Santiago Wanderers fans beat up riot police during the match with Universidad de Chile last weekend
The sight of rioting fans getting into clashes with armed police in South American football matches isn’t a new phenomenon by any means, however the scenes at the big match in Chile’s top flight last weekend were definitely out of the ordinary.
Round six of the season saw Santiago Wanderers claim a 2-1 win over local powerhouse Universidad de Chile, but a large section of the home fans missed the action on the field as they battled with riot police in the stands.
With the Wanderers fans causing trouble, a band of around 10 riot police, armed with shields and batons, were deployed to try and contain the crowd but their efforts failed badly.
Outnumbered by the massive crowd of home supporters, the Wanderers fans gained confidence through their numbers, and it wasn’t log before the gang of supporters began attacking retreating policemen in a chaotic incident.

Greece : Police sue coast guard officers over hooligan attack at Piraeus Port - 13/02/2014
Source : http://www.ekathimerini.com
Nine riot police officers have sued coast guard officers assigned at Piraeus Port earlier this week after suffering injuries in an attack in the early hours of Tuesday by a gang of hooligans who thought they were fans of a rival team.
The Greek Police said that a squad of 28 riot officers were returning to Athens from Crete, where they had been dispatched to guard the Greek Basketball Cup final on Sunday night between Athens's Panathinaikos and Thessaloniki club Aris. They were not in uniform as they were off duty. When disembarking at Piraeus in the early hours of Tuesday, the riot officers said they were attacked by a group of some 80 to 100 hooligans believed to belong to Piraeus club Olympiakos, which has a long-standing rivalry with Panathinaikos.
Investigators believe that the gang of hooligans had mistaken the officers for Panathinaikos fans returning from the game.
Clashes between fans of the two teams are frequent and have led to casualties.
Nine officers were injured in the attack, in which the assailants used wooden clubs, screwdrivers and other makeshift weapons. They said that coast guard officers on the scene did nothing to thwart the assault and had failed to inform police that the hooligans were gathered at the port.
The Coast Guard, meanwhile responded to the accusations by saying that the Greek Police had not informed it that a squad of riot officers was arriving on the morning ferry from Crete.
No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Spain : Atletico Madrid fined €600 after Ronaldo hit by lighter - 14/02/2014
Source : http://www.goal.com
The capital club have been sanctioned for "reprehensible behaviour" after the Portuguese was struck with a missile thrown from the crowd after the first half of Tuesday's game
Atletico Madrid have been fined €600 (£500) by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) after one of their fans threw a cigarette lighter at Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese was leaving the pitch after scoring both goals in a 2-0 Copa del Rey derby win for Real Madrid over their city rivals on Tuesday, which booked his side's place in the final of the competition.
He was pelted by missiles as made his way to the tunnel at half-time and was struck on the head with the lighter when talking to team-mate Sergio Ramos.
Both Iker Casillas and Atletico spokesman Clemente Villaverde were quick to condemn those responsible for their actions and the club have now been slapped with a fine plus a warning over further incidents.
"It's reprehensible behaviour on the part of the spectator," the RFEF's judge said.

Villareal - Celta Vigo - 15/02/2014
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk
Villarreal's game with Celta Vigo suspended as tear gas is thrown on to El Madrigal pitch
Villarreal's La Liga match at home to Celta Vigo was halted shortly before the final whistle and delayed by about half an hour after what appeared to be a tear gas canister was thrown on to the pitch on Saturday. Celta were leading 1-0 at the Madrigal and there were about three minutes left when the canister, which local media said contained tear gas, landed near the visitors' goal and began spewing out a thick cloud of white smoke. Both sets of players, some of whom were clearly suffering from the effects of the gas, retreated inside the stadium and fans quickly left the ground, with many covering their mouths and noses and in obvious distress. Celta goalkeeper Yoel Rodriguez was seen running away from the smoke rubbing his eyes. The visitors were leading 1-0 when the game was interrupted after Fabian Orellana's score in the The game was restarted and Celta's Manuel Agudo scored off a free kick in the 90th minute to give the visitors a 2-0 victory. Villarreal president Fernando Roig said police are looking for the person who threw the bomb. He said the device had released tear gas and was similar to ones used by police. 'Villarreal condemns and laments what has happened,' Roig said. 'This type of act in no way represents our fan base, which is calm and controlled. I am convinced that this was done by someone who came from outside to hurt Villarreal.' Villarreal midfielder Bruno Soriano added, 'These things can't happen in our house. I hope the person is found.' Celta coach and former Barcelona player Luis Enrique said he had never experienced anything like it in a game before. 'Everyone thought it was a flare, but when we saw (goalkeeper) Yoel (Rodriguez's) eyes, which were bright red, we immediately realized that it was something more dangerous,' he said. 'This should never have happened.'

Scotland : Aberdeen fan jailed for 10 months for hurling sectarian abuse about Neil Lennon on way to match at Fir Park - 16/02/2014
Source : http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk
JAMES BEATTIE, 29, claimed he shouted the comments after he was taunted by Celtic fans as he walked towards Fir Park last August.
AN Aberdeen fan who shouted sectarian abuse about Celtic manager Neil Lennon has been jailed for 10 months.
James Beattie, 29, was on his way to watch the Dons play Motherwell at Fir Park when he launched the tirade in the street.
He claimed he made the comments after he was taunted by Celtic fans as he walked towards the Lanarkshire ground.
He hit back by branding Lennon a “f***** b******, which was overheard by police.
Beattie, from Markinch, Fife, admitted shouting abusive, sectarian and threatening remarks last August.
He also admitted threatening behaviour at Motherwell police station.
At Hamilton Sheriff Court last week, Sheriff Vincent Smith handed Beattie a three-year football banning order in addition to the jail term.
This month, Lennon was attacked by Aberdeen fans at Tynecastle in Edinburgh while watching the Dons’ League Cup tie against St Johnstone.
He was spat on and coins and a bottle thrown at him.
Beattie is the seventh opposition fan to be sent to prison in recent years for abusing Lennon.
Hearts supporter John Wilson, 26, was cleared of a pitchside assault on Lennon during a game between Hearts and Celtic in May 2011.
But at Edinburgh Sheriff Court later that year, he was jailed for eight months for a breach of the peace at the same match and handed a five-year football banning order.
In 2012, two men were jailed after parcels were posted to Lennon and two other high-profile Celtic fans the previous year after a confrontation between the Celtic manager and Rangers boss Ally McCoist during a bad-tempered Old Firm game.
Trevor Muirhead, 44, and Neil McKenzie, 43, were found guilty of conspiracy to assault Lennon, former MSP Trish Godman and the late lawyer Paul McBride QC. Muirhead and McKenzie were each jailed for five years. After the incident at Tynecastle this month, Lennon angrily dismissed claims he brings abuse on himself.
He said: “I am no more confrontational than any other manager in the SPFL.
“However, when it’s an issue regarding me, it seems to be imbalanced.
“I can handle myself but I’m not a street fighter. I live my life as quietly as I can away from football but I’m in the public eye.
“It’s hard to undo that but I’ve been staying away from flashpoints and controversy.”
