Greece - Volleyball: Beer can eliminates Iraklis - 14/04/2010

Source: http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_sport_1_14/04/2010_116348

Iraklis volleyball club will pay a heavy price for the beer can that one of its fans hurled at the court, hitting an Aris player, as last season's Champions League finalists have been kicked out of the Greek league playoffs, which will now resume in their absence.

A sports judge decided yesterday to punish Iraklis with elimination from the league playoffs, which means the Thessaloniki club will finish the season in the eighth spot and out of Europe next season, as well as having to play two games behind closed doors next year and to pay a 5,000-euro fine.

The judge also ruled that there can be no appeal of the decision and that Aris's Nikos Roumeliotis was not playacting when hit by the beer can, as Iraklis had claimed.

Still, Iraklis officials insisted yesterday they would appeal the decision to the supreme sports tribunal ASEAD.

Hooligans stab teen before Brighton match

Football hooligans stabbed a man in a pre-match brawl when Brighton and Hove Albion visited Southend United.

Eight Brighton men were arrested after what police suspect was a pre-planned fight between Southend and Albion supporters on the seafront of the Essex resort.

Police are pledging to have the thugs responsible banned from matches even if they do not face criminal prosecution.

On Saturday, many of the 1,300 Albion fans who travelled for the match had gathered in pubs on Southend’s seafront for a lunchtime drink before going to the match.

At about 2.30pm, Essex Police were called to the Clifftown area of the town, where about 30 people were involved in a fight.

Witnesses said the street was left littered with broken glass.

A 17-year-old from Essex suffered a gash on his arm and was given ten stitches in hospital.

Police said yesterday they believed a weapon had caused the wound, but were unable to confirm exactly what it was. A witness said it was a knife.

Nine men were arrested on suspicion of public order offences and assault.

Eight of those were from Brighton, six in their early 20s and two in their late 30s. They were released on police bail.

A 19-year-old Essex man was cautioned for a public order offence PC Darren Balkham, of Sussex Police, who led a team of “spotters” to identify troublemakers among Albion fans, said the fact the fight had taken place away from the ground, and in a residential area away from busy bars, could indicate it was a pre-arranged meeting.

Saturday’s clashes followed violence at the corresponding fixture in September, when about 30 men hurled bottles at each other in Clarendon Road, Hove.

PC Balkham said the problem of hooliganism is not believed to be on the rise, but has come into the spotlight this season because of the large number of fixtures Albion have played against neighbouring clubs.

He is planning to go back to Essex for a meeting with the officers investigating the fight.

Part of the investigation will focus on whether any of those arrested were already regarded as “risk supporters”.

If charges are not brought, police can apply for a civil order banning people from matches. The burden of proof in civil courts is lower, so a judge would have to be persuaded that on the balance of probabilities the people were involved in violence.

Action was taken last month against Joshua Moore, 21, of Chichester Drive East, Saltdean, who was banned from Albion games for five years under the Football Spectators Act. He had been warned 13 times about his behaviour in four years but never charged.

Several people were removed from the Albion end of Southend’s Roots Hall ground at the end of the match and escorted by dozens of police to the station.

The move was not believed to be directly linked to the trouble but was aimed at preventing further disturbances outside the ground.

PC Balkham said: “The club fully support us through their zero tolerance policy, and we will work collectively to ensure that violent supporters cannot attend football matches or the new community stadium at Falmer.”

Albion managing director Ken Brown said: “The majority of our 1,333 fans were extremely well behaved and enjoyed the day, but sadly a small minority of so-called supporters of both clubs had a different agenda.

"We will await reports from the police, concerning the isolated, pre-arranged meeting, but anyone found guilty of antisocial behaviour can expect to be dealt with accordingly.

"Thankfully none of the injuries were serious, but I take this opportunity to remind all fans that Brighton and Hove Albion operates a zero tolerance policy on antisocial behaviour."

Red Star get five-match crowd ban for Cup violence - 19/04/2010

Source : Reuters

Serbian league leaders Red Star Belgrade have been ordered to play five matches behind closed doors for violence in last week's Cup semi-final, the Serbian Football Association (FSS) said on Monday.

A 21-year-old Red Star fan was shot with a firearm in the abdomen during their 1-0 win over OFK Belgrade and is recovering while the assailant, identified by police as a fellow Red Star supporter, is still at large.

