England : Yeovil Town fan receives 3-year ban after invading pitch - 01/02/2014
Source : http://www.westerngazette.co.uk
POLICE have warned Yeovil Town fans that they risk hefty penalties and a possible jail sentence if they invade the pitch.
The Glovers’ 4-0 win over Russell Slade’s Leyton Orient last month was marred by an invader who ran onto the Huish Park pitch shortly after the final whistle.
Carl Boddington, 19, eluded stewards and ran up to a number of Yeovil Town players as they prepared to leave the pitch, Somerset Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Yeovil, heard last Thursday.
After magistrates handed Boddington a three-year banning football banning order for his “moment of stupidity”, police have warned fans that similar behaviour will not be tolerated at matches.
Ian Hambidge, police football liaison officer at Yeovil Town, said: “To be honest it’s a shame it has had to come to a fan being banned, but this highlights how fans’ actions can have serious consequences.
“We are pleased with the banning order and it will hopefully act as a deterrent to others.
“Allowing people to run onto the field could have a number of serious consequences. The safety of players and officials is paramount.
“The other side of the coin is that when intruders run onto the pitch it often affects crowd dynamics, is difficult to control and can lead to problems between sets of fans.
“It also stops the game and ruins it for everyone else who wants to watch a football match.
“Yeovil Town have a great reputation as a family club across the country, but incidents like this can be very damaging to that image.
“The club needs as many fans as it can to attend and watch the team in the Championship. Unfortunately for this individual, a moment of stupidity means one more empty seat for the foreseeable future.”
Magistrates heard how Boddington, of Church Cottages, Coxley, made a bet with friends “for a laugh and a giggle” to run onto the field of play.
Joanne Pearce, prosecuting, told magistrates: “Following the final whistle at 4.50pm the defendant ran from the terrace onto the playing field towards the centre circle, where he shook hands with a number of Yeovil Town players.
“Stewards ran after him but he made every effort to get away. He was eventually detained.
“When interviewed by police he said he and his friends spoke about running onto the pitch. Unfortunately for the defendant, he was the one who ran on and his friends did not.
“He knows he shouldn’t have done it. It seems this individual and his friends can’t behave when attending such matches.”
Magistrates said Boddington had committed “a stupid act of showing off” and warned that he would pay “an expensive price” for his crime.
Boddington was banned from attending any football ground or any regulated football match in England and Wales for the next three years.
He was also ordered to pay a £75 fine, £85 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Fans in tense face-off before Tyne-Wear derby as furious Newcastle supporter tries to throw season ticket at Pardew
Newcastle and Sunderland fans faced off at Saturday lunchtime as they lined the tension-filled streets ahead of the second North East derby of the season. Police on horseback attempted to keep the supporters apart in a bid to avoid a repeat of last April's Tyne-Wear clash when almost 100 people were arrested.
Some visiting fans did attempt to add a touch of humour to the pre-match hostilities, however, by donning masks in tribute to Bud, the horse who was punched by a Newcastle fan last season. Smoke bombs were let off ahead of the crucial Premier League fixture which Sunderland won in stunning fashion. There were no reports of arrests before kick-off as fans appeared to heed the warnings of their respective managers. Alan Pardew and Gus Poyet both backed a campaign by and appealed for calm from both sets of fans on Saturday.
Police had insisted the 149th derby was moved to a lunchtime kick-off and Newcastle boss Pardew admitted he felt some responsibility after Sunderland’s 3-0 win last April, their first on Tyneside for 13 years. Newcastle suffered a third successive derby defeat for the first time since 1923 and their fans were quick to show their disgust. Two supporters made it on to pitch but were restrained by a steward and dragged off. Two other fans were photographed with a ripped Newcastle shirt but their side remain in eighth place, nine points outside the top four while Sunderland hauled themselves clear of the relegation zone.

