Police investigating video of officers clashing with football fans following Wigan Athletic vs Preston North End match
The video, which has been widely shared on social media today, February 8, was recorded following this afternoon's game at the DW Stadium, a fixture which saw the visitors run out 2-1 victors and continue their push for promotion.
The clip shows several officers involved in physical altercations with several supporters, believed to be Preston fans.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘We are aware of a video in circulation following the Wigan Athletic vs. Preston North End game at the DW stadium this afternoon. All available footage is being reviewed in line with normal procedure.”
Many fans have voiced their disapproval at the behaviour, while others say the police did not allow enough time for Latics fans to leave the stadium before allowing Preston supporters to leave.
Jake Nicholson said on Twitter: "Very nasty scenes near the bridge today, both sets of fans were poor. Wigan fan chucked a flare off the bridge into a group of fans including children. Thought the police messed up big time by not holding back the preston fans for 10 minutes".
He added: "I was right next to it and there were definitely children. Just think it’s childish".
"Well I’m a Wigan fan and I was there No need for it at all. Even so there were loads of children there and I don’t care if they are a preston fan or not."
Nathan Sinclair, another supporter, said there had been clashes outside the East Stand before the match too.
Another fan Eddie Swindells posted: "There were a few Wigan fans being pushed away by police then a Preston fan tried to run past the police and then it kicked off."
Greater Manchester Police had already beefed up security for the Lancashire derby, with mounted divisions present in and around the town centre. Police horses and vans were later spotted boxing in fans in Prescott Street, which forms part of the route many fans take to the stadium from the railway stations.

Police officer smashing '16-year-old' football fan in the head with a truncheon during fight - leaving blood pouring from his head
A South Yorkshire policeman has been caught on camera brutally beating a young football fan in the head with a baton.
Footage captured by onlookers shows the young man being knocked to the ground from the force of the blow before he lies on the pavement in a pool of his own blood.
Two men are initially seen squaring up to each other in Barnsley after the Barnsley v Sheffield Wednesday game this afternoon at 4.55pm.
A policeman runs into frame and a crack is heard as he smacks the young man on the side of the head.
The onlooker who filmed the incident, Spencer Hall, 17, said: 'The boy who was injured was fighting another boy about the same age, they looked roughly 16.
'Neither of them really hurt each other and I can't remember seeing a punch land.
'This was when the officer came running towards the boy and struck him on the skull full force.
'This was clearly with intention to damage him and not to break up the fight, which could have been done easily, especially considering the size of the officer.'
He added: 'There is often an aggressive atmosphere at derby games but I've never experienced it to be this bad.'
After the boy lands on the pavement with a thud, a woman claiming to be his mother runs over and starts screaming at the police officer.
She shouts: 'What have you done to my son you fucking idiot!'
Other football fans in the area can be heard saying: 'There's no need for that. Leave him alone!'
While the boy lies in shock on the pavement the police officer who hit him continues to hold him down as another asks people to step back.
Another onlooker who filmed the incident said that police smashed his phone after they realised he had filmed the incident.
Warren Wright said on Facebook: I saw the whole incident, the copper must have run 50 yards and had time to think about the situation. He could have quite easily hit him below the head, that was calculated, he knew exactly what he was doing.
'I insisted to another copper that I wanted to report an assault and got told to go away. PC 3139 will get away with it, SYP corrupt to the core.'
South Yorkshire Police have said they are investigating the incident and have been contacted for comment.

2 injured, game abandoned as fans battle on terraces in Argentina
An Argentine second division match between Independiente Rivadavia and Atlanta was abandoned on Sunday after police said they were unable to guarantee safety as armed fans fought on the terraces.
The referee took the players off the pitch shortly after kickoff and halted the game for 20 minutes as the fighting broke out before eventually deciding to call the match off with the score at 0-0.
Television pictures showed fans armed with knives and burning flags behind one of the goals in the Mendoza stadium.
Both clubs said on Twitter the game had been abandoned as police were unable to ensure safety.
Argentine media group TyC Sports reported two people had been injured.
The incident is the latest in a long line of violent clashes in and around Argentine football grounds with much of the violence related to the barras brava, the hooligan ‘firms’ attached to many of the clubs.
