Six Saints fans face court over Pompey FA Cup clash violence - 01/11/2010
Source : portsmouth.co.uk
Six men have appeared in court charged with violent disorder following Pompey's FA Cup victory over Southampton.
The accused - all Saints fans - are alleged to have 'painted a picture of pure hatred' towards Portsmouth fans outside St Mary's Stadium in Britannia Road, Southampton.
Martyn Bishop, 43, of Wheatlands, Fareham; Ross Phillips, 28, of Swift Road, Southampton; Timothy Osman, 49, of Cunard Avenue, Southampton; Trevor Collins, 46, of Meggeson Avenue, Southampton; and Michael Wilson, 29, of New Road, Netley Abbey, are all charged over trouble that flared between rival fans at the Citroen Freeborn Garage in Britannia Road, after Pompey defeated Southampton 4-1 on February 13.
All five men today denied a charge of violent disorder at Southampton Crown Court.
Pompey fans Keith Strevett and Robert Graeney were both injured after being hit by missiles thrown by fans after leaving the ground.
Martyn Booth, prosecuting, said: 'The violence and the threats of violence that were being used were indiscriminate in their nature.
'They were completely unprovoked and completely unnecessary.
'The Southampton fans we would suggest, had deliberately placed themselves at that garage forecourt on that day, and the picture that was painted together, by all of them acting together, is a picture of unadulterated anger and, using both threats and gestures of violence and actual violence in order to intimidate and frighten both the Portsmouth fans and anybody who happened to be in that particular area.
'They painted a picture of pure hatred towards the Portsmouth fans and it is fair to say some of the Portsmouth fans reciprocated and were as bad.
'We would say these defendants were part of those scenes at that garage on that day.'
The 12-strong jury were shown aerial footage from Hampshire Constabulary's spotter plane that was taken at the scene.
The video showed fans trying to break through a metal barrier at the Britannia Road entrance to Freeborn Garage as police officers in fluorescent yellow jackets tried to keep them back.
Some fans through debris and missiles including a plastic chair over the fence.
A six man, Peter Smithson, 36, of Adams Close, Hedge End, today pleaded guilty to a charge of violent disorder for his part in the incident.
The trials is expected to last at least two weeks.

French league upholds Marseille fan ban due to security fears over PSG game - 02/11/2010
Source : The Canadian Press
Marseille fans remain banned from Sunday's match at fierce rival Paris Saint-Germain after the French football league turned down an appeal from Marseille on Tuesday.
PSG fans were also banned from the game at Marseille's Stade Velodrome on March 19.
The French league said security fears were too great, and it explained its concerns in a meeting with Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier, the club's chief of security Guy Cazadamont, and PSG vice-president Phillipe Boindrieux.
Last season, there were major clashes in the Marseille city centre between the teams' supporters, and Marseille fans were subsequently banned from attending the return match in Paris.
But factions of rival PSG fans fought each other in the streets around PSG's Parc des Princes and a 38-year-old supporter died after serious head injuries and a coma.
Marseille wanted to bring around 1,500 fans this weekend, and Boindrieux raised the point of how "Marseille's buses and the arrival of the fans toward the Parc des Princes" could be safely assured.
Two seasons ago, Marseille's team bus was pelted with bottles as it passed PSG thugs gathered on a road about 1.5 kilometres from the stadium, and in 2004 Marseille's driver had a narrow escape when a rock cracked the front window of the team bus.
The issue was also considered at government level, with the Interior Ministry noting its concerns in a letter received by the LFP on Tuesday.
The ministry, according to the LFP, said banning Marseille fans from coming "seems more than ever indispensable" and that any other decision could not "guarantee security in such a game."
PSG has disbanded numerous volatile supporters groups from both ends of the stadium, the Kop Boulogne and Tribune Auteuil. Boulogne has long harboured far-right extremists among its hardcore hooligans and they clashed with mixed-race members of Auteuil factions last February before the Marseille game.
The International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism said about 120-140 Boulogne hooligans chanted racist slogans as they turned a corner and attacked fans outside the Auteuil end, which then led to ripostes and prolonged skirmishes in the surrounding streets.

