Leeds head call for justice on 10th anniversary of Istanbul killings - 05/04/2010

Source : The Guardian

• Elland Road protest marked 10 years since death of fans
• MP demands action from foreign secretary

Hundreds of football fans gathered today to mark the 10th anniversary of the killing of two Leeds United supporters in Turkey and called for "justice" in their case.

Christopher Loftus, 35, and Kevin Speight, 40, were stabbed to death in Taksim Square on the night before the club's Uefa Cup semi-final against Galatasaray on 5 April 2000.

About 300 Leeds United fans gathered outside Elland Road in Leeds today. They laid dozens of bunches of flowers, team shirts, scarves and other tributes around the statute of Billy Bremner and also at the brass plaque a few metres away which commemorates the deaths.

Chris Loftus's brother, Andy, stood alongside the Leeds North East MP, Fabian Hamilton, who told the crowd Turkey needed to do more to bring those responsible to justice. Hamilton said he had also written to the foreign secretary, David Miliband, to ask him to put pressure on the Turkish authorities.

A number of people were arrested following the deaths in 2000 and four men were found guilty of involvement in the murders by the Turkish courts but all still remain free as they pursue an apparently interminable appeal process.

"There's a very, very strong feeling, especially amongst the families, that justice has not been done and nor has it seen to be done in Istanbul," said Hamilton.

"The people arrested and convicted of these dreadful murders have never actually served any time in jail – they've been released on bail pending appeal for the last few years. No trial date has been given for that appeal hearing.

"This is absolutely appalling and I've been putting pressure on the foreign secretary and on the chief constable of West Yorkshire to take some action to pressurise the Turks to actually so something."

Asked what influence the UK can bring on Turkey, the Labour MP said: "Turkey has ambitions to join the European Union and I think this could be part of that pressure on the Turks to put their judicial system in order, to see that justice has to be seen to be done especially for the families here who are very angry that nothing's happened and that the people who are guilty of these crimes have never actually served any time in jail.

"That's appalling and that's the pressure we can put on the Turkish government. They want to join the EU. They'd better get their judicial system in order and they'd better ensure that the families here are satisfied that justice has been done."

After Hamilton addressed the crowd, those who gathered, including many children, observed a two-minute silence.

A one-minute silence was also observed before Leeds United's 2-1 victory over Yeovil at Huish Park. Both teams wore black armbands in memory of the killed supporters and Leeds fans, in an echo of what happened before the Uefa Cup match against Galatasaray took place on 6 April 2000, turned their backs on the match for the first minute in protest at the lack of justice for the Loftus and Speight families.

Bulgaria's Minyor get two-match home ban for fan violence - 07/04/2010

Source : Reuters

Bulgarian club Minyor Pernik must play their next two home matches at a neutral ground after crowd trouble disrupted their cup quarter-final match at Chernomorets Pomorie last week.

The Pernik-based club, seventh in the league, were also fined 4,000 levs ($2,743), the Bulgarian Football Union's disciplinary commission said on Wednesday.

Minyor fans clashed with police and supporters of the local team, and threw seats and other objects onto the field in the closing stages of the match.

The ugly scenes continued outside the stadium in the Black Sea town of Pomorie with two policemen slightly injured when trying to restore order.

The ban will cover Minyor's games against Slavia Sofia on Friday and CSKA Sofia on April 18.

Levski Sofia, CSKA, Lokomotiv Plovdiv and Botev Plovdiv have also served stadium bans due to crowd trouble this season.

Basket: Partizan to have home atmosphere in Paris - 07/04/2010

Source : Blic

A special aspect of the basketball Euroleague’s final event of the season – the Final Four hosted in Paris – will be the atmosphere on the terraces. The draw has paired Serbian champions Partizan with Greek side Olympiacos, while Barcelona take on CSKA Moscow in the other semi.

Owing to the same club colours or shared distant history respectively, Partizan’s brother clubs are PAOK Thessaloniki and CSKA Moscow. Partizan fans regularly display banners bearing the name of the Greek black-white counterparts and, despite being a European minnow these days, PAOK fans are set to give support to the Belgrade team’s efforts at the Final Four with their physical presence in Paris. Conversely, CSKA have dominated the European basketball for years and their attendance in the Bercy Arena will be measured in thousands.

