Police officers injured as Birmingham City and Wolves fans clash
TWO police officers were among a number of people injured as violence flared between rival fans in Birmingham following the top of the table Championship derby. Police said a number of “sporadic incidents of violent disorder took place” after Blues beat rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 last night at St Andrew’s. Cars and buildings were damaged as the trouble erupted in Birmingham city centre. “A number of people, including two police officers, sustained injuries although they are not believed to be serious,” a spokesman said. “A number of arrests have been made.” Police were today trawling through CCTV footage in a bid to identify troublemakers.

Tip-off leads police to hooligan weapons cache
POLICE yesterday seized firecrackers, Molotov bombs and razorblades hidden in potatoes outside the GSP Stadium in Nicosia, just hours before a local derby between arch rivals APOEL and Omonia kicked off.
The police had taken over the stadium at 2pm yesterday, as part of a pre-arrangement between all sporting bodies to avert violent scenes.
Officers located the dangerous materials after a young fan called police and warned them of what a number of hooligans were planning.
Thankfully there wasn’t any more trouble during or after the game, which ended with a 2-1 victory for league leaders APOEL, who are now considered this year’s unofficial champions.
Referring to the young man who informed police about the weapons, the head of GSP’s Security, Panicos Demosthenous said, “I would like to thank him; this indicates that even youths trust the police”.
He added, “It is criminal what could have happened here today. If these razor-laden potatoes were thrown, imagine what would have happened. Who would they have hit?
“Us, you and children who would have come to watch the match with their parents.”
Before the kick-off Demosthenous assured football fans, “with certainty”, that anyone entering the stadium would be checked and the match would be carried out under the utmost security.

No end to football hooliganism
FOOTBALL hooligans set fire to rolls of paper outside a recycling factory on Monday night, following the APOEL-Omonia match.
Following the game, fans leaving the GSP stadium in Nicosia started throwing firecrackers at the factory, setting the rolls of paper on fire.
Fire fighters arrived at the scene just in time to save the factory.
Police were yesterday investigating the area in a bid to spot evidence that would lead them to the culprits.
Around 20 rolls of paper were burnt in the fire, at an estimated cost of €5,000.
DISY vice president Ionas Nicolaou yesterday said the reason there was still violence in sporting areas was because those responsible for the troubles were going unpunished.
He called on the government to take specific measures to combat the phenomenon.
Nicolaou was referring to Monday’s football match between arch rivals APOEL and Omonia, where police found Molotov bombs, firecrackers and razorblades hidden in potatoes outside the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.
“The fact that a number of Molotov bombs and even razor blades in potatoes were found near the stadium proves the dangers of these antisocial behaviours, and this is something that needs to concern all implicated bodies,” he said.
The government, he added, needs to take immediate measures to deal with this phenomenon, “before it is too late”.

| Spartak Moscow - Spartak Nalchik - 05/04/2009
Source : RIA Novosti
Russian football team protest over sheep-lovers banner
The general director of Spartak Nalchik has lodged a complaint with the Russian football authorities over an obscene banner suggesting his team and its fans enjoyed intimate relations with sheep.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the capital's Luzhniki Stadium during Spartak Moscow's match against Spartak Nalchik, from the North Caucasus. Luzhniki hosted the 2008 Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester United.
The one-word message consisted of seven Cyrillic letters held up by a group of fans in the stadium's Sector C. One fan was arrested in connection with the incident, but the identities of the other fans have yet to be established. Spartak Moscow won the match 2-0.
Vladimir Balov told the club's official website that the banner was of an "insulting nature, offending the honor and integrity of the club, our fans and the population of the Kabardino-Balkaria republic." He also requested that the Russian soccer authorities discuss the matter at a disciplinary committee meeting.
The head of the committee, Vladimir Katkov, told Sport Express that the details of the incident were being established, adding that the issue would be raised at its next meeting.
Russian soccer chief and minister for sport Vitaly Mutko told the paper that the banner was "another excess" that prevented "our football from becoming completely civilized."
The public use of swearwords, or "mat" in Russian, is prohibited under the country's legal code and punishable by a fine or a custodial sentence of up to 15 days. However, the law is rarely enforced.
In another recent banner incident, Zenit St. Petersburg were forced to play their first home match of the 2009 season behind closed doors after the club's fans unfurled a banner insulting the memory of Lev Yashin, one of the country's greatest players, during a game against Dynamo Moscow late last year.
The banner read "Your Yashin snuffed it, and Dynamo will snuff it."
Lev Yashin (1929-1990) is the only goalkeeper ever to have won the European Player of the Year Award. He spent his whole career, from 1949 to 1971, at Dynamo Moscow.

