Police appeal for help tracing 20 Sunderland fans following fight with rivals
FIVE football fans have been arrested by police investigating a suspected organised brawl outside a city centre bar ahead of a Premier League match.
Police today (Tuesday, February 12) detained five Sunderland supporters in connection with what they believe to have been a pre-arranged fight with rivals from West Ham on Saturday, January 12.
Officers also released CCTV stills of another 20 Black Cats’ fans they want to question in connection with the violence outside Revolution Bar, at Low Row, in Sunderland at about 2.15pm.
About 50 people were involved in the fighting, which took place in front of city centre shoppers and left a number of people injured.
Northumbria Police this morning arrested three people in Sunderland and another one each in Chester-le-Street and South Shields on suspicion of violent disorder. All five are now being questioned in police custody.
Chief Superintendent Kay Blyth, Sunderland Area Commander, said: "I must stress this sort of incident is extremely unusual. Tens of thousands of people were at that match and the overwhelming majority of football fans were there to support their team and have an enjoyable afternoon out.
"However, anyone taking part in violence or disorder either before, during, or after football matches will not be tolerated and this action demonstrates the tough stance we will take on anyone suspected of being involved in such behaviour".
Footage of the incident shot by a member of the public on a mobile phone and posted on You Tube appears to show about 20 young men in a stand-off in the street followed by a fight.
Police say they believe all the fans shown on the CCTV images are Sunderland fans and appealed for help in tracing them.
Chief Superintendent Blyth added: "Behaviour such as this will not be tolerated and, by working alongside us, fans can help us to prevent those involved from attending matches.
"I'd appeal for the help of the public to identify those people in the images who we need to trace and speak to about the disorder which took place before the match."
Shields man arrested over fight before Sunderland-West Ham game
A SOUTH Tyneside man has been arrested in a probe into organised football violence.
The Sunderland AFC supporter was arrested at his home in South Shields earlier today by officers investigating disorder before the club’s match with West Ham United last month.
He was one of five people arrested on suspicion of violent disorder in coordinated swoops on homes in South Shields, Sunderland and Chester-le-Street.
They are all in custody being quizzed about their part in a pre-arranged fight between sets of both supporters at about 2.15pm on Saturday, January 12, outside Revolution in Low Row, Sunderland.
Police have not released any more information on those arrested.
Chief Superintendent Kay Blyth, Sunderland Area Commander, said: “This morning a number of arrests were made in connection with disorder which took place before the Sunderland versus West Ham match at the Stadium of Light last month.
“The arrests have taken place across Sunderland, South Shields and Chester le Street and these people are currently in custody being questioned.
“Tens of thousands of people were at that match and the overwhelming majority of football fans were there to support their team and have an enjoyable afternoon out.
“However, anyone taking part in violence or disorder either before, during, or after football matches will not be tolerated and this action demonstrates the tough stance we will take on anyone suspected of being involved in such behaviour.
“We’ll continue to do everything possible to ensure the safety of football fans and the rest of the general public.”

Police appeal after Leeds United fans involved in disorder
Police are appealing for witnesses after Leeds United fans were involved in disorder on their way to to their team’s match on Saturday.
A group of Leeds fans had stopped off in the Lord Burton in East Staffordshire on the way to Leeds United’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Police were called to reports of disorder involving the Leeds fans and Rotherham fans, and both groups were dispersed.
There was also a fracas at Rotherham’s game against Burton Albion.
A smoke bomb and flare were set off in the away terrace, and a number of fans were ejected.
Towards the end of the game objects, including plastic bottles and coins, were thrown at officials and police officers.
Chief Inspector Steve Maskrey, East Staffordshire LPT Commander, said: “The match was attended by around 1,900 Rotherham fans and those involved in these incidents account for only a small minority. The vast majority watched the match, along with home supporters, and remained in good spirits causing no problems whatsoever.
“The behaviour displayed by these so-called ‘football fans’ is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We have already identified a number of individuals from the South Yorkshire area and they can expect a knock on the door in the not to distant future.
“I would urge anyone who witnessed either incident, or anyone who can identify those involved, to contact us immediately.”

