UK : Three years’ jail for pub attack - 01/04/2009

Source : Bromsgrove Advertiser

A beer glass was smashed in the face of a Bromsgrove man after a clash between rival football fans.

West Bromwich Albion supporter James Alcock and Aston Villa fan Michael Colley were both drinking in the Rousler pub in the victim’s home town at the end of a match.

But light-hearted banter turned to violence when Alcock suddenly snapped and lunged forwards, said Joanne Barker, prosecuting.

The glass shattered, causing a cheek wound which needed stitches and a black eye, Worcester Crown Court heard.

Alcock, aged 27, of Colley Lane, Halesowen, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and was jailed for three years.

Recorder Graham Cliff said football rivalry, alcohol and previous bullying suffered by the defendant had prompted the crime.

The incident happened on August 23 last year after Alcock made a comment to Mr Colley that “my dad would kill you” for supporting Villa.

The victim, who is still receiving treatment at Redditch hospital, tried to laugh off the remark, but was then attacked.

Alcock was quickly arrested. He told police it was “a pre-emptive strike” but did not realise he was holding a glass.

Simon Rippon, defending, said he had been verbally bullied throughout his life because he was only five feet tall.

He was not a mindless hooligan, but a likeable young man who needed to tackle an anger problem, Mr Rippon told the court.

UK : Yob who swore at fans after match aiming to join Army, court hears Wednesday - 01/04/2009

Source : Express & Echo

A YOB has admitted shouting abuse and swearing at Bradford City fans after a post-match clash.

Scott Elson, 19, of Cleveland Street, St Thomas, Exeter, pleaded guilty to a public order offence involving shouting abuse at Bradford fans.

Exeter magistrates heard he was seen puffing his chest out and pointing at rival fans while calling them derogatory names in front of passing shoppers.

Prosecutor Alison Jordan told the court that police were called to a mass brawl in Sidwell Street at 5.15pm on Saturday, March 14.

On arrival they saw Elson standing in front of another man, swearing at him and puffing his chest out.

Miss Jordan said Elson continued to swear at the same man after being warned by police officers to stop because of families standing nearby.

She told the court he continued to swear and point at a group of men. He was then arrested.

She said Elson told police as he was taken away: "I ain't even been to the game."

Elson also admitted another offence at Flowerpots skate park, near Exe Bridges, three days later.

Police were called there when a gang of youths were seen entering the park with a baseball bat.

Miss Jordan said the group dispersed when the police arrived but they heard Elson talking on his mobile phone.

He said to the person on the other end: "I am going to slash you and stick it in your fat gut."

Elson ran away from the police towards Exwick playing fields but was caught and arrested.

Elson, who lives with his parents, told magistrates he was under the influence of alcohol for the football offence.

He also told the court he had gone to the skatepark for an arranged fight with people from Burnthouse Lane, in Wonford, and was on the phone to one of them.

The court heard he has a previous conviction for battery as a youth.

When asked if he would commit further offences he told magistrates: "It's not going to happen. I want to get into the Army."

Elson, a sales assistant at Martin's newsagents in St Thomas precinct, said he had applied for the Army and was waiting for selection in three weeks' time.

Magistrates told Elson: "We hope that you get into the Army and hope that you will learn a lot there." They fined him £175.

UK: Fireman facing extradition over football riot - 03/04/2009

Source : Rye and Battle Today

A Kent firefighter was facing possible extradition to Portugal, five years after being accused of rioting during an international football tournament.
Garry Mann, 51, of Faversham, was arrested on March 19 by police officers acting on a European arrest warrant issued by Portugal, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

It is understood the warrant alleged one incident of rioting in 2004 and he will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court for the full extradition hearing.

Mann was among a group of England fans accused of rioting after trouble flared in Albufeira on the Algarve during the European Football Championships in June 2004.

He was sentenced to two years in prison by a Portuguese judge before he was deported back to the UK.

Home Office officials said at the time that Mann would not serve the prison sentence in the UK as there was no legislative framework to support it.

The firefighter has always denied the charge, claiming he was the victim of a "stitch-up".

Mann, who has worked for Kent Fire and Rescue Service for 30 years, is a firefighter at Canterbury Fire Station.

Last week, a Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said they would be "keeping a very close eye on this situation".

UK: Full stands at U’s stadium for Leeds match - 03/04/2009

Source : Maldon and Burnham Standard

THE visit of a fallen giant means stands at Colchester’s new community stadium will be sold out for the first time tomorrow.