| Greece: Cameras help catch five football hooligans - 08/04/2009
Source : Kathimerini
Five football fans were arrested yesterday for a vicious attack on police officers at a match that took place at the Olympic Stadium on December 7 of last year, the day after a teenager was shot dead by a special guard in Athens.
The five men, all AEK supporters aged between 20 and 30, were traced after their faces were caught on CCTV cameras. Some fans recorded footage on their mobile phones and posted it on the Internet, showing hooligans attacking police with chains, iron bars and plastic seats.
Four of the five men convicted had police records and one was later arrested during riots in central Athens on December 10. Authorities revealed yesterday that the small group of policemen that was attacked was made up of inexperienced officers from Viotia, north of Athens, who had been brought in because the force’s resources were overly stretched at the time by rioting in the city center.

| UK: TEN FANS CHARGED OVER THREATS - 09/04/2009
Source : Football365
Ten football supporters have been charged with threatening rival fans on a train, British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed.
The men were arrested after a Coca-Cola League Two game between Aldershot and Brentford on October 18 last year, and have each been charged with a public order offence for threatening behaviour.
The men were arrested following a series of dawn raids by officers from BTP and Hampshire Police last month.
A group of Brentford fans were under police escort in two train carriages when a large group of males, believed to be Aldershot fans, tried to confront them.
Those charged are Shaun Freeland, 20, of Roberts Road, Aldershot; Darren Lawrence, 37, of Gloucester Road, Aldershot; Samuel Lennox, 25, of St Michael's Road, Aldershot; Darren Payne, 24, of Guildford Road, Aldershot; Mark Purcell, 41, of Keith Lucas Road, Farnborough; Derek Renfrew, 18, of Church Road, Fleet; Benjamin Smith, 19, of Russet Close, Farnham; Liam Stone, 21, of Denmark Square, Aldershot; Ian McGuiness, 18, of Woodland Walk, Aldershot; and Christopher Peirce, 36, of Station Road, Aldershot.
All 10 were bailed to appear at Guildford Magistrates' Court on April 27.
Bail conditions restrict the men from travelling on the railway network or on London Underground for four hours before and after any Aldershot football match.
They are also banned from attending any Aldershot match, either at home or away.

| Arrests at rail station after Leeds, Sheffield and Sunderland fans clash - 05/04/2009
Source : Peterborough Today
POLICE arrested seven fans from rival football clubs after trouble flared at Peterborough railway station.
Trouble flared on Saturday evening after Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Sunderland supporters travelling home from matches got off at the city's station to change trains.
British Transport Police said there were several separate incidents of "low-level disorder" between 9.30pm and 9.50pm between various groups of fans.
There were about 100 fans on the platforms at the time and the majority were law-abiding.
Detective Sergeant David Strange, one of the investigating officers, said: "Nobody was reported injured, but it's important that we build a clear picture of what took place and I am asking anyone with any information about this incident to come forward and talk to us.
"Anyway with any information that could assist the investigation into the incident is asked to contact British Transport Police free on 0800 40 50 40 quoting incident 616 of 4/4/09."
Seven men aged between 17 and 48 were arrested at the station for public order offences and were taken into custody for further questioning. All seven were bailed to return to police on Tuesday, June 9.
Evening Telegraph columnist DJ Kevin Lawrence said he endured "94 minutes of pure hell" aboard a train packed with "thuggish" supporters as he returned from the Norwich City vs Sheffield Wednesday match at Carrow Road.
Speaking today, he said: "The main issue I had was how noisy they were in terms of the numbers of them crammed into tiny little carriages. "It was like being on a tube train with 95 per cent of football fans singing. They were too rude, too lewd and too boisterous. For the few that weren't fans, it was a hell hole."
He described it as the worst train journey he had ever taken and said he couldn't get out of the station quick enough.

