Israel : Three Betar fans arrested outside team practice - 01/02/2013

Source : http://www.jpost.com

Dozens of hardcore fans protest outside Betar's practice over team's decision to recruit 2 Muslim players from Chechnya.

Dozens of hardcore Beitar Jerusalem fans protested outside the soccer club’s Friday practice in Jerusalem over the team’s decision to recruit two Muslim players from Chechnya. Police arrested three of the fans on Friday outside of the team’s practice facility in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Bayit Vegan.

One fan threw rocks at the players’ cars, another climbed a fence and attacked a guard, and a third tried to break into the car of Betar chairman Itzik Kornfield.

Related: •Just what the doctor ordered: Mac TA rolls•Mac TA, Betar to face off in State Cup; Reds get Kfar SabaBetar fans are furious over owner Arkadi Gaydamak’s announcement that the club is set to sign two Muslim players Dzhabrail Kadiyev and Zaur Sadayev from the Chechnyan team Terek Grozny. During last Saturday night’s game against Bnei Yehuda, fans raised an enormous banner that read “Betar pure forever” and sang anti-Arab chants.

Police have arrested more than a dozen people involved in Saturday night’s incident with the banner. The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court barred the entrance of 50 Betar fans to the match against Umm el Fahm on Tuesday. In addition to the specific fans barred from Tuesday's game, all of the fans arrested have been banned from attending soccer games for the rest of the season and forced to pay a fine of at least NIS 1,000.

"I believe in the strength of the players and the strength of our club,” Betar chairman Itzik Kornfein told Jerusalem Radio on Friday.

“This is the right thing to do and I'm calling on the police and the courts to do what they need to do and punish those who break the law.

"The Chechen players toured Jerusalem on Thursday and received a warm welcome from the residents. I can promise that they are here to stay." Alarmed and angered by increasing incidents of racism, President Shimon Peres sent a sharply worded letter to the IFA prior to Tuesday’s match.

Peres appealed to the IFA and all other relevant authorities to do their utmost to quell all expressions and manifestations of racism inside and outside soccer stadiums.

The anti-Muslim bigotry was met by wide-scale condemnation in Israel and abroad. Israel Football Association chairman Avi Luzon warned that the club could be shut down by soccer’s governing bodies, FIFA and the UEFA, if the racism in the stands continues.

Chelsea fans jailed for bringing smoke grenades into the Liberty - 01/02/2013

Source : http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk

TWO Chelsea fans have been jailed after taking smoke "grenades" into the Liberty Stadium for their club's semi-final match against the Swans.

Jamie Greenwood and his cousin Harry, both described as avid Chelsea fans, are today beginning terms of 28 days behind bars.

A third male who was arrested at the game, who is 17, cannot be identified because of his age. He was given a six-month referral order.

The trio were all found with Enola Gay smoke "grenades" either in the vicinity of, or inside, the ground on January 23.

They all admitted having the article during a designated sporting event, an offence under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc) Act 1985.

Harry Greenwood, 19, of Bernhardt Crescent, London, and Jamie Greenwood, 26, of Cherwell House, London, were both also given football banning orders lasting six years.

Chelsea have already revoked their season tickets.

The youth was given a three-year order, which bans them all from entering any regulated matches in England and Wales or elsewhere.

Prosecutor Linda Baker told Swansea Magistrates' Court the grenade was found on Jamie Greenwood as he was searched on his way into the ground.

He told a police officer it was "a stupid thing to do".

After telling police he had arrived at the game with six others, police and stewards began tracking down the group.

At 8.45pm, Harry Greenwood was approached and produced another grenade from his pocket.

He admitted knowing it was an offence to take the item into the stadium. He also admitted he would have released the smoke if Chelsea had scored. After his arrest he said: "It was stupid. I have to accept everything that may come my way."

The youth originally denied having any items with him but later produced the grenade from the waistband of his jeans.

Jamie Greenwood and the youth admitted buying the grenades for £3 each. If released the smoke would have lasted for 90 seconds, Mrs Baker said.

