| Bolton vs Man City: 'Football hooligans' trash pub - 22/03/2008
Source: http://www.thisislancashire.co.uk
A PUB was trashed after rival football gangs met up for a pre-arranged fight, police believe.
Yobs armed themselves with pool cues and glasses during the 'riot' in the Railway pub, Railway Road, Darwen, officers said.
A man was dragged through a window in the mass brawl and several people needed hospital treatment for cuts and bruises, although no one was seriously injured.
Police suspect the football supporters were connected to Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City and had arranged to meet at the pub.
The groups had only been in the pub for 10 minutes when one shouted "We're Bolton" and the fight broke out, landlady Gillian Campbell said.
Some 15 suspects, including four 16 year olds, all from Greater Manchester, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder after the incident at around 6.15pm on Saturday.
Lancashire officers are also planning to speak to football intelligence unit police from Greater Manchester to quiz them about the clubs' known hooligans.
Bolton and Man City had earlier drawn 0-0 in a Premiership clash at the Reebok Stadium.
Mrs Campbell said she had been shocked by the incident and was angry at being left with a £1,500 bill to repair the damage.
She said: "One of the customers saw the men getting off a train and then heading in to the pub.
"They weren't local. One of them shouted 'We're Bolton' and then a riot just broke out.
"People said they were throwing chairs and knocking tables over. Then someone smashed the front window with a stool and a man was dragged out through it.
"The customers and staff tried to get them out of the pub and one of the girls was hit in the face.
"They demolished the pub but we were able to tidy up and luckily we didn't need to close."
The fans left the pub after the incident. Police believe most of the violence was contained to inside the Railway, but that passers-by may have witnessed what was going on.
Detective Sergeant Allen Davies, of Blackburn CID, said those involved were believed to be Man City and Bolton fans who were suspected to have met up at the pub to fight.
He said: "This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable. Fortunately no one was seriously injured as a result of this.
"As there was a large number of people involved I am sure that someone will have seen what happened and I would urge them to come forward."
Jonathon Cox, who helps run the Wanderers Ways Bolton supporters website, condemned the groups actions.
He said: "In all my time at league games I have never seen any trouble at Bolton.
"For this to happen is ludicrous. Unfortunately there are always some people who claim to be interested in football but in fact just use the game as an excuse to fight."
At 7pm today police were granted a 12-hour extension to question the suspects further.
Anyone with information should contact police on 01254 51212 or Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555 111.

Source: http://www.javno.com
Last night’s football match between Dinamo and Sibenik in Zagreb’s Maksimir stadium went through without incident and there were no arrests. The protest in the centre did not record any crime.
However, the police said to be ready to reinforce and intensify patrols in the areas where the young Bad Blue Boys usually gather.
The police today confirmed that the 18-year-old football fan, suspect breaking the camera of a Croatian Television cameraman in Zagreb’s Ban Jelacic Square two days ago, was arrested yesterday.

| Fans bailed after fight - 22/03/2008
Source : Shropshire Star
Twelve suspected football hooligans who were arrested in a series of dawn raids have been re-released on bail as police investigations into alleged soccer-related violence continue.
The men, in their late teens and 20s, answered bail yesterday after they were arrested in January on suspicion of violent disorder in Shrewsbury. They have been released on bail again until April 25.
The raids followed fighting between Shrewsbury Town and Walsall fans at Wednesbury’s Tame Bridge Parkway station on November 10 last year, before a FA Cup match.