Heavy-handed stewarding blamed after Chester City fans arrested
CHESTER City football fans have criticised ‘heavy-handed’ policing at an away match which saw two of them arrested.
Supporters claim they were not allowed to stand when celebrating goals in Chester’s 2-1 victory at Notts County on Saturday.
A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman confirmed a 45-year-old man from Ellesmere Port was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and a 28-year-old man from Chester was arrested on suspicion of assault.
Both men have been bailed pending further inquiries and will return to a Nottinghamshire police station next month.
Notts County has denied allegations on a Notts County fans’ website that one steward was suspended but says a steward received hospital treatment as a result of the trouble.
Chester City fan Michael McLoughlin described ‘disgraceful’ stewarding and policing.
He said: “From the start, the stewards were provocative and confrontational. They were insisting people sit down, even when celebrating a goal. The stewards seemed hell-bent on evicting people.
“One guy, being evicted for doing nothing but support his team, had a steward square up to him in a ‘go on then, have a go’ posture.
“This started the fighting, with many police becoming involved. We are talking about 20 teenagers here, yet middle-aged family men became involved and this was a direct result of aggressive stewarding. The ‘supervisor’ looked about 25 years old and was out of control.
“We'd each paid our £20 overpriced admission so why can't we cheer on our team without some idiots trying to ruin it?”
Barrie Hipkiss, chairman of the official supporters’ club, did not see what happened but was concerned at what he heard while travelling back on the bus.
He said: “I’m told it was very heavy-handed, the way they dealt with it. Instead of ejecting him in the usual manner, he pushed him down the stairs to get him out.”
Notts County spokesman Tom Loakes denied a steward had been suspended. He added: “I heard one of the stewards had to go to hospital as a result of being assaulted by a Chester fan.”
Mr Loakes found the idea laughable that fans would have been told off for celebrating a goal. “There’s a bit of realism required there,” he said.