Dynamo Dresden ban own fans from away games - 13/02/2013
Source : http://www.reuters.com
German second division club Dynamo Dresden have banned their own supporters from three away games after yet another episode of violence, this time at Kaiserslautern.
Dynamo fans repeatedly let off fireworks during the 3-0 defeat on Friday and were involved in vandalism outside the ground.
"In Kaiserslautern, people were seen in the away fans section block that for years have had nothing to do with Dynamo or have ever been part of the club's supporters," said club president Andreas Ritter on Dynamo's website.
"We need to protect our organization against such criminals and therefore reluctantly refrain from taking our fans to away games."
Dynamo were thrown out of next season's German Cup after fans clashed with police and caused play to be delayed during a tie at Bundesliga side Hanover 96 in November.
The club said they would not take up their quota of tickets for the away games against Aue, Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Brauschweig.
"We hope these measures will send out a signal that we are aware of the problem," said general manager Christian Mueller
"We are very hopeful that we can keep a distance between ourselves and the people who repeatedly bring the club into disrepute."

Crystal Palace - Charlton Athletic FC - 02/02/2013
Source : http://www.croydonguardian.co.uk
Football hooligans caused havoc when they went on the rampage following Palace’s 2-1 win over their rivals.
Groups of Charlton FC supporters smashed up cars and damaged residents’ property as they made their way towards Norwood Junction station after their game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
Trouble first started inside the ground, when several rows of seats were broken, flares illegally set off and toilets damaged.
Problems escalated as the away fans made their way home, with fans jumping on cars, knocking down parts of a wall and smashing vehicles in Sangley Road with pieces of wood.
Ten arrests have been made so far and four men charged, but more are expected after police confirmed they were investigating damage caused after the match.
New acting borough commander Chief Superintendent Richard Wood is also expected to meet residents to talk about their concerns following the clash.
Chief Superintendent Adrian Roberts, who was the police match commander for the game on Saturday, February 2, said: “I was disappointed to see property and vehicles damaged.
“Detectives from Croydon CID began their investigation of this damage on Saturday and we will be determined to bring all of those responsible for this mindless destruction to justice."
More than 3,000 away fans attended the game, but only a small minority of fans caused trouble.
After the match, away fans were held in Park Road by a police cordon while Palace fans made their way home, but as they were gradually released through the cordon the trouble started.
Residents said they were scared as they watched fans cause the damage while they made their way down Sangley Road, South Norwood.
Some Charlton fans took to Twitter and gloated about the damage caused, but residents said it was not a laughing matter.
Ruth Ndagire, 54, of Sangley Road, has lived there for seven years and had her car damaged by fans.
She said: “It was too much.
“It was noisy and there were loads of them coming down the street.
“It was very scary. Especially when there are groups who are destroying property, it was not nice at all.”
Amanda Anderson, 36, watched from her window.
She said: “Everybody who lives down here said it made more sense to take them down the main road.
“We do not understand why police brought fans down a residential street.
“People are having to lock their children inside because they are so worried.
“The kids are scared and it should not be like that.”
Police have used the tactic of holding fans before directing them down the route to successfully police recent games involving Millwall and Brighton.
But police will now speak to residents about their concerns.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman wrote on Twitter on the day of the game: “Challenging game to police today, made so by very small minority intent on causing problems and several arrests made. There were no major incidents and kept fans safe.”
Councillor Wayne Lawlor, of South Norwood ward, said he hoped the police and Crystal Palace FC would take responsibility over the matter.
He said: “I am shocked and appalled by this disgraceful behaviour from a minority of antisocial hooligans who rampaged through South Norwood terrorising innocent residents.”
Crystal Palace FC have chosen not to comment on the incident.
Among people charged on the day were a 16-year-old and a 43-year-old accused of possessing and discharging a flare at a sporting event.
A total of 10 people were arrested during the policing operation for the game between Crystal Palace and Charlton on Saturday 2 February.
Mark Wilson, 43, was arrested and charged with possession and discharge of a flare. He will appear at Croydon Magistrates Court on February 27.
A 16-year-old boy was also charged with the same offence. He will appear at Croydon Youth Court on February 14.
Alex Kingshott, 35, of Chislehurst, was charged with possession of cocaine and will appear at Croydon Magistrates court on February 27.
Nicky Windham, 28, of Bexleyheath, will appear at Croydon Magistrates on the same date after being charged with affray.
Six other men were arrested for a variety of offences including affray, police obstruction, public disorder offences and possession of class A drugs.
They have all been bailed to return to a south London police station in March.