Angry scenes flared as Newcastle United fans squared up to police after leaving St James Park following their team's 3-0 defeat
Angry scenes flared as so-called Newcastle United fans squared up to police after leaving St James Park following their team's 3-0 defeat.
A wall of police officers, mounted and on foot, was formed on St James' Boulevard after full time while SAFC fans were kept inside.
But as police attempted to move them back, angry fans squared-up to officers, some with their faces covered by scarves.
There were loud bangs as flares were thrown into the air and towards police, startling the horses.
Police dog handlers put on riot helmets and walked towards them.
The fans were forced back by police before Sunderland fans were escorted out of the ground.
Several Newcastle United fans waited to watch their rivals leave.
The Black Cats supporters taunted them singing loudly. Some beer bottles were thrown.
At around 3.45pm a gang of young fans gathered surged down Pudding Chare, off the Bigg Market. They began emptying a skip and throwing rubbish.
Northumbria Police have since said that they do not believe those involved in the Bigg Market disturbance were at the match or involved in supporting the game in any official way.

Crowd restrictions target rogue elements in Melbourne Victory supporter group - 01/02/2014
Source : http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/
SOCCER fans will be hit with unprecedented match-day restrictions following more trouble across the city.
Melbourne Victory crowds will face the toughest crackdown on spectator behaviour seen in Australian sport for the rest of the A-League season following intervention by the code's governing body to be announced on Sunday.
The changes aimed at rogue fans will see supporter groups subjected to ID checks and bag searches and comes after a banned hooligan tried to enter Etihad Stadium with three flares strapped to his chest.
The crackdown follows repeated trouble last Sunday before the clash with Sydney, when fans marched through the city streets letting off flares.
Football Federation Australia said Victory supporters face restricted access to "active'' areas behind goals until season's end in a bid to eliminate the minority element of trouble makers.
In targeted areas, Victory fans will be forced to show identification to get to their seats and will be banned from entering active areas where fans sing and chant unless they are registered club members.
Additional measures to ensure crowd safety, such as increased bag checks, are also expected to be introduced.
The clampdown will start next week as the next phase of measures introduced by FFA after a CBD brawl between Victory and Wanderers fans on December 28.
It comes as the Sunday Herald Sun reveals a repeat offender faces a lifetime ban from matches Australia-wide after last week being busted by police with flares.
The man, aged in his late 30s, was already banned by FFA from attending matches until 2019. He will face further suspensions and be hauled before the courts.
A 16-year-old child, who was allegedly caught lighting a flare at Southern Cross Station, faces a mandatory five-year ban and will be forced to attend court with his parents.
The same strict rules will apply to Western Sydney Wanderers supporters.
A-League head Damien de Bohun said tackling trouble-making fans was necessary to protect sensible supporters and the image of the sport.
"The trial is squarely aimed at preventing troublemakers using the active areas to engage in anti-social behaviour that affects the enjoyment of others and damages the reputation of the club and game,'' he said.
The changes mean Victory and Wanderers supporters will need membership cards to enter the active zones, can buy only one ticket to the area and cannot exchange their seat with another fan.
Similar measures were trialled for a "high-risk'' match between Victory and Wanderers in Melbourne last month.
Police are reviewing video footage of Victory fans igniting flares at a march in the city and separate footage posted online.
Commander Rick Nugent said more arrests and charges could result from the review.
The new regulations will be put to the test on March 1 when Victory hosts Melbourne Heart in an AAMI Park derby expected to be a sell-out.
Heart supporters will not be subject to the same conditions in their active area.

Italy : 'Ultras' handed jail terms following 2003 fan death - 02/02/2014
Source : http://www.globalpost.com
Eight 'ultra' fans of Serie A club Napoli were handed jail terms ranging from three to nine years in relation to the death of a 19-year-old supporter at a game in 2003, according to reports.
Napoli fan Sergio Ercolano died on September 20, 2003, after falling from a stand at Avellino's Partenio Stadium when he attempted to escape as hordes of Napoli fans moved to attack their rivals.
The eight fans were charged with "rioting and destruction" at the game, known as the 'Campania Derby'. A ninth accused was acquitted.
It was the third stage in a long legal process which has already seen several other fans, around 100 in total, sentenced for their indirect role in the death of Ercolano.

Brazilian Police Filmed Brutally Beating Fan At Football Match
As security remains one of the primary concerns around the Cup, video surfaced this week of Brazilian police brutally beating a fan after a club football match in the state of Goiás. Reports say that fans of Vila Nova and Atlético-GO clashed shortly after the end of the match, and as police subdued the fight, they corralled one fan in a stadium bathroom. A secret recording showed four members of the Military Police repeatedly striking the fan with batons, even as he went to the ground with his hands covering his head.