| Norwich City football thugs jailed - 09/04/2009Source : Norwich Evening News Nine Norwich City fans were today beginning jail terms after going on the rampage in a city centre following a heavy defeat by the club. The yobs, as well as three other City fans who escaped jail, hurled missiles, bricks, concrete blocks and chairs at opposition supporters following the club's 4-0 defeat away to Leicester on February 16 last year. Yesterday at Leicester Crown Court the ringleaders were jailed for a total of five years and three months after a judge said it was “pure chance no one was hurt”. The three other City fans were given suspended sentences and orders to do unpaid work, whilst two Leicester City fans were also jailed for their part in the trouble. All of the defendants were given football banning orders for six years, in what was arguably the worst incident of violence involving Norwich fans for many years. Jailing them, Judge Michael Pert QC told the defendants: “Each of you bears responsibility for what the others did. It may be the case that each one of you has personal mitigation but this has to be set against what each of you did in public in the city centre of Leicester and the terror you brought to ordinary citizens. “It was pure chance no-one was hurt. It was no consolation to people in the city centre that you might have been a good father or a valued employee. “I have to send a message that this kind of activity has nothing to do with football, and it shows no consideration for the rights of innocent bystanders. It was gratuitous thuggery, and most of you don't have the excuse of youth and were at an age when you knew full well what you were doing.” The court heard that trouble had flared when a group of Norwich City fans left the match at the Walkers Stadium early and started walking into the city centre, where a group of Leicester fans were congregated. The court was shown CCTV footage taken just after 5pm in Loseby Lane and High Street in Leicester, in which the fans were seen to hurl missiles, bricks, concrete blocks and chairs at each other. One brick landed at the feet of a young girl standing nearby, but luckily no-one was injured. Philip Gibbs, prosecuting, said: “Members of the public were placed in danger and forced to either flee or take refuge in shops while the defendants threw whatever was available at the opposing side. Those participating had no regard for people simply going about their lawful business.” Ten of the Norwich fans had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to affray and three had pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of threatening behaviour. The Norwich fans jailed for seven months were James Asbery, 25, of Kingswood Avenue, Taverham, Nigel Broom, 38, of Orchard Road, Spixworth, Andrew Collison, 41, of Olive Road, Norwich, Gary Cox, 46, of Aldryche Road, Norwich, Leon Horton, 44, of Wilks Farm Drive, Sprowston and Ben Potter, 36, of North Park Avenue, Norwich. Mark Gilby, 44, of Greenacres Drive, Poringland, Mark Hipperson, 38, of Saxon Meadows, Bawdeswell and Michael Davies, 39, of Guernsey Road, Norwich, were jailed for three months. Adam Ford, 21, of St William's Way, Norwich, Thomas Stammler, 20, of Ferrars Court, Huntingdon and Paul Cossey, 21, of Marlingford Way, Easton, were given suspended sentences of seven months for two years and ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid work. Jamie Gilligan, 18, of Unthank Road, Norwich, who had previously pleaded guilty to affray, will be sentenced next week. Leicester fans Graham Anstiss, 45, of Wycombe Road, New Humberstone, and his son Damian Anstiss, 23, of Ditchling Avenue, Dane Hills, were jailed for seven months. Another Leicester fan, Craig McLean, 43, of Maplin Road, Leicester, pleaded not guilty at an earlier hearing and faces a retrial next month. Stephen Spence, mitigating for Asbery, said the root cause of his offending was that he could not hold his drink. He said: “He drinks to excess, is a troubled young man and needs to get to grips with his drinking problem. But there are signs that he is, and he has met a partner at work and has a responsible job.” Charles Myatt for Broom said: “He has expressed genuine remorse. He is the sole breadwinner for his family and his wife is now 30 weeks pregnant.” Collison's counsel Peter Barr said he was a married man with three children, and his last football related violence was 22 years ago. Mr Barr, also representing Cossey, said his client has aspirations to join the RAF. He said: “He had drunk about eight or nine pints, and did things he would not have done if he had been sober and is deeply ashamed of his behaviour.” Charles Myatt for Cox said the defendant was not looking for trouble when he left the match early, and Mr Barr, for Davies, said he was deeply shocked and remorseful, and had handed in his season ticket at Norwich because he wanted nothing more to do with football. Stephen Spence said Ford was young, of previous good character, and was a naive foolish youngster who went along with the crowd. Jonathan Seely for Gilby said it was a moment of madness and he bitterly regrets what happened. Mr Spence said Hipperson had 22 personal references which were handed to the judge. He said Hipperson started a printing company a couple of years ago which now employs seven people, and this was totally out of character. Charles Myatt said Horton was ashamed that he let himself and others down including his wife and six-year-old daughter. Jonathan Seely said Potter had written a letter to the Leicester Mercury expressing remorse, and Claire Matthews said Stammler was a thoroughly decent young man and this was an act of sheer stupidity and completely out of character. She said he had drunk to excess. After the sentencing, Leicestershire police inspector Rob Widdowson said: “We are pleased with the sentence and feel that it sends out a message that we will not tolerate any violence in the city of Leicester and will work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice.” For more on the case including an exclusive interview with one of those jailed see tomorrow's Evening News. | |

