50 arrested after fans, police clash at Croatia Cup semi-finals

No fewer than 50 people were arrested and at least three police officers hospitalised after football fans clashed with authorities following a match in Croatia’s coastal town of Split, officials said Thursday.

The violence kicked off late Wednesday when fans of Hajduk Split rushed the field following their team’s 0-1 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the national cup semi-finals.

Members of Hajduk Split’s ultra-fan base, known as the Torcida, were trying to attack the visiting team and its supporters when they clashed with security at the stadium, a police statement said.

After being pushed back into the stands, violence later spilled out in the streets surrounding the football stadium, where “large groups of people on several occasions attacked police throwing flares, bottles, stones and other objects at them,” the statement said.

At least three officers were hospitalised, the statement added, without elaborating on the nature of their injuries.

One police vehicle was also damaged and 51 people were arrested, while firefighters were called to the scene to extinguish several blazes started in nearby dumpsters.

Along with several nations across the Balkans, the country has long struggled with hooliganism at matches, with Dinamo Zagreb’s Bad Blue Boys and Hajduk Split’s Torcida among the worst offenders.

Roma Lazio Derby under high tension: clashes between Lazio and Roma fans near the Olimpico.
Police had to intervene to separate the two groups, also using tear gas. A Roma fan and well-known Lazio ultras leader, Claudio Corbolotti, was arrested.

A derby under high tension. Although the match between Roma and Lazio was scheduled for 6 p.m., early in the morning, at breakfast time, groups of Roma and Lazio fans came into contact. To avoid the worst, the police separated the two groups, made up of around a hundred people, using tear gas.

The attempted raid on the River bar
The incident occurred at around 9:30 a.m. According to what has been reconstructed and reported by the police, a group of around 200 Lazio supporters, their faces hidden, moved from the Giusti de la Farnesina garden towards the River bar, one of the pre-match meeting points for Giallorossi fans. There, they found the response of around a hundred Roma fans who headed their way in search of contact.


Police reaction
The intervention of the police, already deployed since yesterday, stopped the clashes. In no time at all, the two bangs were separated. The arrival of the police set off a violent barrage of firecrackers and smoke bombs against the officers, who reacted by using tear gas, which then proved decisive in dispersing the troublemakers.

The final result
Roma fan Fabrizio Simula, born in 1983, was arrested by police in the Ponte Milvio district for throwing a smoke bomb. The images captured by the judicial police are currently being examined to identify other responsibilities, and further arrests cannot be ruled out. And this morning, the number of arrests rose to two. In fact, the Roma ultras were joined by Claudio Corbolotti, the well-known leader of the Lazio ultras, arrested for aggravated brawling and because he was found in possession of a stick.

Two other ultras, Roma supporters, whose injuries were reported to them in a hospital in the capital, were taken to the Digos premises and their situation is being examined. In the afternoon, inside the stadium, a Lazio supporter was arrested for resisting a public official. However, six people were reported for possession of smoke bombs, four from Roma and two from Lazio.

Further arrests cannot be ruled out in the coming hours. During the intervention, helmets, used for possible false declarations, sticks and screwdrivers were seized.



Video of the clashes
The clashes took place between people, between cars, buses and all the daily routine of a Saturday morning, even before the derby. It was inevitable that the images would end up on the cell phones of several spectators. The images are currently bouncing from chat to chat on WhatsApp and Telegram. Specialized groups are broadcasting them.

Police discover major cache of pyrotechnics as fans clash with police at Sofia derby



A huge cache of rockets and explosive devices was seized before the start of Bulgaria’s biggest derby between Levski and CSKA Sofia on Sunday.

During a routine inspection of the Vasil Levski stadium, the police found numerous flares, bombs, smoke bombs and improvised explosive devices.
