| Grimsby vs Scunthorpe: Police out in force for derby - 04/11/2004
Source : TEAMtalk
Police will launch a massive match-day operation in Scunthorpe ahead of the Saturday's derby with Grimsby at Glanford Park.
Local police are leaving nothing to chance after being tipped off about the possibility of violent clashes between rival fans.
"The police presence will be strong with staffing increased due to intelligence and the potential for disorder," said operations unit sergeant Brian Burns.
"This should ensure this fixture goes smoothly and police resources are able to respond to any developing tensions.
"There will be a substantial police presence both in and around the ground and in the town centre before and after the match, with uniformed officers being supported by dog handlers, the mounted section and evidence gathering teams.
"Police will also be using a specialised mobile CCTV van. A large contingency of Grimsby supporters are expected to travel for the game and there is potential for conflict," he added. _________________

| FC Haarlem - Go Ahead Eagles Deventer - 05/11/2004Source: Kowet.nl About 50 Go Ahead Eagles Hooligans travelled with vans to Haarlem. Short after their arrival the Old Bill monitored them and tried to escort them to the ground. But they escaped and drove with their vans into an nearby ward. But their attempt failed and the police locked them in and escorted them to the ground. Nearby the ground for about 25/30 Haarlem Hooligans appeared, which attacked the Eagles firm. The Go Ahead Eagles Hooligans reacted right away by jumping out of them vans and attacking the Haarlem Hooligans. It was a good but short confrontation, in which the police intervented and escorted the Eagles Hooligans right away from city borders. _________________ | |

| Security fears haunt PSG-Marseille game - 07/11/04Source : AFPOver 1,200 police officers will be on duty inside and outside the Parc des Princes stadium when arch-rivals Paris St Germain and Marseille face-off. The two sides have the biggest fan-bases in French football and recent games between the two have resulted in trouble on the terraces and outside their respective grounds. A crowd of 42,000 fans was expected for the league game with around 1,000 supporters coming up the capital from Marseille. ************************************************************* High drama in PSG victory over arch-rivals Marseille
Source : AFP On and off-pitch drama dominated Paris Saint Germain's 2-1 victory over Marseille with PSG reduced to 10 men, three spectacular goals, and the visitors having their team bus attacked near the Parc des Princes stadium. This fixture between arch rivals is rarely uneventful whether it is the performance of the players or the behaviour of the supporters that stands out. This match had both. The coach taking Marseille's football team into the stadium had its windscreen smashed as chairs, barriers and iron bars were thrown at it. Marseille club president Christophe Bouchet said the bus was nearing the stadium when about 50 supporters arrived on the scene. "The driver received cuts from glass fragments and was in shock. We had to persuade him to keep driving," Bouchet said. "It was human stupidity we found at that street corner." _________________

| SK Lierse - RSC Charleroi - 06/11/2004
Source: mail
Normally this game is not an interesting one but as last season 7 CH-youth were charged by locals, Charleroi lads decided to make to trip to Lier. On local side, rumours announced 40 Vitesse lads, but finally, they weren't there and on visitor side, approx 50 lads, including PSV ones made the trip but they arrived at 8.30pm (game played at 8pm). As strangly, many police forces were also there. At half-time, sources said some lads given infos to these police forces. So, at the end of the game, CH-lads left the stadium and took the direction of the local pub, but a police unit stopped the march on and the group was blocked 500 meters far away from the pub. Some meters later, a group of approx 50 locals started his march on, singing 'Lierse Hooligans'. Police forces pushed back visitors to their cars and finally only a few locals arrived in front of some CH-lads. A total non-event, especially because police forces. _________________

