Plymouth Argyle - Exeter City - 09/11/2010

Source : thisisplymouth.co.uk

20 arrested after 'disgraceful' behaviour following Home Park derby match

POLICE have launched an investigation after 20 people were arrested in and around last night’s Plymouth Argyle vs Exeter City game.

Supt Dave Sumner, of Plymouth police, said this morning that behaviour from some football fans was a ‘disgrace’ during and after the match.

He said that more than 60 police officers with nine dogs were deployed onto the pitch at the end of the game as fireworks, coins and other objects were being thrown by fans.

He said that the high level of disorder ‘has not been seen for a very long time’ at Home Park.

He confirmed that police will trawl through CCTV footage as part of their investigation.

It was the first local derby between the two Devon sides for eight years.

Exeter won the game 2-1 in the Johnstone Paint Trophy southern area quarter final.

Police said today that ‘significant tension existed in the stadium during the second half and post match’.

Supt Sumner said that the ‘pre-match phase’ of the police’s operation saw four people from Exeter being arrested in the Golden Hind pub off Manadon Roundabout following ‘some minor disorder’.

He said that seven people from Plymouth were also arrested at the Friendship Inn in Greenbank following a report of a group ‘chanting anti-Muslim chants at some Asian families in the area’.

He said: “That was part of our pre-match phase to try to take the sting out of what goes on at the ground.”

Supt Sumner said that some of those who were arrested were still in custody today and are being interviewed – and others have been released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

He said that, when police review the CCTV footage during the investigation, they will be seeking football banning orders in the courts for anyone who was using or displaying threatening violence in or around the ground before and during the game, where evidence exists.

Supt Sumner confirmed that there were nine arrests made during the game itself. The police have said those arrests were 'in respect of drunkenness and disorderly conduct'.

Supt Sumner also said that a steward was injured after, he believed, he was hit in the face by coins.

He said: “The police and the stewards who maintained the segregation of home and away fans faced violence towards them on both sides – including being struck by coins, fireworks and other objects.

“They did a very good job in difficult conditions.

“It was exceptional in that nine police dogs were deployed onto the pitch before the

final whistle in order to prevent a pitch invasion by those who were seeking to attack opposing fans.”

Supt Sumner said there were more than 60 police officers involved at the game – and they ‘prevented significant confrontation inside the stadium’.

He said: “This level of disorder inside Home Park has not been seen for a very long time.

“Outside, there were significant numbers from the Plymouth side that were waiting for the Exeter fans – some seeking confrontation.

“We had to push those people away from the area before we could then let the majority of Exeter fans progress to their coaches.

“One coach received broken windows. This kind of behaviour is a disgrace and we will be following up on any evidence from our enquiry.”

Supt Sumner said he doesn’t know how long the enquiry will take – but he said it started last night with the arrests.

He said police will go through ‘every minute of CCTV footage’ and ‘any evidence provided to us’ in order to prevent the trouble from happening again.

He said that 60 police officers at the ground was ‘exceptional’ and that ‘all of them were needed’.

He said: “Does anyone really recall this level of violence in Home Park?

“I’m really proud of my officers who prevented a confrontation in the stadium.

“But putting police dogs on the pitch is no light matter. It was completely justified.

“Those dogs were needed later to disperse people seeking confrontation.

“We have not had to do this for a very long time, however the right resources were in place to do it.”

Eye-witnesses said the injured steward was believed to be unconscious after he was reportedly struck by a coin. They said it took at least 10 minutes treating him on the pitch and a stretcher was brought on to assist him. It is unknown as to the seriousness of his injuries.

A steawrd, who did not want to be named, said two of his colleagues had been taken to hospital, adding: “Most of the fans have been good as gold but it only takes a few mindless idiots.”

A source said today that the FA will consider the referee’s report before taking action.

A Plymouth Argyle club spokesman said it is carrying out a review of the events. A response is expected from Argyle over the next few hours.

