Sheffield Wednesday hooligans' brutal onslaught on Leeds fans - 01/04/2010

Source : The Star

A VICIOUS "pack" of alcohol-fuelled Sheffield football louts who launched a violent attack on a group of rival supporters on a train, sending passengers fleeing in terror, have been locked up for nearly 30 years.

The Sheffield Wednesday fans rampaged through the carriage, raining down punches and kicking and stamping on Leeds United supporters, in what a judge described as "the worst incident of mob violence on a train" he'd ever seen.

As passengers fled in horror, blood was spattered across three carriages during a 10-minute brawl.

Locking up all 12 men at Leeds Crown Court yesterday for a total of 28-and-a-half years, Judge Paul Hoffman said he couldn't imagine a worse case of violent disorder in terms of "ferocity and persistence".

He said: "It boils down to the fact you were Sheffield Wednesday supporters and you collectively had a dislike of, if not hatred for, Leeds United supporters and they were your immediate victims.

"The offence occurred in a confined space, vulnerable persons were present, many were terrified.

"Blows were being traded, people had to flee, some were trapped in their places. Many female passengers were in tears and children were traumatised. I've had a letter from a seven-year-old girl who was fearful her mother might be hurt."

He added: "All of you showed reckless indifference to the plight of your victims, whether direct or indirect. No provocation whatsoever was offered.

"One man was severely beaten and stamped to his head and body and another was stamped on. Six carriages had to be taken out of service and the train was delayed for an hour."

The judge said the men had come to court armed with glowing references - but that their families hadn't seen their other sides.

"What they don't see is how you behave when you have taken too much drink, you are out in a pack, and your activities are those of a drunken, violent mob."

Charlotte Worsley, prosecuting, said the men - now aged between 19 and 37 - had been out on a birthday drinking session in York in July last year when they boarded the 15.50 Trans Pennine Express service to Manchester Airport.

She said: "They had been drinking, their mood was boisterous, and they had been ejected from a number of licensed premises. A number of passengers on the train were able to recall that they were making reference to football affiliation and hatred of Leeds United fans."

Shaun Jones, 37, Daniel Hewitt, 20, Lee Ardron, 23, and Robert Wharam, 20, started a conversation with another group of men in the carriage who had been to York races on a stag do.

But when Jones heard they were Leeds fans, he walked down the train and told the rest of the group they were "Leeds lads".

Miss Worsley said: "They followed Jones back down the train and Dominic Mullen, 22, demanded, 'Who's starting up here?' He was clenching his fists and oozing trouble.

He began punching one of the victims and shouted, 'Do you want some?'."

The brawl was captured on CCTV. Footage showed the thugs chasing the men down the train and punching, kicking and stamping on them as passengers cowered in their seats.

Train host Kenneth Barlow, who bravely pushed his trolley into the aisle between the two groups, described passengers looking "frightened to death".

The fight ended when the train pulled into Garforth and the Owls fans pulled the emergency cord and fled. Some were arrested on a bus and others in Garforth.

Mullen, Jones and Ardron were identified by South Yorkshire Police football intelligence officers because they were "risk supporters" of Sheffield Wednesday.

The court heard all the men had either previous convictions or fixed penalty notices for drunken or violent behaviour.

Handing Shaun Jones, of Dodworth Road, Town End, Barnsley, a four-year jail term, Judge Hoffman said the thug had got personal gratification from instigating the violence.

"It was you who lit the blue touch paper," he told him. "You must have known what was likely to happen. The others then followed you in a pack down the train and you handed the responsibility to Mullen."

Mullen, of Halifax Road, Grenoside, was given four years for throwing the first punch; Sam Atkinson, 21, of Cotswold Road, Hillsborough, was given three years; Lee Ardron, of Broad Inge Crescent, Burncross, got two-and-a-half years along with Gavin Hodgson, 22, of School Road, High Green and Gavin Garton, 19 of Langsett Grove, Lower Walkley.

