club. He was shot as he traveled to Saturday's game against crosstown rival San Lorenzo, setting off riots that forced the postponement of the match.
On Sunday, Justice Ministry officials said they had offered the equivalent of $32,000 (€20,000) for information helping to solve the killing or leading to arrests. No motive was reported and it was the 223rd registered football fan death in Argentina since 1939.
Also Sunday, a minute of silence was held at football stadiums nationwide during Clausura tournament matches, marking the death. Argentine football has a history of violence. Last June, one fan was killed, 14 were injured and 78 people were arrested in clash between fans of the Nueva Chicago and Tigre clubs.

| Huracan - Boca Juniors - 16/03/2008Source : Lanacion.com + Corrientes Noticias As a Velez fan died the day before, new troubles occured in Huracan, caused by Boca Juniors supporters. At 6.30pm, 183 fans (including 9 minors) were arrested by police forces who found a gun. Several damages were also caused and a van was set to fire. A 44 year old fan was also injured by a knife. He was transfered to the hospital. Arrested fans fulled 3 police stations. About 100 policemen were present, an helicopter and a dozen of police cars were used to restore order. ************************************************************* Source : SBS Boca fan stabbed but game goes onBoca Juniors missed the chance to take sole lead in the Argentinian Clausura as they played out a goalless draw with Huracan in a match once again overshadowed by violence. Carlos Ischia's men were unable to breach the stout defence of Huracan and had to be content to reach 12 points, one below leaders Velez Sarsfield and Estudiantes. The match went ahead despite a 40-year-old fan suffering a knife wound during fights between Boca hooligans earlier in the day. The man, whose name was not revealed, was rushed to the Cosme Argerich hospital in the capital city, while 183 people were detained by police. Alberto Crescenti, the director of ambulance service SAME, revealed the man had suffered a stab wound to the stomach, though it was not thought to be life threatening. The stabbing came just a day after a 21-year-old Velez Sarsfield fan was shot dead before the game at San Lorenzo, which was postponed. ********************************************************* Source: Xinhua At least one person was wounded on Sunday during a brawl immediately ahead of Argentine soccer giant Boca Juniors's match with local league rival Huracan, local media reported, a day after a soccer fan was killed, sparking riots. Clashes between rival fans began in the land surrounding Boca's La Bonbonera (Chocolate Box) Stadium, where soccer-based hooligans known as Barras Bravas (Fight Clubs) meet. Boca's soccer team traveled to the Argentinos Juniors ground in Argentine capital Buenos Aires to play Huracan for the Closing-Tournament sixth-round match. The hooligans used guns and knifes during their fight. The malicious wounding incident came as Argentine police offered a 32,000-dollar reward for information to solve a soccer-related murder that took place Saturday. Emanuel Alvarez, 21 and a fan of Velez Sarsfield, was shot dead on his way to a Velez-San Lorenzo match. Riots following the news of Alvarez's killing caused the cancellation of the Saturday match. In June last year, one fan died and 14 were injured in clashes between fans of clubs Nueva Chicago and Tigre. On Sunday, soccer matches across the nation held a one-minute silence to mark Alvarez's death, the 223rd death that has occurred since Argentine began keeping records on soccer-linked deaths in 1939. ************************************************************* Source : diariouno.net

| Blackpool: Nine identified in football chanting probe - 17/03/2008
Source : Lancashire Evening Post
Blackpool have identified nine fans so far as a result of an investigation into racist chanting during Saturday's derby against Preston North End. Officials at Bloomfield Road have, along with police, been studying CCTV footage following complaints from supporters of both teams.
And a spokesman for Blackpool said anyone found chanting racist abuse would be prosecuted and banned from Bloomfield Road
He said: "We met with the local police on Monday morning as we always do following a game, and following a number of complaints regarding homophobic and racist chanting from both sets of fans.
"As a result nine people have been identified for racist and public disorder offences.
"We will continue to work closely with the police to identify and subsequently ban anyone who has been found guilty of racist or homophobic behaviour."
Police said two Blackpool fans had been questioned on suspicion of racially aggravated behaviour and that enquiries were ongoing to trace others involved.
It is understood that the allegations of racist chanting are aimed solely at Blackpool fans, but North End supporters were also heard singing homophobic songs.
Six people were arrested during the game. Two people were arrested for allegedly using racist language, one on suspicion of carrying stones in his pocket and three more for unspecified alleged offences.
The game, played in front of 9,629 fans, was a drab 0-0 draw.

| Ipswich Town fan given 3-year match ban - 17/03/2008
Source : East Anglian Daily Times
AN Ipswich Town fan has been banned from going to football matches after admitting threatening an opposition supporter.
Robert Reed was punished for his behaviour with a banning order which prevents him from attending any games in the UK for the next three years.
The 30-year-old, of Malvern Close, Ipswich, was sentenced at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court last month.
The offence took place after Ipswich's home defeat to Watford on February 9.
Reed was identified after CCTV footage was examined, which showed him threatening an elderly Watford supporter.
He was arrested at 6.30am on Feb 19 at his home and was subsequently charged with using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.
Along with the banning order, Reed was also given a 12-month community order and was ordered to carry out 80 hours unpaid work in the community.
He was told to pay £60 towards court costs.
Soon after the match, several Watford fans contacted the media, claiming trouble had flared as supporters filed out of Portman Road.
At the time, an Ipswich Town spokesman said: “Ipswich Town Football Club operates a zero tolerance policy with regards to violence.
“We will take any steps that are necessary to work with the police if asked to, to help bring any offenders to justice.”