Police 'failed to stop' Barnsley bar brawl - 09/11/2010

Source : BBC NEWS

South Yorkshire Police have been accused of not acting quickly enough to stop football supporters damaging a Barnsley pub.

Trouble broke out at Harborough Hills Working Men's Club on Vernon Street before Barnsley's game with Hull City at Oakwell on 30 October.

The club's steward claimed police were late entering the premises.

South Yorkshire Police said officers could not get into the club as fans streamed out as a fire alarm went off.

Fans left furniture in pieces, lighting ripped out and smashed glass littering the floor, club steward David O'Halloran said.

'Chandeliers swung on'

He said: "I'd already told police three times I wanted no more fans in and within half an hour we got hit with an extra 150 supporters. That's why it all kicked off.

"There were glass tables going everywhere, chandeliers getting swung on and ripped out of the ceiling."

Mr Hartley said he pressed the panic button for the police to come in, but said there was no response.

Supt David Hartley of South Yorkshire Police denied officers had ignored warning signs.

He said: "Intelligence had given no indication that Hull City fans were likely to cause trouble.

"If we'd expected that this group of individuals was likely to cause the scale of damage that they did... they wouldn't have been allowed to go to the club."

Mr Hartley said police officers had attempted to enter the club to deal with the trouble but were prevented by a flow of people trying to leave because a fire alarm had gone off and people were leaving the building en-masse.

Bosnian Fans Unfurl Nazi Swastika Flag During Match – Local Police Do Nothing

Subtle, huh – and according to reports, local police did nothing to prevent the Nazi flag being raised, nor to prevent chants of “Sieg Heil!”

The flag was held up by NK Siroki Brijeg fans during their recent home match against bitter rivals Sarajevo FC at Stadion Pecara. Sarajevo fans weren’t granted quite the same leniency, as they had brought with them banners in tribute to Vedran Puljic (a young Sarajevo fan who was shot dead, allegedly by a Siroki supporter, during rioting between the two sets of fans last season; although some fans claim Puljic was killed by a stray police bullet). These banners were reportedly confiscated by the police, leaving the swastika to fly in the home end.

Scotland : Forfar Athletic - Peterhead - 06/11/2010

Source : Dailyrecord.co.uk

Referee hit by 11-year-old boy during Forfar v Peterhead shame game

A REFEREE was slapped on the head by an 11-year-old schoolboy during an SFL clash on Saturday.

Forfar Athletic fans were furious after whistler Steven Nicholls red-carded brothers Iain and Ross Campbell, the sons of boss Dick Campbell.

As Nicholls walked off at half-time in the Division 2 match against Peterhead, a boy among a baying mob of Forfar fans whacked him on the back of the head.

Yesterday, Scottish Football Association chiefs confirmed an investigation would be carried out after the referee included the incident in his match report.

Nicholls enraged supporters at Forfar's Station Park when he booked Iain Campbell, 25, for foul play.

A fracas ensued and Iain and his younger brother Ross, 22, were both red-carded.

Forfar officials ordered all supporters to stand back from the touchline for the remainder of the game.

They also appealed to fans, who quickly identified the supporter responsible.

Nicholls, from Motherwell, didn't involve the police as the age of the boy meant he was highly unlikely to receive any significant punishment.

Forfar secretary David McGregor said the club had contacted Nicholls and were waiting for the SFA to handle the case.

He said they had not contacted police and had no intention of banning the boy. McGregor added: "In light of everything that is happening in Scottish football, I wouldn't view this as a major incident.

"It was just a case of an over-zealous young fan slapping the referee on the back of the head. He's upset about it."

But an SFA spokeswoman said: "An incident was mentioned in the referee's report but, at the time of writing, he was not aware the boy had been identified.

"The club will now be asked for their comments and the matter will be referred to the disciplinary committee."

A late equaliser gave nine-man Forfar a 1-1 draw in the match.

Boss Campbell said his side's comeback was overshadowed by the discipline issues. He added that he would be "speaking to" both players who had been sent off.

