Police close in on Athens hooligans

Greek police are hoping to begin making arrests soon after closely monitoring more than 200 people in Athens thought to be closely linked to or actually involved in hooligan activity over the last few years.

Hooligan activity has led to one person being killed, dozens injured and the disruption of numerous sporting events, Greek daily Kathimerini’s English-language website reported Saturday.

Sources told Kathimerini that officers have been watching members of supporters’ clubs in Aghios Dimitrios, Ilioupoli, Zografou, Holargos, Maroussi, Kallithea and Peristeri. The clubs being monitored are run by fans of Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and AEK, which are the three biggest soccer teams in Greece.

Members of the Panathinaikos supporters’ club in Aghios Dimitrios, for instance, have been involved in clashes with rival Olympiakos and AEK fans and their headquarters were attacked three times in three weeks.

The most recent raid was on Nov. 12, when a homemade explosive device was placed outside the entrance. Nobody was injured in the attack.

Sources said that members of other clubs under surveillance have been involved in similar incidents and there are suspicions that some of them have links to drug dealing and other criminal activity.

In one of the worst incidents this year, one man was arrested and several cars were damaged in a prearranged fight between about 150 Olympiakos and Panathinaikos supporters in a parking lot in Maroussi, northern Athens, in January. This brawl then led to a device containing dynamite being set off outside the Panathinaikos supporters’ club in Maroussi several days later.

Last month, six people were arrested and charges were filed against another two after raids by police on four soccer supporters’ clubs in Athens led to the seizure of a substantial cache of firebombs, flares, batons, knives and an array of other objects that could be used in attacks on other fans or officers.

Turkish football hooligans who stabbed two Leeds United supporters to death more than a decade ago in Istanbul have finally been jailed, reports the Yorkshire Post.

Four Turkish men have lost their final appeal against their convictions for the murder of Leeds fans Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight in April 2000.

Mr Loftus and Mr Speight were amongst a group of around 25 Leeds fans who were attacked by hundreds of Galatasaray supporters outside a bar in the Turkish capital on the eve of a cup tie between the two sides. They died after sustaining multiple knife wounds in the onslaught.

With the help of CCTV evidence, four men were indicted for murder within a week of the attack, including Ali Umit Demir, at whose flat police found a knife stained with the blood of both men. But even though Demir admitted the offence, the convictions of all four were later quashed.

Following a re-trial the men were re-convicted, but subsequently released on appeal.

Ali Baydar and Demir had both received prison sentences of six years and eight months, Suleyman Gokhan Guven of 10 years, and Yilmaz Tutus of five.

Now, more than a decade after the murders took place, the Turkish courts have finally refused the appeals and jailed the men.

Chorley pub left badly damaged after football fan clashes - 28/11/2010

A PUB was badly demaged and the landlord left injured after trouble broke out between groups of football fans.

Millwall supporters on-route to their match against Preston North End were drinking in the Fox and Grapes pub, Chapel Street, Chorley, at 12.45pm on Saturday when the pub was approached by a large group of Blackpool fans.

They had stopped in Chorley prior to their game in Bolton. Amid violent scenes, two large plate glass windows were smashed, one by someone throwing the pub's 32 inch television through it.

Landlord David Hamer, 59, sustained minor head and hand injuries as he tried to prevent fans entering the pub.

He said: "I've never seen anything like it. There were about 100 fans charging up Chapel Street and tryng to barge in the doors.

"I was trying to stop them getting in and was hit several times.

"The regulars in here had to hide round the back.

"They've smashed windows, the TV, several tables and chairs, the quiz machine, mirrors and even electrical sockets.

"All in all it will run into thousands of pounds of damage."

TJ Nelson, who was working behind the bar said the atmosphere had been peaceful prior to the fans' arrival.

After the incident, glass was strewn on the road outside the pub and blood could be seen splattered on he pavement and outside wall of the pub.

Gerald Parkinson, 54, who runs Parky's sandwich shop, Chapel Street, also witnessed the mayhem.

He said: "Someone could have been killed. There were bottles and chairs being thrown on the street and it seemed like it went on for around 10 minutes.

