| Barnsley FC - Wolverhampton Wanderers - 25/04/2009Source: english press (thanks to the sender) Wolves add Championship title to promotion amid chaotic scenesWOLVES were finally crowned Coca-Cola Championship winners to add to the promotion to the top flight secured last week, but the title came amid chaotic scenes at Oakwell as fans of both sides spilled onto the pitch at the final whistle to be separated by riot police. The league-leaders had been 1-0 down with just six minutes remaining thanks to a Jon Macken goal when West Ham loan star Kyle Reid found a sweet cross from Matt Jarvis to fire Wolves to the title. The goal sparked a mass pitch invasion by jubilant Wolves fans who had to be herded off by police and manager Mick McCarthy before play could be resumed. It was perhaps inevitable that when the final whistle finally came the fans were once again spilling past riot cops on to the pitch, leading to a mass exodus by both sets of players and a stand-off of some 20 minutes as mounted police kept the two sets of fans at bay. Mick McCarthy later admitted he had been unhappy at the scenes, although he understood that the largely exuberant Wolves followers were eager to celebrate only their second return to the top flight in 25 years. There were later claims from Barnsley midfielder Bobby Hassell that he was himself struck in the face by a fan amongst the throngs on the pitch McCarthy, returning to his hometown club, said: “It was unfortunate it marred it. We had 6,000 here and you can understand why they want to party. “I wasn’t happy though because someone jumped on me at the end. “I don’t know whether they wanted to give me a good hiding or celebrate.” Hassell said: “A couple of Wolves fans ran on. Obviously they were going to be excited but I got slapped in the face by one which was a bit out of order.” Wolves had left it late to get back into the game on a day in which they looked as though they were still nursing a giant hangover from last week’s promotion party. In the first half, McCarthy’s budding Champions were under pressure from a battling Barnsley side fired up by manager Simon Davey and knowing that a win was vital for their own league survival. Without injured striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, McCarthy chose Villa loan-man Marlon Harewood to start up front. Injured midfielder Dave Jones meanwhile was replaced by George Friend, with Dave Edwards moving from the left side to centre midfield. But Wolves lacked any real cutting edge and rarely troubled former West Brom keeper Luke Steele in the first half, while Barnsley had corner after corner in the first half as punch-drunk Wolves tried desperately to get a foot in the game. McCarthy chose to make a double substitution at half-time, with Sam Vokes replacing the ineffective Harewood and Friend making way for Kyle Reid. Initially the change freshened things up but Wolves were then caught with a sucker punch as first Daniel Bogdanovic and then Jon Macken forced a double-save from Wayne Hennessey. But as the Welsh International tried to keep it out a third time, Macken pounced again to head it home and send the home fans into raptures. Wolves, buoyed by their party-crazy fans – many of whom had donned fancy dress in the hope of having another reason to celebrate – might have dropped their heads but have shown their mettle of late. And after Vokes had created a number of openings, substitute Kyle Reid popped up to connect with a fine Jarvis cross to fire the ball home past Steele. Reid, hoping to make his stay at Molineux permanent at the end of the season, spent time at Oakwell during his nomadic career and tried not to celebrate his Wolves goal too vociferously, but then found himself swamped by fans in the first of the pitch invasions. As McCarthy ordered the fans from the field, play resumed and the Wolves celebrations on the terraces reignited. As referee Kevin Friend blew the final whistle the players made for the tunnel as the fans engulfed the field for the second time. This was no Blues-Leeds riot, but the stand-off took police a full 20 minutes before the fans dispersed. | Hartlepool United - Leeds United - 25/04/2009Source: http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk (thanks to the sender) Supporters arrested after Leeds United pitch invasionSix football supporters were arrested during Leeds United's League One clash with Hartlepool United on Saturday as a pitch invasion brought the match to a standstill. The game at Victoria Park was halted for a short time with 10 minutes gone after fighting in the Millhouse Stand saw a number of supporters spill onto the field of play. Several of those fans - thought to be Leeds supporters in a home section of the stadium - ran towards the away end, with at least one climbing over the barriers and in amongst United's travelling contingent. Police and stewards restored order and the match restarted soon after. A Cleveland Police spokesman said the fans were taken into custody for invading the pitch and for public order offences. He said: "Five of them were arrested at around the same time for one incident. The other was arrested later, but in connection with the same incident. "All the arrests were made during the game." The spokesman was unable to say which team the fans supported. However, the YEP understands the sixth man arrested had been in amongst the home fans when fighting broke out, before he ran to the away end, climbed barriers and joined the Leeds supporters. The other five arrests followed trouble in Victoria Park's Millhouse Stand, which erupted about ten minutes into the game and saw some fans spill onto the pitch. The match was held up briefly while police and stewards restored order. It finished with a 1-0 victory for Leeds. Saints will kick off next season in the third tier for the first time since 1960 and on minus 10 points after the Football League penalised them this week for going into administration this month. Their players did at least show some fight in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Burnley, but