The League One clash between Colchester United and Leeds United has been announced as the first capacity crowd for the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Gates have been boosted by a decision to grant Leeds, who regularly attract more than 20,000 supporters to home games at Elland Road, an extra 1,300 seats in the East Stand.

The 3,200 tickets allocated sold out ten days ago.

Fears have been raised that more fans of the Yorkshire club have bought tickets intended for home fans.

Chief Insp Adrian Coombs, Colchester District Commander, said he would ensure the match remained trouble free.

“On behalf of Essex Police, I welcome Leeds supporters to our town and to the Weston Homes Community Stadium,” he said.

“Our matches here are a family affair and we want families from both sides to enjoy the football in a safe and trouble free environment.

“We will not tolerate any trouble before, after, or during the match and will not hesitate in dealing with any football hooligans under the powers given to us.

“We anticipate up to 10,000 supporters and hope that all those who attend enjoy an action-packed, high-scoring game.”

About 200 seats in the East Stand will be kept empty in order to separate rival fans.

The only previous sell-out was in November last year, when England’s under-19 side took on their German counterparts.

Youngsters were offered cheap tickets but many seats remained empty and the official attendance was 9,692.

Echoes of Colchester United’s FA Cup victory over Leeds United in 1971 will be present in the minds of many fans.

And they will get the chance to reminisce at half-time when players from both sides, including Leeds legend Peter Lorimer and Ray Crawford, who scored twice for the U’s in the 3 - 2 victory, will take to the pitch.

UK: Baby-faced PNE fan banned - 03/04/2009

Source : Lancashire Evening Post

A Preston North End fan has been banned from every match in England and Wales for three years for his role in football violence.
Baby-faced Michael Kinsella, 20, of Geoffrey Street, Ribbleton, is linked with an organised gang called Preston Foot Patrol which has been involved in "three separate incidents" of violence and disorder, Lancashire Police say.

Preston Foot Patrol members clashed with rival fans at matches against Coventry City, Hull City and West Bromwich Albion in 2007.

When the Evening Post called at Kinsella's family home, his mother declined to comment on the ban but said her son had not committed any offences.

Under the order Kinsella was banned from:

Any regulated game in England and Wales; Preston city centre and any town or city on match days where North End are playing.

From being within five miles of the city centre of London, Manchester or Birmingham on England matchdays if the national team is playing there, and he must comply with police during tournaments outside the UK.

From travelling by train to any town or city where England or North End are playing without permission from British Transport Police.

He must also stay away from a specified area around Deepdale for three hours before and four hours after home matches, and must also surrender his passport.

The order – which Kinsella did not oppose despite having no criminal convictions – was made by Preston Magistrates' Court.

Four members of the so-called Preston Foot Patrol – Stewart Baker of Fulwood, Lewis Dickinson, Lewis Bell and Matthew Cartwright, all of Ribbleton – received five-year bans in October 2008.

Cartwright, Dickinson and Baker are friends with Kinsella on the social networking site Facebook.

Banning orders are civil orders introduced after Euro 2000 and police can apply for orders against convicted hooligans or those suspected of being involved in football violence.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: "This is based on intelligence surrounding him. This three-year ban is welcomed."

Kinsella now faces a jail sentence if the order is breached. Copies of the order have been distributed to Lancashire Police, Preston North End and the FA.

90 hooligans arrested in Poland

Police arrested 90 hooligans suspected of being part in a mass brawl in wood, 70 kilometers far away from Kracow. 500 hooligans could be concerned. It seems it was fans from Gdańsk (300) against a coalition from Widzew Lodz and Ruch Chorzów, but some people are also from towns like Ruda Slaska, Siemianowice Śląskich, and Bytom (200 on the whole). Probably a good part of the hooligans were on board of a train, when alarm was drawn in order to make stop the train and to take part in the festivities.
The police forces (500) installed filtering stoppings on the neighbouring roads to intercept the vehicles of the hooligans which had escaped. According to the Polish law, challenged three years of prison for these facts incur. The police force does not exclude other arrests to come. 150 police officers are always mobilized on the spot to find the protagonists. There were five hooligans wounded.

Violence still engrained in Argentine game - 01/04/2009

Source: Reuters

Racing Club goalkeeper Pablo Migliore acted as if nothing unusual had happened during a recent morning training session.

"We understand that the supporters are angry," he said. "We ask them to support us because we need to be together to get out of this situation.

"We've only taken three points from the last 30 and the players know that we are not doing things right. The opponents can win by playing better than you but not because they run more."