Argentina : Deportivo Maipú - Sportivo Belgrano - 07/11/2010

Source : larepublica.pe + nydailynews.com

Football fans invade field in Argentina, attack player with knife

Argentine football witnessed another embarrassing episode of violence last weekend, as several ‘fans’ - one armed with a knife - invaded their home field to fight the visiting team’s players during an Argentino A tournament game.

With their team losing 1-0, ten or so supporters of Deportivo Maipú charged onto the pitch and sent players from opposing side Sporting Belgrano scattering for safety after goalie Rodrigo Barucco was threatened with a knife.

Believe it or not, match referee Leopoldo Gorosito decided to resume play once order was restored and the Sporting Belgrano players reemerged from their locker room. Big mistake, since both teams started taking out their frustrations on each other during the run of play, prompting fans to act out again.

Gorosito finally decided enough was enough in the 88th minute, when Barucco was hit in the head by a rock from the stands.

Although nobody was seriously hurt this time, hooliganism has reached critical levels in Argentina, where violence and football go hand in hand.

Earlier this year, a fan of Newell’s Old Boys was murdered, reportedly by dissenting members of his own supporter’s group. During this summer’s World Cup, fans of rival teams Boca Juniors and Independiente who made the trip to South Africa clashed in the streets of Cape Town, resulting in the death of one Boca Juniors supporter.

Birmingham City fans given suspended sentences after derby game violence - 11/11/2010

Source : Birmingham Mail

ELEVEN Birmingham City fans involved in violent scenes following a derby game with Aston Villa have been given suspended sentences and football bans.

During the violence in September last year, missiles were thrown and a bus was surrounded and attacked a court heard.

Judge Christopher Plunkett said: "What happened in this city on September 13 last year was a serious piece of violent disorder."

He said that "mercifully" no serious injury had been caused although it had taken up a large amount of police resources and caused people just going about their lawful business to be put in fear.

The court heard that some of them later handed themselves in to police after their pictures were published in the Birmingham Mail.

Neville Bailey, 39, of Trinity Road Aston and Vernon Jourdain, 41, of James Turner Street, Winson Green had both previously admitted affray.

Trevor Chester, 22, of Kennet Grove, Chelmsley Wood, Daniel Etheridge, 19, of Warndon, Worcester, Michael Harper, 34, of Summerfield Road, Solihull, Glen Hudson, 27, of Stoneymoor Drive, Castle Bromwich, Simon Makri, 30, of Marlene Croft, Chelmsley Wood, Lee Mayors, 27, of Digby Drive, Marston Green, Paul Sheehan, 25, of Sycamore Green, Cannock, Dean Swift, 20, of Water Orton Road, Castle Bromwich, and Kenneth Wallace, 39, of Wallhouse Road, Walsall, had previously admitted violent disorder.

They were all made the subject of three year football banning orders and ordered to pay £200 costs.

Bailey was sentenced to nine months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work.

Chester was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to do 175 hours unpaid work.

Etheridge was given an eight month sentence suspended for two years and also ordered to do 175 hours unpaid work.

Harper received a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work as was Swift and Wallace.

Hudson was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work as was Jourdain.

Makri was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work.

Mayors was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work.

Sheehan received an eight month sentence suspended for two years and was ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work.

Madhu Rai, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court, said the match at St Andrew’s had kicked off at 12 noon and that just before 2pm Birmingham City supporters started to leave the ground while the majority of Aston Villa fans stayed inside celebrating their 1-0 win.

She said as they were going down the Coventry Road a large group of Birmingham fans, which included the defendants, had become disorderly and were gesturing towards the police and Aston Villa fans.

Police attempted to keep the opposing supporters apart and requested the Blues fans to leave the area but they ignored the request and started to become more hostile.

Items, including stones, bricks, bottles and other street furniture, were hurled at the police while officers were also pushed, kicked and spat at.

Police car windows were also smashed and opposing fans, who were on opposite sides of a carriage way, threw missiles at each other.