She said the use of flares and other pyrotechnics at football matches had doubled each year for the last four seasons.

Mrs Baker read from the side of the three grenades where it said it was an offence for them to be let off in a public place.

"The use of such devices puts supporters, staff and officers at risk of harm," she added.

Phil Huxtable, representing all three, said they were remorseful and they were "shaken up" by their arrests.

"When they purchased them, it wasn't their intention to cause trouble as such. It was their intention, should Chelsea have scored, that they would let them off. Fortunately that didn't happen."

Jamie Greenwood had a previous conviction for ticket touting. Superintendent Phil Davies said: "The behaviour of these Chelsea fans was totally irresponsible and I am pleased that they were arrested and put before the courts following a proactive policing operation.

"The football banning orders made by the court will be enforced by police forces to ensure the vast majority of fans who are well behaved will be able to enjoy matches in a safe environment."

Deputy District Judge Neil Thomas said: "It's the potential for disaster that makes this case so very serious and only a custodial sentence can be justified."

Three Chelsea fans receive ten-year bans - 01/02/2013

Source : www.weaintgotnohistory.com

The Chelsea fans who were caught with smoke bombs at the Swansea game have all been handed lengthy stadium bans from the club

TThree Chelsea fans got themselves in some legal trouble at Swansea last week, bringing smoke bombs into the stadium despite it being a violation of the law. The club has released statements in the past condemning that sort of behavior, and backed those statements up with some heavy punishments this morning.

While part of their punishment included being banned from football games everywhere for anywhere for 3-6 years, Chelsea have added an additional punishment for all three. None of the offenders will be allowed inside of Stamford Bridge for 10 years, and the club had the following to say on the matter:

'Chelsea Football Club has received confirmation that two of the three Chelsea supporters arrested in possession of smoke bombs at the Capital One Cup match at Swansea last week have been sentenced to 28 days imprisonment.'

'They have also been banned from attending football games for six years, while a third supporter has been banned for three years. All three will be banned from Stamford Bridge for 10 years by the club.'

Many are calling the punishments "harsh", but I'd have actually been fine with seeing them increased. Bringing smoke bombs and flares into a crowded stadium and hurling flaming objects onto the field is just idiotic, and while the blue smoke may look "pretty", the risk to players, officials, and fans who aren't idiots is just something that needs to be avoided. Well done Chelsea, the way you've handled fans that make complete buffoons of themselves in the stands this season has been far better than your handling of the coaching situation.

Dortmund boss calls for courts at German stadiums - 02/02/2013

Source : http://www.globalpost.com

In the fight to rid Germany's football grounds of violence, Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke has called for law courts to be held at stadiums to immediately jail offenders.

"It would help unbelievably if you could look up violent offenders immediately," Dortmund's managing director Watzke told west German newspaper Der Western.

"Anyone offending would have to explain himself if he didn't turn up for work (on Monday)."

Last October, more than 200 fans were arrested after rival Borussia and Schalke fans clashed in Dortmund before the Ruhr derby.

Watzke says it is not right that fans can act violently in football grounds at the weekend, then walk scot-free after being arrested, charged and waiting to be tried.

Violence at Germany's football stadiums is a hot topic here after the 36 clubs in Germany's top two league's voted last December to accept the German Football League's (DFL) 'Safe Stadium Experience' paper which outlines new security measures.

Full-body searches are part of the new regulations, allowing clubs to search fans suspected of bringing items such as flares, dangerous weapons or banners with offensive slogans into stadiums.

The Bundesliga match between Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt was briefly delayed a fortnight ago after hooligans lit flares and fireworks, which began landing on a corner of the pitch.

"If you want to prevent people bringing pyrotechnics and flares into stadiums, you have to tighten the controls," said Watzke.

"And then people will cry: 'Our liberty is being curtailed!'

"Everyone knows what they want, but they want to take the gentle approach.

"That won't work. It's important to have prevention and dialogue."