| No repeat of trouble at Forest v Bristol, officials say - 09/04/2009
Source : This is Nottingham
OFFICIALS at Nottingham Forest say they are not expecting a repeat of the violence which marred the club's last league game with Bristol City. Saturday's match is the first time the two sides have met since Forest were beaten 1-0 in a top-of-the-table clash at the City Ground in October 2006. Trouble flared after the game when up to 80 hooligans threw metal tables and chairs and pint glasses and beer bottles at Amici Wine Bar in Radcliffe Road close to the ground. Alan Bexon, safety officer at Forest, said: "The build-up to that game was the problem. "We were both near the top of the league and going for promotion and they brought more than 4,000 fans. "We've had no serious intelligence surrounding the game on Saturday. There will probably be around 1,400 fans coming from Bristol."

Chelsea fans' vicious attack puts Poole man, 43, in hospital
A MAN is in intensive care with serious head injuries after he was set upon by chanting football fans following a Champions League match.
The attack, described by police as “very vicious”, happened near Yates’s Bar in Poole High Street just after 11pm on Wednesday – less than two hours after Chelsea’s victory against Liverpool in the first leg of the quarter final.
A 43-year-old Poole man was followed into an alleyway by four young men and a woman, all chanting “Chelsea, Chelsea”. The men carried out the assault.
The victim, who was left critically injured lying on the ground, is now being treated in Poole Hospital for head and neck injuries, and is said to be in a stable condition.
Detective Constable Scott Brimicombe, of Bournemouth and Poole CID, said: “This was a very vicious and cowardly attack by these four young men who followed their victim out of Yates’s Bar and into the alleyway and carried out the attack.
“The four young men – who I believe are all around 18 to 20 years of age – were accompanied by a young woman and all five made off along Poole High Street towards the Dolphin Centre.”
One of the attackers has dark hair, was bare-chested and carried a white football shirt in his hand.
The woman with the four attackers wore a white zip-up top.
DC Brimicombe continued: “There were a lot of people celebrating in Poole [that] evening and I’m sure some of them will have witnessed this cowardly attack.”

