South Africa: Police use pepper spray as people buy World Cup tickets - 16/04/2010
Source : Radio New Zealand
South African police had to use pepper spray to stop scuffles and a 64-year-old man died in a queue as thousands of fans rushed to buy half a million Football World Cup tickets being sold over the counter for the first time.
Frustration built as people waited for a chance to get tickets, including some for the final, while computer crashes led to anger and frustration among fans.
Police say the man died after an apparent seizure.
Ticket sales in the country had been below expectations until recently with FIFA criticised for selling them in a complex system over the internet which was foreign to many poor black football fans used to getting tickets for cash on match days.

Violence raises its ugly face - 13/04/2010
Source : University Observer Online
Ten years on from the death of two Leeds United fans in Instanbul, Richard Chambers investigates the resurgence in hooliganism in recent times
April 5th marked the tenth anniversary of one of the most harrowing moments in recent football history. Leeds United fans Christopher Loftus (35) and Kevin Speight (40) were fatally stabbed in Istanbul on the eve of the club’s UEFA Cup tie against Galatasaray. The deaths caused outrage across the continent with many seeing it as an anomalous incident, a product of a bygone period when fan violence was commonplace. The ‘justice’ campaigns were credited with catalysing a movement to prevent any further deaths from football-related violence. It is unfortunate to recognise that despite these best efforts, the problem has resurged in Europe and continues to thrive in Latin America.
The extent of the problem in Argentina has been well documented. The fanatical supporter groups, the Barra Brava, dominate the sport, with many leading members linked to politicians. Riots are commonplace and firearms have superseded improvised weapons. This year has been particularly grievous for Argentinean football: five people, including a policeman, have died from their wounds. The government has long been criticised for failing to address the situation; a fresh scandal has emerged as it was announced that five hundred leaders of the Barra Brava would receive free trips to the World Cup in South Africa. The initiative was proposed by HUA, an umbrella group for supporters clubs – an organisation legitimised by the government.
Even clubs and nations without a notable history of hooliganism have experienced this upsurge. Berlin’s Olympiastadion, the stage for great moments of sporting endeavor from Jesse Owens to Usain Bolt, was reduced to the setting for a moment of significantly less glory just a few months ago. More than one hundred Hertha Berlin fans took to the field following their defeat to relegation rivals Nürnberg, using metal bars to damage hoardings and the dugouts. This instance has not been an isolated one this season. Historically, any disturbances in German football have been limited to the infiltration of supporters by far-right extremists; now, however, German football has been exposed to the subculture of the ‘casuals’.
Casualism, a brand of hooliganism that originated in Britain in the 1980s, takes its name from the attire of its participants. These firms forsake the replica shirts and garb of the traditional hooligan in favour of brands such as Stone Island and Lacoste, allowing for easier penetration of opposing fans and nonhooligans (or ‘scarfers’). For this reason, they are potentially the most threatening. The subculture has experienced a massive revival over the past decade, with films Green Street and The Football Factory inadvertently serving to glorify the phenomenon. The model has spread across the continent, including France where further loss of life can be attributed to fan violence.
A member of a casual firm loyal to Paris Saint Germain was the victim of a feud between two sections of the Parc des Princes Stadium, an arena already infamous for crowd trouble. The man, named only as ‘Yann L’ by authorities and a member of the Boulogne End gang, died as a result of head injuries sustained in a manifestation of this most superficial of tribal disputes. The firms boast of their ferocious pride in their clubs, and yet engage in the wanton murders of fellow fans. It is easy to see why observers claim that the hooligans are motivated solely by violence.
In a statement regarding the February 28th riot, the French Sports Minister Rama Yade said “the worst had happened,” adding: “Passions transformed into sordid, senseless, murderous rage. Love of the jersey has become hate of the other, hate of sport and hate of life.” PSG’s response was swift, with the banning of all fans from away fixtures for the remainder of the season. The Parisian club’s method, like all prevalent methods to address violence, have been labelled purely reactionary and do nothing to pacify potential troublemakers.
Realistically speaking, there is little governments or UEFA can do to actively discourage those with criminal intent. Michel Platini recently met with the EU Commissioner responsible for sport, Androulla Vassiliou, where violence was among the most prominent items for discussion. Preventing hooligans from access to the vicinity of stadiums will only do so much to quell the escalating violence. Any European attempts to dislodge such activity from the sport must be mirrored internationally, less the World Cup be tarnished by an incident similar to that which befell Loftus and Speight. Should these fears be realised it would, as Rama Yade described the violence, be “a victory for barbarism and a defeat for sport, fraternity and civilisation.” universityobserver.ie

Juventus Fans Attack Team Bus On Arrival In Milan - 16/04/2010
Source : Goal.com
Approximately 80 Bianconeri fans showed their disgust towards the team for their poor performances this season.
A group of approximately 80 Juventus supporters bombarded the Bianconeri team bus upon the side's arrival in Milan for the Derby d'Italia clash with Inter on Friday night.
The supporters decided to throw eggs and rocks at the bus, as well as smoke bombs and firecrackers. The bus was situated in Pieve Emanuele, outside the hotel where the Bianconeri players are staying.
The group also chanted vociferously for 10 minutes - demanding better performances from their side - once they had finished throwing objects, according to Goal.com Italia.
Police were called in to calm the situation, and will now surround the entire complex for the remainder of the Turin outfit's stay.

Quevilly - PSG - French cup played in Caen - 14/04/2010
Source : Reuters
Quevilly, a side from a Rouen suburb, hosted PSG in Caen, 120 kilometres away from their home, because their own stadium did not meet safety standards.
PSG fans were banned from attending after the Ligue 1 side, who have been struggling for years to keep their most violent supporters under control, decided to stop selling tickets for away games until the end of the season.
Some 800 police were on duty. No incidents were reported around or during the game, attended by a 21,000 partisan crowd, roughly the Quevilly population, clad in yellow and black, the club's colours.