Recent reports suggest a minority of Dortmund fans have right-wing views, an element Watzke wants to see removed from their Signal Iduna Park stadium.

"It has been reported, quite terribly, that there are people with right-wing extremist backgrounds in the Dortmund stands," he said.

"Logically, 1.9 percent of voters in Dortmund vote for the right, so if football is a reflection of society, then in the 80,645 spectators in our stadium, 1532 vote for the right.

"We have said clearly: we only want to have people who respect basic laws.

"Anyone who doesn't, with words or deeds, we will throw out!

"We have a strong package of measures against anyone with right-wing tendencies."

Australia : Police blast rogue fans for Etihad damage - 04/02/2013

Source : http://www.smh.com.au

Police have blasted the rogue soccer fans who caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage at Etihad Stadium, saying it was the worst display of hooliganism they have seen at any sporting event in Melbourne.

About 170 seats were destroyed at the stadium during the Melbourne Victory/Melbourne Heart derby on Saturday night. 10 flares were also lit during the game – nine inside the stadium, packed with about 41,000 people, and another outside the venue.

Victory and Heart have both joined police in condemning the attack, pledging to help identify the offenders and hit them with five-year bans.

Victoria Police Inspector Paul Ross said officers were reviewing the stadium’s CCTV footage and was confident the offenders will soon be caught.

‘‘We are certainly confident of apprehending the people responsible. The CCTV footage we have got on the whole is pretty good.’’

Inspector Ross said five people had been charged with lighting the flares but police were yet to charge anyone with damaging the seats. He said about 120 chairs were destroyed in the Heart supporter area and 50 from the Victory supporter area.

But although Inspector Ross condemned the unruly behaviour, he was adamant that hooliganism at soccer games in Melbourne was not out of control.

‘‘The troublesome minority behaves a lot worse that what they would at say an AFL game. But I just reiterate that its a very small minority [who misbehave] out of the 41,000 people who were present. We are only really talking about a couple of dozen.’’

Inspector Ross declined to reveal how many police officers were patrolling the stadium on Saturday night but he said the number was adequate.

He said police review officer numbers before each Melbourne game and would be meeting with representatives from the soccer clubs before the next derby.

Melbourne Heart chief executive Scott Munn pledged that the miscreants would be identified and then hit with a five-year ban by the FFA.

Munn said that the club had already received many phone calls from supporters disgusted by the actions of a small minority, with fans identifying those they knew who had taken part in the carnage or offering footage shot on mobile devices at the time of the destruction.

"This is something that we must condemn as a football club. There was significant damage done and we will not tolerate it. We are working with Victoria Police, the FFA, Hatamoto (the security company at the venue employed by FFA ) and Etihad management to identify the perpetrators so we can ensure they are not welcome at our games for a very long time," Munn said on Monday morning.

"We are very confident we will be able to do so. Today we have had people providing us with footage of people carrying out the damage."

Munn said these sort of actions are often, but not wholly perpetrated by teenagers who believe they are aping the actions of "ultra crews" and hard line supporters in South America and parts of Europe.

But in trashing a venue and gaining widespread publicity for all the wrong reasons they not only run the risk of fines and bans themselves, but they damage a sport they purport to love and wish to see grow in popularity.

"They totally misjudge and misrepresent the overwhelming majority of fans, players and people who work in the game. There is no way any of this can be excused. It’s anti-social behaviour," said Munn.

Melbourne Victory’s general manager of operations, Trent Jacobs, echoed Munn when he said there was no place in the game for such stupidity.

However, he pointed out that perspective should be kept given the few numbers of ejections from the ground in such a big crowd.

’’Our club does not condone such anti social behaviour and we will be working with all the relevant authorities to eliminate this sort of behaviour.

’’It's a shame all the publicity has been about this, because the overwhelming majority of the 41,000-plus crowd were very well behaved. There were only 10 fans ejected on the night.’’

