The incident took place on Sunday afternoon. In the center of Mostar, a group of up to 50 men – predominately Bosnian-Croat supporters of the local football club Zrinski – attacked a bus carrying some 20 fans of football club Sloboda from the northern town of Tuzla, which was returning from the football game in held in Siroki Brijeg. Hooligans first stoned the bus and then threw a Molotov cocktail, setting the bus ablaze. The driver and passengers managed to escape from the bus and were soon after rescued from the hooligans by local police. A few people were slightly injured in the attack while the bus was completely burned out. After the incident, local police detained and questioned 15 people in relation to the attack and assured the press that criminal charges would be pending. Mostar mayor, Ljubo Beslic, strongly condemned the incident and offered any assistance from the Mostar city administration. The incident underlines still lingering ethnic tensions in Bosnia. Media speculated that the attack was a payback for burning of Croatian national flag at another recent football game.

After an appeal and just several weeks in prison, he was eventually released amid intervention from the club chairman, Papa Diouf, and even the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, but yesterday, he was arrested by police before the Ligue 1 encounter between Lille and Marseille after he assaulted a fan wearing a Paris St. Germain jersey. According to the French regional newspaper, Voix du Nord, Santos was accompanied by two other men when they attacked the 25-year-old PSG fan at the Lille-Flandres train station. All three were immediately picked up by police and taken into custody for violent conduct. The victim was taken to hospital with minor injuries and bruises to his face.

Source: http://blog.taragana.com/n/fans-barred-from-watching-football-match-due-to-past-fan-violence-40090/
Fans barred from watching football match
SYDNEY — Fear of ethnic fan violence forced football officials to hold a match between two teams in a near-empty stadium, with most spectators locked out and trying to watch from a nearby street.
The New South Wales Premier League ordered that the match between Bonnyrigg White Eagles and Sydney United be an invitation-only event Sunday in a bid to prevent fan violence between Serbian and Croatians — the heated club rivalry goes back 45 years.
Police and a heavy security presence ensured only accredited Bonnyrigg club members and private box holders at the Bonnyrigg Sports Centre were allowed to attend. Parents, partners and relatives of the players were barred.
The match ended 1-1. | |

| Cardiff: Football fan gets three-year ban for throwing ‘missile’ at referee - 21/04/2009
Source: http://www.paktribune.com/sports/newsdetail.php?nid=5368
CARDIFF: A football supporter was given a three-year banning order and fined £200 after admitting throwing a “missile” during this month’s Welsh derby between Cardiff and Swansea which saw referee Mike Dean hit on the head by a coin.
However, David Roberts from Pontypridd, south Wales, denied throwing the coin which struck Dean’s head and cut the referee above the right eye during the 2-2 draw at Cardiff’s Ninian Park ground on April 5. Roberts’s solicitor, Vaughan Britton, said his client had thrown a piece of chewing gum on to the playing area.
Following legal argument, prosecutor Helen Gambrill agreed for the charge to be amended to “throwing a missile” rather than “throwing a coin”.District Judge Richard Williams fined Roberts, who was also given a three-year football banning order from all grounds in England and Wales.

