Hooligans admit violent disorder at Bluebirds' FA Cup clash - 10/02/2011
Source : Walesonline.co.uk
TWO football hooligans have been jailed for their part in violent clashes following last season’s FA Cup game between Cardiff and Chelsea.
Stefan Lewis-Davies, 24, of North Rising, Pontlottyn, and Peter Corkrey, 27, of St John’s Lane, Nelson, both admitted violent disorder and were locked up for 16 months. The men were also handed a six-year banning order.
Financial advisor Lewis-Davies and ex-Royal Navy man Corkrey were among six Cardiff City hooligans jailed on Thursday (February 3) after becoming involved in a mass brawl that terrified innocent bystanders following the match at Stamford Bridge.
Five others who admitted offences relating to the fight on London’s Kings Road avoided jail but were ordered to carry out community-based sentences.
The defendants are the first to be sentenced out of a total of 95 suspects who will face charges at West London’s Isleworth Crown Court.
The court heard police categorised the game as C-plus, the highest category for potential violence, and 6,000 Cardiff City fans arrived for the noon kick-off, which was the first time the teams had played each other in 18 years.
Prosecutor Howard Tobias said: “The reputation of the fans and the two clubs alerted police to the high probability of spontaneous and pre-planned disorder. It was believed violence would occur.”
Mr Tobias said a young mother driving along Kings Road with her nine-month old baby was caught amid the clashes between violent fans and she had to make a sudden U-turn.
Another woman who was seven months pregnant also told police she feared for her life and the life of her unborn child as the mob descended on her Porsche.
She was pulled from the car by three other people as it was bumped into by fighting fans.
“She thought her life and the life of her unborn child was in danger,” Mr Tobias said.
Judge Martin Edmunds QC said: “Members of the public were put in fear including a pregnant woman, who, in her words, ‘felt overwhelmed and excessively scared’.”
A police officer’s jaw was broken in the disorder, although no members of the public were injured. Videos of the brawl have emerged which show the road brought to a standstill as more than 200 fans from both teams wreaked havoc while bystanders shopped on a sunny afternoon.
Bricks and other missiles were hurled around as the men clashed with each other and police officers, some of which were on horseback.
The culprits were snared after a joint operation between the Metropolitan and South Wales Police forces – codenamed Turnhill – when officers mingled with the crowds to spot known troublemakers.
All the defendants were caught on either local authority CCTV or images filmed by Football Intelligence Officers charging towards police lines and Chelsea fans or shouting and gesticulating angrily.
Three more South Wales football hooligans involved in the violence were jailed the following day at the West London court.

Mounted police were forced to enter a football pitch when trouble flared among fans.
Three people were arrested after disorder erupted at the match between Cumnock Juniors and Auchinleck Talbot at Townhead Park, in Cumnock in East Ayrshire.
Police intervened at around 3pm on Saturday when rival fans threw missiles at one corner of the ground during half time.
The game was stopped 10 minutes ahead of full time because of supporters encroaching on the pitch, Strathclyde Police said.
Four officers entered the pitch on horseback to regain order and were forced to intervene again later as fans headed into the town centre.
A police statement said: "Officers made the decision at full time to hold the Auchinleck support in the stadium for approximately 5-10 minutes while the Cumnock fans left the stadium, and Strathclyde Police apologises if any genuine fans were affected.
"This was purely for the safety and well-being of everyone in attendance, which is thought to be around 2,000."
The three arrests related to breach of the peace, street drinking and drugs possession.

Sampdoria football fans 'trash TV studio, attack journos' - 04/02/2011
Source : news.com.au
ITALIAN football supporters, unhappy at the reporting of their team, destroyed a television studio and attacked three journalists, Italian news website TGCom reports.
A dozen fans of the Serie A club Sampdoria reportedly stormed the Sampdoria Telenordia station shortly after 11pm local time and smashed up studio lights and two cameras before assaulting an anchor and two pundits over the broadcast of "Forever Samp".
Anchor Paola Balsomini and reporters Matteo Gerboni and Stefano Zaino were punched and kicked in the raid.
The gang was furious that comments made by supporters at crisis meetings were made public on the channel - including an appeal to the club's president, Riccardo Garrone, to resign over the sale of star players.
Two men were detained after three police cars were sent to quell the violence.