- “The friendship and partnership of Partizan’s Grobari fans and those of CSKA Moscow goes way back and it’s eternal. They are our brothers in every respect and every time we get a chance we support each other’s teams. The same will be at the Final Four in Paris. Given our two teams cannot meet before the final, we will be supporting CSKA against Barcelona, and I expect them to support Partizan when we take on Olympiacos,” one of the Grobari fan leaders has said for Blic.

However, before they set off for Paris, a number of Partizan fans will have to solve the issue of getting hold of Final Four tickets.
- “How to get the tickets, how to ensure as many tickets as we can, who to travel and where to stay in Paris – to name just a few problems we face before we get to Paris. As things stand now, very little is known and, to make matters worse, it’s the Euroleague who have the final say in everything.”
Regardless of the obstacles, the fans are bound to give vocal support to Dusko Vujosevic’s men in Paris.

- “What I can say with certainty is that, no matter how many of us make it to the event, we will give our team full support because they have deserved it with their performances. We will be thinking about our organization on the stands later on,” said the Blic source.

The Paris police will have an additionally delicate task to handle when Partizan’s fans touch down in Paris, since their rival Belgrade fan group – Red Star’s Delije fans – have been announcing on internet forums and social networks they will be joining and supporting their own brother team, Olympiacos Piraeus, in the semi-final against Partizan in Paris.

Police launch hunt for football fans - 08/04/2010

Source : southwalesargus.co.uk

THESE nine men are wanted by the British Transport Police in connection with a fracas on a train following Newport County’s victory over Weymouth Town.

British Transport Police (BTP) issued the CCTV images yesterday showing nine men, who BTP believe are Newport County fans, wanted in connection with incidents in which police officers were sworn at and threatened on a train between Weymouth to Newport on March 6.

Four men from the Newport area aged 20, 26, 37 and 47 have already been arrested over the incidents and released on bail pending further enquires.

Police are now appealing for anybody who recognises the men in the CCTV footage to come forward and identify them.

BTP said the trouble on March 6 started when around 90 Newport county fans boarded the 5.30pm service from Weymouth to Bristol Temple Meads after County's 3-1 victory that afternoon.

During the journey the BTP said a number of fans used foul and abusive language against officers from Dorset and Avon and Somerset Police, as well as BTP officers.

Police were also threatened with violence, and the BTP said the train's CCTV cameras were tampered with.

There was also smoking on board the train, and the train’s emergency cord was pulled twice during the journey.

Detective Inspector Mick Southerton, who is leading the investigation, said: “The behaviour by some of the people on board this particular train was completely unacceptable. It was a very intimidating experience for the travelling public and for railway staff on board the train.”

He added that CCTV, photographs and witness statement would be used to identify those responsible for the disorder in the hope of putting offenders before the courts and getting them banned from future football matches.

Scotland: Police target Hampden football bus booze - 09/04/2010

Source : BBC News

Fans heading to Sunday's Scottish Cup semi final match are being warned that police will be targeting supporters' buses for alcohol.

Tayside Police said it would stop coaches travelling to and from match between Dundee United and Raith Rovers match as part of a special operation.

The force warned that similar operations in the past led to arrests.

Officers said the move was designed to drive home the message that alcohol was no longer permitted on the coaches.

Supt Sandra Richard said: "Controls on the availability of alcohol at football matches have now existed for some time in Scotland.

"This has helped to make football matches a family event, mostly free from violence, disruption and antisocial behaviour.

''However, arrests do still occur. Most of the people arrested at or in connection with football matches have consumed alcohol to some degree. Sometimes, they are much the worse for alcohol.

"Sunday's match is a showcase for Scottish football and we will undertake these searches to minimise the risk of alcohol related arrests or antisocial behaviour."

Bohemians 1905 - Bohemians Prague - 10/04/2010

Source : ESPN

Derby clash called off

The Gambrinus Liga derby at Bohemians 1905 was postponed at short notice as away side Bohemians Prague controversially refused to take the field.

The two teams were both formed in the wake of the bankruptcy of the former Bohemians Prague team in 2005. The visitors bought the right to use the existing name and colours, with Bohemians 1905 formed by fans and seen as the true successor to the defunct club.

With a capacity crowd of 7,500 in attendance and the match due to be screened on television, Bohemians Prague bosses announced 15 minutes before the scheduled kick-off time that their players would not fulfil the match as the club refuse to recognise their opponents as a member of the league.