Stephen Hogan, 23, of Warren Gardens, Chapeltown, and Daniel Hewitt, 20, of Harris Road, Hillsborough, got two years. Robert Wharam, 20, of Chiltern Road, Boulder Hill, Jack Culyer, 20, of Ironside Crescent, High Green, Jordan Wasden, 19, of Wood Lane, Stannington, and Thomas Wilkinson, 20, of Stanley Road, Burncross, each got 18 months.

British Transport Police Detective Sergeant Granville Sellers, who led the investigation, told The Star after the case: "This was an appalling unprovoked attack on a group of young men who were simply returning from an enjoyable day at the races. No-one should have to endure such an experience.

"It was a terrifying ordeal for a large number of passengers and staff."

Fans banned after Wembley fight - 01/04/2010

Source : cambridge-news.co.uk

TWO Cambridge United supporters have been fined and banned from football matches for three years after an affray at Wembley Stadium.

The pair were involved in a fight with rival fans when the U’s faced Torquay United in the Blue Square Premier play-off final on May 17 last year, which Torquay won 2-0.

Rubin Allen, 38, of Hatherdene Close, Cherry Hinton, was given a three-year football banning order, a 12-month community order, 80 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £400 court costs.

He had pleaded guilty to affray.

Ian Hanson, 43, of Desmond Avenue, Cherry Hinton, was handed a three-year football banning order, a 100-hour community order and ordered to pay £400 court costs.

He had also pleaded guilty to affray.

A third man, 20-year-old Christopher Mitchell, of Pen Close, Cherry Hinton, was given a three-year football banning order after also pleading guilty to affray.

The banning orders mean they cannot attend any Premiership, Football League, football conference or England international match, home or away.

Sgt Mark Kathro, speaking after the men were sentenced, said: "Two groups of known football hooligans were involved in this fight at Wembley Stadium.

"Officers from the Cambridge United football intelligence unit were present and had earlier identified a group of people who we know tend to engage in football-related disorder.

"We tracked these people throughout the day and they were arrested following a fight with Torquay supporters."

He added: "The sentences these three have received goes to show how seriously the courts view this type of behaviour and the damaging effects that this type of behaviour has on football both nationally and internationally.

"This year, with the World Cup approaching, it is especially important that those who wish to spoil the enjoyment of others know this sort of behaviour is not acceptable and will be dealt with accordingly.

"The bans that these three have received will prevent them from ruining the enjoyment of others for the next three years."
The men were sentenced at Harrow Crown Court, where they had earlier entered their pleas.

Hooligans told to stay away from cup clash - 01/04/2010

Source : Portsmouth News

Dozens of football hooligans are warned to steer clear of Pompey's FA Cup clash - or face jail.

Ninety-two fans are banned from football matches - more than any other premiership club.

Now they are urged to avoid Wembley Stadium on semi-final day when Pompey face Spurs.

Portsmouth police are deploying a five-strong team who will travel to London to weed out known troublemakers.

They will also ensure Pompey fans subject to banning orders who are seen inside the stadium are arrested.

Anyone caught flouting a ban faces a fine of up to £5,000 and six months in prison.

Officers on horseback, dog handlers and the British Transport Police are also set to be called on to help the Met police the game.

In Portsmouth, extra patrols will be made in areas including Guildhall Walk where thousands of fans are expected to watch the match in pubs and bars. And a dedicated team of officers will be on-hand to deal with football-related trouble.

PC Mick Brown, Portsmouth football liaison officer, will help with policing at Wembley Stadium on April 11. He said: 'Fans with banning orders are not allowed into Wembley Stadium. If they do go in they will be arrested and put before the courts. They could face a fine and a prison sentence.

'There will be hundreds of Metropolitan Police officers at Wembley, including mounted police and dog handlers.

'We will send five officers to become part of the operation and help spot our known troublemakers. These are officers that know the likely suspects who are going to become involved in disorder.