Brazil: Corinthians' fans attack their own players at training in another Brazilian football shambles as the World Cup looms closer ! - 05/02/2014
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk
Fears about Brazil's credibility to host the 2014 World Cup have risen following violent protests by fans of Brazilian club Corinthians towards their own players in training. A group of about 100 supporters, some armed with sticks and bars, broke into the training ground in Sao Paulo after a 5-1 defeat by Santos. One of the country's biggest clubs, Corinthians are now threatening to strike unless they receive protection from their own supporters as they believe more violence could be imminent unless action is taken.
Peru international Paolo Guerrero was one player to be affected by the thuggery, as he was grabbed around the neck, while some of his teammates had their money and mobile phones stolen. On describing the disturbing scenes a players' statement said: 'We Corinthians players demand that we get security in which to work in peace.

Roma face partial stadium closure after anti-Napoli chants
"Roma will be punished with a fine of 50,000 euros and ordered to play one match with the Curva Sud and Curva Nord without fans, and also ending the suspension of the penalty established on October 21," the league said in a statment on Thursday. A one-game ban was handed out for chants during Roma's 3-2 semi-final first leg win over Napoli on Wednesday, while a further suspension was added following a suspended punishment for similar chants during a league match earlier in the season. Roma fans in both sections of the ground were heard chanting "Vesuvius, wash them (with) fire" towards opposition supporters. The two sections, traditionally home to the club's hardcore "ultra" support, will be closed for Roma's matches with Sampdoria on Feb. 16 and Inter Milan on March 1. Roma were also fined 30,000 euros and Napoli 15,000 euros after their fans threw fireworks at each other. Territorially discriminatory chanting has become a major issue in Italy, where there is a tradition of people in the richer north of the country insulting those from the poorer south.

England: Three Leicester City fans banned from King Power stadium after fireworks were let off in family stand - 07/02/2014
Source : http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk
Leicester City has banned three fans from home matches for the rest of the season after fireworks were set off in the family stand during a game last month.
The trio of supporters were banned from the King Power Stadium after the incident at the game against Middlesborough on January 25.
The club spokesman said: “During the second half of the game, prohibited pyrotechnic items were activated in the family stand, endangering the safety of supporters in the vicinity.
“After a thorough review of in-stadium surveillance and following consultation with Leicestershire Police, the Club has issued bans with immediate effect.”
The bans will run up to the conclusion of the 2013/14 season and will be reviewed before the start of the 2014/15 campaign.
The spokesman said: “The welfare of supporters at King Power Stadium is the club’s highest priority and we will continue to work with Leicestershire police to prevent supporter safety being compromised.
“The club has a zero-tolerance approach to the use of flares, smoke bombs and pyrotechnics of any kind and will impose bans in any future incidents of this nature.”
Earlier this season, a 23-year-old man was issued with a three-year football banning order after admitting in court to throwing a smoke grenade at or towards the playing area at King Power Stadium during the home game against Leeds United in August.
The banning order prevents him from going to Premier League, Football League or international matches for three years and will have to surrender his passport before England matches played abroad during that time.