They were typical, run-of-the-mill comments from a player reluctantly facing the microphones.

Yet, it had been a far from normal morning at Racing, one of Argentina's most popular clubs and one of its most troubled.

The team had arrived to find threatening messages daubed in the street leading to the training ground. The most sinister read: "There are going to be bullets for everyone".

When the team came out to start practice, a group of around 15 men belonging to the club's hardcore group of fans demanded to speak to the players.

Migliore and Franco Sosa agreed to meet them but despite the climate of intimidation the goalkeeper gave the impression that the incident was a friendly chat.

"The supporters made us aware of their worries and their anger about the situation the team is in," he said. "And we asked for their support."

Many were shocked at the laid-back manner in which Migliore spoke of the incident.

Others said his reaction reflected the extent to which threats and violence have become part and parcel of Argentine soccer.

"A Racing player publicly judged that the threats were 'normal'," said La Nacion newspaper in an editorial.

"The impunity has reached such a degree that it seems they (the fans) are convinced that there are now no moral or institutional brakes on their behaviour."

IMMIGRANTS INSULTED

Argentine football suffers from chronic violence often blamed on organised supporters' groups called 'barras bravas'.

Traditionally, they have enjoyed a close relationship with the clubs, receiving free tickets and subsidised travel to away games.

Many groups are split into factions who fight sometimes amongst themselves and often side with club directors in internal political disputes.

Dutch security expert Otto Adang said European-style solutions to hooliganism would not work in Argentina.

"I'm shocked at the connections that the barras have with power," he said in an interview with the sports daily Ole.

"The European solution in Argentina is impractical. In Europe, the hooligans are concentrated in marginal groups with no relation to the system. Here, they are connected to a surprising extent."

A day before the threats to Racing's squad, more violence broke out.

Television pictures showed dozens of Boca Juniors fans fighting with police and among themselves before the game against Independiente, apparently angry that one supporter had been prevented from taking a gun into the stadium.

The same match produced an international protest when Independiente fans used the flags of Paraguay and Bolivia as an insult to Boca supporters.

Boca traditionally draw upon support from the working-class and many of their followers are reputed to be immigrants from the two neighbouring countries.

The following week saw more trouble as around 100 Boca fans fought amongst themselves near the Bombonera stadium before a game against Argentinos Juniors.

At least one man pulled out a gun and two people -- including an elderly woman bystander -- suffered gunshot wounds.

Almost at the same time, buses carrying fans of Argentinos Juniors and Racing Club to different games crossed paths near the centre of Buenos Aires.

The fans pelted each others' vehicles with stones, police arrived on the scene, blocked off the street and arrested 114 people.

HALF-HEARTED MEASURES

Similar outbreaks of violence in the past have brought half-hearted attempts of action from the authorities who have managed to temporarily diminish the problem rather than eradicate it.

In 2006, the Argentina Football Association (AFA) tried to ban away supporters at first division matches, a move which was overturned a week later after protests from the Players' Union.

This time, the AFA has announced an ambitious scheme, to be introduced next year, in which all fans must be finger-printed and obtain an electronic card, similar to a cash card, before they can attend matches.

The Minister of the Interior, Anibal Fernandez, has also announced that police will be able to bar known troublemakers from stadiums.

The only immediate measure from the authorities after the latest trouble was to bring forward the kick-off for Boca's Sunday visit to Tigre to 3 p.m. local time. It was the players, rather than the hooligans, who suffered, however, as the temperature on the field reached 30 degrees Celsius.

Cardiff - Swansea: Police appeal for fans to behave - 04/04/2009

Source: BBC

The man in charge of policing Sunday's south Wales football derby is appealing for fans to behave and enjoy the game.

Cardiff City and Swansea City meet in a key league match which could be the last between the clubs at Ninian Park.

Hundreds of police officers will try to prevent crowd disturbances that have marred previous derby games.

Divisional commander for Cardiff, Ch Supt Josh Jones, said: "Come along and enjoy what should be a very exciting match and just behave yourselves."

The police operation, costing an estimated £250,000, will include around 450 officers, horses and "spotters" looking for known troublemakers.

Officers will escort the 1,600 Swansea supporters, who are travelling in 33 coaches, into the stadium.

"They will get on coaches in Swansea and will be taken to a rendezvous point and then police officers will escort the coaches," said Ch Supt Jones.

"When they get near the ground, we will walk them to the ground and make sure they are nice and safe getting in.