| Swindon - Bristol Rovers - 26/04/2009
Source: english press (thanks to the sender)
Police operation hailed as success
SWINDON Town’s clash with Bristol Rovers passed off without incident thanks to a successful police operation.
Five people, among them fans from both sides, were arrested for minor offences but large scale trouble was avoided.
The match, which saw Swindon win 2-1 to escape the drop, was brought forward to midday to avoid drunken misbehaviour.
More than 50 police officers, as well as officers from the British Transport Police, with dogs and horses were on hand to escort Bristol fans to and from the ground. The police helicopter was also drafted in to seek out any potential flashpoints between rival fans.
Although there were minor scuffles and insults from Rovers fans to passers-by, violence was averted.
PC James Neighbour, football liaison officer for Swindon Police, said: “When it’s a local derby the risk is intensified so it was important that the match was appropriately policed. That policing successfully got the supporters from the town centre to the ground and back to the railway station.
“We had a decent number of officers on duty, which mean’t that everything went off without too much incident.
“There were five arrests, mainly for public order offences.
“This fixture has had violence in the past so we were very aware of the potential there but you are always talking about a very small percentage of the people watching the match.
“Swindon fans generally are very good supporters and considering we had 11,00 people there and only five arrests it shows that it’s only down to a very small number.”
Extra train services were laid on for the event to ensure that fans were able to leave quickly and peacefully.
The fixture has attracted violence in the past, including two years ago when Town fans were attacked by 20 thugs armed with baseball bats.
In 2006 shoppers looked on as 40 fans clashed outside The Bedroom bar on Bridge Street. In the same year a clash between up to a 100 fans at the Queen’s Tap pub caused thousands of pounds’ of damage.

| Colchester United - Peterborough United - 25/04/2009
Source : The Gazette
Police arrest six as supporters are turned away from Colchester’s Community Stadium
SIX arrests were made after travelling supporters were turned away from Colchester’s Community Stadium.
Colchester town centre saw a heavy police presence on Saturday ahead of the U’s clash against promotion-chasing Peterborough United.
Dozens of officers were stationed outside pubs including the Playhouse in St John’s Street, as well as venues on the High Street and Head Street.
At around 2pm, officers on foot, horseback and in cars escorted around a dozen fans from the town centre and along North Station Road before releasing them at the train station.
Peterborough needed victory to clinch promotion from League 1, and thousands of fans travelled to Colchester anticipating celebrations.
Colchester United spokes-man Matt Hudson said the away allocation of 1,900 fans had been sold out and the Peterborough fans had largely helped create a strong atmosphere.
Essex Police said one person was arrested inside the ground and a further five were picked up in town, largely for public order offences.
Spokeswoman Heather Watts said both sets of fans were largely well-behaved and deserved praise.

