Qatari police push back crowds at World Cup fan zonea - 20/11/2022
Source : https://www.ctvnews.ca/
The fan zone set up in central Doha turned into a chaotic scene on Sunday on the opening day of the World Cup as tens of thousands of fans pushed and shoved against police lines to enter the venue.
Fans were trying to enter the enclosed area that contains a big-screen television for viewing matches, places to buy beer, and little else.
Riot police armed with batons and shields stood guard at the entrance. Some fans pleaded with officers to let them through the line.
"It's very risky. People they could die," said Hatem El-Berarri, an Iraqi who said he was working in neighboring Dubai. "Old people, women, they cannot handle crowds like this. Thank God I'm a little bit tall, so I can breathe. But I saw some kids and said `get them up. They cannot breathe."

Turkish goalkeeper hospitalised in Goztepe and Altay derby game after angry fan storms the pitch and hits him TWICE with a corner flag leading to game being abandoned
Altay goalkeeper Ozan Evrim Ozenc was the victim of the incident as he was subjected to a vicious attack by a supporter of the home team in the city of Izmir.
Following a stoppage in play due to an ambulance being on the pitch to handle an incident in the stands that required medical treatment for fans, Ozenc was in discussions with one of his teammates when the fan made his way onto the pitch.
With a corner flag in hand, he ran up behind the goalkeeper and unleashed a series of aggressive blows with the weapon.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper was hit twice, leading to the corner flag splintering into pieces as the other supporters watched on in disbelief.
After hitting Ozenc in several occasions, the supporter was eventually wrestled to the ground and removed, with the goalkeeper sent to hospital to be checked over.
Given the earlier stoppage for fireworks being thrown into the home section by away fans, coupled with the assault on a player, the referee then decided to call the match off as a result of the ugly scenes.

Rioting breaks out in Brussels during Morocco’s World Cup win over Belgium
Moroccan fans rioted in the streets of Brussels, clashing with police officers, as their team beats Belgium in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Riots have broken out on the streets of Brussels this afternoon, Sunday, November 27, following Morocco’s 2-0 World Cup win over Belgium in Qatar. Football fans rampaged through the city’s streets setting fire to scooters, setting off fireworks, and even flipping a car onto its roof.
Philippe Close, the mayor of Brussels had clearly pre-empted the situation, with around 100 riot cops already deployed in the city while the match was being played. They were reportedly under strict orders to make arrests with trouble presumably expected regardless of the football result.
Brussels has a large North African population and trouble flared even before the game had started. Online footage shows hordes of supporters marching down the street near Brussels-South railway station waving large Moroccan flags and throwing fireworks.
Clashes ensued between the fans and police officers with flares being hurled at the cops as they raised their shields for protection. Fires could be seen burning on the road as well.
“I strongly condemn the incidents that occurred this afternoon. The police have already acted harshly. So I advise supporters not to come to the centre”, said Philippe Close. “The police are doing everything they can to maintain public order.”
