Leuven moves to enforce one-day ban on Union Berlin fans

Union Berlin fans are not welcome in Leuven or around the Den Dreef stadium on Thursday, when their club takes on Union Saint-Gilloise in a Europa League match.

The decision to make these areas off limits for supporters of the German club was taken by Leuven Mayor Mohamed Ridouani and confirmed by the city's police. “That decision is a stick to catch possible troublemakers,” the police explained.

It is part of the classic strategy in such high-risk matches, police spokesman Marc Vranckx said. “We are now putting maximum effort into communication towards the German fans," he added. "The aim is to make it clear to them that there is no point in coming down to Leuven, because they have no business here. With that decision, people who do make the long trip and cause trouble run the risk of being arrested.”

“UEFA has imposed a sanction on Union Berlin after misconduct in Malmo,” Mayor Ridouani recalled. “That includes not being allowed to sell visitors’ tickets. We are taking measures that will make it possible to take action against Union Berlin’s hard core if they show up around the stadium without a ticket or to ban them from the stadium if they have obtained a ticket for the home team via roundabout routes.”

Thanks to contacts at Union Saint-Gilloise and the Berlin police, it has emerged that some German fans obtained tickets in a roundabout manner anyway.

The decision bars them from the city and Den Dreef area for 24 hours, from 10am on Thursday to 10am on Friday. Identity checks will be carried out at the entrance to the stadium.

The president of the German team called the decision an “incomprehensible collective punishment.”

Cyprus : Two more arrests over weekend football violence - 02/11/2022

Two more men have been arrested on Wednesday in connection with the violent incidents that took place during the Apollon – Apoel football match at the Tsirio stadium over the weekend.

Evidence emerged against the suspects after police published the photos of the wanted persons for the case.

Three others, aged 17, 23 and 25, have been remanded for five days for the incidents which resulted to the latter’s injury.

The violent incidents also led police to revisit the possibility of banning fans from specific games.

Trouble first broke out before the match when Apollon fans attacked Limassol traffic police outside the stadium on Sunday. One officer required first aid for cuts and abrasions while one fan stole the officer’s cap and others spray-painted patrol cars.

Thereafter, a large group of Apoel fans attempted to force their way into the stadium bypassing the entry guards. Police came to the aid of the guards and the fans were slowed and checked as required by law.

Soon after the match began, an estimated 30 fans from both teams got into a fight inside the football pitch, throwing stones, flares and advertising plaques. Anti-riot police, who had been stationed outside the stadium, entered and broke up the brawls, arresting three people, aged 17, 23 and 25.

All three suspects were taken into custody, while the 25-year-old was taken by ambulance to a private hospital in Limassol to be treated for a broken nose.

Following the end of the match, fans of both teams gathered and threw stones and Molotov cocktails at police.

The water-cannon Aiantas was employed by police to break up the crowd and some of the attackers were forcibly removed from the scene.

Earlier this week, police and football stakeholders held a joint meeting to improve things within football teams and fan clubs and prevent future incidents.

Real Madrid v Celtic classed HIGH RISK by Spanish authorities

It's estimated between 7,000-10,000 Hoops fans will arrive in the country's capital.

Spain's State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance in Sport - known as 'Antiviolencia' in the country - have officially made the clash a high-risk game.

And they have now announced there will deploy 1,824 security personnel - almost ONE FOR EACH official Celtic fan for the final game in the group stages.

They will consist of 385 National Police officers, 80 from Madrid's municipal police, 40 from their emergency medical unit, three from the fire department, 62 members of the Red Cross.

In addition 1,254 security guards and stewards will be deployed for the match.

Police evict 40 Glasgow Celtic fans

The National Police has evicted, at the Vialia-Los Llanos train station, in Albacete, a group of 40 violent fans of Glasgow Celtic who were traveling from Alicante to Madrid, and who were bothering the rest of the passengers and workers, according to Renfe sources confirmed to Efe.

According to the same sources, the 40 fans have insulted the staff of the railway company and the passengers who were with them and who have requested a change of wagon to avoid this “unpleasant” behavior. It was the train controller who gave notice to the National Police to get the Glasgow Celtic fans off the convoy at Albacete station, a fact that has meant a delay of 52 minutes in travel time.

Following the troubles which occured in Dortmund between the two teams et due to the friendship between Borussia and Brondby, FCK rivals, the game was classified as a high-risk  one by Danish authorities.

Tottenham Hotspur fans banned from Marseille’s city centre

L’Équipe report that Tottenham Hotspur supporters, who have travelled from London to witness their club’s Champions League game against Olympique de Marseille in Marseille, will not be granted access to the city centre on Tuesday evening.

Marseille host Tottenham in one of the most intriguing matches in the Champions League this week, with the Ligue 1 side needing to win this tie to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League 2022/23 season. According to the police authority, approximately 2,000 Spurs fans are expected in Marseille on Tuesday.

The ban was imposed as early as Monday noon to avoid the possibility of conflicts between both sets of fans. The English supporters will be escorted to the Vélodrome on coaches and buses under the supervision of the local police, while no Spurs fan is advised to be near the stadium and in an entire sector around the stadium between 10 a.m. and midnight on Tuesday.

1,200 German police mobilized for Nice vs Köln

According to a report from L’Équipe, 600 Nice supporters are expected to be present in the German city for the European clash.

In an email sent to the travelling supporters, fans have been clearly advised not to cause havoc in Germany. Otherwise, they would face severe consequences. “Scenes of violence like those in Nice must not happen again in Cologne,” reads the statement from the German authorities.

Devices will be deployed around the city to monitor the situation, and 1,200 police officers will also be involved so that any sign of violence could be uprooted before it spreads widely. Nice’s Ultras Populaire Sud should be escorted under the supervision of the local police, while other Nice fans will arrive at the stadium by train or by car.