Major police operation planned for Thursday’s Liverpool v Napoli return leg - 02/11/2010
Source : Liverpool Echo
A MAJOR police operation has been planned for the visit of Napoli to Anfield ahead of this Thursday’s Europa League match.
Officers are on high alert after three Reds fans were stabbed and others scarred in the Italian city a fortnight ago as packs of Ultras targeted Liverpool supporters in the streets and bars before the first leg game.
Now, with suggestions 7,000 Napoli fans could be heading for Liverpool, with just a 2,600 allocation set aside in the stadium, security will be raised.
Italian police will be in the city on Thursday working with Merseyside officers to prevent disorder.
Seven charter flights will arrive at Liverpool John Lennon Airport carrying Napoli fans where a strong police presence is expected.
No escort is planned to transport them to the city centre, and later to Anfield, although extra resources will be deployed by the force outside the ground and centre of Liverpool.
Napoli’s ticket allocation was sold out in a couple of hours and evidence of Italians trying to buy seats in Liverpool FC sections by enrolling as fan card members has been identified and stopped by the club.
The game has been classed at a higher category to the previous European home game against Steau Bucharest by Merseyside Police.
But officers were keen to play down suggestions football fans from other English clubs were interested in heading for Anfield after violent clashes with Italian rivals in recent months and years.
Chief Superintendent Dave Lewis, of Merseyside Police, said: "Thursday’s match will be policed similarly to other matches and takes account of recent incidents in Naples.
“However I would like to reassure matchgoers that there is no current intelligence to cause concern.
"There will be no tickets on sale for the game on the day of the match. I would advise anyone who wishes to attend to purchase a ticket before Thursday.
"I am aware that there were some disorder issues in Naples during the last game. We take this type of behaviour very seriously and will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour.”

Serbian hooligans threating with mayhem in Split - 02/11/2010
Source : Croatian Times
Bands of hooligans from Serbia are threatening to join up with Russian fans and cause mayhem at the upcoming match between Hajduk and Saint Petersburg Zenit in Split.
The Serbian press has warned that members of almost all of Belgrade’s football fanclubs and several nationalist organizations are planning on coming down for the Europa League match scheduled on Thursday to cause trouble. If the police fails to prepare for the possible onslaught, a "great tragedy" could occur, they write.
One of the members of a fanclub told the Belgrade’s tabloid Kurir:
"It is no secret that our Orthodox brothers before going to Croatia will stop by in Belgrade. We expect them today or tomorrow, and then together we are going to Split. I would not want to disclose details, except that there will be enough of us to destroy and burn down the entire city of Split."
The Hajduk’s fans known as Torcida will not likely take this lying down. "Torcida have been getting ready for days to take revenge on Russian hooligans," Serbian media writes.
Less than two weeks ago violence occured as Hajduk was playing in St. Petersburg.

Rangers fans accused of urinating on Valencia's supporter's section
Rangers fans literally marked their territory at the Estadio Mestalla during Tuesday night’s 3-0 Champions League loss to home side Valencia, according to El Mundo.
Local authorities accused a handful of Gers supporters of urinating on a group of Valencia fans sitting a level below them, an action that obviously wasn't too well received.
Police were able to keep both sides separated and avoid a violent confrontation, but they couldn’t stop the infighting amongst Rangers fans, as several altercations between them were also reported.
Amazingly, no arrests were made, and only four Scottish supporters were ejected from the stadium for trying to smuggle in alcohol.
Of the 3,600 or so Rangers fans who made the trip to Spain, the majority of them immediately returned home after the game, while a smaller group descended upon the town of Benidorm to continue their night of entertainment.

Liverpool fans clash with Napoli supporters
Italian football fans were involved in clashes with Liverpool supporters after Napoli lost at Anfield in last night's Europa League match.
Around 40 Napoli supporters attacked a group of Liverpool youths shortly after watching their side lose 3-1, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Police vans and officers on horseback tried to contain the chaos which broke out on Walton Lane, near Everton's ground Goodison Park.
Witnesses claim to have seen a group of young Italian men charging at the youths shouting 'F*** Liverpool'.
One individual told reporters: 'They've got their belts wrapped round their hands with the buckles hanging down ready to swing and get people.
'They look organised, with their faces covered and hoods up, like they've done this kind of thing before.'
Six Liverpool fans and one Napoli fan were arrested prior to last night's game, which was declared a high-risk match following a series of clashes between the two teams' fans last month.
When Liverpool faced Napoli at the Italian side's Stadio San Paolo ground, three Liverpool fans were admitted to hospital with stab wounds, while four others were also injured.
Italian police confirmed that three people had been arrested as a result of the violence which broke out after the 0-0 draw.