| England: AFC Telford - Forest Green Rovers - Cupfinal - 08/04/2009Source: english press (thanks to the sender) Brick thrown at fan after cup finalA 14-year-old boy was left with facial injuries after a brick was thrown at the coach he was travelling in following the Forest Green Rovers tie with AFC Telford United. The bus carrying the boy was leaving the game after the Setanta Shield clash when a brick struck the bus at the junction at Springhill and Springhill Close at around 10.48pm, last night. Gloucestershire Police, Inspector Tony Fisk said: "One of the coaches taking away fans from Forest Green Rovers against Telford had a brick or a rock thrown through one of the windows, which struck a 14-year-old boy from Telford in the face. "He had a laceration to his nose and a cut to his right eye and was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital for treatment. There are no indications that the injuries were life changing but the potential was extremely serious." Forest Green Rovers FC posted a statement on its website, saying the club are saddened to hear of the injuries caused to a 14 year old boy and his father, who were subjected to a mindless act of vandalism "After every effort had been made by the club to welcome everyone to the final, which attracted almost 2500 people, including 600 children under 16yrs of age, it is this sort of act which causes our sport such a bad name," read the statement. "Obviously at this stage it is unproven whether the offender is associated with the club or even attended the match but the perception is clearly damaging to the image which the club wishes to portray. “This marred what was in all other aspects a great evening for the club and the local community, to show that we can stage such finals, only for one individual to throw an object towards persons who had no way to defend themselves or even be aware that an object was being thrown," said Colin Peake on behalf of the club. "We pride ourselves at the New Lawn in being a family orientated club and over the 20 years of being personally associated with this club, I cannot recall such an incident before. We made the final attractive for children to come, especially with it being screened live on television and the turn out of youngsters was higher than we anticipated. For one of those, to end what for him was an enjoyable evening, detracts from what the club is all about” “I personally visited both the young boy and his father at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital just after midnight and expressed on behalf of the club our deep regret that such an incident had occurred and wished both a speedy recovery. It was pleasing to find the young boy in good spirits despite his facial injuries. May I therefore seek the backing of all true supporters aligned to our club, to come forward with any information which may assist identifying the offender, to contact the police or myself at the club without delay." ********************************************************* Source: Shropshire Star Arrest after Bucks fan, 14, injuredA teenager has been arrested after a 14-year-old Telford boy was hit in the face by a rock hurled through the window of a football supporters’ coach. Devoted Bucks fan Ryan Asson was scarred for life when a lump of Cotswold stone was thrown at the vehicle taking AFC Telford United fans home after their side’s Setanta Shield triumph. Ryan was today being given the VIP treatment by his football “family” after he was personally invited to the New Bucks Head ground by club chairman Lee Carter. It follows hundreds of messages of support and sympathy from genuine football fans who were horrified the youngster should have been so badly injured. Ryan, of Dawley Bank, was with his father Kevin Stallard, of Newdale, on the Telford fans’ coach after their team’s Setanta Shield triumph on Thursday night. The coach was outside the Forest Green Rovers ground in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire when a rock smashed through the window and hit Ryan and his father, the youngster taking the brunt of the impact. Doctors took 20 shards of glass from Ryan’s eye and gave him 15 stitches to his cheek and nose but he is not expected to have any permanent damage to his sight. A 19-year-old man from Nailsworth was arrested in connection with the incident yesterday and bailed by police until April 24. Mr Stallard and Ryan’s mother Donna Asson were inundated with messages of support after yesterday’s story and photograph in the Shropshire Star. Mr Stallard said: “We just want to say thank you to everyone, including fans and officials from both AFC Telford United and Forest Green Rovers. “This sort of thuggery and mindless violence is not good for football, especially when it happens to your own son.” Mr Carter said: “We’ve invited Ryan and his parents to the New Bucks Head today for the game with Redditch to give him a shirt and introduce him to the players and manager. “We’ll also look after him for the rest of the season, paying for his travel to away games and looking at providing season tickets. “I could not believe what happened to Ryan. It really took the shine off our success.” ******************************************************** Source: BBC Young fan hurt in brick incident A teenage football fan had 15 stitches to his face after a brick was thrown through a window of a coach following a non-league cup final. The 14-year-old was hurt near Forest Green Rovers' ground in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, after AFC Telford won the Setanta Shield final on penalties. The AFC Telford fan, from Shropshire, was taken to hospital on Thursday evening and discharged after treatment. A 19-year-old man from Nailsworth was arrested on Friday and later bailed. He has been ordered to report to a police station on 24 April. The victim suffered cuts to his eye and face, Gloucestershire Constabulary said. 'Saddens everyone' Forest Green club secretary Colin Peak said: "It's something that in 20 years of being associated with the club we've not experienced before and spoilt what was a good evening, despite the result. "We went out of our way especially to make it attractive for young people to come to and it saddens me and it saddens everyone connected with the club." AFC Telford's supporters trust chairman, David Embrey, said he was on the scene at the time of the incident. Mr Embrey said: "It must quite literally have come whizzing over... my head, crashed into the coach and through the glass." He added he went to the hospital to check on the boy, who "was chipper". Mr Embrey said: "He was sitting up in the accident and emergency. He'd got his eyes closed because I think they put stuff into his eyes to try and get the glass out." The police spokesman added: "It appears that somebody has picked up a brick or rock and thrown it through the window and it struck this young lad in the face. "We are treating this incident extremely seriously due to the injury suffered by the young boy." The force, which was called at about 2250 BST on Thursday, has appealed for information.