"The ban pertains to Red Star's home matches in the Serbian first division and the national Cup, and the mitigating circumstance is that the Red Star fan club condemned the violence," FSS said.

Red Star general secretary Andrija Kleut called the ban "too harsh" and said the club would appeal.

"The measure will also not help resolve the problems we have with hooligans," Kleut said after learning the verdict.

"We knew we would be punished but the FSS should realise that there is nothing more Red Star could have done to prevent the incident," he added.

Serbian soccer has been rife with violence in the past 10 years. Most recently, a French fan died in a Belgrade hospital last September after he was brutally beaten up by Partizan Belgrade fans ahead of a Europa League match against Toulouse.

In September 2008, a Red Star fan was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he was convicted of attempted murder for attacking a plainclothes policeman with a burning flare during a league match in December 2007.

Red Star are two points ahead of Partizan in their two-team title race and Belgrade's bitter foes meet in a potentially explosive derby, which has a history of crowd trouble, on May 8.

Red Star play northern rivals Vojvodina Novi Sad in next month's Cup final.

Roma's Totti Avoids Ban For Goading Lazio Fans - 20/04/2010

Source : Reuters

AS Roma striker Francesco Totti has avoided a ban in the Serie A title run-in after being let off with a fine for goading fans of relegation-threatened Lazio.

Totti, whose side lead Serie A by one point with four games left, made a thumbs-down gesture to Lazio supporters after Roma's 2-1 comeback win in a heated city derby on Sunday.

The Italian league said in a statement on Tuesday that captain Totti had been fined 20,000 euros (17,538 pounds) for the gesture, which provoked an angry response from the already combustible Lazio contingent on and off the field.

The match has always been one of football's most violent derbies but critics have said the striker's actions further inflamed the situation, with several people arrested and one man seriously hurt in fighting after the game.

The clubs were both fined 40,000 euros for trouble in the stands where a steward was hit by a coin and police officers were slightly injured in scuffles.

Totti was so pumped up for the match that coach Claudio Ranieri had to substitute him at halftime, saying the one-club man was too excited to contribute effectively.

Police ‘in the clear’ after trouble at East Lancs derby - 20/04/2010

Source : Lancashire Telegraph

LANCASHIRE Police have been cleared by an independent watchdog over their handling of last month’s football derby at Turf Moor.

A video showing officers striking some Burnley supporters with batons in the David Fishwick Stand appeared on YouTube shortly after the defeat by Blackburn.

The controversial footage

It prompted claims of ‘heavy-handed’ policing, and bosses referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

But the IPCC, after reviewing both CCTV and YouTube footage, has decided an investigation is not warranted.

The Football Supporters' Federation has expressed 'surprise and disappointment' at the decision.

Lancashire Police said an internal review would now take place into the way the match was policed.

The 40-second video shows police trying to disperse home fans from the stand shortly after the final whistle in the game, which Blackburn won 1-0.

One officer in particular is seen to use his baton around a dozen times to hit fans who were heading for the exits.

Police said a 'small number' of Burnley fans had refused to leave the stand, and threw objects.

Officers said the group then surged forward and knocked over officers, so police used the 'nationally approved' tactics of using their asp batons.

No injuries were reported, police said.

The Football Supporters' Federation, which represents fans across the country and is the best known supporters group in the UK with more than 140,000 members, had slammed the actions of the police.

Amanda Jacks, of the FSF, said they had been contacted by a fan who was repeatedly struck by an officers baton and had suffered bruising to his head, ribs and legs.

She said: “We find it a great pity that the IPCC did not see anything wrong.

“We feel their stance will prove counter-productive to law-abiding football supporters who want to support police in their work, but will be left quite sceptical by this decision.

“We wonder if the IPCC spoke to the supporter involved.

“Police have a difficult job to do at football matches but we can’t find any reasonable explanation for police to lash out like this.

“There must be better methods of training officers to deal with crowd situations, especially when young children are present.”

Kitty Ussher, the outgoing MP for Burnley, had called for the full investigation.

She said: “I’m slightly surprised by the decision, but the IPCC are pretty independent and well-respected.

"I appreciate it is difficult for supporters but I also respect the IPCC’s expertise.

“If any of my former constituents wanted to speak to me to find out what more can be done or find out more from the IPCC then I would be happy to help.”

Peter Pike, chairman of the Clarets Supporters’ Trust, said he backed the police stance.