Miss Rai said there was also disorder in the Digbeth area where drivers stuck in traffic were confronted and a bus, with women and children in, was surrounded and its windows were smashed.

Derby Day: 25 arrests including yobs who targeted police horse with firework

Football yobs threw a firework at a police horse before last night’s Manchester derby, it emerged today.

A total of 25 arrests were made by Greater Manchester Police during the operation to control the City and United fans attending the match at Eastlands.

The game was a forgettable 0-0 draw but tempers boiled over after the game as supporters walked back towards the city centre.

One fan was also arrested on suspicion of lighting a flare inside the stadium and another was detained for having a firework.

GMP said a firework was thrown at a police horse and a bottle was thrown at a police officer.

JT’s shock after rival fans beat up his dad - 06/11/2010

Source : The Sun

CHELSEA skipper John Terry was shocked last night after his dad was battered by Spurs yobs.

Ted Terry, 56, suffered a serious head wound when the hooligans attacked him at a train station.

One thug - with a blue and white Tottenham Hotspur scarf wrapped round his hand - shoved Ted's head into a metal post.

The convicted cocaine dealer was left barely conscious and had to be rushed to hospital.

England ace John, 29, is said to be "stunned and upset" by the attack.

One family friend said last night: "Ted suffered a nasty wound to the back of his head that required a lot of stitches. He is upset he was attacked by so-called football fans purely because his son plays for a rival team.

"John is also very shocked about what has happened."

Ted - now recovering at home in Chafford Hundred, Essex - was targeted at Upminster station last Saturday by Spurs fans returning from their team's 4-2 defeat at Bolton.

They are thought to have recognised the jobless forklift driver because of publicity over his suspended sentence earlier this year for supplying cocaine. Cops investigating the attack are being hampered because Ted has refused to give them a statement.

British Transport Police confirmed: "We are investigating the assault of a 56-year-old man at Upminster station at 10pm last Saturday."

Hearts of Midlothian - Celtic Glasgow - 10/11/2010

Source : dailyrecord.co.uk

Riot cops use CS gas on supporters as Hearts and Celtic fans clash

RIOT police used CS spray to control rival fans as trouble flared at Wednesday night's clash between Hearts and Celtic.

Police said it was used in two separate incidents before and after the bad-tempered game at Tynecastle.

Mounted police had to keep opposing fans apart as skirmishes broke out around the ground in the build-up to kick-off.

The hooliganism came just days after Hibs and Hearts fans marred the Edinburgh derby by throwing bottles, coins and flares on to the pitch at Easter Road.

Last night, a police source said: "The CS spray is only used as a last resort, but the officers clearly felt the violence would escalate if the situation was not brought under control quickly.

"A skoosh of that stuff would stop an elephant in its tracks and probably helped prevent a full blown riot in both incidents."

Trouble started before the 7.30pm kick- off as supporters clashed in Russell Road, where away fans often park their buses. It is understood a cop used the spray on at least one supporter.

And a second cop was again forced to use the spray during running battles in McLeod Street as fans poured out of the ground following the match, which Hearts won 2-0. Police are also investigating reports that a Celtic fan was slashed in a bar.

And dozens of police were involved in a stand-off with up to 20 Celtic fans in the concourse of the Roseburn stand.

It's believed the confrontation started after cops kicked out a Celtic supporter from the visitors' part of the ground.

Police say they had to eject five fans in total during the game.

An inquiry will also look into reports that seats were smashed by visiting supporters, as well as vandalised catering stalls and toilets.

A police spokesman said there were two arrests at the match but more could follow.

He could not confirm the extent of any damage inside the stadium and said the force would liaise with Hearts.

The spokesman added: "Police were required to deal with a number of incidents of disorder before, during and after the game.

"Inquiries are under way in order to identify those responsible for the disorder, and anyone who has any information that can assist should contact us."

The police source said: "There can often be trouble when these two teams meet, but there was a lot of bother even for a Hearts and Celtic game.