Man arrested over alleged abuse of El-Hadji Diouf by Millwall fans - 13/02/2013
Source : http://www.guardian.co.uk
• Police arrest 53-year-old over abuse of Leeds striker at Den • Millwall appalled by footage broadcast on TV
A man has been arrested in connection with allegations of racist abuse aimed at the Leeds striker El-Hadji Diouf by Millwall fans, the Metropolitan Police said.
The 53-year-old man was arrested after Sky Sports News broadcast footage which appeared to show some Millwall fans hurling insults at the Senegalese forward during a game at the Den in November.
Millwall said they were appalled by the footage. The club captain, Danny Shittu, said he was deeply saddened by what he had seen in the documentary.
The man, from Enfield, north London, was in custody on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, a Met spokesman said.
Millwall have promised to ban any individuals for life if they are found guilty.
The footage appears to show fans hurling insults at Diouf during a Championship game on 18 November.
The Lions' chief executive, Andy Ambler, said that an initial investigation was closed after Diouf said he heard no racist abuse aimed at him.
"Like all Millwall fans and football fans generally, we're appalled by the footage we've seen," he said. "Sadly racism exists in our society and certain individuals want to bring it into football grounds. It's down to us in football do to more."

Another three Sunderland fans arrested following fight before West Ham game - 13/02/2013
Source : http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk
A FURTHER three people have been arrested by police investigating a brawl between football fans outside a city centre bar.
Two teenagers from Washington, aged 18 and 17, along with a 17-year-old from Chester-le-Street have been arrested following violence which flared ahead of Sunderland’s match with West Ham last month.
All three are being questioned by police today.
On Tuesday, five people were arrested in connection with the incident. They were a 23-year-old man from Sunderland, a 20-year-old from South Tyneside, an 18-year-old from Chester-le-Street and another of the same age from Sunderland and a 16-year-old youth, also from Sunderland. They have all been released on police bail.
All eight were arrested in connection with what police think was a pre-arranged fight between Sunderland and West Ham fans ahead of the Premier League match on January 12.
Fighting broke out between an estimated 50 rival fans at around 2.15pm outside Revolution Bar at Low Row in Sunderland.
Chief Superintendent Kay Blyth, Sunderland Area Commander, said: "More arrests have been made in connection with this disorder and the investigation continues.
"We still have CCTV out there of people we need to speak to about the incident. We've so far had a good response and are following up a number of lines of enquiry with more arrests expected.
"This sort of incident is unusual and as we've said previously, the vast majority of football supporters just want to enjoy the match.
"However, when any kind of violence takes place we will do everything possible to make sure those suspected of being involved are traced and the appropriate action taken".

Zenit St Petersburg - Liverpool FC - 14/02/2013
Source : http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com
Liverpool fans attacked ahead of Zenit game
St Petersburg's Peter TV said that on Wednesday evening about 40 hooligans attacked a small group of Liverpool fans when they were coming out of a local bar, forcing the English to seek cover inside.
Security staff used baseball bats to disperse the hooligans before escorting seven Liverpool supporters to safety. No one was seriously hurt, the report said.
Zenit assured Liverpool on Wednesday that visiting fans attending the game should feel safe after concerns were raised over racism.
"The club's personnel... have been working hard so that the players and fans alike would enjoy tomorrow's match," the Russian champions said in a statement.
"Zenit have always condemned any form of racism. We hope our opponents share the same principles and tomorrow we all be treated to a great football match and passionate crowd support."
Zenit supporters have been notorious for racist chanting during home games while the city of St Petersburg is known to have a strong right-wing nationalist influence.
In December, Zenit's largest fan group demanded the club refrain from buying black and gay players following turmoil surrounding the acquisition of Brazil striker Hulk. The fans said they wanted more home-grown or European players in the team.
Local media reported that some 2,500 police were patrolling the area outside the Petrovsky stadium ahead of the match, which Zenit went on to win 2-0 with goals from Hulk and Sergei Semak.

