| Angry Lazio fans disrupt training - 01/11/2001
Source: Reuters
Lazio coach Alberto Zaccheroni was forced to interrupt a training match on Thursday after fans angered at the Italian team's poor form staged a protest. About 150 people took advantage of a public holiday in Italy to make the trip to Lazio's Formello training ground and a section of the supporters barracked the players for more than 40 minutes, the Italian news agency ANSA said. Zaccheroni then moved the practice match against the club's youth team to another pitch away from the fans. Lazio were eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday after a 1-0 defeat to French club Nantes left them bottom of group D and without even the consolation of a place in the UEFA Cup. The Rome club, Italian champions in 2000, are in 15th place in the 18-team Italian first division, with just one win from their opening eight games. _________________

| Japan passes bill to bar all hooligans from World Cup finals - 02/11/2001
Source: Reuters
Japan's upper house Friday unanimously passed a bill to tighten up immigration laws to bar all overseas football hooligans from the 2002 World Cup finals to be co-hosted with South Korea next year. Under the revised legislation, all those sentenced to jail terms of less than a year for rioting or violent protests would now be barred entry. Currently only those who have spent more than a year in jail can be refused entry to Japan. The revised legislation would also allow Tokyo to deport those arrested in Japan for rowdiness or to refuse entry to any suspect characters once they had arrived in the country. The bill was submitted to the Japanese parliament a week ago and now goes to the lower house for approval this month. It is hoped it will come into force in March, before the World Cup starts in May. Japanese organisers of the first World Cup finals to be hosted in Asia are expected to obtain a list of known trouble makers from German authorities. They would include the names of those banned from attending games overseas as well as information on crowd control at soccer matches. Rampages in the 1998 World Cup finals in France left 60 people injured. The two host countries have been also prompted to overhaul security plans after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US. _________________

| Four dead and 70 injured in Ecuador - 07/11/2001
Source: Reuters
Four people died and 70 were injured as Ecuador's celebrations for the country's first ever qualification for the World Cup turned to tragedy, the Red Cross said Thursday. The Andean nation exploded with joy after a 1-1 draw with Uruguay on Wednesday guaranteed them a place in next year's finals in Japan and South Korea. But within hours a man celebrating the result was killed in Quito after being repeatedly struck with a bottle in a street fight. Three other people were killed when they were hit by cars as they celebrated. Two died on the streets of Banos, 100km south of Quito, and the third in Guayaquil, 275km southwest of the capital. Most of those injured were also a result of road accidents and one person was injured in a shooting. "Ninety-five percent of these accidents were caused by excessive alcohol," said the Red Cross. _________________

| Racist fans cost clubs dear - 09/11/2001
Source: Reuters
UEFA, the European governing body of football, handed out fines here on Friday to those clubs found guilty of having racist fans. Czech side Sparta Prague were hit with a 33,000 dollar fine after their supporters chanted racist slogans during their Champions League clash with Spartak Moscow on October 10. Portuguese side Boavista were fined 13,500 dollars for the same offence in their Champions League match against Liverpool on October 24. The fine comes after complaints were received by UEFA over the treatment handed out to Liverpool's black striker Emile Heskey. Fenerbahce, of Turkey, must pay 30,500 dollars after one of their fans was adjudged to have thrown a knife at a linesman and a player in the game with Bayer Leverkusen on October 10, while Feyenoord of Holland were hit with a 24,000 dollar fine for another incident involving a knife thrown on to the pitch against Bayern Munich on the same night. Other fines included a 15,000 dollar sanction against Olympiakos of Greece for the poor behaviour of their supporters in the match with Deportivo La Coruna of Spain on October 31. _________________

| Rosario Central - Newell's Old Boys - 10/11/2001
Source: Reuters
The Argentinean derby between Rosario Central and Newell's Old Boys was overshadowed with an outburst of violence committed by the fans. A 32-year-old policeman, Cesar Adrian Juarez, was wounded by a pistol shot, which came from the stands where Rosario Central fans were sitting. Juarez was taken to a hospital, and at present his life is not in danger. This unpleasant incident occurred after the match when Rosario players went to the stands to greet their fans. As they began to throw their jerseys to the fans, some of them began to try to force their way to the field. Policemen were compelled to intervene in the chaos with truncheons. Subsequently, pistol fire came from the stands and the police responded with elastic bullets. The fans rushed from the stands but the doors of the stadium were closed. It was later revealed that the doors were closed after the Newell's Old Boys fans had left the stadium, with the aim of avoiding disorder outside the stadium. _________________