Police arrest seven football fans before Kettering and Rushden clash
Police arrest football fans
Police have arrested seven football fans in a bid to prevent trouble at the local derby between Kettering Town and Rushden and Diamonds. Police arrested seven people in Rushden to nip any football-related disorder at the game at Nene Park in Irthlingborough. Police using new powers under Section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 arrested the seven men this afternoon in pubs around the High Street area of Rushden. Under this power, police are able to give people a direction to leave the area if it is thought they could cause or become involved in alcohol-related disorder. When the men failed to comply with the order to leave, they were arrested and taken to police stations in Wellingborough and Corby. There were no reports of violence or other incidents and police believe that by intervening early, they stopped trouble before it started. An 18-year-old boy has also been arrested at the ground on suspicion of causing criminal damage after he was asked to leave and a 21-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage at the ground, bringing the total number of arrests to nine. Chief Superintendent Ian McNeill, who was in charge of policing at the match, said: "We have had a high profile policing presence aimed to nip any potential trouble in the bud and while we have been friendly and fair, we have also been firm in tackling any threat of disorder. "Our robust policing reduced the chance of any incidents occurring and we have used the powers available to the full to ensure that the people attending the match and those going about their business in Rushden could do so in a calm and peaceful environment." Chief Superintendent McNeill said that there had been excellent co-operation between Rushden & Diamonds and Northamptonshire Police and there has also been excellent support from CCTV at Kettering. Around 60 officers were involved in the policing of today's match. Chief Superintendent McNeill said that police would be taking the same robust approach at the Kettering Town v Cambridge match on Monday.

Derby day police arrest 10 football fans
Seven men were arrested ahead of a Northamptonshire football derby during pre-emptive patrols in nearby pubs.
Police used new powers to detain the men this afternoon after they ignored requests to leave the pubs in High Street, Rushden, ahead of the clash with Kettering Town FC.
Two others were later arrested at the ground including an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old man on suspicion of causing criminal damage.
Chief supt Ian McNeill, who was in charge of policing at the match where 60 officers were on hand, said: "We have had a high profile policing presence aimed to nip any potential trouble in the bud and while we have been friendly and fair, we have also been firm in tackling any threat of disorder.
"Our robust policing has reduced the chance of any incidents occurring and we have used the powers available to the full to ensure that the people attending the match and those going about their business in Rushden could do so in a calm and peaceful environment."
Chief supt McNeill said the same level of policing would be in force at Monday's match between Kettering Town and Cambridge.

Two arrests following Preston derby against Blackpool
Two men were arrested after Preston North End's showdown with rivals Blackpool. The pair were detained by officers after the Lilywhite's 1-0 defeat at Deepdale. One PNE fan and one Blackpool fan was held - one for being drunk and disorderly and the other for a public disorder offence. A spokesman for Preston police said: "There were two arrests that were football related. "It was quite a successful operation from a policing point of view even though it took up a lot of resources to manage it. "It's been quite trouble free." Thousands of Blackpool fans descended on the city and mounted police escorted them from the train station to Assembly pub, Lune Street - which welcomed away fans for the clash. Around 50 police officers and 10 vans patrolled the area around the pub in a bid to keep crime and violence to a minimum. A spokesman for British Transport Police at Preston confirmed the railway station and trains had also been incident free.

Stoke City: 'Missile' thrown on to pitch sparks video review
STOKE City are reviewing video footage of today's home game with Newcastle after a missile was thrown on to the pitch, close to United defender Ryan Taylor. The object appeared to come from among Stoke supporters in the Seddon Stand, after 29 minutes, narrowly missing the Newcastle player. CCTV footage could enable Stoke to find the culprit, who would face a likely ban from the Britannia Stadium. Bryan Shaw, the chairman of the Stoke City Supporters Club, said: "No matter how heated things get on the pitch, it doesn't justify throwing things on. "Our supporters have had nothing but praise this season, but something like this could spoil that. To do something like that is downright stupidity." Staffordshire police made three arrests at this afternoon's game. One was for an assault on a steward, one for breach of a banning order and one, in the South Stand, for a public order offence
