4 of 8 arrested Serbian fans are banned from Italy for 5 years under plea bargain - 03/02/2011

Source : The Associated Press (CP)

Four of the eight Serbian fans arrested for violence during a European Championship qualifier have made a plea bargain whereby they will be released from jail but banned from Italy for five years.

The ANSA news agency says the four other fans, including alleged ringleader Ivan Bogdanov, face a trial next month.

UEFA awarded Italy a 3-0 win over Serbia after the match in October was stopped in the seventh minute with the score at 0-0 after Serbia supporters threw flares and fireworks onto the field, burned an Albanian flag and broke barriers, then clashed with police outside the stadium.

UEFA also ordered Serbia to play its home match against Northern Ireland on March 25 in an empty stadium.

Greece: Culture minister promises help to theater targeted by football hooligans - 05/02/2011

Source : http://www.phantis.com/news/culture-minister-promises-help-theater-targeted-football-hooligans

Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Geroulanos on Saturday promised to pick up the tab for damages inflicted on Friday night to the Karolos Koun Art Theatre, which became the hapless target of an unprecedented attack by football hooligans on the first night of a play entitled 'Traveling with PAOK, Stories of Larissis Station'.

The reference to a northern Greek football team in the play's title was enough to attract the attention of some 25 rival team supporters, who descended on unwitting theater goers in Athens' Plaka district armed with iron bars and petrol bombs, shouting Olympiakos football chants, and started to work mayhem.

The culprits, who arrived some 40 minutes before the play was due to begin, broke into the theater and set fire to the stage and props, while one by-stander was robbed - possibly, according to police, because he was a PAOK supporter. Police were called in but arrived too late to stop the damage or even catch those responsible.

In a call to the theater director early on Saturday, Geroulanos promised that the culture ministry will cover the cost of all damages to the theater and stressed that there was no room for violence in culture. He also promised to come and see the play as soon as he returns from a trip to Israel.

"The theater is not a football stadium," he underlined and promised that the state will make every effort to isolate incidents of violence of this kind.

The Saturday night performance, meanwhile, will be attended by the general secretary for sports Panos Bitsaksis.

Tunisia: The ultras of Club Africain and ESS Tunis demonstrate against prohibited - 01/02/2011

Source: tunisian press

TUNIS-Dozens of supporters of the two major rival football clubs of Tunis, Club Africain and Esperance Sportive de Tunis, demonstrated Tuesday together, to demand the lifting of restrictions imposed in stadiums by the regime of ousted president Ben Ali.

The dozens of "ultras" of the two clubs, who are accustomed to strong shocks around the stadiums, were singing at a few meters from each other in a friendly atmosphere, on Habib Bourguiba Avenue, where demonstrators marched daily demanding the resignation of the transitional government.

But their demands were non-political "Ultra, liberta," chanted on the forecourt of a shopping center Supporters of Club Africa. "We want an end to sanctions," responded in echo those of Esperance.

Both groups require the lifting of the ban on the deployment of smoke and giant sheets in stadiums, and the release of their comrades accused of abuse by the justice, following meetings that have degenerated into clashes.

The regime of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali ousted Jan. 14 by the "jasmine revolution" had taken these measures to avoid violence in the stadiums: the smoke from the galleries are sometimes thrown on players from the opposing team or their supporters, and banners often included comments deemed defamatory or indecent.

Tunisia, like its neighbor Algeria, and many European countries, is experiencing regular episodes of hooliganism and violence in and around stadiums.
All competitions are suspended in the country.

Jail terms for Owls hooligans - 06/02/2011

Source : http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/local/jail_terms_for_owls_hooligans_1_3048275

FIVE Sheffield Wednesday thugs who went on the rampage in London’s West End have been jailed for their parts in the “serious and unpleasant eruption of violence”.

Frightened tourists ran for cover as the Owls fans fought with a group of Londoners in the middle of Leicester Square last April.

The Wednesday supporters were visiting the capital for a match against Queens Park Rangers, but became embroiled in a fight with men watching Chelsea’s match against Manchester United on a big screen.

CCTV footage from Yates’ Wine Lodge and The Moon Under Water pub, as well as local authority cameras, showed the two groups making provocative gestures and punching and kicking each other, while cameras also captured fans throwing objects including a concrete post.

The fighting spilled out into the square, with the hooligans throwing metal chairs and glasses at each other.

Owls fans Jonathan Fisher, 25, of Middle Lane, Malin Bridge, Adam Marshall, 19, of Ranworth Road, Bramley, Kevin Morris, 47, of Springwater Avenue, Hackenthorpe and Matthew Schofield, 22, of Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, were each sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment.

Another Wednesday supporter, Martin Broadley, 23, of Deerlands Avenue, Parson Cross, was jailed for three months.