sadly so did the supporters who charged on to the pitch at the final whistle and confronted the travelling fans. And now they must start the new campaign with minus-10 points –– and that handicap could prevent the club finding a new buyer, so this game could prove to be the club's very last at home. While the club's administrators still believe they will find a new purchaser, with two parties interested, the prospect of funding massive debts and financing a club that starts in League One with a massive handicap is hardly going to help the cause. Not only do Southampton face the prospect of playing in the lower tiers with one hand tied behind their backs, but they could face an investigation by the Football Association into the ugly scenes that followed at the end. Hundreds of Southampton fans ran to the end housing 2,000 Burnley fans, and a smoke canister was hurled. Amid this mayhem, Southampton's Paul Wotton was being treated after losing two front teeth. He was eventually able to walk off, but it was a sad ending to what had been a gutsy performance against the odds. Southampton manager Mark Wotte said he was disappointed the invasion prevented his players from a lap of thanks to their long-suffering fans, but was proud of his players' response to a difficult period. "I am proud of the way we went down," said Wotte. "I am sad we couldn't thank the fans because they have been fantastic and it is them who have been punished for something that isn't their fault." Southampton were denied a win when David McGoldrick's penalty was saved by Burnley goalkeeper Brian Jensen. Burnley, for their part, are almost certainly in the play-offs, but for long spells they were outplayed as Southampton took charge and the lead after 11 minutes when Simon Gillett fed Bradley Wright-Phillips and his shot deflected off a defender and beyond Jensen. There was a sense of injustice surrounding the equaliser when Jan-Paul Saeijs was adjudged to have fouled Martin Paterson and Graham Alexander converted the penalty. But Southampton continued to press and regained the advantage just before half-time when, after Jason Euell's shot was parried, McGoldrick converted. The chance to add a third was offered when Euell was fouled by Rhys Williams but McGoldrick's poorly-struck penalty was saved. Now it was Burnley's time to dominate and, in the 67th minute, Robbie Blake's free-kick bounced around the area before Clarke Carlisle claimed Burnley's second goal. And seconds later Burnley should have been ahead when substitute Jay Rodriquez, one-on-one with Kelvin Davis, allowed the goalkeeper to save his first effort and smother his second. ******************************************************* Source: http://www.thisishampshire.net/news/4320488.Fans_clash_as_Saints_are_relegated/ Fans clash as Saints are relegated Saints fans' hopes of avoiding a ten point deduction at the start of next season were dashed today. Real Zaragoza was followed by about 300 of their supporters who were attacked by a mob of radical locals who don't have nothing to do with local team. Bottles and bricks were threw at Zaragoza fans when they were inside a restaurant. Local basque police forces have arrested 12 people. It seems these people are members of mobs of Osasuna (Indar Gorri) and Real Sociead (Pena Mujika).

| Police ready for Sheffield football clashes - 23/04/2009
Source: http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/Police-ready-for-Sheffield-football.5194390.jp?CommentPage=2
POLICE are gearing up for potential trouble between Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday fans on the last day of the season. South Yorkshire Police says it will mount one of the biggest operations of the year for the game at Hillsborough on May 3.
Extra officers will be on duty, the force helicopter will be used to monitor the movement and behaviour of fans, there will be 'spotters' in the crowd looking for known troublemakers, and CCTV cameras will be rolling to ward off potential trouble afterwards.
Although clubs still have a couple of games to play, Cardiff are currently in a play-off position, fighting for a place in the Premier League. Depending on how results go, Cardiff could potentially end up getting knocked out by the Owls - and having to grit their teeth as Sheffield United either retain their play-off spot or win automatic promotion.
Assistant Chief Constable Andy Holt, head of territorial operations for South Yorkshire Police, said the force had to be prepared for all eventualities. Around 3,500 away fans are expected to descend on Sheffield for the crunch Owls match.
He said the fact the Owls game is to be played on a Bank Holiday Sunday, kicking off at 1.15pm, will bring added problems because of the number of people who may be out drinking before or after the game.
"There will be a huge policing operation - we have to be prepared for all eventualities depending on how the results go," said ACC Holt. "It is possible Cardiff could be knocked out of the play-off positions by a Sheffield team while another Sheffield team retains its place, and potentially that could create a number of problems."
And he warned Cardiff has a notorious set of travelling fans who have caused problems previously.
"Games involving Cardiff City always cause problems," he said. "They have done so many times."
Last September trouble flared between rival fans after Cardiff played Sheffield United.
Away fans had their coach showered with bottles, bar stools and glasses as it was parked up near The Railway pub. The missiles shattered a window, covering passengers on board in shards of glass.
Sheffield United fans claimed they retaliated after Cardiff supporters threw objects at them first as they sat in the pub's beer garden with their children.
And last season around 30 Cardiff City fans were arrested before their team played at Hillsborough.

EASTWOOD Town clinched promotion to the Blue Square Conference North with victory over Ossett Town this afternoon.
The final whistle brought memorable scenes at Coronation Park as fans invaded the pitch to celebrate.