Police warn Newport County fans heading to Mansfield - 12/02/2011
Police have warned Newport County fans heading to Saturday's match at Mansfield to behave or risk being arrested.
The corresponding Blue Square Premier fixture last September led to what police called a "violent confrontation between rival fans".
Eleven men were charged with violent disorder and are set to appear before magistrates this month.
Newport fans without a ticket for the evening game will be turned away.
The match was made all-ticket for away fans and kicks off at 1915 GMT for satellite TV coverage.
Nottinghamshire Police said they had been "working closely" with Mansfield Town and Gwent Police to avoid any trouble at the Blue Square Bet Premier match.
Supt Mark Pollock, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "All travelling away fans must have a ticket to attend the game, and anyone who arrives at the stadium without a ticket and under the influence of alcohol, will be assumed to be there to cause trouble and may be directed to leave the area.
"Anyone who fails to comply with that direction risks arrest.
"Anyone who seeks to cause trouble will be arrested and, should they subsequently be convicted, we will apply for an order to ban them from every football ground in the country."

Scotland: Junior football match descends into chaos after thug bottles fan - 13/02/2011
Source : Sunday Mail (thanks to the sender)
A THUG assaulted a rival fan with a Buckfast bottle during a junior football match.
It came as a local derby descended into violence yesterday as supporters fought on the pitch. Women and children as young as 12 were seen wading in to the battle.
Police had earlier intervened when missles were thrown in a section of the 2000-strong crowd at half time.
One witness said: "I've never seen anything like this at a football match. Those involved are mindless scum.
"The ref just wanted to get the game over and players back in the dressing room. He didn't play the full 90 minutes. No one can blame him.
"The trouble happened down in one corner of the ground and then spread on to the pitch.
"Men, women and children from both sides were attacking each other and there were bottles flying.
"Police had to radio for back-up as there were just too many people on the pitch for them to handle.
"The fans involved don't go to the games every week, they only ever turn up for the derby matches and are determined to cause trouble."
The disgraceful scenes unfolded 10 minutes from the end of Scottish Junior Cup fourth round match between Ayrshire sides Cumnock Juniors and Auchinleck Talbot at Cumnock's Townhead Park. Players and coaching stafftried to help police restrain the thugs but mounted officers had to be drafted in.
The match was halted for 10 minutes while officers regained control and fans said the ref only played about eight minu
tes after the game finally restarted. Auchinleck won 3-0.
At full-time, police escorted both sets of fans out of the ground but violence erupted again in Cumnock town centre. Despite the trouble, Strathclyde Police said there had only been three arrests, none of them directly related to the violence.
A spokeswoman said: "They were for breach of the peace, street drinking and drugs possession."
She added an increased police presence was at the match due to "historical issues" with fans.
Cumnock and Auchinleck are less than two miles apart and have one of the fiercest rivalries in junior football.

DETECTIVES are trawling through CCTV footage of football hooligans involved in violent clashes after Sheffield United played Millwall.
Rival fans clashed in Sheffield after the final whistle on Saturday in what South Yorkshire Police described as “a determined effort to fight”.
Around 100 fans were involved in violence outside Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium and St Mary’s Gate after the 1-1 draw.
Officers said there were four “flashpoints” where fans managed to get past police officers and fight.
Police arrested one United fan for breaching a football banning order, a Millwall fan on suspicion of violent disorder and two for being drunk.
Supt Rachel Barber, in charge of policing the match, said officers had been prepared for possible trouble.
But she said: “They were determined to get together and fight and as a result we had a few pockets of disorder outside the ground.
“We suspected it might happen so plans were in place to prevent it.
“We managed to thwart their attempts in the main but because of the determination of those involved they came together in three or four places.
“This kind of incident is extremely rare in Sheffield.”

TFF details scourge of Turkish sports hooliganism with report - 13/02/2011
Source : Hurriyetdailynews.com
Some 3,700 hooligans are responsible for disturbing the peace at sporting matches around Turkey, according to a recent report from the Turkey Football Federation, or TFF.
Surprisingly, many of those involved in violence and unruly behavior either work as civil servants or have university degrees, said the TFF report, which has been presented to Parliament’s Violence in Sports Research Commission.
The report tracked hooligan-related incidents from 2004 to 2009 across a wide range of sports; in the first year of the study, a total of 297 hooligans were reported. By 2007, however, it was reported that 1,580 hooligans had caused problems in the stands. There was a decline in 2008 with only 930 fans reported to have caused trouble but the number skyrocketed again in 2009 to 3,752.
Some 90 percent of the incidents occur at football matches, the report said.
According to numbers over the five years, 20 percent of the hooligans were students, 20 percent were self-employed, 12 percent were unemployed, 2 percent were civil servants and 1 percent was retired. The hooligans’ education level was also relatively solid: 42 percent had a high school diploma, 18 percent had a university diploma and 22 percent only had an elementary-school education.
According to the data, the hooligans were mostly focused on football; 3,530 of the hooligans caused disturbances at football matches, 158 caused incidents during basketball games, 51 did so for volleyball, nine for handball, four for boxing and 34 for the remaining sports.
According to the report, the current 2010-2011 sports season has seen over 754,000 Turkish Liras in fines levied against sports clubs for match disturbances. Of these fines, 502,000 liras were levied on Spor Toto Super League teams.
A majority of the fines on sports clubs stemmed from offensive cheers, with a record 1.93 million liras paid by various sports clubs during the 2009-2010 season.
The report indicates that the media and presidents of sports clubs are responsible for violence at football matches, with 31 percent of the blame put on the media and 21 percent on club presidents. Referees only received 5 percent of the blame.
“Stadiums must be remodeled, modern and comfortable. This subject needs to be taken into consideration in police academies and police education. Those who are training for private security should be required to intern at sports institutions. Penalties need to be arranged and considered for public servants who are violent at matches,” the report suggested as measures to remedy the problem of unruly hooligans.
The report also focused on football players, featuring the 3,700 professional and 240,000 amateur registered footballers in the country, and suggested uniting the two branches under one roof.
In addition, the report suggested that the value-added-tax on football matches be lowered; at present, the rate is 18 percent but only 8 percent for movie tickets.

