Italian football hooligans jailed for unprovoked attack on Tottenham Hotspur fans in Rome - 29/10/2013
Source : http://www.telegraph.co.uk
One Rome ultra jailed for five-and-a-half years and another for four-and-a-half years for assault and grievous bodily harm on Tottenham fans last November
Two Italian football hooligans who took part in an unprovoked attack on a group of Tottenham Hotspur fans in a pub in Rome have been jailed. Mauro Pinnelli, 26, was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison while Franceco Ianari, 27, received a jail term of four-and-a-half years, after they were found guilty by a court in Rome of assault and grievous bodily harm. Ianari, a market stall trader and AC Roma fan who had previously received a stadium ban for violence, was caught by police on a bus shortly after the attack. Pinnelli, a manual worker, was also an avid Roma supporter. They were part of a group of “ultra”, or extremist, Roma and Lazio fans who launched the attack on the Spurs fans as they were drinking quietly in The Drunken Ship, a pub in Campo de’ Fiori, one of Rome’s most picturesque piazzas. The Italians pulled on motorcycle helmets and pulled out poles, knives and knuckle-dusters before launching the attack on the pub last November, on the eve of a Europa League match between Tottenham and Lazio. Around 12 Spurs fans were injured in the attack, which witnesses likened to a “commando raid”. The most seriously injured, Ashley Mills, a 25-year-old builder from Brentwood, Essex, spent several days in hospital being treated for serious stab wounds. Pinnelli and Ianari were the first Italian fans to be found guilty of the attack. Luca Tescaroli, the prosecutor in the trial, said they had launched an act of “wild aggression” in a place which was “symbolic” of Rome’s nightlife. Another 10 Italians are being investigated by police for the raid, which left the pub trashed and caused around £15,000 (€18,000) worth of damage. The bar, which is popular with expatriates and foreign students, had to close for weeks for repairs and refurbishment. Police who investigated the 15-minute assault said it was “premeditated and well organised”, likening the violence to “urban guerrilla warfare”. The Italians had attacked the English fans with “knives, poles, iron bars, and chair legs”. The targeting of the Spurs fans appeared to have been motivated in part by anti-Semitism. Lazio is notorious for the fascist sympathies of some of its fans, while Spurs are known for their Jewish support base in north London. At the match, Lazio fans chanted “Juden Tottenham”, using the German word for Jew, and unfurled a large, provocative banner which read “Free Palestine”.