'We will also put on extra patrols around Guildhall Walk which is the main focus for pubs showing the football, and anywhere else that large crowds are likely to gather to watch the match. We will also have a roving patrol.'

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: 'Borough officers will be out on the day managed by a very experienced command team.

Enjoy Swans V Cardiff derby day - police urge - 01/04/2010

Source : thisissouthwales.co.uk

FANS of Swansea and Cardiff have been urged by police to enjoy their derby day this weekend.

The two teams meet each other in a crucial Championship clash at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

Officers have reassured fans, residents and businesses that plans are in place to ensure the day is policed efficiently and effectively.

Divisional Commander for Cardiff, Chief Superintendent Josh Jones, said: "We recognise this is a very important fixture for both clubs as once again they find themselves seeking promotion to the Premier League.

"It's a local derby and we know how passionate fans are about this particular game.

"There will be a substantial police presence to ensure the safety of spectators and the wider community.

"We will be utilising our vast experience gained over the years in policing many major sporting events, including derby games, to ensure the day is run smoothly, and, most importantly, enjoyed by the fans.

"My message to anyone thinking about causing trouble is - don't forget about the potential that your team may be promoted to the Premier League or play each other in the play-offs.

"If you come to this event and misbehave, we will have no hesitation in banning you, which means you may miss a very important fixture in May, or miss the likes of Liverpool or Manchester United visiting South Wales next season."

The match kicks off at 5.20pm

As on a normal match day, there may be some congestion in the area of the Cardiff City Stadium before the kick off, which may build from around 4pm, according to police.

Likewise, there will be congestion at the conclusion of the game, from about 7pm onwards.

Investigation into 'heavy-handed' East Lancashire derby policing - 01/04/2010

Source : lancashiretelegraph.co.uk

POLICE have been accused of using heavy-handed tactics after video footage posted on the internet showed them hitting Burnley fans with batons.

MP Kitty Ussher and the Football Supporters' Federation are calling for a full investigation after viewing the 40-second clip taken during last weekend's derby with Blackburn Rovers.

Police have referred their controlling of the match to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), but defended the tactics used.

The clip, filmed in the David Fishwick Stand, also known as the Cricket Field Stand, at the end of Sunday's derby match, shows officers using their batons to try and disperse around 30 fans from the home end.

One officer in particular is seen to use his baton around a dozen times to hit fans who were heading for the exits.

Police said a 'small number' of Burnley fans refused to leave the stand, and objects were being thrown.

The force said the group then surged forward and knocked over officers, so police used the 'nationally approved' tactics of using their asp batons.

No injuries had been reported, police said.

Mrs Ussher, MP for Burnley, said it looked as if inappropriate levels of force had been used.

She said: "I agree with the Football Supporters' Federation and my constituents who are concerned about it and I would be happy to support there call for it to be reviewed.

"Then we can get an independent decision as to whether it was over the top".

A huge policing operation across East Lancashire saw 43 people arrested on the day, and 150 seats were ripped up by Blackburn Rovers fans.

The Football Supporters' Federation (FSF), which represents fans across the country and is the best known supporters group in the UK with more than 140,000 members, slammed the action of the police.

Amanda Jacks, who sits on the executive committee for the FSF, said: "We have got huge concerns about the way that the match was policed.

"The video footage is of particular concern. As I understand it a police officer can only use their baton in that aggressive way if they seriously fear for their safety.

"We have concerns across the board over the heavy-handed way in which the match was policed.

"There must a be a full review of the policing operation on the day.

"We have been contacted by many fans who are upset at what happened.

"We are all aware of the potential for trouble at the match and the difficult job the police had but that does not mean that their behaviour should not be scrutinised."

Yesterday the FSF were appealing for Burnley fans involved to contact them, and had sent the footage to a solicitor.

The YouTube video, which has been given an obscure title, has already been viewed 2,500 times.