England: Port Vale fan jailed and banned after walking over a police car after Wolves clash - 08/02/2014
Source : http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk
FOOTBALL yob Antony Clewlow has been jailed and banned from Port Vale’s stadium for six years after trampling over a police car and hurling abuse.
The 35-year-old was arrested after he was caught on camera swearing and stirring up trouble after an infamous match between Port Vale and Wolves last summer.
CCTV footage also captured him attempting to drag another man away from officers trying to arrest him, kicking out at a police dog and walking over a police car, waving to fans from the roof.
Now Clewclow, of Church Street, Rookery, has been jailed for 10 weeks after he admitted using threatening, abusive, insulting words and behaviour, with intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence.
He has also been hit with a six-year football banning order, preventing him attending games over that time.
North Staffordshire Justice Centre yesterday heard how Clewlow gave himself up to police after his photograph was featured in The Sentinel following the disgraceful events of last August, when fans clashed with police after the match.
Staffordshire Police were also heavily criticised for the way they dealt with the fracas, and have since apologised.
Revealing the CCTV footage in court, prosecutor Andrew Bodger said: “The defendant grabbed a man who was being detained, pulling him away from officers. He kicked out at a police dog, but it’s difficult to see if any kicks actually landed.
“He then continued trying to pull the other man away, then the defendant fell back in the crowd.
“The defendant was then seen walking with the crowd, occasionally turning and shouting and gesticulating.
“He then got up on a car, a Vauxhall Astra police car and was stood there with his arms in the air, while the crowd cheered him. He was stirring up the crowd.
“He was then seen making a ‘V’ sign to the camera.
The court hear Clewlow, a plasterer by trade, had became angry after a 14-year-old boy was knocked to the floor, he claimed, by police. He said his behaviour following that incident was, ‘stupid’.
Mitigating, Andrew Bennett said: “At the start, there was a young teenage boy who was knocked over in the chaos that followed. It is true he does blame the police to some extent. It was partly the fault of police that lad was knocked over.
“It is not just him that has complained about the policing at that match.
“There has been a lot of criticism of police in the local debate that followed the game and the Chief Constable has apologised.”
District Judge David Taylor told Clewclow: “I’m satisfied this is not a one-off incident of stupidity, this was prolonged.
“You walked over a police car, waving your arms at the crowd. You gave the ‘V’ sign to the camera.
“ It was an obviously volatile crowd and your actions must have posed a very real risk of that exploding into something more serious.”

Birmingham City - Derby County - 08/02/2014
Source : http://www.birminghammail.co.uk
Fans' protest did not affect Birmingham City's on-field performance, says Lee Clark
Lee Clark said that Birmingham City supporters’ protest didn’t alter his or his team’s focus in the match against Derby County on Saturday.
Two banners appeared at St Andrew’s , demanding that Carson Yeung sells the club.
It was, for the first time, a coherent remonstration against the Yeung regime at the ground.
The first banner was unfurled early into the 3-3 draw against Derby County.
It bore the legend ‘Delay No More’.
On the half-hour mark, another came. It had pictures of Yeung and Peter Pannu on it with the words: ‘Made in Birmingham - Destroyed in Hong Kong’.
It was carried round from the Tilton Road End into the Kop stand.
At the time it reached the front of the directors’ box, Blues conceded a penalty, which was saved by Darren Randolph.
That stop and the banner’s continued progress around the ground in the Kop brought a roar and seemed to galvanise the crowd.
“I don’t get involved in all that (off-field controversy), I am just focused on the game,” said Clark. “The game is about winning.
“All I know is that when the players need support they are getting it in abundance.
“Whatever else is happening around the stadium is not my concern.
“My job is to try and deliver a group of players who make the supporters feel that they’ve got value for money when they come through the turnstiles - and I think Saturday we did that.”
The usual ‘We Don’t Care About Carson’ song was aired by disgruntled fans, it was often repeated and louder than normal.
And there were other anti-board chants throughout the match.

Three arrests after South Wales derby but police praise fans' behaviour
Police say three people were arrested at the South Wales Derby yesterday.
But officers praised the behaviour of the 20,402 people, including 1,640 away fans.
Match commander Superintendent Phil Davies said: “Once again Swansea and Cardiff supporters have created a great atmosphere and enjoyed a trouble-free occasion at the Liberty Stadium.
"There were three arrests of individuals who clearly had too much to drink and they will now face the consequences of their actions."
Earlier in the week police had asked fans to create a positive image to the millions of viewers watching around the world.
"I am pleased with the way we have worked in partnership with both clubs in preparation for this game and just like at the reverse fixture in Cardiff, a positive impression has been left with the millions of people who watched this game across the world."
All three of those who were arrested at the stadium were from Rhondda.
A 47-year-old man was arrested for being drunk and disorderly in a public place having been refused entry to the stadium for being intoxicated.
A 55-year-old man was arrested for a public order offence on arrival at the stadium.
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault within the stadium concourse.
All three were taken into custody at Swansea Central Police Station.
Due to the closure of the M4 at Briton Ferry following an overturned lorry, police used an alternative route to escort Cardiff supporters home.