The seven Londoners, believed to be Chelsea supporters from the south-west of the city and Surrey, were handed sentences ranging from seven months in jail to community service.

David Durose, prosecuting, said: “The violence may well have been instigated by the Sheffield group, but at the very least the London group had ample opportunity to withdraw from the incident. But instead they reacted with their own unlawful violence.”

In a police interview, Londoner Matthew Ayley, 24, described the fight as “like something out of The Football Factory” – the hit 2004 film about Chelsea hooligans.

Mr Durose added: “The outside area of the bar was fairly full and most of the customers were oblivious to the situation until missiles began flying.”

Sentencing, Judge Deborah Taylor said: ‘This was a serious and unpleasant eruption of violence. The bar was full of families with young children, who were clearly frightened.

“No-one was seriously hurt, but that was down to chance rather than design.”

The thugs all admitted violent disorder or affray. Fisher, Marshall, Morris and Schofield are subject to orders banning them from football matches in England and Wales.
Il n’y a pas eu d’interpellations mais les dégâts matériels sont importants. On ignore encore le montant.

Hooligans jailed after fans battle in West End - 05/02/2011

Source : http://www.croydonguardian.co.uk/news/localnews/8835515.Hooligans_jailed_after_fans_battle_in_West_End/?action=complain&cid=9126720

Fourteen football hooligans have been jailed following an alcohol-fuelled brawl in London’s West End.

Southwark Crown Court heard that two groups of fans hurled glasses, chairs and a concrete post at each other as terrified bystanders ran for cover.

Hundreds of people witnessed the clash which took place on a busy Saturday afternoon in Leicester Square on April 3 last year.

The first group, largely from south London, had been watching the midday match between Chelsea and Manchester United in a pub, and headed to Yates’ Wine Bar in the square.

The second group, from Sheffield and all subject to Football Banning Orders, had travelled to London for the QPR versus Sheffield Wednesday game, which kicked off at 3pm.

They began drinking early in the day and by 4pm had arrived at the The Moon Under Water bar, a short distance from Yates’.

Within 15 minutes the missile-throwing chaos had begun as hundreds of frightened people ran for cover.

Judge Taylor, sitting at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, described the incident as a “serious and unpleasant eruption of violence”.

She said: “This eruption took place in a busy wine bar in a tourist area of London, full of frightened families and young children.

“Bottles and a number of missiles were thrown, including glasses and heavy weights, followed by punching and kicking.”

Lee Merrett, 24, from Sutton, Brian Johnson, 24, from Epsom, and Ben and Jack Quinton, aged 22 and 25, both from Worcester Park, each received seven-month sentences for their role in the fight.

Frankie Sims, from Sutton, Matthew Ayley, from Carshalton, and Andrew Cocks, from South Croydon, all 24, will serve three, five and six months respectively.

Jamie Gough, 25, from Horley in Sussex, will also be imprisoned for seven months.

Only one defendant, Josh Mackley, 24, from Carshalton, escaped jail but he was handed a four-month sentence, suspended for 12 months, and must complete 240 hours of unpaid work.

The judge said the Sheffield group had started the missile-throwing but the London group had escalated the situation.

During the melee, Jack Quinton twice launched a concrete post at the rival group and Andrew Cocks pelted them with bottles and glasses.

The two groups then converged for several minutes, throwing punches and kicks, before they all scattered as police arrived.

All of the London group were arrested nearby but the Sheffield men were identified on CCTV by a specialist police anti-hooliganism unit months afterwards.

Judge Taylor said: “The first wave of missiles came from the Sheffield group but the London made no attempt to move away.

“That no one was seriously hurt was down to chance rather than design.

“This offence undoubtedly passes the custody threshold.”

The five other men, who formed the Sheffield group, were also jailed at Friday’s sentencing.

Jonathan Fisher, 25, Kevin Morris, 47, and Mathew Schofield, 22, were locked up for eight months each.

Martin Broadley, 22, was handed a three-month term while Adam Marshall, 19, must spend eight months in a young offender’s institute.

Sims, Mackley and Broadley pleaded guilty to affray, the other eleven defendants admitted violent disorder.

Swansea City - Cardiff City - 06/02/2011

Source : Thisissouthwales.co.uk

Ugly scenes as football fans clash with police during Swansea-Cardiff City derby

ANGRY football fans clashed with police inside The Liberty Stadium during a tempestuous Swans Cardiff derby.

A number of supporters in the Eastern section of the ground had to be held back by officers during ugly scenes, which also saw a youngster from Swansea in tears after being hit by a projectile from the away end.

But despite the flash-point following the final whistle, South Wales Police said the game, which Cardiff won 1-0, passed off without major incident.

