Mansfield cops 'treated us like animals'
Supporters have their say after violence flares at Hatters away match Police have been accused of unprovoked attacks on Luton Town football fans as trouble flared at Saturday s away match against Mansfield.
Officers drew their batons before and during the Division Three game as they clashed with sections of the Hatters 2,160-strong travelling support.
Eleven people, eight from the Luton area, were arrested and two policemen were injured when missiles were thrown.
One needed stitches in a cut to his face after he was hit by a bottle.
Nottinghamshire Police had to call in reinforcements from other parts of the county to keep Luton and Mansfield followers apart.
But several supporters blame "heavy-handed" police for the disturbances.
Wayne Hymus, 21, of Minorca Way, Lewsey Farm, said: "They treated us like animals. "They pulled out their coshes and started hitting people for no reason."
A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said: "There was a lot of unruly behaviour and officers had to draw their batons at one stage to restore order.
"Luton supporters were escorted to the match without serious incident, but missiles were thrown during the game at other sections of the crowd, match officials and the police.
"At one stage Mansfield fans were throwing stones at Luton supporters as they boarded their train, so it was a pretty bad day all round.
"We have received no complaints about police actions."

COPS BATTLE CELTS FANS
DOZENS of Celtic fans battled with Spanish riot police outside Valencia's Mestalla Stadium last night.
Cops, including some on horseback, charged after violence broke out between the two sets of supporters in a bar.
One Celtic fan appeared to be seriously hurt and police shielded him until an ambulance arrived.
Patrick Bradley, 22, from Glasgow, claimed he'd been beaten into line.
He said: "A police officer started hitting me with a baton for no reason." Furious Celtic followers claimed they had to run a gauntlet of hate as they made their way to the crunch Euro tie.
They told of bottles, cans and glasses raining down on them as ground.
One furious Celtic supporter stormed: "The police were right out of order.
"They cordoned off the Celtic fans and battered into them.
"They did not even try to stop Valencia fans hurling missiles as we walked from our buses to the stadium."

Rioting fans tear-gassed
POLICE used CS gas to break up a pitched battle between rival football thugs in Edinburgh at the weekend.
Passers-by fled in terror as 60 Hearts and Celtic fans clashed in running street battles.
Police from all over the city were called into action to deal with the trouble which centred on Haymarket.
Officers today described the trouble as the worst outbreak of violence they had seen after a match in the Capital in years.
Scores of supporters were involved in the riot, which broke out at 8pm on Saturday.
Passers-by ran for cover as fans punched and kicked each other and hurled bricks and missiles.
One eyewitness claimed that Hearts fans at the Ardmillan Hearts Club had clashed with Celtic fans at the nearby Gaelic Club.
He said: "Fans came out of the Ardmillan Hearts Club and went to the nearby Gaelic Club. About 20 of them began hurling bricks, bottles.
"Celtic fans poured out and there was a running battle. "
Another passer-by said: "Dozens of men came running down Dalry Road where they were confronted by another group.
"Fighting broke out and bricks and bottles were thrown, although police arrived within minutes. A number of people were arrested and taken away."
There were also reports of fighting between rival fans at Roseburn and outside Tynecastle immediately after the match.
A Gorgie resident said: "There were fights outside the ground after the game and another in Roseburn. It is the first time I've seen this in Edinburgh since the 1980s. It's very frightening."
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders said: "Over the last couple of years there have not been so many problems with serious trouble after the games.
"We hope that this may be a one-off."
He added: "CS gas was used by officers. About 60 fans were involved. Officers from all over the city attended.
"I would anticipate that there will be a number of arrests."
He said no officers had been injured, despite eyewitness accounts of a policewoman being punched on the face.
Haymarket has often been a trouble-spot, with travelling supporters waiting for trains mixing with Edinburgh fans. The last major outbreak of violence at Haymarket happened in 1997, when Dundee United and Aberdeen fans clashed after a Cup semi-final tie.
Senior police officers warned at the start of the football season they were concerned about a new generation of football hooligans.
Chief Superintendent Jim Pryde said thugs reminiscent of the infamous "football casuals" were once again being seen at Premier League matches.
Announcing a crackdown on hooliganism, Chief Superintendent Pryde, the force's head of operations, said: "What we are seeing is a new breed of football hooligan. I do not like using the word casuals, but this looks like the re-emergence of a similar problem. It is a nationwide problem which is beginning to emerge in the Lothians."
Casual crews such as the CCS (Capital City Service), who were linked to Hibs, and the CSF (Casual Soccer Firm), linked to Hearts, caused violence in the 1980s and 1990s, but the problem seemed to disappear as those involved grew older.
Earlier this season Lothian and Borders Police's anti- hooliganism initiative, Operation Turfed Out, saw officers tackling drink-related violence outside Tynecastle, Easter Road and Almondvale