| Plymouth Argyle - Watford FC - 23/03/2008Source : Plymouth Evening Herald FANS HELD OVER 'RACIAL SLURS' Two men were arrested during the Argyle vs Watford clash for allegedly hurling racial abuse at the visitors, players and staff. The abuse followed an on-pitch tackle by Plymouth winger Peter Halmosi on Watford's Mat Sadler right in front of the Watford dug-out during the second half. Halmosi, who was on a yellow card, injured himself during the tackle and while he was lying prone on the pitch the Watford kitman Bob Oteng squirted water on the Hungarian. The Argyle fans reacted angrily to the insult, before erupting with fury as referee Phil Joslin showed Halmosi the red card just as he was being stretchered off. Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd has claimed defender Jordan Stewart was then racially abused by a Plymouth fan before being pelted with coins. In one report he said: "Our club doctor was surrounded by Plymouth fans; they were banging on our dug-out and throwing things. "I picked up four or five pounds today." A spokesman for Plymouth police confirmed two men - a 36-year-old from St Budeaux and a 47-year-old from North Prospect - had been arrested during the match following allegations of racial comments being directed towards members of the Watford team. However, police say they have not received any reports of coins being thrown on to the pitch by Argyle fans. Both arrested men were later released on police bail to a later date pending further inquiries. A spokesman for Argyle said the team 'need to take our own counsel' in regard to the red card for Halmosi and the reaction by the Watford staff. The spokesman said: "After each match we have a debrief and we take matters from there. "We do, however, have a zero tolerance policy on racism and have had for many years. It's not tolerated in any way, shape or form, from anyone - from our players, our staff or our fans." The spokesman confirmed that anyone convicted of a racial incident at Home Park would face severe sanctions, which could include a life ban. Police are keen for witnesses to the alleged racial abuse to come forward with information. | |

| Football hooligans to turn Austria inside out for Euro 2008 - 25/03/2008
Source : Pravda.Ru
The forthcoming Euro 2008 Championship is expected to become a disaster for hosting countries, Austria and Switzerland. The Austrians are particularly concerned about football fans and possible riots which they can organize.
Austria’s largest insurance companies launched new services to the local population: soccer vandalism insurance for the period of the European Championship. Damages caused to buildings, gardens, hotel and shop equipment will be considered as insurance events.
Both natural persons and legal entities will be able to effect the insurance policy for the period of the Championship from June 1 to June 7.
Euro 2008 matches will take place in Austria and Switzerland, although Swiss insurance companies do not offer similar services. This is probably because of the fact that the riskiest matches of the tournament will take place in Austria.
Notorious English football fans, known for their passion for pogroms, will not come to Austria and Switzerland. England did not even qualify for the Championship, having made way to Russia . Football fans from Germany, Poland and Russia may pose the most serious threat to Austria as long as English fans stay home this time.
The game between Germany and Poland on June 8 can become the “match of death.” Football fans of these two countries arranged massive riots during the Championship in Germany in 2006. Apparently, they hate each other so much that even the police can not stop them from fighting.
A crowd of Russian fans will be arriving in Austria in June too. Spokespeople for Russian travel agencies say that the demand on Euro-2008 tours reaches record-high levels. However, Russian football fans do not harbor any special hostilities to anyone.
Russia will play Sweden on June 18. Hot-blooded Swedish fans can be very emotional, just as much as their Russian “friends.”
Football hooliganism can be traced down to the Middle Ages in England. In modern-day world clashes between football supporters may often end with fatal outcomes.
In 1968, over 70 people died when crowds attending a football match in Buenos Aires stampeded after youths threw burning paper on to the terraces. A 2002 investigation into football hooliganism in Argentina stated that football violence had become a national crisis, with about 40 people murdered at football matches in the preceding ten years. In the 2002 season, there had been five deaths and dozens of knife and shotgun casualties.
English hooligans have become more advanced in the way they plan their fights, often using Internet forums, mobile phones and text messages. These hooligans often post messages on other hooligan websites to provoke rival gangs into meeting up for fights. Sometimes people at the fights post live commentaries on the Internet.
The first recorded instances of football hooliganism in the modern game took place in the 1880s in England, a period when gangs of supporters would intimidate neighborhoods, as well as attack referees and opposing supporters and players. In 1885, after Preston North End beat Aston Villa 5-0 in a friendly match, the two teams were pelted with stones; attacked with sticks, punched, kicked and spat at. One Preston player was beaten so severely that he lost consciousness. Press reports of the time described the fans as "howling roughs." The following year, Preston fans fought Queen's Park fans in a railway station; the first recorded instance of football hooliganism away from a match. In 1905, several Preston fans were tried for hooliganism, including a "drunk and disorderly" 70 year old woman, following their match against Blackburn Rovers.