Peter Pike, chairman of the Clarets Trust, said the video raised concerns but some fans weren't entirely innocent.

"We know that there were actions taken by a minority of fans from both sides that were totally unacceptable.

"There is going to be a de-briefing at which the trust will be involved and I am sure the police and Burnley Football Club are already looking at any concerns raised and the decisions taken.

"I would urge any eye witnesses who have any information to contact the police, the club or ourselves so that we can pursue it further if needed to establish what happened."

A police spokesman said they had started a 'thorough review' of the policing of the game, which Blackburn won 1-0.

He said: "As a matter of procedure we have also voluntarily referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

"The main aim of any football policing operation is to maintain public safety and to ensure that people get to and from the ground safely.

"We are pleased to say as always, the vast majority of supporters behaved impeccably.

"This incident occurred at the end of the match when a small number of Burnley fans refused to leave the Cricket Field Stand.

"Stewards and police officers tried to persuade this group to leave and during this time objects were being thrown from both sides.

"This group then surged forward and knocked over officers.

"The officers drew their asps and dispersed the crowd.

"This is a nationally-approved tactic and there have been no reports of any injuries.

"In addition to the review of the policing operation, Lancashire Constabulary, Burnley Football Club and Blackburn Rovers Football Club have launched an investigation into the behaviour of some of those supporters situated in both sides of the Cricket Field Stand."

PSG fans barred from attending French Cup semi-final - 01/04/2010

Source : Reuters

Fans of Paris St Germain will be banned from attending their side's French Cup semi-final away to amateurs Quevilly later this month for safety reasons, the French Football Federation (FFF) said on Thursday.

"The Paris St Germain club having decided to stop selling tickets (for away matches) until further notice, the PSG supporters will be barred from attending the PSG-Quevilly match," the FFF said in a statement.

PSG decided to stop selling tickets for away matches for the rest of the season following the death of a fan last month after he was beaten up by a rival group from his own club.

The FFF said measures would be taken to ensure PSG fans could not access tickets for the Cup match to be played in Caen on April 14.

Quevilly, who play in the equivalent of the fourth division and knocked out Ligue 1 sides Stade Rennes and Boulogne-sur-Mer on their way to the last four, had hoped to play in Rouen, near the small Normandy town.

The FFF and security officials decided, however, that the match would be played at Caen, 120 kms away, because the Rouen stadium did not meet the safety requirements for a French Cup semi-final.

Security will be tightened with over 800 police on duty, among them a recently-created unit specialised in fighting hooliganism, the French Interior ministry said in a statement.

2012 Games 'no place for hooligans' as 83 Scots join banned list - 01/04/2010

Source : scotsman.com

SCOTTISH hooligans will be banned from attending 2012 Olympic football matches, the Home Office has announced.
A total of 83 Scottish supporters, as well as 3,141 from England and Wales, who are subject to football banning orders will be told to stay away from games held in London, Glasgow and Cardiff.

Jim Murphy, the Scottish Secretary, said: "Football is our national game, enjoyed by millions of people across Scotland and the rest of the UK.

"Our message today is that there is simply no place for hooliganism or antisocial behaviour at matches and as a government we have been determined to make the game as safe as possible for fans across the country.

"We promised to close the loophole and ensure anyone given a football banning order would not be able to attend matches in Scotland, no matter where their offence was committed.

"We have done so today and I am glad to see the minority of so-called fans will also be banned from any Olympic football matches at Hampden."

The new laws will also ensure the orders are automatically recognised across Britain, no matter where they are imposed.

Alan Campbell, the Parliamentary under-secretary of state responsible for crime reduction at the Home Office, added: "Football hooligans have no place in the modern game – whether it is in the lower divisions, the Premier League or at London 2012.

"We are determined to deliver a safe and secure Games in keeping with the Olympic spirit.

