| Wembley release statement after 51 arrests made during FA Cup semi-final weekend involving Chelsea - 30/04/2024
Source : Football.London
Wembley Stadium have confirmed that 51 arrests were made across the FA Cup semi-final weekend. The two matches took place earlier this month.
Fans from Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Coventry descended on the national stadium, each set of supporters eager to see their side progress to the final. The arrests included one individual taken into custody for causing harm to a police horse.
The arrests come as Wembley prepares to host the Champions League final, the first major European showpiece since Euro 2020. An independent review commissioned by the Football Association claimed that disorder at the final between England and Italy was a 'source of national shame' and could have led to 'fatalities'.
86 people were arrested on that after thousands of fans without tickets forced their way into the stadium, though Wembley claims that they have implemented several security 'enhancements' at recent events. A statement confirming details about the arrests over the FA Cup semi-final weekend read: "The police made 28 arrests at Chelsea v Manchester City on Saturday, and a further 23 arrests at the Coventry City v Manchester United game the following day.
"Just under half of all arrests were for matters linked to pyrotechnics, tailgating and hate crimes, including two individuals arrested for tragedy chanting and homophobic abuse. More than a fifth of the total arrests were for drug-related offences. Six of the arrests were violence-related, involving three assaults on emergency workers. One fan was arrested for harming a police horse."
Metropolitan Police superintendent Gerry Parker, who will be match commander for both the FA Cup and Champions League finals, added: "Our stance has been robust throughout the season, there is no tolerance for drug use, assaults or hate crimes.
"We know the overwhelming majority of football fans at matches are law abiding and our officers will be there to deal with any supporters identified for committing offences inside and in the vicinity of the stadium.
"We are working closely with Wembley, the FA and UEFA in preparation for the FA Cup and Champions League finals to ensure the safety of everyone attending."
The FA Cup final between Manchester United and Manchester City is due to take place on Saturday, May 25. The Champions League will take place a week later at the home of English football. | |

A fight broke out opposing supporters from both teams, where police forces intervened.
-------------------------------- Source: The Scottish Sun
'DISGUSTING' Shocking moment Aberdeen & Motherwell fans clash in violent street brawl The brawl broke out just minutes away from the stadium
THIS is the shocking moment a violent brawl erupted in the middle of a residential street between football fans.
The group of thugs were seen swinging punches in front of a block of flats on Park Street in Aberdeen yesterday at around 2.10pm.
It happened minutes away from Pittodrie Staduim where Saturday's Scottish Premiership match between Aberdeen and Motherwell was being played.
Two large groups wearing their teams' colours were spotted as they gathered on street.
A fight then broke out and they suddenly started throwing punches at each other.
The yobs were mostly dressed in black and wore their hoods up, with one person appearing to wear something similar to a black balaclava covering their face.
The group pushed each other to the ground as police officers ran to break up the rammy.
However, they struggled to contain the fight as it spilled onto the busy road.
One man lay on the ground as others bagn kicking him while the choas continued.
Someone local to the area managed to capture the fight on their phone as it ramped up.

| Greece: Minors used as hooligan ‘strike force’ - 27/04/2024
Source : https://www.ekathimerini.com/
The younger Olympiakos fans who took part in the incidents in the Renti district of Athens last December that led to the death of a police officer outside a stadium during a volleyball match have been described by the police as the “strike force” – the “little ones” who followed the orders of the “big ones” in the stands.
Of the 168 people included in the police file, half are in the 16-22 age group, among them 14 minors. The investigation by the sub-directorate for combating violence in sports venues has shown that the alleged leaders of “Gate 7” supporters distributed club invitations to the “little ones” to enter the stadium for free, while they also gave them small “tips” for various errands.
During the fateful events of December, most of the minors threw stones at the police, while one allegedly was in possession of a folding knife.
The flare that fatally wounded officer Giorgos Lyngeridis was thrown by an 18-year-old according to the case file. His 16-year-old brother is also among those arrested.
Anastassia Tsoukala, emeritus professor of criminology at Paris-Saclay University, who has been studying hooliganism since 1989, says youngsters are “looking for a social identity outside of family and school, and the stands are turning into a new space of reference.”
“This is initially established with purely emotional and psychological relationships on the part of the adolescent. Within the association then, if he wants to be considered an organized fan, he will need to clear a gradual process of initiation, which is not essentially different from the process seen in gangs recruiting new members,” she said, adding that as long as the initiate does well “the missions are upgraded.” The initiation process may include throwing flares, or fighting rival fans and injuring someone in front of witnesses. If the youngster doesn’t follow instructions, he can be marginalized until the link with the organized supporters is severed. | |

| Greece: Suspected hooligan ringleader in hospital after harming himself - 27/04/2024
Source : https://www.ekathimerini.com/
One of the main suspects in the hooligan clashes that resulted in the death of a police officer in Athens in December was rushed to hospital on Saturday after what is thought to have been a suicide attempt.
According to state broadcaster ERT, the 31-year-old suspect started harming himself after hearing that he was being remanded into pretrial custody following his testimony to an investigative magistrate earlier in the day.
The 31-year-old is among 67 suspects who have been taken into custody and are being questioned over the incidents that led to the fatal injury of police officer Giorgos Lyngeridis during clashes during a volleyball match between archrivals Olympiakos and Panathinaikos in the suburb of Rentis, near Piraeus.
He is also thought to have been one of the ringleaders of the gang of dozens of hooligans involved in the clashes.
ERT reported that he was taken to the capital’s Sotiria Hospital, where doctors confirmed that his injuries were not life-threatening.
Of the first batch of 67 suspects arrested, 24 had been questioned by Saturday evening and four were remanded.
Lyngeridis, also 31, was hit in the leg with a naval flare in the December 7 clashes, succumbing to his injuries a few weeks later.
Police have already arrested an 18-year-old who is believed to have fired the flare and are now looking into the roles of other individuals involved in the incident. | |