Leeds United fans sentenced for “mindless violence” - 13/02/2013
Source : http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk
A judge has condemned a group of young Leeds United supporters for their mindless and senseless violence during disorder in Huddersfield.
Sentencing at Leeds Crown Court, Judge Geoffrey Marson QC said custody was appropriate for such behaviour on May 19 last year, adding: “This was relatively prolonged mob violence.”
CCTV footage showed a number of the Leeds supporters “fuelled by alcohol and peer group pressure” in a confrontation with Huddersfield fans in Market Street with bottles and punches being thrown.
Later some of the Leeds group were in further trouble at the railway station involving two Bradford City fans, Daniel Farrer and Vinnie Eastman who were chased onto the railway line forcing services to stop.
“Those who participate in extreme violence in a public place to the fear of others, must expect immediate custodial sentences,” the judge said.
Jack Harley, 20 of Ingram Close, Holbeck, Leeds was sent to a young offender institution for 18 months after admitting violent disorder in Market Street and affray and obstructing the railway line. Farrer, 19 of Westcombe Court, Wyke, Bradford, and Eastman, 20 from High Wycombe, also received 18 months in a young offender institution for affray and obstruction.
Sentenced to 15 months in a young offender institution were Andrew Hamblin, 20, from Reading and Jordan Coyle, 20, of Church Road, Batley who admitted violent disorder, Elliot Burniston, 18, of Wesley Croft, Beeston, Leeds, and Dale Kellett, 18, of Allenby Drive, Beeston who both admitted violent disorder, affray and obstruction: and Connor Charlton, 18, of Northcote Green, Beeston who admitted affray. Five youths aged 16 and 17, who cannot be identified were given detention and training orders of either eight or 12 months and a 15-year-old was given a referral order. Huddersfield fans involved will be sentenced later.

Huddersfield Town supporters jailed after clash with Leeds United fans - 13/02/2013
Source : http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk
A judge has locked up seven Huddersfield Town supporters involved in violence in the town centre during a confrontation with a group of Leeds United fans last year.
Trouble erupted on May 19 after many of those involved had been watching a televised match between Blackpool and West Ham in different public houses.
About 4pm the group from Leeds left the pub and gathered in Market Street and fighting broke out when the Huddersfield contingent appeared.
“It was a serious offence of violent disorder,” said Judge Geoffrey Marson QC sentencing at Leeds Crown Court yesterday. (Feb 13)
“About 40 youths and men were involved fighting, throwing punches, bottles, pieces of wood and shop signs, mindless senseless violence is used.”
He said frightened members of the public had to seek refuge in doorways while shopkeepers closed doors and pulled down shutters.
The violence continued into Westgate where others became involved and cctv captured one man being kicked on the ground. Commending those involved in the investigation Judge Marson said “This was relatively prolonged mob violence.”
The seven from Huddersfield were Jeremy McDonald, 45 of Gramfield Road, Crosland Moor jailed for 26 months for violent disorder, Andrew Marshall, 48 of Bath Street, sent to prison for 21 months after admitting violent disorder and affray, Neil Doyle, 31 of Wakefield Road, admitted violent disorder and affray and was jailed for 18 months; Darren Judge, 21 of Queen Elizabeth Gardens, Huddersfield, pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was jailed for 15 months; Samuel Mcquitty, 27 of Ruskin Grove, Deighton, sent to prison for 15 months after admitting affray; Gavin Greig, 20 of Arthur Street, Golcar was given 15 months in a young offender institution for violent disorder and affray, and Richard Gough, 48, of Leeds Road, Deighton, sentenced to nine months in prison for affray.

Croatia, Serbia ban away fans for qualifying matches - 16/02/2013
Source : http://gulftoday.ae
Away fans will be banned from both World Cup qualifying matches between Croatia and Serbia, the two football federations announced on Thursday.
The former enemies took the joint decision in a bid to avoid crowd trouble at the games in Zagreb and Belgrade. “It was decided that there will be no organized travel of visiting squads’ fans for the next two Group A qualifying matches between Croatia and Serbia,” the federations said in a joint statement.
“The decision is based on the fact that both matches are high risk and it was concluded that this is the best preventive measure.” They added that the move was made in line with recommendations by FIFA, UEFA and the relevant local authorities.
The first match is to be played on March 22 in Zagreb, and the second on September 6 in Belgrade.
Relations between the two countries gradually improved since Croatia’s 1990s war against Belgrade-backed rebel Serbs who opposed its independence from the former Yugoslavia.
However, sports events including teams from the two countries are still considered high risk.
The qualifiers are the first football matches between the two nations since the 1991-1995 conflict.
In 1999, Croatia played their 2000 European championship qualifiers against Yugoslavia — at the time composed of Montenegro and Serbia — without visiting fans.

Troublesome French supporters cause panic in Valencia - 14/02/2013
Source : http://www.marca.com
PSG Thugs
PSG won the Champions league match at the Mestalla stadium, but their more radical supporters were responsible for damaging the image of Beckham, Leonardo, as well as the Sheikh's millions. The escalation of violence, intimidation and destruction that occurred in the vicinity of the Mestalla in the hours preceding the match was shameful for a club of that level.
The PSG Thugs caused panic and left an unmistakable trail from the Westin hotel, where the players stayed, to the Avenida de Aragón street. It took them about thirty minutes to cover the route, flattening everything in their way.
A group of about fifty radical fans, organised like fifteen squadrons, went on a rampage, causing panic in an area very close to the stadium. There was broken glass, bars smashed up and tables and chairs flying through the air. The battle ended with six arrests and more than one injury.
The troublemakers moved quickly. They tried to set fire to two waste containers close to the PSG hotel and marched down a central street smashing up terraces and street furniture.
Several people suffered cuts from the broken glass. Fortunately the police arrived. 20 hours after the attack glass, blood trails and broken bottles could still be seen.