| Hooligans warned ahead of derby - 10/11/2004Source : BBC news Potential hooligans are being warned they face a life-long ban from watching their teams play if they cause trouble at this weekend's South football derby. Hampshire Police say a major policing operation is in place for Saturday's game, when Southampton play hosts to Portsmouth at St Mary's Stadium. About 400 police officers and staff will be involved, including the dog support unit and police horses. It follows the trouble at last season's derby at Fratton Park in March. Ch Supt Paul Stickler said his officers would be "doing everything they can to ensure the match is a peaceful occasion for everybody". "I hope that the small minority of people who attend football intent on causing trouble will learn their lesson from those arrested following the large scale public disorder at the match at Fratton Park. "These people call themselves football fans, and yet through their actions, they could find themselves banned from watching their team for life or even in prison. Ninety-three people were arrested, 64 of those were given banning orders and some were even jailed, following the trouble at Fratton Park on 21 March. Police do not want a repeat of the violence seen at last season's derby _________________

| Marseille - Paris SG - Cup - 10/11/2004Source : AFP Paris Saint Germain maintained their dominance over Marseille with a 3-2 win in the French League Cup achieved with a little help from the hosts' erratic defence. This was PSG's eighth straight win over Marseille and their second within three days - Vahid Halilhodzic's side having seen off Jose Anigo's men 2-1 in the league on Sunday. Violent scenes had accompanied Sunday's game at the Parc des Princes with a group of PSG supporters attacking the Marseille team's coach even before their teams' showdown. And to avoid a repeat the bus carrying PSG was ringed by security as it slipped into the Velodrome - although the day was not entirely without incident as trouble had flared earlier 100km north in Avignon when rival fans clashed resulting in the arrest of one PSG supporter. This first ever meeting between the arch rivals in this competition started at an electric pace and within ten minutes three yellow cards had been dished out - the tally was to rise to five by the interval and seven by the end of hostilities. The local paper had summed up the mood with a front page headline declaring the clash "A question of honour" - defeat at home three days after their seventh successive loss was too much to contemplate for Marseille. _________________ | |

| Blackburn Rovers - Birmingham City - 21/11/2004 Source : BBC news Police probe Yorke 'racism' claim Lancashire police have launched a criminal investigation into Birmingham striker Dwight Yorke's claim he was racially abused at Blackburn. Police heard reports from Blackburn safety officers on Monday and studied CCTV and video footage of the incident. The Football Association has launched its own inquiry into Yorke's allegations he was abused by two home fans as he warmed up on the touchline. Both clubs are also to conduct their own investigations into the claims. A Blackburn statement read: "We will give the Police - who now intend to interview all relevant parties - our full co-operation during the length of that investigation. "We would like to stress that this was an isolated incident and that we deeply regret any embarrassment caused to Dwight Yorke and Birmingham City Football Club. "We want to be quite clear that racism will not be tolerated at Ewood Park." FA head of media relations Adrian Bevington said: "We're still establishing the facts and we hope to speak to all interested parties." Blackburn have confirmed one fan had been ejected for making a gesture at Yorke. The claims come just four days after racism made an unwelcome return to the spotlight when England players were abused during a friendly in Spain. England could have walked - Fifa Birmingham boss Steve Bruce said: "They racially abused him. Dwight is bitterly upset and angry. "Apparently it is monkey taunts and that is sick. It's all right him getting a bit of stick but when it comes to what we've just seen in midweek, everybody is sickened by it." Yorke left Rovers for St Andrew's in August, bringing to an end a tempestuous two-year association with the club. The Trinidad international was roundly booed by fans as he warmed up and in particular when he replaced Darren Anderton as substitute. Blackburn chief executive John Williams said: "We want to talk to the police, we want to talk to our stewards, we want to review all the CCTV footage. "We'll be very disappointed if it shows that there's been any evidence of racism, but if there has, we'll take the strongest possible action. "This is not something that we want to tolerate at Ewood Park." Birmingham managing director Karren Brady also stressed the importance of "stamping out" racism in English football. "It was a very small minority but it is incredibly upsetting for a player and something needs to be done about it," Brady told BBC Sport. "John Williams is a very good chief executive and will leave no stone unturned in finding out what happened." However, Birmingham chairman David Sullivan played down the incident. "It's been blown out of all proportion - I heard absolutely nothing. "If it's three out of 22,000 who make racist comments then it's not very nice. "You have to pick up on it and ban those people from the ground but I just can't believe that it's that big a deal. "It was only when he was warming up. He could have run up the other end of the ground. "I would criticise any racism in the game, but I don't think there is very much. I go to football week in, week out and see virtually no racist abuse at games." _________________ | |