| Football hooligans: Leicester and Coventry thugs riot - 07/04/2009Source : icnetwork.co.uk THESE exclusive images show for the first time how mob violence exploded on the streets of Coventry when rival gangs of soccer yobs clashed. The CCTV images of Coventry football hooligans clashing with Leicester fans, in Earlsdon, have been released by West Midlands Police to the Telegraph after the last of the supporters appeared before the courts. Up to 100 men were seen chanting, fighting and throwing missiles at each other, as the rival gangs clashed in Earlsdon Avenue South on February 23 last year. The violent crowd armed themselves with pool cues and balls and road signs, as they squared up to each other, forcing innocent bystanders to flee into shops and a nearby church. A city mother also told police how she pulled her two young children to safety behind a parked car to escape the baying mob of football hooligans on the rampage. The young family were forced to watch on in horror as Coventry and Leicester fans fought just yards away from them. The hooligans clashed for four and a half minutes before they were tackled by riot police arriving on the scene. Police based at Chace Avenue police station in Willenhall launched Operation Net News – which resulted in the largest number of people ever convicted in the city for one incident of football-related violence. The police investigation led to 36 people, including four juveniles, being put before the courts. The final three appeared at Coventry Crown Court on Friday to plead guilty to their involvement in the violence. Detective Constable Paul Parnum, based at Chace Avenue police station, spent 23 weeks trawling CCTV footage of the violent clash and soon the day’s events became clear to the investigating officers. Captured by the 24 cameras inside the City Arms pub, Leicester City supporters were seen arriving from 9.55am. Meanwhile a contingent of Coventry fans began congregating at the Spencer Sports and Social Club in Albany Road, just yards away. By the time two police officers entered the City Arms on routine patrols, just before 11.30am, there were already a large number of Leicester fans inside the pub. Detective Sergeant Stu Grundy, of Chace Avenue police station, said: “There was a uniformed sergeant on football spotting duties. "He is doing his rounds at various licensed premises. At one location in Earlsdon he saw the Coventry supporters. His next port of call was the City Arms. “When he went in there he saw 80 faces he doesn’t recognise. "He came out of the pub and got on the radio but the 80-strong crowd follow him outside.” The men were then captured on camera using their mobile phones. It is believed they were contacting the Coventry mob and telling them they have been noticed by the police, and the clash needed to happen right away. They are then seen putting on hats and scarves before leaving the pub. Soon after the Leicester men are seen filing out of the pub, while the Coventry mob are seen walking along Albany Road and through the Earlsdon back streets towards the City Arms, prompting numerous calls to 999 from nearby residents. Seeing the Coventry fans were not in position, many of the Leicester group walked backed inside the pub to wait – showing their faces to the pub’s CCTV cameras and providing the police with some of their best CCTV evidence. After identifying the men inside the pub officers were then able to track the individuals through the melee and establish the parts they played. Once back outside the pub, the clash began on the streets and the two officers – who had been in the area beforehand – were forced to wait until back-up arrived. Some arrests were made on the day and those near the pub at the time of the clash were videoed and their details taken. An incident room was opened at Chace Avenue police station and officers began the mammoth task of analysing CCTV footage from the scene. Det Con Parnum said: “The floor was littered with glass, pool cues and pool balls. “There was a family with two children walking up the street. They had to go onto a private drive and hide behind a car to get away from it.” Det Con Parnum spent 23 weeks analysing the CCTV footage frame by frame. Preparing a case for each of the defendants, a red circle was drawn around an individual and then they were tracked throughout the brawl. Det Sgt Grundy said: “It’s fair to say, even some of the defence solicitors have commented on the professional quality of the CCTV evidence.” As well as collecting evidence through CCTV footage, officers also began questioning witnesses, compiling more than 300 statements. Three months after the incident, the Coventry officers had collected enough evidence to execute a series of co-ordinated dawn raids across Coventry and Leicester. The raids impacted the force as a whole, with a total of 130 officers from stations across the West Midlands being drafted into assist in the swoops on 20 houses. Click here to view our exclusive police footage of the hooligan riot between Coventry and Leicester Further arrests were also made after CCTV footage was published in the Telegraph, showing some of the offenders. Det Sgt Grundy said: “If you compare this to a murder incident room it is totally different. “With a murder there is a lot of information to work on at an early stage. "With this you started with virtually nothing and you have to generate evidence by making arrests.” It is believed the violence was pre-planned, most notably because there had never been a clash of that type in Earlsdon before, the City Arms pub lies just outside the four-mile radius from the Ricoh Arena – the normal distance that must be adhered to in football banning orders and the time of day the clash took place. Det Sgt Grundy added: “This has wiped out a core element, which will prevent violence in the future. “This will act as a deterrent to others.” | |