Luton Town are aiming to become the first non-league side to qualify for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup since 1914.
Luton set up their 5th round clash with Millwall by beating Norwich City 1-0 at Carrow Road.
Bedfordshire Police have promised a "large and visible presence" at the game at Kenilworth Road.
In 1985 and FA Cup match between the two sides ended in violence.
Police have said only a "small minority" of fans behaved badly at an FA Cup match between Luton and Millwall.
The FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Kenilworth Road ended with Millwall winning 3-0.
Bedfordshire Police said seven people were arrested for public order offences.
Three men were arrested before the game.
The other arrests, including one for throwing a bottle at a police horse, were made after the game in the town centre after a short stand off between police and a minority of fans in the areas of Dudley Street and George Street.
All those arrested remain in custody pending further enquiries.
“I have been pleased with the way today’s policing operation has gone,” said Supt Linda Kelly, tactical commander for the day.
“It was an excellent partnership between ourselves, the clubs, the other forces and agencies. It is a shame that a small minority behaved badly after the game but the vast majority of fans enjoyed the occasion despite the result on the field and went away without causing any problems.
“There will be a debrief and any people we identify who did cause problems we will look to arrest at a later time.”

Police intervene after clashes before Cardiff City v Bristol City match
A Cardiff city centre pub was forced to close after fans left a trail of destruction before the Cardiff City v Bristol City game this lunchtime.
Police led a group of fans to safety when trouble flared at the Great Western Wetherspoon pub, Saint Mary Street just before midday.
Tables and chairs were left overturned at the pub after rowdy fans, said to be Bristol City supporters, started trouble in what police are describing as an "incident."
Further reports on Twitter say football fans have been boasting about leaving a trail of wreckage behind. Other comments suggest there has been a riot and flares let off.
The Great Western has since confirmed on Twitter that they were forced to close at lunchtime following the damage done to the pub.
Police have denied reports of a riot but declined to comment on exactly what took place other than to say they had acted to stop further trouble.
South Wales Police's control supervisor Mark Oliver confirmed that police had been called to the pub just before midday.
He said: "There was not a riot. We were assisting groups of fans. One of these groups was led through the pub after an incident."
Mark Keohane said on Twitter: "Well, the Spoons in Cardiff has been left in a bit of a state!"
Carly added: "Cardiff has been taken over by Bristol City fans!! Police everywhere."
An employee at the Great Western declined to say what had happened at the pub.
However on Twitter a notice was posted at 2pm today saying: "You may have heard about the damage done to our pub, we are piecing things together and clearing up. Will open again soon."

Police officer hit at A-League match as football fans erupt at AAMI Park
A POLICE officer was struck by an unruly football fan as an A-League football match descended into chaos for the second time in a month.
Victoria Police said a member was struck to the head and knocked to the ground about 9.45pm on Saturday shortly after Western Sydney Wanderers' 2-1 defeat of Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.
The officer, who was struck from behind, is believed to have not required medical treatment.
Police officers, who had felt under threat, deployed capsicum spray to disperse the crowd and try to regain control.
A 16-year-old from Sydney was later charged with recklessly causing injury, and might face a $4500 fine.
Two women were treated for smoke inhalation after several flares were set off.
And 14 people were evicted by police and security for misbehaviour.
There were reports of arguments between rival supporters on public transport, in full view of Protective Services Officers who failed to quell them.
Saturday night's rowdy crowd scenes at AAMI Park follow a $40,000 bill Melbourne Victory was slapped with by the management of Etihad Stadium, after wild fans tore seats apart during its derby with Melbourne Heart on February 2.
Supporters of both clubs were responsible for damaging 170 seats.
It is understood that Melbourne Victory management had approached Football Federation Australia to apply pressure to the Heart's management to cover some of the damages bill.
The destruction prompted Victory's general manager of operations, Trent Jacobs, to arrange for club officials to meet supporter groups, security and Victoria Police to discuss how to improve crowd behaviour.