In the end, the Badgers' 2-0 win proved irrelevant as Ilkeston Town slipped to defeat at Whitby, meaning Eastwood won the Unibond Premier League title by five points.
Former Hucknall man Danny Holland put them in front with a hotly disputed penalty in the 38th minute.
The visitors had a spot kick themselves in the second half but Ian Deakin saved Tom Greaves' penalty.
The Badgers wrapped up the points in the 80th minute when Peter Knox slotted home from the edge of the box.

| Millwall FC - Leyton Orient - 25/04/2009
Source: http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/football/4320489.Millwall_2_Leyton_Orient_1/
In the Lions den it was Church who gave Orient hope, before an ex-O came back to haunt the visitors and snatch all three points for Millwall.
Gary Alexander, a hero of Orient's 2005-2006 promotion campaign, scored twice for the host's to cancel out Simon Church's opening strike.
But the real action started with the final whistle, with low low farce.
Then, around 600 home fans invaded the pitch and rushed to the away end, where they taunted Orient's big travelling contingent, high above in the top-tier.
There was low comedy too, as a tanoy announcement warned against corner-flag theft.
Millwall at the New Den have made big efforts to dispel their controversial reputation.
But the incident spoke loudly of the fact that old habits die hard. The CCTVs on sticks at the front of the away-end to film how Lions fans treat their guests look to have been well placed.
The shameful incident finally ended with a pitch-wide row of orange-jacketed stewards and police horses on the pitch marching up-field to force bonkers fans into a retreat.
The game had been hard for Orient, as they were forced to soak up long spells of pressure, after McGleish missed a penalty in the eighth minute.
20-year-old Church struck for the guests with the first goal of the game against the run of play, on 47 minutes.
He applied the finishing touch into the far corner past keeper David Forde from Scott McGleish's pass and before him, keeper Jamie Jones's big punt up-field. The strike silenced the noisy Lions fans and put Orient's big travelling support on cloud nine. But not for long.
Alexander, who last helped transport the fans to that level during Orient's promotion clincher three years ago, levelled the tie on 70 minutes with a thumping shot from just inside the box.
Then, in the 86th minute he applied the header at the far post from James Henry's deep cross to seal three points.
And then the action began.

Colombia's football authorities have been criticised for their reaction after Deportivo Cali's bus was stoned on its way to a match with Millonarios.
Deportivo full-back Juan Guillermo Dominguez was hit by flying glass and taken to hospital when the vehicle was attacked by Millonarios supporters as it approached the Campin stadium in Bogota.
Despite the incident, the game went ahead – much to the anger of Deportivo Cali.
“The business side and all the corruption came first,” said Deportivo goalkeeper Sebastian Blasquez. “All they [the directors] were interested in was the business.
“The match should have been postponed until the player was out of danger. It didn't occur to anyone that the player could suffer complications which could have put his life in danger. I'm indignant that the match was played. I think it's the first time I have felt sadness instead of happiness when I've been playing a match.”
“The only person who behaved like a gentleman was [Millonarios goalkeeper] Oscar Cordoba, who stood firm in his belief that we shouldn't have played.
“I felt a mixture of anger, impotence and shame, because we played a match in which the meaning of football was totally lost.”
Former Colombia coach Hernan Dario Gomez, now in charge of Millonarios's local rivals Santa Fe, also criticised the decision to play.
“In those circumstances, I wouldn't coach a team,” he said. “It was a very serious aggression but the decision to play the match was even more serious. It was as if they supported the aggression.”
Columnist Gabriel Meluk, writing in El Tiempo, agreed with Gomez. “The game between Millos and Cali should not have been played. What were they waiting for? For him to lose an eye, or for them to kill him?”
As it happened Dominguez was released after treatment for cuts to his face – dangerously close to his eye – and no action was taken against Millonarios.
The perpetrator, 29-year-old William Quinteros, was arrested around one week later after a high-profile police search. However, after publicly apologising, he was released on bail and ordered to attend a hearing with public prosecutors.
Football violence has become a serious problem in Colombia recently and the authorities have so far made little headway in fighting it.
Most clubs are now supported by Argentinian-style “barras bravas” who reportedly get hooliganism training from their counterparts down south.
Hooliganism apart, the start of the new season has been notable for the dismal form of Atletico Nacional, who only two seasons ago completed the double by winning both the Opening and Closing championships.
Former Ecuador coach Luis Fernando Suarez quit after 12 games with Atletico at the bottom of the table. Club president Victor Marulanda also offered his resignation.
“There's one player in this group, Humberto Mendoza, who I would stand up for but I would get rid of the rest of them,” said Suarez.
“The club deserves respect and… out of dignity, we [Suarez and his staff] have offered our resignation to the president.”
Marulanda responded: “I'm a failure, I don't have a team which convinces anyone, we're eliminated and I will speak to the directors about continuing with the team.”
Millonarios – as usual – and Santa Fe were the other two big clubs to struggle. Gomez quit Santa Fe after a home defeat by Quindio but changed his mind after an appeal from his players.