Court in Genoa refused to release Serbian football fans - 06/11/2010
Source: ANSA
Court in Genoa rejected request to release four, out of eight, Serbian football fans, arrested after the riots due to which football match between Italian and Serbian representations was terminated, Italian news agency Ansa reported.
The review court of Genoa has turned down the bail request made last week by the legal team of four of the eight Serbian ultras arrested after clashes at the Luigi Ferraris stadium, which led to the abandonment of the match between Italy and Serbia. The four fans are accused of resisting public officials and a steward.
After the clashes, four more ultras were arrested, including Ivan Bogdanov. The men are accused of a number of offences, ranging from aggravated criminal damage and grievous bodily harm to violations of stadium safety regulations and public order offences.

Drunk football thug bit attacker in brawl after Port Vale game - 06/11/2010
Source : thisisstaffordshire.co.uk
A MAN became involved in a drunken brawl just hours after invading the pitch at Vale Park.
Jamie Sherratt bit a man during the disturbance in Burslem town centre, which followed Port Vale's match against Shrewsbury Town on May 8.
The 24-year-old received an eight-month suspended prison sentence at Stafford Crown Court yesterday, after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding.
Sherratt, of Edison Road, Stafford, had previously been fined £170 by magistrates for his involvement in the pitch invasion which followed the end-of-season encounter at Vale Park.
He was one of several football fans to remain in Burslem after the match, and at around 6.40pm, he and a friend became involved in a domestic argument between Nigel Thyne and his partner Cheryl Ash.
A physical confrontation between the two groups ensued, during which Sherratt was knocked to the ground.
As he attempted to defend himself, Sherratt bit Mr Thyne in the lower abdomen, breaking the skin and drawing blood.
David Bratt, defending, said the defendant, who had a number of previous convictions for violent offences, had not been solely to blame.
Mr Bratt said: "In this incident, I would say he was as much sinned against as sinner.
"Mr Sherratt does appreciate that he has issues and he accepts that he was not entirely blameless for what happened. He knows he has to address these issues if he is to avoid appearing before the court again."
Sherratt was one of 17 hooligans who were charged for their involvement in the violence that followed the Vale-Shrewsbury match.
He was not arrested at the scene but was later identified by police after being captured on CCTV.
At the earlier hearing, Sherratt admitted using threatening and abusive words or behaviour and invading the pitch, and was fined £85 for each offence. He was also given a four-year football banning order.
Judge Paul Glenn said the fact that he had stayed in Burslem town centre after the trouble did not reflect well on Sherratt.
He told the defendant: "You had been drinking and taking drugs, and you had already been in trouble for going on the pitch at Port Vale.
"The fact that you were still hanging around Burslem town centre at 6.40pm, and getting involved in further criminal activity, speaks volumes about you."
Judge Glenn suspended Sherratt's sentence for two years and ordered him to complete 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also told to pay £200 compensation to Mr Thyne, as well as £500 towards prosecution costs.

Marseille's Heinze blasts authorites over fan ban - 05/11/2010
Source : AFP
Marseille's Argentine international defender Gabriel Heinze on Friday blasted a decision to deny access to visiting fans for Sunday's crunch showdown with old rivals Paris St Germain at the Parc des Princes, accusing the authorities of "knowing nothing about football."
"There are things going on which I don't like. Without fans there is no spectacle - and football is about the fans. I don't like playing like this (without visiting fans)," said the former PSG, Manchester United and Real Madrid defender after police backed a French League (LFP) move to keep visiting fans out.
"The person who has decided this knows nothing about football and as for it being a 'clasico', well it's the supporters who make a real 'clasico'", Heinze said.
He made his comments after the Paris police prefecture wrote to PSG officials saying that, given a perceived threat to public order, the visitors enclosure would be closed to away fans - upholding an earlier decision by the French League.
The initial LFP decision indicated that away fans would not be admitted either to Sunday's game or March's return match at Marseille's Stade Velodrome.
Heinze was biting in his criticism of the decision.
"I agree that security should be paramount in life but in that case why not play in the afternoon, which carries less risk? The match is at 9pm as it's television which holds the whip hand there and everyone knows that," he insisted.
Marseille coach Didier Deschamps also criticised the move to deny access to travelling fans.
"A big game of football, whether in Germany, Italy or Spain, is played in a stadium packed with fans from the two teams," said the 1998 World Cup-winning French captain.
"So it's somewhat nonsensical that we can't have Marseille fans here and the Parisians can't come to the Velodrome.
"From the players and backroom staff's point of view, we're obviously aware of the frustration and anger of all Marseille fans who would delight in travelling up to cheer us on for this match."
He added: "There's Milan-Juventus, Barca-Real Madrid, games with rivalry and hatred, but that happens. I think we should be capable of reaching that point in France as well.
"Moreover, we're going to organise Euro 2016 when security will have to be ensured."
A Marseille court was set later Friday to examine the LFP move which came as the latest round in a bout of legal ping-pong between the game's authorities and the courts.
Last month, a Marseille court suspended an initial LFP decision to ban Marseille fans from their club's match at Paris Saint-Germain on November 7 after nine Marseille supporters groups contested the legality of the decision.
PSG and reigning champions Marseille are France's two best-supported teams and recent matches between the clubs have been marred by fan violence.
Supporters clashed in central Marseille in October 2009 after a league game between the clubs was cancelled at short notice due to an outbreak of swine flu in the Parisians' squad.
Marseille fans were banned from travelling to the return match, in February this year, but rival groups of PSG supporters fought each other after the game and one fan was beaten to death.