"We will have plans in place to make sure the fans get safely back on to their coaches and travel safely back to Swansea."

Premier League

A total of around 35 arrests were made in two previous meetings - in the Carling Cup and the Championship - between the clubs this season at Swansea's Liberty Stadium.

Tensions will be high at the game, which kicks off at 1100 BST, with both teams pushing for promotion to the Premier League.

Ch Supt Jones said some pubs would be open before kick off, although most would not open until 1000 BST.

"We don't want to be draconian, we want people to enjoy the event," he said.

"By working with the licensees, working with the supporters' clubs and the like, we just want people to be responsible and that's our plea to them."

Cardiff City will move to a new stadium next season but the two clubs could meet again this season depending on their final league positions.

Police on standby at Cardiff-Swansea match

RIOT police will stage a £¼ million operation on the streets of Cardiff today in a bid to stop clashes between rival football fans before what is being billed as the biggest Welsh football derby in history.

Cardiff take on neighbours and arch rivals Swansea City at Ninian Park this morning in front of a sell-out 20,000 crowd and a live TV audience of millions.

And with both clubs in with a chance of reaching the Premiership for the first time, the game has taken on more significance than any of the previous 49 league derby matches staged between the two clubs over the years.

With clashes between the two teams’ supporters still fresh in the memory after a Carling Cup game at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium in November, police officers were being issued with full riot gear before the 11am kick off.

There were some 30 arrests after stones, bricks, bottles and glass were thrown at police after Swansea’s 1-0 Cup victory.

Police also issued CCTV pictures of 32 potential troublemakers they wanted to speak to, having been forced to use batons to quell fighting and keep fans apart

Later, Cardiff supporters claimed they had been left at the mercy of the Swans fans, who tried to force their way into the away section of the ground.

Yet the 450 officers being brought in to police today’s sell-out Championship match – the two club’s last-ever meeting at Cardiff’s 99-year-old home – were being told not to wear their protective helmets to avoid inflaming the fans.

Cardiff’s top police officer Josh Jones said that he did not want to make tensions worse by having officers in full riot gear at the start of the game.

Chief Superintendent Jones said: “It is less likely to cause tension if fans have a face they can talk to but the officers will have their helmets if people do step out of line.

“I am very conscious that there is a strength of feeling between some elements of both supporters that goes beyond your normal friendly rivalry.

“I am conscious of what’s riding on the game but there are tried and tested policing plans that we will be using. We are very used to policing big events.”

In Cardiff today there will be 150 officers inside the ground for the clash between the Championship’s sixth and eighth-placed sides.

Outside, further officers will be waiting in case of trouble as well as officers on horseback and plainclothes spotters from both Cardiff and Swansea looking for banned fans. Officers wil lalso patrol the city centre.

Chief Supt Jones said there were 134 Cardiff City fans with current football banning orders and around half as many Swansea fans.

He said: “Any banned fans seen near the ground will be arrested.”

Many Cardiff pubs had also dropped their plans to open for several hours before the game. Yesterday the earliest any landlord said he was opening was 10am – just an hour before kick-off.

British Transport Police said they were on alert to help and had dog units on standby if needed.

Inspector Sean Boyle said: “We had no incidents whatsoever on the railway during the two previous games at Swansea this season, and our officers actually assisted those at the Liberty Stadium.”

The 1,600 Swansea fans travelling to Cardiff for the game were being brought to the city in organised buses and only handed their tickets at an arranged meeting point.

Of those tickets, around 600 went on general sale with the remainder being sold to regular travelling supporters.

Phil Sumbler, of Swansea City Supporters Trust, said the restrictions were an “unfortunate but sadly necessary evil”.

“Everybody just hopes it goes off peacefully before and after the game,” he said.

Vince Alm, chairman of Cardiff City Supporters Club, said Cardiff fans would be mad to cause any problems and predicted there would be little or no trouble.

“The police here are used to big events and I really believe we won’t see a repeat of the siege scenes at the Liberty Stadium because of the police and the CCTV cameras covering inside and outside Ninian Park,” he said.

“Not many Cardiff supporters would want to get involved in anything after the game anyway. They’ll know not to get involved in anything because the police will get them on CCTV as they have done in the past.

“Cardiff fans would be mad to get involved or cause any trouble with the possibility of Premiership football just around the corner.”

That is something which will also be in the forefront of Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale’s mind. Any trouble inside the ground could lead to disciplinary action being taken against the clubs – including the docking of valuable points.