Huddersfield Town - Millwall FC - 15/04/2010

Huddersfield Town and Millwall fans in large scale battle before match
WARRING football fans turned a Huddersfield road into a battlezone.
In a shocking outburst of violence at 7pm last night, up to 100 Town and Millwall fans used bricks, sticks and bottles in front of shocked onlookers.
One man has been admitted to hospital amid reports that walking wounded fled the scene as police arrived.
At the time of going to press no arrests had yet been made.
Onlooker Paul Stevens said: “It all kicked off at the Waterloo pub.
“There was a large group of Town fans outside and a coach carrying Milwall supporters pulled up at the traffic lights.
“The Town fans began throwing bottles and stones.
“Millwall fans then rushed off the coach and started fighting with them in the middle of the road.
“Then, three more minibuses of their fans pulled up and they all piled in.
“It was terrifying. People were throwing bottles and stones and bricks, anything they could get.
“There must have been around 100 people involved. At the start there were only three or four police and they did a brilliant job. We rang it in and told them the police really needed help.
“In two or three minutes there were about 40 more police and a lot of the fans ran off in the Sunnymead direction.”
Workers at the Waterloo pub were last night cleaning the pavement of glass outside, but said there was not significant damage inside.
Police were tidying the scene of missiles, and debris was being cleared from the road.
One local shopkeeper said: “The first I saw was a group of people running past my window.
“Then we heard someone shout ‘There’s a fight’ and we went outside – it was a massive brawl at the traffic lights.
“One guy was knocked out cold on the floor. Another was bleeding from his face.”
One drinker aged 18 who was in the pub as the fight started said: “It was scary, I could see one of the Millwall fans had a smashed bottle and was screaming ‘Come on then’ to the Town fans.
“The police who were there at the start did their best to stop it but there were just too many of them to deal with.
“The Town fans started throwing bottles, but pretty soon both sets of fans were throwing anything they could get their hands on. They were going through bins just to find weapons.”
A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We were called to a disturbance at a pub on Waterloo Road shortly before 7pm.
“One man was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with minor injuries as a result of the incident.
“Inquiries are ongoing and there have been no arrests as yet.”

Switzerland : Hooligans to face tougher measures - 16/04/2010
Source : swissinfo.ch
The authorities have presented new measures aimed at clamping down further on hooliganism at football matches.
The accord between cantonal governments or cities and the football association specifies who is responsible for security in and around stadiums, stipulates the measures that have to be taken and in particular apportions the costs.
The plan includes restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages, the installation of surveillance cameras, the deployment of police observers and extending a hooligan database.
Clubs will have to draw up a concept to stop the use of fireworks and flares among spectators and prevent acts of violence and racism.
Karin Keller-Sutter of the St Gallen cantonal government as well as Peter Gilliéron of the Swiss Football Association stressed the importance of a violence-free environment at football matches.
“We work together to improve security, reduce violence and costs,” Keller-Sutter told a news conference on Friday.
The accord, which builds on an agreement reached last November, is to serve as a model for accords between the political authorities and individual clubs.

Police in riot gear formed a barrier to prevent the supporters from coming into contact with one another Sunday.
The start of the Serie A match was brought forward by two hours due to security concerns.
When the clubs met in December, the game was suspended for nearly 10 minutes during the first half due to firecrackers exploding in the stands.
In 2004, the derby was stopped three minutes into the second half when a false rumor spread through the stadium that police had killed a boy outside the stadium, sparking riots.

Extra police in Sheffield for football derby
More than 300 police officers were on duty in Sheffield as the city's two football teams played their 125th derby match on Sunday.

South Yorkshire Police warned "the small minority of troublesome fans" to stay away.
The force said there were no reports of major incidents by the end of the game.
Eighty nine people in Sheffield have been served orders banning them from attending football matches after they were involved in disorder at the clubs' venues.
Before the match a police spokesman said: "A safe, enjoyable family atmosphere is something the police and partners are determined to maintain at local football matches.
"This is at the heart of Sheffield's success in forming part of the England bid to host the 2018 World Cup and all eyes will be on the city this weekend."

Sheffield Wednesday and United fans in city centre 'clash' ban
ALMOST 100 rival football fans were banned from Sheffield city centre after the Steel City Derby on Sunday to prevent violent clashes. Police working in the city for the Sheffield United and Wednesday derby discovered rival fans were preparing to fight after the game, and tracked them down to the Leopold Square area where they were kept apart.
Scores of officers were involved in the operation and issued 97 fans with dispersal orders banning them from the city centre and other specified locations. They faced arrest if they breached the orders.
Chief Superintendent Simon Torr, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "There was a calming period after the game when pubs in the Hillsborough area closed but then at around 6.30pm there were around 60 Wednesday fans and 130 United fans found in the city centre.
"They were in different pubs at first but then there was a move with an aim of them coming together around Leopold Square."
Police mounted one of the biggest operations of the year for the game, with 330 officers on duty before, during and after the match - which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Chief Supt Torr added: "There was no violence, no arrests and no damage. It was a successful operation - there were eight arrests all day out of 35,000 fans.
"I am disappointed people were planning violence but our intervention proved a success."
Three of the eight people arrested were hooligans caught breaching their football banning orders - two in Hillsborough stadium and one close to the ground.
Two arrests were for drunk and disorderly behaviour, one was for assault, one was for possession of an offensive weapon and one was for breaching a dispersal order.
Police officers are scanning CCTV footage from inside Hillsborough football stadium looking for fans in the crowd responsible for throwing flares.