"These powers will help police achieve that and provide yet another weapon to crack down on hooligans across Britain."

Bans are for between three and ten years, and the conditions can be tailored on a case-by-case basis. If necessary, the courts can ban recipients from using public transport on match days and from visiting other potential "hotspots", such as town centres, pubs and bars during risk periods.

Cambridge United football fans banned after Wembley brawl - 03/04/2010

Source : harrowtimes.co.uk

TWO football hooligans have been banned from watching the sport for the next three years after a brawl at Wembley Stadium.

Cambridge United fans Rubin Allen and Ian Hanson had come to Wembley on May 17 last year to watch their team face Torquay United in the Blue Square Premier play-off final.

The pair, along with a third man Christopher Mitchell, were picked out as potential trouble makers by detectives, and they were arrested after getting into a fight with rival fans.

Allen, 38, and Hanson, 43, both pleaded guilty at Harrow Crown Court to affray and were ordered to do community service and pay £400 each in court costs.

All three men were issued with a three-year banning order covering Premiership, Football League, Conference, and England games.

To make matters worse, Cambridge United lost the game 2-0.

Sergeant Mark Kathro, of Cambridgeshire Police, said: "The sentences these three have received goes to show how seriously the courts view this type of behaviour and the damaging effects that this type of behaviour has on football both nationally and internationally.”

Cardiff City - Swansea City - 03/04/2010

Source : BBC News

Eight arrests at Cardiff Swansea derby match

Eight people were arrested at the south Wales football derby between Cardiff City and Swansea City, including one for running onto the pitch.

The game was won by hosts Cardiff 2-1 with an injury time goal.

Four people were arrested for public order offences. The other arrests included assaulting a police officer, and criminal damage.

All of the arrests were made in and around the stadium. There were just over 25,000 people at the game.

South Wales Police praised the behaviour of the majority of the supporters before, during and after the game which kicked off at 1720 BST on Saturday.

Before the match, warnings had been issued that anyone caught misbehaving would be banned from future games.

Divisional Commander for Cardiff, Ch Supt Josh Jones said: "Despite the later kick-off, which might have led to increased alcohol-related disorder, I am pleased to say that the event passed relatively smoothly without major incident.

"This can be attributed to a combination of factors - the layout of the new stadium, the good behaviour of the fans, the stewarding at Cardiff City Football Club and effective policing.

"Unfortunately there was some unacceptable damage to toilets inside the stadium prior to the game which will now form part of a post-match investigation along with the eight arrests."

Seven arrested in Cardiff City derby clashes

SEVEN supporters were arrested during disturbances at the South Wales derby in the Cardiff City Stadium yesterday.

Police in riot gear held back hundreds of Cardiff and Swansea fans as seats were ripped up and thrown at rivals after the final whistle was blown.

Police dog handlers joined hundreds of officers in the stands as coins and other missiles were hurled.

Four supporters – two from Cardiff and two from Swansea – were arrested for alleged public order offences.

Another Bluebirds fan had also been arrested after storming the pitch following Michael Chopra’s equaliser in the first half.

And two Swans supporters were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after toilets in the visitors’ end were vandalised.

More arrests may follow once CCTV footage recorded by police evidence gatherers and Cardiff City’s own cameras within the ground is analysed.

But last night Inspector Tony Bishop, who was in charge of the police unit in the Ninian Stand, told Wales on Sunday the event had been a success and the stadium had passed its first major safety test.

“There was just one flashpoint at the end of the game between the Ninian Stand and the visitors’ end,” he said.

“Overall, the day went well thanks to the months of planning that was done.”

Dog handlers, mounted units and around 300 police officers on foot had been deployed in and around Cardiff City Stadium for the first derby game at the new ground.

In a briefing before the game, officers had been warned any trouble in the 25,000-strong crowd would likely be fuelled by alcohol, not helped by the 5.20pm kick-off, which some had criticised for allowing fans too much drinking time.