| Oxford United - Northwhich Victoria - 26/04/2009Sourc:e english press (thanks to the sender) Pitch invasion spoils U's big matchLOYAL Oxford United supporters last night condemned a pitch invasion by a minority of fans which disrupted the second half of yesterday’s crunch game. Supporters said the invasion distracted the U’s – and could have prevented them from going on to snatch a win. The U’s were 1-0 down against Northwich Victoria near the end of the second half when four fans left the Oxford Mail stand and raced the length of the pitch. When the game restarted Oxford equalised in the 84th minute, but this sparked a pitch invasion involving about 50 people. After the invaders left the pitch after seven minutes and play restarted, Northwich went 2-1 up. The club last night refused to make a statement about the behaviour of fans. Simeon Bean, 32, from Botley, Oxford, said: “The pitch invasion seemed to destroy the concentration of the U’s players more than it did the players from Northwich. “It’s disappointing not to be in the play-offs, but unfortunately it was too much to ask of the players, who looked nervous in the first half. “Anyone who goes on the pitch is stupid and the club will have to answer a number of questions. This sort of trouble certainly won’t help Oxford United in the long run. “You have to question whether there were enough stewards to cope with 10,000 fans.” Ross Gardiner, 19, from Eynsham, added: “The people who ran on the pitch definitely disturbed the players.” Eddie Lay, 19, from Eynsham, said: “There must have been at least 50 people on the pitch and they lost us the game.” If Oxford had won and other results had gone their way, the U’s could have clinched a place in the Blue Square Premier League play-offs. The U’s needed to win and needed Torquay to lose at home to Burton but the U’s lost 2-1 and Torquay won 2-1. The pitch invasions at the Kassam Stadium contributed to seven minutes being added on at the end of the 90 minutes. Two of the pitch invaders scaled the fence at the car park end of the stadium before stewards could grab them. United goalkeeper Billy Turley stepped in to stop another man, tackling him to the ground. Mary Avery, 63, from Abingdon, said: “I’m sure there could have been a different result without the disruption.” Lez Dix, 47, from Didcot, who was at the game with son Micky, 15, said: “The invasion cost the U’s the second Northwich goal — it definitely didn’t help them.” Peter Mace, 35, a civil engineer from Woodstock, added: “Oxford could have won with more urgency up front. “It’s a shame about a few idiots on the pitch but the support this season has been phenomenal.” His girlfriend Litsa Alderson, 33, from Woodstock, said: “You can’t blame Billy Turley for grabbing one of the fans on the pitch— he just wanted to get on with the game.” Peter Foster, 53, the father of U’s defender Luke Foster, who was watching the game in the South Stand, said: “It’s disgraceful those fans ran on the pitch — they can’t be genuine supporters. “They ran on the pitch when Oxford were about to take a corner — it’s pathetic.”

Ugly scenes as pitch invasion signals Cobblers defeat
Cobblers fans face an agonising 90 minutes on Saturday after Stuart Gray's side failed to secure their League One survival against MK Dons last night, in a match marred by ugly scenes following a final whistle pitch invasion. Hundreds of supporters spilled onto the Sixfields pitch at the end of the disappointing 1-0 defeat and MK Dons players, including captain Dean Lewington, had to be escorted down the tunnel by police as frustrated fans threatened to attack them. Emotions were running high throughout the game as Cobblers strived to secure the point that would guarantee their League One status. But despite an improved second half showing after an abysmal first 45 minutes, they failed to find an equaliser. A bottle was thrown onto the pitch towards the end of the game following a controversial decision to award a foul against talismanic striker Adebayo Akinfenwa and referee Keith Stroud sprinted off the pitch after blowing the final whistle to avoid coming into contact with Cobblers fans. It is believed Lewington may have angered Cobblers fans by making a gesture at the end of the game but a club spokesman said the referee would be making no mention of the trouble in his report to the FA. Cobblers spokesman Gareth Willsher said: "At the end of the game a number of fans came onto the pitch and emotions were running high. "Luckily the police and stewards were able to get the visiting players off the pitch without any real incident taking place." Northampton Town now travel to Leeds United on Saturday knowing a point would see them safe. But a defeat, coupled with a victory for Carlisle over promotion-chasing Millwall, would see Cobblers relegated to League Two. Despondent Cobblers fan Steve Riches said: "Before the game I said to my wife that I hadn't been this nervous since our wedding day, God knows what I'll be like at Leeds. "Tonight was poor and I really can't see us getting anything on Saturday. We just have to hope Millwall can do us a favour." Former Cobblers director Martin Pell, aged 54 from Harlestone Road, said: "It was absolutely shocking and just sums up our season. We got it totally wrong. I was going to go to Leeds on Saturday but I'm not sure it's worth it to be honest." But despite the poor showing, one man amongst the 6,054 crowd who did enjoy it was Ron Taylor. The 52-year-old is on holiday in England from California and visited Sixfields to take in his first ever professional game. He said: "It was wild, I have never seen a crowd get so worked up. It was really exciting, such a thrill."