The league federation quickly issued a statement saying that both clubs are registered to their satisfaction, but it was not enough to salvage the fixture.

The federation will decide on their response within the next week, with "harsh punishments" promised for the bottom-of-the-table visitors. Bohemians 1905 are expected to be awarded a 3-0 victory.

The game was suspended after 41 minutes of playing due to a severe brawl which opposed players, supporters and police.
Cavalery intervened to calm down players and supporters but then, troublemakers continued and several people were injured, on both sides.
It was very hard for police to protect away players under a rain of missiles.

Angry about the defeat of their team 0-2, about 200 local fans tried to stop the coach of their players.
The trainer Ralf Rangnick talked with supporters during 15 minutes to calm them down.

Fan faces charges after Darren Bent hit with bottle - 11/04/2010

Source: http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/news/north-east-news/2010/04/11/fan-faces-charges-after-darren-bent-hit-with-bottle-79310-26217295/

A FEMALE football fan is set to appear in court after being charged with launching a bottle at star striker Darren Bent.

The Sunderland and England player was smacked on the head with a drinks bottle during last Saturday’s home match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Bent was struck as he celebrated scoring Sunderland’s opening goal against his former team in front of rival fans.

He scored twice, steering the Black Cats to a 3-1 victory, but he also missed two penalties.

Specialist football liaison officers launched an investigation into the bottle incident after the match concluded and arrested a woman early last week.

Spurs fan Emma Dinnes, 20, of Wash Road, Brentwood, Essex, is now due to appear at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

She has been charged with throwing a missile.

The incident followed controversy over Bent’s move from White Hart Lane to Wearside’s Stadium of Light last year.

While waiting for his drawn-out transfer to be completed, Bent publicly blasted Tottenham by launching an online attack on chairman Daniel Levy.

On the micro-blogging website Twitter last July, one of the messages posted said: “Do I wanna go Hull City NO.

“Do I wanna go Stoke NO. Do I wanna go Sunderland YES.”

His rants led to him being hit with a fine of two-week’s wages – believed to be the equivalent of about £100,000.

He eventually went on to be signed by Sunderland for an initial £10m fee.

The striker celebrated passionately after netting the pair of goals last weekend.

He later spoke of how much the brace meant to him, especially coming against his former club.

Last December Bent was furious after his mum Shirley was racially abused by a Sunderland fan in a Wigan pub prior to a match.

Two months after he complained about the incident on Twitter, John Davison, 26, of Chester-le-Street, County Durham, was banned from attending games for three years after he admitted racially abusing Bent’s mum.

In February, he announced he was giving up Tweeting to concentrate on football.

He said: “It became a distraction I didn’t need.”

Hooligan jailed for taking part in brawl at pub - 10/04/2010

Source: http://www.nailseapeople.co.uk/news/Hooligan-jailed-taking-brawl-pub/article-1997682-detail/article.html

A FOOTBALL fan who avoided prison after a pub brawl at an away match has been jailed for eight months after getting involved in another fight.

Liam Alexander, 21, of Ennerdale Road, Southmead, escaped custody in 2007 after being arrested in Nottingham for his part in a pub brawl between City and Nottingham Forest fans in October 2006, in which bottles, chairs and plant pots were thrown.

The Bristol City fan was given a suspended two-year sentence at Nottingham Crown Court but was arrested again less than six months after it expired.

Bristol Crown Court heard a minibus full of sports fans travelled from the Three Lions pub in Bedminster to watch a New Year's Eve boxing match in Nailsea last year.

But after the fight they started one of their own at the Royal Oak pub in the town, throwing glasses at a stag party before wading in with their fists.

Sarah Regan, prosecuting, said witness Laura Cooper was left "screaming and crying" when a man lifted a chair above his head right over her.

Ms Regan said: "Laura said fighting just broke out everywhere, it seemed as though it was planned the way the fighting all started at once."

Ms Regan said innocent bystander Barry Worthington was knocked unconscious and rushed to hospital with a fractured skull and another man had to be taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary with a lacerated eyelid.

Alexander was not claimed to have been responsible for either of these injuries but the Recorder of Bristol, Judge Neil Ford QC, took a dim view of the carpenter's part in the fracas when he was sentenced yesterday. He said there was no alternative but prison.