"I'd seen the fans arriving at about 11am so I would ask why the police weren't keeping an eye on them.

"When they did arrive it had clamed down and they just seem to let them go to he station and get on trains."

A police spokesman said blamed the trouble on '20 or so Millwall fans'.

She said: “We received a call about 2.15pm to disorder at the pub, which appears to be football related.

“There were no serious injuries or arrest.

Four arrests at derby match

A total of 26,532 people attended the match at Carrow Road on Sunday.

After the game, in the interests of public safety, police held back Ipswich supporters inside the stadium for a short time to allow Norwich fans to leave the venue.

Chief Superintendent Sarah Hamlin said: “I would like to thank the visiting supporters for being patient while the home fans left the stadium. The safety of the public is our top priority and I am delighted that the vast majority of fans acted responsibly and respectfully, making it an enjoyable and memorable day for those who attended.”

Four people were arrested for public order offences. Two others have received public order warnings.

Ugly incidents marred Europa League hopefuls CSKA Sofia's 1-1 draw at city rivals Akademik on Sunday with five CSKA fans arrested.

The violence over the weekend was the latest in a series of incidents to mar Bulgarian football in recent seasons with several clubs, including CSKA, receiving stadium bans.

"It was a busy week for us as we also identified and arrested another seven CSKA fans who caused serious trouble after the Europa League match against Rapid Vienna last month," a police spokeswoman said.

Man dies in fight between football fans in Brazil

A 19-year-old Brazilian man has died of head injuries after being repeatedly hit by iron bars during a brawl between dozens of rival football fans.
Police say Otavio Fernandes died after Saturday's fight between Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro supporters in the southeastern city of Belo Horizonte.

The Agencia Estado news service said Monday that Cruzeiro fans were on their way to watch a match when they came across Atletico fans attending another event in the city.

More than 50 fans were involved in the fighting, which also left two men hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries.

Arrests after Pool's Bolton clash

VIOLENCE after the game marred Blackpool FC's game at Bolton on Saturday.

Trouble flared at Bolton Train Station with fans reporting sporadic outbursts of violence between the home supporters and the visitors, who were waiting for trains back to the resort after the 2-2 draw.

In all, police reported three arrests and nine supporters ejected from Bolton's Reebok Stadium during the game, but said the afternoon passed off otherwise peacefully.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "There were three arrests during the match, two of which were Bolton fans and the other a Blackpool fan.

"We ejected nine fans from the ground – six fans from Blackpool and three from Bolton.

"There were no incidents of significance."

Tensions have been rife between the two teams since back 1974 when 17-year-old Blackpool fan Kevin Olsson was stabbed to death on the Spion Kop at Bloomfield Road during a game against the Trotters.

In 1989, police twice had to clear the pitch of Pool fans during a game against Bolton, and the Bolton hire coach was attacked.

After the game on Saturday, fans writing on fan site AVFTT reported outbreaks of violence around the ground following the final whistle.

GeneKelly posted: "Anyone else see that group of about 50 picking up bricks after the game and trying to attack the Pool fans on their way to the train?"

basilrobbiereborn reported seeing: "A ruck outside the railway station which I could hear but not see."

TangerinePepper added: "Didn't really think anything had happened after the match except when we were on our way back in the car. Saw a few Bolton lads running off with the Blackpool fans closely chasing them, a few punches were thrown at the Pool fans but Pool seemed to hit them back twice as hard, the police stopped it and handled it very well."

The game was suspended after only 8 minutes of playing due to the lack of security provoked by local supporters who threw rocks in the pitch and in direction of away fans.
Police responded throwing tear gas and flash balls. Guaymallen supporters were sent out of the stadium by police to protect them.
After 35 minutes of waiting, as the stadium was almost empty, the referee decided to stop the game.
Local club will be sentenced.

Police forces are looking for 4 or 5 Udinese ultras who injured two policemen in the car park of the Friul stadium, just before the game.
With the aim to protect one child and his uncle, both of them wearing a Napoli scarf, policemen stayed with them but Udinese fans threw kicks and punches at his vehicle. One windows was smashed up.