They made only six arrests for public order offences.

Among those who were detained was one Swansea supporter who ran onto the pitch in injury time, who could now face a football banning order.

Similar to this season's contest at Cardiff, which resulted in five arrests, all away supporters travelled down the M4 on coaches. Police call it a "bubble match", meaning all away fans must travel on official transport. They were then ferried into the ground more than an hour before kick-off.

Officers had been drafted in from other forces across Wales, and British Transport Police, and there were also dog sections and a crew in a police helicopter.

The strong presence was also boosted by the use of a new metal cordon — around 100ft in length and 12ft in height — which ensured the 35 coaches holding away fans were protected while they left the ground.

The game, which saw the home side defeated by a goal to nil, largely passed by without incident.

Following the final whistle — and provocation from Cardiff fans — a number of people in the east stand tried to cross a barrier which kept the two groups apart. However, officers managed to keep the supporters separated — and avoided a mass riot.

By this time, a number of Swans fans had already left the stadium — with the gates of the Liberty Stadium opened around 10 minutes from the end.

Come 3.30pm, the streets were awash with dejected Swans fans making their way home in the rain.

Greg Jenkins, 32, of Pontlliw, said: "We just didn't seem to have any end product — and Craig Moore was a let-down.

"I've seen practically all the Swans Cardiff derbies since 16, and this has got to be the most disappointing of them all."

Police send warning letters to suspected hooligans ahead of United v City derby - 07/02/2011

Source : Menmedia.co.uk

Police have sent personal letters to 40 suspected football hooligans ahead of the Manchester derby.

The letters warn them they are being watched, and will be prosecuted if they are caught causing trouble.

More than 100 thugs – 76 United fans and 48 City – have already been banned from the vital Old Trafford clash.

The letter campaign was the idea of Chief Supt Mark Roberts. He said: “Some will see it as a badge of honour, some will just screw it up and put it in the bin, but for others, it will have the desired effect.”

It is the first time police have written to suspected hooligans in this way. Video evidence has helped officers build profiles on yobs associated with the two clubs.

Three hundred police, including dog handlers, mounted officers and video intelligence--gathering teams will be on duty, with pictures flashed back to HQ for assessment.

And Chf Supt Roberts warned yobs could find police waiting outside their homes ready to arrest them when they get back from Saturday’s match – the 157th derby.

He said: “The vast majority of fans will come to the game hoping to enjoy themselves and enjoy a great game of football and we will being doing our level best to ensure that will be the case. We do not want the atmosphere ruined by the minority.”

In one letter, Chf Supt Roberts writes: “I am aware that you continue to associate with individuals at football matches who I believe seek to cause disorder.

“You are obviously aware of the dangers of engaging in this activity as you yourself had to dial 999 to seek police assistance having been chased at Bolton. “As such you will be aware of the unpleasant and cowardly nature of football related disorder.”

Officers delivered another of the police chief's letters to the home of a man with a double life.

The businessman dresses in a smart suit and drives an executive car. But for Reds matches he changes into all-black clothing to be part of United's 'Men in Black' gang who are constantly under police surveillance following violent clashes with fans from other clubs.

The Chf Supt's letter says: “I would ask you to reflect on the potential consequences of continuing to associate with such individuals who, together with yourself, will be closely monitored by the police at football matches.”

Police will meet club officials ahead of the game and will ask them to pass on to the players the need for them to act responsibly.

Tolina (ColombiA) - Corinthians (Brazil) - Copa Libertadores - 03/02/2011

Source : ITN

Fans smash players' cars

Corinthians fans, disgusted by the team's preliminary round exit in the Libertadores Cup, have painted insulting slogans on the club's walls.

The graffiti is mainly aimed at captain Ronaldo but fans have also thrown stones at players' cars, smashing windows.

As the team returned from Wednesday's 2-0 defeat by Deportes Tolima in Colombia, angry fans turned up at Sao Paulo airport to protest against the players who boarded a bus directly from their plane and left under police escort.

The Colombia match was the second leg of their tie - they drew the first 0-0 at home.

It is the first time a Brazilian team has failed to qualify from the preliminary round.

Fans painted graffiti on the walls of the club's headquarters, calling former Brazil striker Ronaldo, who is in the last season of his career, a "shameless fatty."

The only one of Sao Paulo's big clubs never to have won the Libertadores Cup, South America's elite club competition, Corinthians had already disappointed their fans in their centenary year in 2010. They were eliminated by fellow Brazilian side Flamengo in the quarter-finals having signed Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos for a shot at the title.

The tension at Corinthians is unlikely to abate with the derby against arch-rivals Palmeiras in the Paulista (Sao Paulo) state championship this weekend.