He has appealed for both sets of supporters not to spoil their big chance.

“Today’s match is being shown live on Sky television and both sets of fans have the chance to show the right sort of rivalry,” said Ridsdale.

“Football is about two sets of supporters being passionate about their team in the right way. Cheer your team and get behind the players.

“There will be 20,027 supporters in the stadium and we all urge both sets of fans to show their passion in the right way. My wish is for everybody to go home talking about the game and nothing else.”

He added: “There is a feelgood factor in Welsh club football. Both Cardiff City and Swansea City are making outstanding progress.

“Reaching the FA Cup final last season, watching the new stadium growing and our training ground open is all part of that.

“Swansea have had their new stadium a few years, earned promotion and have had an excellent first season in the Championship.

“Both clubs are still in the mix for promotion and that’s great for everybody.”

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones has worked to ensure today’s match against Swansea City is not built up too much in the minds of his players.

“We must try not to build any single fixture into something it isn’t,” said Ridsdale.

“Today is a football match between Cardiff City and Swansea City with three points at stake – that’s all.”

Cardiff fan arrested after coin-throwing incident

Season 08/09 - April Deanheadwound

A Cardiff supporter has been arrested after referee Mike Dean was struck by a coin at Ninian Park on Sunday.

Dean had to receive treatment for a wound to his forehead during the 2-2 draw with Swansea, and Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale has vowed to take action if the supporter is found guilty.

He told the club’s official website: “This behaviour has no place in football.

“The person has been identified and arrested and, if found guilty, the club will impose a lifetime ban.

“The club have personally apologised to referee Mike Dean and I can only reaffirm that this behaviour has no place in football.”

Arrests after ref hit by missile

Season 08/09 - April Deanheadwoundd

A man has been arrested after the referee at the Cardiff City and Swansea City football derby was hit by a missile thrown from crowds at the game.

Mike Dean received a cut after he was hit on the head by what appeared to be a coin during the first half of the match at Cardiff's home ground.

His wound was treated and he carried on with the game with a plaster over his cut. The match finished 2-2.

A further five arrests were made outside Ninian Park for disorder.

Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale said the man who threw the missile will be banned for life from any Cardiff City game.

He said the man was arrested after CCTV images were examined following the incident.

Mr Ridsdale said the incident made him "feel sick" and that he had apologised personally to Mr Dean, who is from the Wirral, Merseyside.

"It's a disgrace, it's unacceptable, makes you sick because obviously we spend a lot of time at Cardiff City trying to do the right things.

"Today was always going to be a high profile game. You don't expect idiots to do that and people like that have no place in football and certainly no place at Cardiff City football club."

He said they would be examining CCTV footage further to make sure just one person was involved in the incident as a number of coins appeared to be thrown at the same time.

But Mr Ridsdale insisted the club had done all it could to try to make the day as safe as possible.

"We've been working tirelessly with the police and Swansea City football club. There are more police here than any other football match," he said.

You don't expect idiots to do that and people like that have no place in football and certainly no place at Cardiff City football club

He said he hoped the club's "swift and decisive" action in dealing with the matter would show the football authorities that such behaviour would not be tolerated.

"There's always the problem that if one individual wants to get around the system they can do so but they will suffer the consequence," he added.

Witnesses said Mr Dean was hit by what looked like a coin while a player lay injured on the ground.

Cardiff manager Dave Jones said the incident overshadowed and soured a fantastic advert for Welsh football.

"It's sad because everyone will be talking about the man who threw the coin rather than a game which had everything - excitement, controversy and last minute penalty," he said.

Event commander Ch Supt Josh Jones confirmed a man had been arrested and police would be studying CCTV footage to identify others who were involved in throwing missiles onto the pitch.

"Five arrests have also been made outside the ground," he said.

"The post match investigation will aim to trace and arrest those individuals who became involved in incidents of disorder outside Ninian Park on Sunday.

"This process will be thorough and South Wales Police will not tolerate the type of behaviour displayed by a small but nevertheless significant minority of supporters.

"I would like to praise the majority of fans who heeded our advice prior to the match and contributed to the derby atmosphere.

"Anyone who was involved in disorder will be arrested and banned from attending future matches."

Police warning

Police had previously warned supporters to behave at the key league match, which could be the last between the clubs at Ninian Park.

Hundreds of police officers were in the city to try to prevent crowd disturbances that have marred previous derby games.

The police operation, costing an estimated £250,000, included around 450 officers, horses and "spotters" looking for known troublemakers.

