Potential disorder at Boro’s match against Millwall was averted thanks to effective policing, it was claimed today.
Cleveland Police say Saturday’s home game was “an extremely well policed match” with no serious incidents.
One Millwall fan was arrested after the match, at which there was a large police presence.
He was arrested by British Transport Police in the subway at Middlesbrough railway station while being escorted back to the train.
A police spokeswoman said: “This was an extremely well policed match and we reduced the opportunity for disorder and prevented any serious incidents occurring.
“We feel it could not have gone better on the day. This was due to meticulous planning with the club and other police forces.
“We worked closely with neighbouring police forces in Durham and North Yorkshire and there were some Met (Metropolitan Police) officers present as well.”
Boro were defeated 1-0.

Fights start at Shrewsbury Town v Hereford United game
Five people have been arrested over public order offences after more than 100 people were caught up in trouble at a Football League match in Shropshire.
Fighting began in the first half between rival Shrewsbury Town and Hereford United fans at Shrewsbury's Greenhous Meadow on Tuesday night.
West Mercia Police said a few police officers and club stewards had been assaulted.
Fans from both clubs were arrested and held in custody on Wednesday.
Ch Insp Martin Whitelegg said the club had its own stewards but called for police back-up in the first half to help restore order.
About 25 police officers were deployed to the football ground.
Ch Insp Whitelegg said West Mercia Police would speak to Shrewsbury Town about its future stewarding of League Two matches.
"We will be conducting investigations into what happened and to identify the offenders. This will include examination of CCTV to trace the offenders who will be dealt with for offences of affray and public order," he added.

Spartak Moscow - Marseille - 23/11/2010
Source : The Moscow News
Fans slam 'gutless' Spartak
Spartak’s Champions League dream is over – and fans of the Red-and-Whites were quick to show their fury.
Already disgruntled after a humiliating derby day loss to 10-man CSKA, a 3-0 hammering at home to Marseille was the final straw for many.
Long before the final whistle supporters were streaming out of Luzhniki, throwing their scarves aside in disgust.
While stewards – who are supplied by the Spartak supporters’ club – tried to persuade them to stay and encourage their team to an unlikely comeback, a banner (pictured above) was unfurled reading: “Your gutlessness will become legendary!”
And more than 100 fans were arrested after disturbances between stewards and fleeing fans when Marseille scored their second goal, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.
Police chief Vyacheslav Khaustov told the tabloid that the arrests were mostly for drunkenness, hooliganism, attempting to bring fireworks into the stadium and ticket touting.

Anderlecht - Charleroi (combi bus for away fans)
As Charleroi fans were on the road to Brussels, they stopped on the motorway. 25/30 lads (mainly youth, with a few old ones) arrived in front of us and charged, saying "BCS Brussels Hooligans" and throwing bottles. We also charged them and a good fight took place with the same number on Charleroi side (mainly youth +5/6 old faces). Charleroi took the upper hand and some BCS lads lied on the floor and the rest ran in direction of their coach who was pelted with missiles and some windows smashed up.
Two arrests on Charleroi side released Sunday mornin.
* BCS leaders said this mob was from them, from the Ath area.
Well done because it wasn't arranged....if it wasn't the main Anderlecht mob, it was nice, not like with Standard