Seat damage in the derby fixtures is not a new phenomenon. There were plenty broken the first time the two clubs met at Etihad in round one this season and there was also damage at AAMI Park when Heart hosted Victory shortly before Christmas.

"Football is not a violent or dangerous sport. I travelled to the game on the train and home again and it was a safe environment and I experienced no issues," said Munn.

"But a tiny minority of anti-social fans are giving those who want to criticise and attack the sport all the ammunition they need with these sort of behaviours," Munn said.

Police also arrested several other soccer fans on Saturday night for public order offences that were not related to damaging the seats or lighting flares.

Wigan Athletic - Southampton FC - 02/02/2013

Source : http://www.dailyecho.co.uk

Police are looking through CCTV pictures to identify rival fans who pelted each other with objects as they headed away from Wigan’s DW Stadium on Saturday.

First reports of trouble after the game, which ended in 2-2 draw between the relegation threatened rivals, came from Southampton officers, who routinely travel to away matches with Saints fans as part of Hampshire police’s football unit.

They said that footage was being reviewed in relation to the “poor behaviour” of “a minority” of fans on both sides, who were involved in “disturbances” shortly after the final whistle.

Among those caught up in the incident was a mother from Wigan, who accused Saints fans for sparking the trouble, which has left her three-year-old daughter “too scared” to return to her home side’s stadium. She made the claims on a social networking website.

However, one Southampton fan, who witnessed the trouble, said that both sets of fans were involved in mainly verbal abuse of each other, which was soon forgotten about, with the majority of fans from both sides sharing drinks with each other in the pub afterwards.

Initial reports to police in Wigan shortly after 5pm claimed that up to 500 people were involved in clashes and that objects such as bricks were being lobbed at fans as they left the stadium.

But officers arrived within minutes to find just a core group of between 20 and 30 people causing trouble.

Last night Greater Manchester Police confirmed that investigations were continuing into reports of objects being thrown.

A spokesman added that it was still unclear which fans were to blame but that CCTV images were being looked at to identify the culprits.

Force duty officer Mike Booth, from Greater Manchester Police, said: “There were objects being thrown by fans but there were no reports of any assaults or injuries and nobody was arrested.

“We had numerous calls about the incident but when officers arrived on the scene the group in question dispersed quickly.”

Arrests made following trouble at Crystal Palace v Charlton south London derby

Ten football fans were arrested after trouble broke out during and after Crystal Palace’s game against Charlton on Saturday.

Crystal Palace beat Charlton 2-1 on Saturday at Selhurst Park in a hotly contested south London derby.

Extra police officers were drafted in for the game, some coming from neighbouring boroughs.

During the game, several rows of seats and the toilets in the away end were damaged. Flares were also lit in the away section.

After the match, away fans were held in Park Road by a police cordon while Palace fans made their way home.

About 3,000 Charlton supporters were escorted down Sangley Road towards Norwood Junction.

A minority of troublemakers smashed cars and damaged residents’ property as they made their way home.

Gillingham FC - Wycombe Wanderers - 04/02/2013

Source : http://www.bbc.co.uk

Wycombe goalkeeper Jordan Archer attacked by fan

Wycombe goalkeeper Jordan Archer was attacked by a fan in the closing stages of his side's 1-0 win at Gillingham.

Kent Police confirmed a 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of assault following the incident.

The supporter jumped on top of the 19-year-old, who is on loan from Tottenham, in injury time.

The player did not receive treatment, was not hurt and carried on for the remaining few seconds of the match at Priestfield Stadium.

Kent Police said on Tuesday: "A 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently in custody following an incident in the 93rd minute of the Gillingham v Wycombe match last night."

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth said: "There are silly people sometimes at football grounds.

"They give the rest of the Gillingham fans a bad name.

"I know Jordan, he's a tough lad. I don't want to comment on it too much but everyone's OK."

Gills boss Martin Allen added: "As a football club we can't condone (what happened). None of us are happy with that."

In October, Leeds fan Aaron Cawley was jailed for 16 weeks for attacking Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.