But fears of major clashes were not realised as measures taken to keep opposing fans apart succeeded.

The main problems occurred after the final whistle when hundreds of Swans and Bluebirds fans refused to leave the ground. But the lines of police and stewards succeeded in keeping the two sides apart.

Brazilian police use tear gas to disperse fighting fans

Police used tear gas to disperse fighting fans at a match in northeastern Brazil on Sunday with the fumes also effecting players, local newspaper a Tarde reported on their website.

Former Brazilian champions Bahia were leading 2-0 against local side Fluminense at halftime in a Baiano state championship match in Feira de Santana when rival fans clashed on the terraces.

Police immediately resorted to tear gas with the fumes reaching other parts of the ground, affecting supporters in the stands and players returning to the pitch after halftime.

Players rushed to the exit of the small stadium to escape the effects of the tear gas and recover before play could resume, some sitting in the car park wiping their eyes, the newspaper's website (www.atarde.com.br) reported while showing pictures of the scenes.

Bahia, Brazilian champions in 1988 and now in the national second division, won the state quarter-final 2-1.

Last month, police in the northern state of Rondonia resorted to pepper spray to try to get two players to leave the pitch after they were sent off and refused to accept the referee's decision, sparking a free-for-all.

Guerrero faces action after throwing bottle at fan

Hamburg have promised to take disciplinary action against Jose Paolo Guerrero after he threw a bottle into a fan's face after his side's 0-0 draw with Hannover.

The Peruvian took exception to the spectator's criticism as he was leaving the field at the end of a frustrating match for the northern Germany side and threw the bottle from which he was drinking straight into the fan's face near the entrance to the tunnel.

He will now have to face up to the consequences which, in addition to a potential ban from the German Football Association, will also result in internal disciplinary action.

"I don't care what kind of words were used (to provoke him), that is totally unacceptable,'' said the club's chairman Bernd Hoffmann on Sky television. "He will pay the relevant consequences. This does not belong in football.''

Team mate Frank Rost tried to play down the incident, although he admitted it was an error to retaliate to the fans who were venting their anger at another lacklustre display from Hamburg.

"It was an error, but he did not do it without a reason,'' he said. "He hit him perfectly - the New York Yankees would sign him up immediately.''

Cheltenham Town - Lincoln City - 03/041/2010

Source : thisisgloucestershire.co.uk

Rowdy football fans rounded up in the street

ROWDY football fans were rounded up in the street after a fight broke out in a Cheltenham bar.

Police descended on the Hogshead pub, in High Street, and moved a group of Lincoln City fans into Grosvenor Street in an attempt to defuse the violence.

The fans, who had travelled to see their team take on Cheltenham Town, were watching the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Chelsea on televisions in the bar when the fight erupted.

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said: "I didn't really see who started it, but all of sudden it was kicking off around me.

"There was quite a bit of shouting and shoving. I think somebody was shouting abuse at someone else and that's what started it.

"The police were obviously called and they came and everyone was taken round the corner.

"You don't really expect to see that in Cheltenham. It was a bit shocking."

More than 30 officers formed a defensive cordon around the fans as police vans and dogs blocked off Grosvenor street to members of the public.

The fans remained in the temporary cage for more than an hour and were prevented from going to watch the game at Whaddon Road, which Cheltenham Town won 1-0. Neighbour Sarah Smith, who came out of her house after hearing the disturbance, said: "There was a lot of shouting so I went to see what was going on.

"There were loads of police there and they had vans and dogs. There were officers filming the fans.

"They were prowling around a bit but they didn't really do anything.

"The police seemed to be handling it really well."

A police spokesman confirmed officers had attended an incident at about 2.30pm, but was unable to say whether anyone was arrested.

Ryan Groves, manager of the Hogshead, said: "There were about 20 Lincoln supporters in here. They were having a bit of an argument with some of the locals and a few glasses were thrown.

"The police were called and that was it."