"There were times when things looked like they could easily get out of hand before and after kick-off and there were a number of incidents inside the ground as well."

CS spray used to break up match violence

POLICE used CS spray to quell violent football hooligans during clashes between Hearts and Celtic fans in Edinburgh.
Mounted police were also called in as running battles broke out between rival supporters in the city's Gorgie area before and after Wednesday night's game, which Hearts won 2-0.

A police spokesman said: "Inquiries are under way in order to identify those responsible for the disorder"

There were claims that bottles and coins were thrown by the visiting supporters before kick-off. After the game, a running battle between fans broke out in the Murieston area.

Police were also called to a disturbance in nearby Roseburn Terrace, where a group of Celtic fans were assaulted. There were two arrests inside Tynecastle.

Derby game fracas to be investigated by the Football Association - 12/11/2010

Source : Express & Echo

THE Football Association has pledged to investigate trouble between rival fans at the Devon derby.

As revealed in the Echo, there were clashes before, during and after Exeter City's visit to rivals Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday.

City fans caught up in the violence have called for the police to be better prepared when Exeter return to Home Park for a league fixture on December 11.

Now the FA has pledged to investigate the scenes which followed Exeter's late winner in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Area tie.

A spokesman for the FA said it had received the referee's report on the game. It wants to talk to officials from both clubs.

Officials at Plymouth Argyle said they will be working to prevent future trouble at the ground.

Argyle's chief operating officer Tony Campbell said it was looking at controlling the exit of fans from Home Park.

He said the club is also looking at the size of segregation areas between fans in the ground's stands to avoid trouble, and said he was talking to police about how to control the exit of fans.

He said: "There are lots of things we can do to improve the safety of the ground and we will be doing that. I think that this was just a one-off incident, and I don't expect it to be repeated."

Twenty people were arrested on Tuesday. Police have revealed four men from Exeter arrested before the game at the Golden Hind pub in Plymouth for breach of the peace offences were later released with no further action being taken.

Jamie Rogers, 30, from Exeter, was charged with unlawfully going on to the playing area. Jason Farley, 21, of Plymouth, was charged with being drunk in a sports ground.

Both men are due to appear at Plymouth Magistrates Court on Wednesday, November 24. Seven men thought to be on their way to the game, six from Plymouth and one from Chichester, were arrested for inciting racial hatred in the Greenbank area of Plymouth.

At the ground itself, nine men were arrested for being drunk and disorderly. No further action is being taken against three men. Four men from Plymouth, aged 16, 19, 28 and 41 have been released on police bail.

After an emergency meeting, the club decided to release former internationals Yodan Yurukov, Nikolay Domakinov and Milen Petkov.

Crystal Palace - Watford - 09/11/2010

Source : yourlocalguardian.co.uk

Eagles charged with misconduct after crowd trouble

Crystal Palace have been hit with a misconduct charge by the Football Association after fans threw objects on to the pitch against Watford on Tuesday.

Supporters in blocks A and B of The Holmesdale Road stand hurled coins and lighters at Watford players as they celebrated their second goal in front of them.

The charge has led to co-chairmen Steve Parish and Martin Long issuing a lengthy statement on the Palace website calling for fans not to repeat the incident but warning that if it continues then they may be forced to close sections of the ground.

It said: "This is not an isolated incident and the Police are becoming increasingly concerned with the behaviour of some of our fans both home and away - incidents at Reading and Middlesbrough are also under investigation.

"We would like to reiterate that this type of behaviour is simply not acceptable.

"Apart from the danger to the players this type of action will hurt our football club.

"If this type of behaviour continues action will be taken by the club which will result in the closing of areas of the ground which could also increase Police presence on a match day.

"Whilst we appreciate the noise and the colour at Selhurst Park makes it a special place to be, we simply cannot accept anti-social behaviour in any shape or form.

"Supporters who insist on throwing objects, making rude or offensive gestures, persistently standing or taking part in general disorder will be immediately ejected and given club bans from home and away games."