“I am sure it has been looked at in detail by the IPCC, who are not concerned,” he said.

“The short YouTube video is just a piece of a much wider picture.

“We have been contacted by two fans, who both supported the police and said they took that action as a last resort.”

A huge policing operation across East Lancashire on derby day saw 43 people arrested, and 150 seats were ripped up by Blackburn Rovers fans.

A spokesman for the IPCC said: “Our assessor has looked at the CCTV footage and the YouTube footage and decided it doesn’t need to be investigated.”

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said an internal investigation was taking place.

Coatia : Zadar - Inter Zaprešic - 17/04/2010

Source : The Sun

A DOPEY football player got SLAPPED — after celebrating his goal with the WRONG fans.

Excited Tomislav Bosec let his emotions go in true style, not realising his team's supporters were at the OTHER end of the pitch.

In a video that has become a YouTube hit, the striker leaps over advertising hoardings to mark his goal for Croatian league side Inter Zapresic.

One helpful fan of rival team NK Zadar is then seen providing a firm reminder not to make the same mistake again.

An onlooker said: "It's unfortunate for Bosec, he will be become better known for this stupid celebration than the goal itself."

On the beat: Cops double life as hooligan - 20/04/2010

Source : German Herald

A policeman has told of his extraordinary double life as a violent soccer thug in a no-holds-barred book about his eight years as one of football's most feared thugs.

Vicious Stefan Schubert was booted out of Germany's police force when his membership of the country's ultra-violent Blue Army Bielefeld gang was discovered.

Now he's hoping to cash in on his thuggery with a tell all book, 'Violence is the Answer.'

Describing one confrontation he wrote: "They already started counting the guy out when I raised my foot over his head and kicked him with full force.

"His eyes rolled back and he lost consciousness while he was still on his way down, crashing on some stairs."

Schubert explained: "The differences between what I did in my job and what I did in my spare time were surprisingly small."

Police vow to catch Huddersfield football yobs after Millwall clashes - 19/04/2010

Source : Huddersfield Daily Examiner

POLICE today vowed: “We will catch the football yobs”.

A special team has been set up to track down those involved in terrifying brawls in Waterloo before Friday’s Town v Millwall game.

They are trawling through CCTV footage to try and identify the trouble-makers who fought running battles along Wakefield Road with pool cues, bottles and bricks.

There are fears that much of the violence was pre-planned.

And there are fears that the two clubs could meet again next month in the League I play-offs.

Officers believe large numbers of hooligans gathered at Waterloo prior to the crucial League I game to “ambush” Millwall supporters heading into Huddersfield from the M1 motorway.

They struck when a coach carrying 50 Millwall supporters pulled up at traffic lights at the Wakefield Road/Penistone Road junction.

Three more minibuses filled with Millwall fans also stopped at the scene and the supporters fought running battles with Huddersfield fans.

A number of fans were injured and onlookers told of terrifying scenes as people were hit with bricks and with smashed bottles.

Huge numbers of police were called to the scene and officers filmed many of those involved with CCTV cameras.

Those images are now being studied by specialist football intelligence officers who work with both soccer clubs.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At 6.59pm on Friday night, police responded to reports of disorder at Wakefield road, Waterloo.

“No serious injuries were reported and an investigation has started.

“As part of the investigation, CCTV footage of the disorder and the offenders will be studied.

“A dedicated Investigation team has been set up with specially-trained officers working to identify offenders who are believed to be supporters of both Huddersfield Town and Millwall football clubs.

“The Millwall supporters who are believed to be involved did not attend the game and were escorted away from the ground.

“Police will not tolerate any violence or disorder of this type and offenders will deal with it severely.

“Anyone who witnessed the disorder and has any information about those involved should contact Det Sgt Bellhouse at Kirklees CID on 0845 60 60 606 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

There were a few minor incidents of further disorder near the Galpharm Stadium after the game, which Town won 1-0, but no arrests.

Pompey and Spurs fans arrested after semi final victory

Police arrested 14 people following fighting between Pompey and Spurs supporters at London's Kings Cross tube station.
Officers from the British Transport Police (BTP) arrested 14 men in connection with the incident, which was reported at 8.02pm.

It happened after Pompey beat Spurs 2-0 in the FA Cup semi final at Wembley on Sunday April 11.

