Greek Football Club Will Pay €20,000 to Police Injured by Fans - 02/02/2018
Source: http://greece.greekreporter.com/
PAOK Thessaloniki was ordered to pay €20,000 ($25,000) in damages to two policemen injured during clashes between football fans and police two years ago.
It is the first time in Greek soccer history a club was ordered to pay compensation to policemen who often find themselves embroiled in violent attacks in football grounds.
The damages were awarded to two policemen who were seriously injured during a cup game between PAOK and Olympiacos in March 2016.
Scores of fans ran onto the pitch and attacked police after PAOK was denied a late penalty. The match was called off and PAOK was later punished by the Greek Football Association.
One suffered a fractured leg and the other extensive burns from petrol bomb thrown by PAOK fans.
“This is the first time that police officers are awarded compensation for disturbances made on a football field,” police lawyer Thanos Charistos told Voria.gr, adding that the necessary security measures were not followed by the club.
“Security guards failed to spot dangerous items brought into the ground,” he said.
President of the Union of Police Officers of Thessaloniki, Thodoris Tsairidis, told Voria.gr that “this is a landmark decision. The court recognized that police officers are not punch bags”.

Uruguay : Nacional apologise for football fans who mocked Chapecoense crash - 03/02/2018
Source: stuff.co.nz
Uruguayan club Nacional have apologised after some of their fans made mocking airplane gestures in Wednesday's Copa Libertadores clash against Chapecoense, whose players were involved in a devastating aircraft crash in 2016.
"Unfortunately lots of sick minds channel their irrationality into sporting events," Nacional said as they expressed their "profound shame".
The Montevideo club said in an open letter they were taking action to identify and ban the culprits who travelled to Brazil for the tie.
Conmebol, South American football's governing body, said their disciplinary committee had opened an inquiry into the incidents, which took place during Nacional's 1-0 win. It gave the Uruguayan club until February 8 to present their defence.
Chapecoense were travelling to the final of the Copa Sudamericana to play Colombian side Atletico Nacional in November, 2016 when the plane carrying their team crashed into a mountainside outside Medellin.
Some 71 of the 77 people on board, including all but three of the Chapecoense squad, died in the crash.
The small club from southern Brazil rebuilt last year and managed to reach the qualifying rounds of the Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the Champions League.

Three West Ham supporters were arrested after fans fought with stewards during their 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday.
Tensions flared in the London Stadium concourse at half-time with fans being ejected from the ground, and a pint of beer was also thrown into a steward's face.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Saturday night that three men were in custody at an east London police station having been arrested on suspicion of assault against two stewards.