England : Football hooligans begin jail terms after brawl costs public £60,000 - 29/10/2013
Source : http://www.shropshirestar.com
Three of the thugs involved in the brawl have been jailed and a further three received suspended sentences after the violent skirmish between Shrewsbury and Walsall supporters, which started in front of shoppers in Mardol, Shrewsbury before spilling out across Smithfield Road, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Police officers were injured as they tried to restore order before the League One game on October 14 last year, including Constable Lee Saunders, who suffered a broken leg.
Extra policing to end the mayhem and arrest those responsible cost £24,000 and the subsequent criminal investigation cost another £30,000.
The Crown Prosecution Service used a further £5,600 to prepare each case for sentencing, bringing the total amount of taxpayers’ money spent as a result of the brawl to £59,600.
Eight men appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday after they each pleaded guilty to violent disorder.
The court watched CCTV footage of the disorder, which involved multiple fights, with men kicking and punching one another.
Sentencing, Judge Graham Cliff, said: “This was in a public place where members of the public were no doubt frightened, inconvenienced and in which a police officer was injured.”
He said the brawl was not pre-planned and he passed sentences on each individual based on their level of involvement.
Shaun Peach, 25, of Old Heath, Heathgates, Shrewsbury, had only just come to the end of a four year ban on attending regulated football matches when he muscled in on the fracas. He had a criminal record comprising 15 offences and nine sets of convictions, resulting in sentences including four months in a young offenders institute for affray.
He was jailed for 12 months and received a six-year ban from football matches.
Also jailed was Stephen Hawkesford, 37, of Allerton Road, Shrewsbury, who had a criminal record of 14 offences and had previously served a four-year ban from football games. The father-of-three was imprisoned for 12 months and was given a six-year ban.
Daniel Jones, 26, of Brook Gardens, Ford, Shrewsbury, received a six-month jail term and a six-year ban. It was the first conviction for the plasterer who has three children.
Meanwhile, Alexander Pugh, 19, of Lowfield, Shrewsbury, received a six-month sentence in a young offenders institute suspended for 12 months, after he admitted he had intended to cause “mayhem” as he got a “buzz” out of football violence.
Pugh, a plasterer with no previous convictions, was banned from attending regulated football matches for four years and was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work. Lewis Gardiner, 19, of Mottershead, Shrewsbury, who had no previous convictions, was sentenced to six months in a young offenders institute suspended for 12 months. He was banned for four years and ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work. He must obey a curfew to be home between 8pm and 6am Friday to Sunday and pay £500 costs.
David Jones, 37, of Sultan Road, Shrewsbury, was sentenced to six months in prison suspended for two years. The forklift truck driver and father of two was given a four- year ban from football games and must undertake 250 hours of unpaid work.
Aaron Pinches, 20, of Prestbury Green, Shrewsbury, said he had drunk eight to nine pints before the brawl and his mother would have given him “a clip around the ear” if she had seen the CCTV footage. He had no previous convictions and was banned from football games for four years. He must also carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.
Paul Walker, 42, of Swains Meadow, Church Stretton, had his case adjourned for four weeks to await reports. The court heard he had six sets of previous convictions from 12 offences including violent disorder and actual bodily harm. He had once been the victim of football-related violence, having been stabbed while waiting for a taxi with his girlfriend in an unrelated incident.

Some 30 Russian Football Fans Detained After Stadium Brawl
About 30 fans were detained in the Central Russian city of Yaroslavl on Wednesday following a violent brawl during a football match, a police spokesman said. The match between Spartak Moscow and Shinnik Yaroslavl was stopped for around half an hour midway through the second half when a group of Spartak fans hurled seats at police and attempted to get onto the pitch. Police had to use water cannons to quell the violence. "About 30 people were taken to a police department. They are now being questioned by police and this might last until [Thursday] morning,” Yaroslavl police spokesman Alexander Shikhanov said. Prior to the incident, a banner with nationalist symbols was unfurled at the sector of the stadium, where fans of Spartak were seated. According to police, the brawl began minutes after an unidentified spectator ran into the football field and rushed towards grandstands occupied by fans of Spartak.

Police use water cannon to break up stadium violence in Russia, detain about 30 fans
Russian news reports say the trouble, including fireworks and fights, forced the Wednesday match between Shinnik Yaroslavl and Spartak Moscow to be halted for about a half-hour. Spartak won the game 1-0 and advanced to the Russia Cup quarterfinals.
The detained fans may be held by police until morning, the state news agency RIA Novosti cited police spokesman Alexander Shikhanov as saying. There were no immediate indications of whether charges would be filed.
The disorder took place in the section where Spartak fans were seated, news reports said, but it was not clear what triggered the violence.