BTP Detective Sergeant Doug Fairbairn, the investigating officer, said: 'We believe the group started getting rowdy and began fighting in the front carriage of a Hammersmith and City or Circle line train heading east from the direction of Baker Street.

'The disorder then spilled out on to the platform as the train reached King's Cross.'

Two men suffered minor facial injuries and there were no reports of any weapons being used.

'We are looking to build a complete picture of what happened that evening and I am appealing for any witnesses who were on the train or the platform to come forward,' added DS Fairbairn.

'Football-related disorder will not be tolerated on the London Underground and we will push for the strongest penalties for those who engage in it.'

Trial starts for 14 Serbians in fatal fan attack - 21/04/2010

Source : AP

The trial has started for 14 hooligans charged with fatally beating a French soccer fan before a Europa League match last September.

Proceedings opened Wednesday at Belgrade's Higher Court.

The group are charged with first-degree murder after 28-year-old Brice Taton was attacked in a downtown cafe in the Serbian capital before Partizan Belgrade's match against Toulouse on Sept. 17. Taton died several days later in a hospital.

Officials say two suspects remain at large and will be tried in absentia. A senior police official says they are probably hiding in neighboring countries.

Serbia has recently seen a surge in fan violence. A Red Star Belgrade fan was seriously wounded last week in a shooting during a local cup match.

Bosnia-Hercegovina : FK Sarajevo - Siroki Brijeg - 21/04/2010

Source : Straits Times

AT LEAST 15 people, including eight police officers, were injured on Wednesday in violence that broke out after a Bosnian league football match, police said.

The violence followed the 1-1 draw between Sarajevo and Siroki Brijeg, a police official told AFP, adding that the toll of injured was not definitive.

Dissatisfied with their team's result, Sarajevo supporters smashed seats in the stands, while others ran onto the pitch and overturned benches for players and coaches, national television BHRT reported.

Some of the supporters attacked guards, preventing them from escorting the players to their locker room, the same source said. Outside the stadium a group of Sarajevo fans clashed with the police and rival supporters.

One person was killed in violent clashes between fans of the sides in October, when the match was played in the southern town of Siroki Brijeg.

The Sarajevo supporters are mostly Muslims, while those of Siroki Brijeg are predominantly Croats. Ethnic tensions between Bosnian Muslims, Croats and Serbs have remained strained 15 years after the 1992-1995 war that left some 100,000 dead.

Serbia - Court throws out hooligan threats case - 22/04/2010

Source: Tanjug

The First Municipal Court in Belgrade has dismissed the case against six Partizan FC fans

The groups was charged with endangering the safety of B92 TV reporter Brankica Stanković.

The court also released the group from custody. The six were held since they were arrested after a football match between Partizan and Shakhtar on December 16, 2009.

During the matches, they shouted insults aimed at Stanković, but also warned her that she would “end up like Ćuruvija”, in reference to the Serbian journalist and publisher who was shot dead in Belgrade in 1999.

The case was dismissed today because it had been filed by an unauthorized prosecutor, the court said, and because there were “ “no elements of endangering of safety and violent behavior, but there were possibly elements of slander”.

Public Prosecution Spokesman Tomo Zorić announced that the prosecution will appeal the court's decision.

He said the prosecutor's office was surprised with the outcome today, because the indictment was checked by the court, and the Criminal Extra-Procedural Chamber, when all objections of the defense counsels were dismissed before the trial.

Zorić stressed that the extreme importance of the indictment, saying it was “effectively historic”, since it was the first case based on the last year's changes made to the Criminal Procedure Code, which treated journalists as official persons.

“It's a serious criminal act of endangering of safety (of a journalist) for which the envisaged punishment is one to eight years in prison,“ Zorić explained.

Judge Jelena Milinović, who dismissed the case today, advised Stanković to file a private lawsuit against the fans for slander, which the B92 reporter said she would not do.

Stanković said in her reaction that such court's decision in effect justified the threats, and that competent institutions had perhaps unintentionally become accomplices and inciters of calls to lynch.

The B92 reporter has been under police protection since December 2009.

The threats started during the Insajder (Insider) TV series, which revealed that more than 100 criminal charges had been filed against fans of Partizan, Red Star and Rad football clubs, and that charges against them included murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, extortion and robbery.

The investigative program, however, also revealed that these criminal charges have never been processed because they would, as a rule, grind to a halt once they reached courts.