Sicily Derby Between Palermo & Catania Open To All Fans - 04/11/2010
The Sicilian derby between Palermo and Catania next Sunday will be open to fans of both teams for the first time in three years.
The CASMS (observatory for national sports manifestations in Italy) has decided to allow Catania fans to travel to Palermo, but only if they possess the fan's ID card.
Those in possession of the card will be able to buy tickets in Catania and then travel to the game.
It's a move which has raised eyebrows as the game has been labelled as a 'high risk' event given the rivalry between fans of the clubs.
Recent derbies have been played with just the home fans allowed access - those measures were put in place following the death of police inspector Filippo Raciti, who was killed during rioting in February 2007.

Police say that Liverpool fans caused the riots against Napoli - 07/11/2010
Source : footylatest.com
I wrote a post yesterday saying that wayward Napoli “hooligans” had come to Liverpool on Thursday night to cause trouble, but the police have now issued a statement saying that the trouble around Anfield was caused by a small minority of Liverpool supporters.
The problem was exacerbated by the fact that over 500 Napoli fans were sold tickets for the Liverpool end at Anfield, and were subsequently refused permission to enter. This meant that they were wandering around outside the ground until after the game.
Chief superintendent Dave Lewis, who was in charge of security at the ‘high risk’ game, said: “They bought them from what had been seen as reputable tour companies,”
“Somebody, somewhere, was able to get tickets and put them on sale through these companies. We need to look further into that to see how that happened.”
There were three arrests inside the ground, and another four afterwards when the rival fans clashed in Walton Lane, near Goodison Park, and Lewis is certain where the blame lied.
He said: “A minority of Liverpool supporters were intent on having an attack on the Napoli supporters. We had a large focus on Liverpool supporters who are known to us. They were seeking problems. Napoli fans had not come looking for trouble. But as trouble started they were not ones to back away from it.”

Five arrested at Cardiff v Swansea football derby
Five arrests were made at the Cardiff City v Swansea City football derby on Sunday afternoon.
Two fans were arrested for invading the pitch at the game which saw the visitors Swansea beat their south Wales promotion rivals 1-0.
Three arrests were made after the game - one for a public order offence, one for assault and one for possession of drugs.
South Wales Police said the event was "well policed".
All five men arrested remain in police custody.
Inspector Dan Howe said: "We have made five arrests out of more than 27,000 fans at the game which is a relatively small number compared to previous years.
"Extra officers remain on duty in Cardiff and Swansea to deal with any later incidents that may arise following the match."
Cardiff City Stadium hosted the 59th meeting between the two rival sides.

Swiss fans protest by making it rain tennis balls (twice)
Fans of Swiss Super League leaders FC Basel and second place FC Luzern thought the match between their two clubs should have been the most important sporting event in all of Switzerland on Sunday. So, when a Swiss TV company arranged to have kickoff moved up to 12:45 p.m. to ensure the match would be over in time for the 3 p.m. start of the ATP Basel tournament final between Novak Djokovic and local boy Roger Federer (who is also FC Basel's most famous fan), the fans of the two football clubs were not pleased.
To express that displeasure and attempt to delay the match into overlapping with the tennis final, they hurled a massive amount of tennis balls on the pitch shortly after the match began. And once stadium staff picked them all up, the clever fans did it again, forcing another delay.
In the end, FC Basel delighted their supporters by coming up with a late goal to retain the top spot with a 1-1 draw and Roger Federer beat Djokovic to win the ATP Basel title for the fourth time in five years.