| Airport in football thug alert - 25/03/2008
Source : Manchester Evening News
POLICE will target football hooligans attempting to fly to France from Manchester Airport today and tomorrow.
Plain clothes and uniformed officers will stop potential troublemakers from travelling to Paris for the friendly international between France and England on Wednesday evening.
Operation Pinto will also see football intelligence officers rigorously enforcing banning orders that restrict the movement of known Manchester hooligans.
The Football Banning Order Authority has sent out letters to specific people who are subject to orders.
They must report to a police station on match day and surrender their passport.
At the airport, anyone with convictions for violence or football-related disorder will be prevented from boarding planes.
Officers will monitor a number of routes fans can use to reach Paris.
Chief Inspector Robert Tinsley, of Manchester Airport police station, said: "As with all operations like this, we are sending out a clear message to people intending to travel to commit violence to think again.
"Plain clothes officers will be working to spot known troublemakers and uniformed officers will be providing a high-visibility presence at the airport, talking to fans and monitoring the situation.
"In past operations, the vast majority of people approached by officers were genuine supporters who were co-operative and understanding, but we have been successful in stopping a number of known hooligans from travelling."

| Battling yobs face match ban - 26/03/2008
Source : The Argus
Hooligans who sparked trouble before and after a football match could be banned from going to games.
Violence flared in Brighton on Saturday between so-called fans of Brighton and Hove Albion and Swindon Town.
Police last night said they will be seeking to stop anyone found guilty of breaking the law from attending future games.
advertisementAfter the game, 40 officers armed with shields surrounded Brighton station to deal with a confrontation between two groups of men purporting to be supporters of the rival teams.
Missiles were thrown at officers and two men were detained for a short period to prevent the violence escalating.
Brighton Inspector Andy Kundert said: "We had a pre-planned operation in place from 11am for the football match.
"After the game there was an altercation close to Brighton railway station which was dealt with positively and swiftly.
"A few missiles were thrown at police officers but no one was injured.
"With assistance from the British Transport Police, officers escorted those not arrested on to trains out of the city to Burgess Hill, Lewes and London.
"In excess of 40 officers were involved, with many moved from their normal duties to deal with this incident."
The Railway Bell pub in Surrey Street was closed from 5.45 to 6.45pm while police brought the situation under control.
Pub manager Roy Edinburgh said: "The Swindon fans came in before and after the match and there was no trouble. They were as good as gold.
"They went outside and began chanting. Police asked us to shut the pub and get everyone out."
Before the game two men were arrested in Clermont Road next to Preston Park railway station.
Lee Bull, 43, of Ambrose Place, Worthing, and Maxwell Lydford, 20, of Goda Road, Littlehampton, have been charged with public order offences.
They will appear at Brighton Magistrates' Court on April 3. An Albion spokesman said: "Albion supporters pride themselves on an exemplary behaviour record, both at Withdean and away from home.
"It appears the events involving so-called Brighton and Hove Albion fans on Saturday were isolated ones, and it is not even clear if those involved were even intent on attending the match.
"Ever since our return to the Withdean the club has operated a zero tolerance policy on any supporter who is guilty of any antisocial behaviour.
"Any individuals caught in breach of that policy can expect strict sanctions from both the local police force and the football club."
Swindon Town were last night unavailable for comment.

| France - England - 26/03/2008Source : 24dash Police arrest known football hooligans heading for England gameBritish Transport Police has arrested two known football hooligans during a national ports operation ahead of tonight’s England and France friendly in Paris. The operation is the first for BTP officers based at the new St Pancras international train station, and at Ebbsfleet in Kent. BTP Superintendent Operations Dave Roney said more than 1,000 football fans travelling to Paris for the match were expected to travel by Eurostar. "This has been a successful policing operation. We’ve had more than 30 officers patrolling the station and some travelling on trains and working with the French police to ensure that England fans get to and from the match in safety. "As part of the operation officers have detected known supporters in breach of football banning orders and they have been prevented from travelling due to their past indiscretions involving football disorder." Officers arrested two people as part of the operation. A 34-year-old male from New Malden was arrested for breaching reporting restrictions around his banning order. The man was to appear in the Wimbledon Magistrates Court today. A 34-year-old Preston man was arrested in relation to previous football-related disorder. He was served a 21B notice, requesting a banning order be imposed on him, and was to appear in City of Westminster Magistrates Court today. Supt Roney said BTP made no apologies for taking a tough stance against hooligan elements travelling on the railways. "There are about 3,000 banning orders on football fans across England and Wales, however, the fact of the matter is that the majority of football fans are well-behaved, law-abiding people who want to show their support for the national team. Our officers will work tirelessly to ensure that they can do that in safety, without interruption from a few rogue elements that are intent on causing disorder."