| Southampton - Portsmouth - 13/11/2004
Source : BBC news
Two of the five men arrested after last weekend's Southampton v Portsmouth football match have been charged.
Lee G*****, 21, of Hedge End, Southampton, is charged with being drunk when entering a sporting event, and with assaulting police officers.
William H**, 23, of Southampton, is charged with using behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to other people at St Mary's Stadium.
The men are bailed to appear before Southampton magistrates on 19 November.
"Community safety"
Of the three other arrested men, two received fixed penalty notices for offences under the Public Order Act. The fifth person - a 16-year-old boy - was reprimanded for repeatedly swearing at the police.
More than 400 officers and staff were involved in policing the game following trouble at last season's derby at Fratton Park in March.
Hampshire Police are keen to stress that overall, the behaviour of the fans was excellent.
Ch Supt Paul Stickler added: "We had almost complete compliance from licensed premises, with nearly all pubs and clubs in the city not opening until after the match was over.
"This demonstrated a great deal of understanding from licensees who sacrificed profit for the safety of the community and we very much thank them for that." _________________

| Real Madrid - Bayer Leverkusen - 23/11/2004
Source : AFP
Real Madrid could face severe sanctions from the sport's continental governing body UEFA, after Bayer Leverkusen's black players were racially abused in the two clubs' Champions League encounter.
Bayer's Brazilian defenders Roque Junior and Juan were the target of abuse from Real's Ultra Sur hooligan element during Tuesday's 1-1 draw between the clubs.
UEFA confirmed to AFP on Wednesday that they aware of the abuse at Real's Santiago Bernabeu stadium but were waiting for the referee's report before deciding on what action to take.
"We are expecting the report later today," a UEFA spokeswoman told AFP.
The options open to UEFA include a fine, forcing the Spanish giants to play their future home games behind closed doors, or at a different location, or even expulsion from the Champions League.
However, UEFA are highly unlikely to take the most extreme course of action despite Real's poor record on crowd control and its supporters' behaviour.
The abuse on Tuesday was neither as sustained, nor reached the same decibal levels, as that which was brought shame to Spanish football in their international against England at the same venue last week.
Real Madrid striker Michael Owen, who played for England on Wednesday but was on the bench for the Champions League group B match, admitted he had heard and was upset by the chanting during the game against Bayer.
"It's a bit disappointing to hear that. There's been a lot of talk about it over the last week and it's always difficult to hear that," Owen told British satellite broadcaster Sky Sports.
"We've done really well in England to stamp it out and there are pockets in Europe that can't stamp it out," added Owen.
The monkey-like grunting will also certainly have reached the embarrassed ears of Real president Florentino Perez, who was sitting beside his guest UEFA president Lennart Johannsson in the directors box during the game.
Spanish television also showed some members of the Ultra Sur giving neo-Nazi salutes to the German fans and players during and after the game.
Last week UEFA handed out heavy fines to Sparta Prague and Sevilla after racist abuse against opponents' players marred recent European fixtures involing the two clubs.
In addition, the Spanish federation sent a strongly-worded circular to all clubs ahead of last weekend's domestic fixtures warning them that they had a constitutional obligation not to tolerate racist abuse.
Curiously, Spain's two main sports papers, Marca and As, made no mention on Wednesday of the latest incident of serious racist abuse at a football ground.
However, in general, the Spanish media took two days to wake up to the fact that the rest of the world was disgusted with events in the Santiago Bernabeu last Wednedsday before condemning what had happened. _________________