| Real Betis: BOTTLE SUSPECT RELEASED ON BAIL - 17/03/2008
Source : Sportinglife.com
The Real Betis fan arrested on suspicion of throwing a bottle at Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Armando Ribeiro has been released from jail after paying his 3,000 euro bail.
Armando needed stitches to a face wound after being struck just below his right eye during the second half of the match against Athletic at Betis' Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium, which was subsequently abandoned by referee Carlos Clos Gomez.
A 40-year-old man was immediately taken into custody by the authorities after being identified by nearby Betis fans and, after spending Saturday night at a police station, on Sunday appeared before a judge and was given a 3,000 euros bail which he claimed he was unable to pay.
However, after spending Sunday night in a Seville prison the accused was released on Monday afternoon when the bail was met by his wife.
Saturday's episode was the second time in just over a year that such an incident has taken place at Betis' home ground.
Last February, Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was knocked unconscious by a bottle thrown from the stands during a Copa del Rey quarter-final second-leg match against Betis, resulting in that game being abandoned as well.
Yesterday after visiting Armando, Betis' managing director Gregorio Conejo told Spanish daily AS: "Betis wish Armando a speedy recovery, and that this individual who has caused so much damage is punished with the full power of the law."

Trouble on train carrying football fans
TRANSPORT police were today investigating an incident on a train carrying Charlton fans home after their team's defeat to Ipswich Town.
British Transport Police officers were called in after train company National Express East Anglia reported a disturbance on the 5.30pm train from Norwich to Liverpool Street on Saturday.
It is understood that Charlton fans boarded the train at Ipswich and the incident occurred as it travelled to Chelmsford.
Staff on board the train called police and the train was held at Chelmsford station where officers had been waiting.
A spokeswoman for National Express said: “It stopped at Chelmsford station for about 15 minutes while the police were called to the train but then continued on its journey.
“I gather there was some incident in the buffet area of the train. Some broken glass was found in the buffet.”
The spokeswoman said the company was working with police to uncover what happened but said the reports suggested the trouble had stemmed from the football fans on the train.
“That's certainly something we will investigate,” she said.
“We take security very seriously. We will investigate the circumstances of this incident and seek to address any issues it raises.”
Up to 3,000 Charlton fans are thought to have made the journey to Ipswich for Saturday afternoon's game. Ipswich Town beat Charlton 2-0.
Following the damage the train was taken out of service for repairs but was due to return to use today. The National Express spokeswoman said: “Seat cushions had been thrown around and some lighting tubes had been broken.”
Pc Doug Ford from British Transport Police said the train carried on to Liverpool Street after being held at Chelmsford.
“It was damage to the buffet car,” he said.
One person was arrested at Chelmsford station on suspicion of criminal damage.

| Colombia to crackdown on football violence - 13/03/2008
Source: Associated Press Colombian politicians are demanding tougher action on football hooligans after a riot at a weekend match injured more than 80 people.
The mayhem Saturday, video of which has been played repeatedly on Colombian television, comes after a football fan was stabbed to death in February allegedly for wearing an opposing club's T-shirt.
Congress is mulling two bills that would stiffen penalties for hooligans and increase security in stadiums across the country.
Colombia Representative Mauricio Parodi's proposed legislation would increase prison time for those caught fighting at football matches as well as creating a new police unit dedicated to fighting violence in soccer.
Copying the worst
"In Colombian football we've copied the worst from other countries, such as Argentina and England with their hooligans, but we haven't copied the good, the increased security," Parodi said. "Every weekend that goes by, it seems there's another incident for us soccer fans to be ashamed of."
The bill, which Parodi is confident will pass, also would create a national commission consisting of police, club representatives and the ministry of the interior to study and recommend solutions to the violence.
He also wants to see multimillion-dollar investments in stadiums across Colombia to improve security, such as the installment of metal detectors and closed-circuit television cameras.

| Police alert for football hooligans sneaking out of port - 17/03/2008
Source: http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk
POLICE are to be out in force at King George Dock in Hull looking for football hooligans trying to sneak out of the country when England take on France in an international friendly.
The fixture will be played in Paris on Wednesday, March 26, and many fans will be travelling from the area. The clampdown on potential troublemakers will start five days before kick-off and continue until the final whistle at all air and sea ports in the UK.
The Hull operation is backed by North Sea Ferries bosses. A high-profile police presence will be provided to maintain public order and support ferry staff who refuse to let people on b oard.
All passengers intending to leave the country will be monitored and checks carried out of passports and passenger background where necessary on the Police National Computer and the British database of banning orders.
The details of any suspicious characters heading for the match will be recorded and any person identified as being banned or considered a risk will be turned away.
Everyone in the Humberside Police area who is the subject of a banning order will also be sent letters reminding them they cannot travel and requiring them to surrender their passport at the nearest police station. Assistant Chief Constable Alan Leaver said: "Previous operations – including that ran for the 2006 World Cup – have proved very successful.
"We are supporting this national operation and would advise those people who are not permitted to attend England games not to attempt to travel."

Betis hooligan arrested
Carmelo Pena Rodriguez has been arrested following his moment of madness that injured Athletic Bilbao keeper Armando Ribeiro on Saturday night.
The hooligan threw a bottle from the stands behind the goal and Ribeiro was taken to hospital with blood streaming down his face after being struck on the head.
The Primera Liga clash was immediately abandoned by the referee with the visitors were leading 2-1 at El Manuel Ruiz de Lopera.
Rodriguez is now behind bars following his arrest that was shown live on Spanish TV.
The police recognized the culprit of the attack and prevented him from being kicked by the fans that were in the same stands.
“The Spanish league have to take responsibility,” read an announcement on Bilbao’s official website.
“It’s time to be European and to take drastic measures.”
Ribeiro is suffering from an eye injury that prevents him from training and he will undergo further tests at Hospital de Cruces during the week.