Officers escorted the 1,600 Swansea supporters, who were travelling in 33 coaches, into the stadium.

A total of around 35 arrests were made in two previous meetings - in the Carling Cup and the Championship - between the clubs this season at Swansea's Liberty Stadium.

Tensions were high at the game, which kicked off at 1100 BST, with both teams pushing for promotion to the Premier League.

Cardiff City will move to a new stadium next season but the two clubs could meet again this season depending on their final league positions.

Paris Saint-Germain Face A Game Behind Closed Doors - 02/04/2009

Source : Goal.com

PSG appear set to be forced to play a game in front of an empty Parc des Princes as French football’s highest disciplinary body has rejected their appeal against incidents that occurred during their recent fixture with Olympique de Marseille.

L’Equipe has reported today that the Disciplinary Commission of the LFP (Ligue de Football Professional) are likely to force Paris Saint-Germain to play a Ligue 1 encounter in an empty stadium.

It is somewhat ironic that Paris Saint-Germain face the prospect of playing a game in front of an empty Parc des Princes for incidents during their recent fixture against Olympique de Marseille, who were last week given a similar punishment.

Marseille are aiming to procrastinate as long as possible with regards to the ban in order to push the match to the beginning of next season, thereby not hurting their title challenge. It is reported that PSG, who are also firmly in the title hunt, will attempt a similar tactic.

But these reports are based on rumour only at present and, officially at least, les Parisiens have been stoical. A press release on their official website reads, “Paris Saint-Germain were surprised to learn through the press this morning that a decision was taken against him by the High Commission of Appeal of the FFF [Federation Francaise de Football], which met last Tuesday.

“Indeed, at this time the club has received no notification of this decision, which is not available from the FFF.

“Paris Saint-Germain do not wish to participate in this ‘communication disordered’, and will wait for the notification of the decision before reacting and considering how to deal with it.”

PSG have been charged with allowing their fans to bring in pyrotechnics inside the ground. When the aforementioned match against Marseille kicked off, the field was shrouded in artificial mist. The club has already been fined a total of €400,000 this season for similar offences.

Colombia: Millonarios - Deportivo Cali - 05/04/2009

Source : Reuters

Player injured as team bus pelted in Colombia

A player was injured and taken to hospital when rival fans pelted Columbian soccer club Deportivo Cali's bus with missiles as it arrived at the stadium for a match against Millonarios on Sunday, players and officials said.

The kick off was delayed 45 minutes as Deportivo refused to take the field following the injury to Juan Guillermo Dominguez. The team were persuaded by league officials to change their minds.

"We want to set a precedent and we are not going to play," Deportivo Cali's midfielder Sergio Herrera had told local media. "The physical integrity of the players comes first."

Colombian media said that Millonarios fans hurled objects as Deportivo's bus as it arrived at the Campin stadium in Bogota, breaking some of the windows.

Hospital officials said Dominguez had suffered cuts to his face and a minor head injury.

Cali player injured in Bogotá fan violence

The Copa Mustang match between Millonarios and Deportivo Cali, played in Bogotá, was postponed by 45 minutes following fan violence. A Cali player was injured by a rock thrown at the visitor side's bus.
The rock, most probably thrown by a Millonarios fan, went through a window near Juan Guillermo Domínguez who was consequently hit by several pieces of glass. The player momentarily lost consciousness and required treatment at a nearby clinic.

Reportedly, police managed to arrest 18 fans of which only 5 are over the age of 18.

Following the incident, Cali players initially refused to play at El Campín. Millionarios did support their decision but after all decided to appear on the pitch as scheduled.

Cali officials eventually decided that the match would continue, albeit 45 minutes later than scheduled to give the away players a chance to prepare mentally and physically.

Millonarios president Juan Carlos López offered his apologies to Deportivo Cali fans, players and board members.

Police stop fighting in Newcastle after NUFC match

VIOLENCE flared in Newcastle city centre tonight as football fans clashed in the aftermath of the Magpies’ defeat to Chelsea.

Police were called to the Central Station area of Newcastle after receiving calls reporting fans fighting in the street.

The fracas between Newcastle, Chelsea and Rangers fans kicked off at around 7pm.

Onlookers said people were injured after fighting spilled out onto Neville Street.

But when police arrived no one would make a complaint and those hurt refused medical assistance or to be taken to hospital.

Unable to make arrests, the police officers calmed the situation down and separated and dispersed the rival groups.

By 7.45pm both the Rangers and Chelsea fans were on their trains back home.