Two men are to appear in court for racial public order offences aimed at Birmingham City front man Dwight Yorke who complained to police he was abused with monkey chants.
The 33-year-old former Blackburn player said he was warming up on the touchline in front of the Ewood Park home fans in the match against Blackburn on Sunday when he was jeered.
David A*******, 21, from Leyland in Lancashire, and Jason P*******, 22, from Chorley in Lancashire, were each charged with a racially aggravated public order offence and will appear at Blackburn Magistrates' Court. _________________

| France to crack down on football hooliganism, racism - 26/11/2004
Source : AFP
France's justice ministry announced it would crack down on a worrying rise in football hooliganism, some of it carried out with homophobic or racist motives.
People arrested for such crimes would be targeted by a series of measures meant to punish them "more systematically and rapidly," an official said.
Recent incidents have included anti-gay banners being unfurled during soccer matches, stones thrown at a bus transporting players from Marseille, and the assault of two black players in Corsica.
"This phenomenon is growing and is very worrying," a ministry official said.
To combat the wave of violence, a special committee handling such cases would be set up, following a report by the national football league that said hooligans were often identified but often received minor punishment or were acquitted by courts. _________________

| Match ban after football violence - ??/11/2004
Source : BBC NEWS
Four men were banned from attending football matches for three years after taking part in street violence.
Peter G*****, 21, Tom W*******, 20, and twin brothers Adam and James M*****, 20, all admitted affray at Derby Crown Court on Monday.
The four, all members of hooligan group the Derby Lunatic Fringe, were involved in a clash between Derby County and Bradford City fans on 12 April.
Each were given 200 hours community punishment and told to pay £250 costs.
They were also subjected to a four-month curfew from 2100 to 0500.
Football-related
Derby Crown Court heard how the violence, which was caught on CCTV, flared after W******* punched a man standing outside a bar on Sadler Gate.
Avik Mukherjee, prosecuting, said G***** and the M***** twins then joined in the melee before doormen finally chased the group away.
He said the men were all connected with the Derby Lunatic Fringe, and the prosecution therefore considered the trouble to be football-related.
The court heard they had been drinking throughout the day, with James M***** later claiming to have downed 12 or 13 pints of lager.
'Completely disgraceful'
G*****, of Marshall Street; Wheeldon, of Broadway, James M*****, of Ella Bank Road, and Adam M*****, of Wilmott Street, all Heanor, were told they had only narrowly avoided jail.
Passing sentence, Judge Andrew Hamilton said he believed kicks had been used during the violence, which he called "part of a footballing culture".
He also made all four the subject of a three-year banning order after branding the men's behaviour "utterly and completely disgraceful".
The Derby Lunatic Fringe is not connected to Derby County Football Club. _________________

| JAMIESON VOWS TO SHUT OUT BIGOT FANS - 29/04/2004
Source : DAILYRECORD
FOOTBALL fans who sing sectarian songs at matches could be banned from every ground in Scotland for 10 years.
Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson yesterday repeated her warning - first revealed in the Record in September - that the Executive would clamp down on hooligan behaviour.
She spoke out in the wake of an Old Firm clash when fans and players became embroiled in a row over sectarianism.
First Minister Jack McConnell publicly rebuked Rangers and Celtic and described the game as 'a step back in time'.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland yesterday, Jamieson said there was no place in football for racism or sectarianism.
And she said the Executive were set to consult on tough new laws to beat the bigots.
Football fans who sing sectarian songs would be banned from every ground in Scotland and forced to sign in at police stations when matches are under way.
Those who fail to comply could face hefty fines or jail.
Jamieson said: 'This is not just about a legislative solution, we need to change the culture.
'We hope we can send a clear message to football supporters that we want them to enjoy the game and what we don't want to see is that racism and sectarianism we sometimes see.'
Tory justice spokeswoman Annabel Goldie called on the Executive to stop talking in vague terms about 'mights and maybes' and start 'engaging with the principal clubs'.
But a spokesman said the Executive were 'happy to get tough' on offenders. _________________

Berry's order includes: * A ban on entering the city centre, and the area around Goodison Park and Anfield, four hours before and after a Liverpool match. * A ban on entering the town, city or place where Liverpool play away, for four hours before and after the match. * A ban on using trains or London Underground to get to Liverpool home or away games. Lynette Taylor, defending, said: "He has learnt his lesson. "He has just come out of prison and doesn't want to go back." _________________