Fan arrested for fighting at Weymouth Football Club
A VISITING fan was arrested at Weymouth Football Club on Saturday after police were called deal with a fight.
A Dorset Police spokesman said three members of the public called them and after five squad cars arrived at the Bob Lucas Stadium one visitor was arrested and charged.
The police were called at 4pm at the start of the second half when some Weymouth fans swapped ends of the ground as they do at each match.
A police spokesman said they were called about a ‘fight’ at the Football stadium. He said: “One person was arrested and charged with a public order offence. It was a 32-year-old male who was visiting the town.”
The chairmen of both clubs had gone on to the terrace from the stand to calm people down.
George Rolls, chairman of Weymouth Football Club, said there was no trouble inside the ground but 20 visiting supporters were ejected from the stadium.
He said: “There were young lads being boisterous and it went a little bit over the top.
“But to be fair to the Weymouth fans they conducted themselves really well and didn’t react. The police moved the visitors on their way as a precaution.”
Nigel Biddlecombe, associate director at Weymouth Football Club, said: “After half time some Salisbury fans were moved down behind the other goal and a few younger fans were ejected from the stadium”
On Saturday the Bob Lucas Stadium was the busiest it had been so far this season with 837 fans through the turnstiles.
In previous seasons the fans have remained segregated but this is not required in the Zamaretto League Premier Division.

Seven arrested as violence flared at Bristol City v Leeds United game
BRISTOL City has launched an internal investigation after violent incidents during the club's defeat to Leeds United.
The club confirmed it has launched the probe following a number of "isolated incidents" at the Championship match on Saturday which City lost 2-0.
Stewards at the game have been praised for their conduct during the unrest that is understood to have been sparked by away fans buying tickets in home areas.
Police made seven arrests for public order offences related to the game but told the Evening Post that figure was "below average" for a crowd of around 18,000 at Ashton Gate.
Fans have raised concerns though about the presence, and treatment of, Leeds fans throughout the stadium and incidents of them being abused as a result of their location.
Bristol City spokesman Adam Baker told the Post the club "condemned trouble of any kind" and would "deal accordingly" with any supporters "found to have been in the wrong".
"We would like to praise the work of our stewards for their efforts on the day," he said.
"The club worked hard with Leeds United and the police to ensure any potential problems were minimised."
A City fan, who asked not to be named, told the Post Leeds fans were dotted all over the stadium.
He also claimed he saw a Leeds fan in the Dolman Stand set upon by numerous other City fans while the stewards were trying to remove him.
A Leeds fan from Devon left at half-time after being "shocked and horrified" by the abuse directed at him and his 11-year-old daughter.
Paul Northcott has complained to the club and the Football League about his treatment. The father-of-two said he called Ashton Gate and was advised to sit in the Atyeo Stand.
But after "standing to clap the first goal then sitting down", he and his daughter were heavily abused by two separate men, one with a family of his own.
"If I was in certain parts of that ground I wouldn't have, but we were in the family stand," he said.
Fans from both clubs were facing off in the corner between the Williams Stand and the East Stand and plastic bottles were thrown from the 2,500-strong Leeds contingent.
Chair of Bristol City's Supporters' Trust Stuart Rogers said he was sure the club would "be taking a good look at it".
"We are really saddened by what appears to have happened and don't condone violence of any sort against away fans but aren't in a position to comment further.
"As a fan I'd have to say it is ill-advised to go into a section of home supporters as an away fan."