England : Bristol police crack down on football hooligans in series of dawn raids - 30/10/2013
Source : http://www.bristolpost.co.uk
Police have launched a massive crackdown on football hooligans in a series of dawn raids across Bristol this morning.
Teams of officers were up before sunrise to knock on the doors of suspects identified as being involved in the violence and disorder when Bristol Rovers played Bristol City at Ashton Gate on September 4.
Having already arrested 28 people since the highly-charged night, the constabulary had 45 targets in and around Bristol.
24 of those were Bristol Rovers fans, 14 were Bristol City fans and 7 had breached football banning orders restricting their access to matches across the country.
So far this morning the police have made another 21 arrests.
As previously reported, there was violence before, during and after the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie when the Robins won 2-1.
At the end of the game scores of spectators invaded the pitch and were met by a mounted police response.
The Bristol Post later published 24 images from CCTV, recorded camera footage and photographs members of the public had sent to the police, of people they wanted to identify in relation to the disorder.
So far 14 of those have been identified and were targeted in today's operation, with the remaining 10 still unidentified.
Assistant Chief Constable Louisa Rolfe said police had prepared for trouble and had put a lot of resources into policing the first competitive Bristol derby in seven years.
"However, I think even we were surprised by the level of violence on that day and the destruction caused to our communities in Bristol," she said.
ACC Rolfe said her officers would not tolerate any football related violence and their actions are fully supported by both football clubs, who have vowed to ban anyone arrested today for life.

UEFA punishes CSKA Moscow for fans’ racist chants - 27/10/2013
Source : http://rt.com
SKA Moscow will have to play its next home European Champions League match with Bayern Munich in a partially closed stadium as punishment after its fans racially abused Manchester City’s Yaya Toure during a game on October 23.
The Union of European Football Associations’ (UEFA) disciplinary panel charged the Russian club after Ivorian midfielder Toure complained that he heard the offensive chants by home fans during City’s 2-1 win at the Arena Khimki stadium outside Moscow.
UEFA found CSKA Moscow guilty for the “racist behavior” of its supporters and ordered the closure of the stadium’s sector D for its next home game in the UEFA Champions League, scheduled to take place on November 27.
“The fight against racism is a high priority for UEFA,” the organization said in a statement published on Wednesday.
“The European governing body has a zero tolerance policy towards racism and discrimination on the pitch and in the stands. All forms of racist behavior are considered serious offences against the disciplinary regulations and are punished with the most severe sanctions.”
“Following the entry into force of the new disciplinary regulations on 1 June, the fight against racist conduct has been stepped up a level – resulting in more severe sanctions to deter any such behavior,” the statement continues.
Commenting on the news, CSKA general director Roman Babayev called the punishment “minimal” but refused to admit that racial abuse had taken place.
“It has not been proven,” he told ITAR-TASS, stating that the team had mixed feelings over the ruling. “We do understand that we could have been punished more severely given the aggressive campaign launched by the British media.”
CSKA said it might not appeal the decision, as it respects the football governing body. The team is still waiting to receive the full text of the order.
Toure, who captained City for the game, said earlier that he was “furious” about the monkey-chants he heard from CSKA supporters. He demanded that UEFA react to the incident in order to prevent such behavior in the future.
“I’m very, very disappointed about what those fans have done today and I think UEFA have to take action because players with the same color of skin will always be in the same position,” he said after the match at Arena Khimki. “Maybe they could ban the stadium, I don’t know, for a couple of years or a couple of months,” he added.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini said he did not hear the chants, but described them as “stupid things” and “a pity.” He also urged UEFA to take action against the Russian club.
CSKA officials said they were “surprised and disappointed” by Toure’s claims about alleged racial abuse. The club said it carefully studied the video of the game and found no racist insults from fans.
CSKA striker Seydou Doumbia, also an Ivorian national, noted after the game that his colleague was exaggerating.
“I didn't hear anything like that from the CSKA fans...Yes, they're always noisy in supporting the team, and try to put as much pressure as possible on our opponents, but they wouldn't ever allow themselves to come out with racist chants. So my Ivory Coast colleague is clearly exaggerating.”
Football commentator Vladimir Stognienko believes the UEFA decision has caused the entire football association pay for the mistake of a single person.
"Yaya Toure may have heard somebody shouting something; incidents like that happen from time to time. But it's not a sign of widespread racism, rather that some individual fans lack a certain culture,” Stognienko told RT.
“Let's not forget that UEFA is a European organization and Europe is touchy when it comes to any form of racism. UEFA calls for a show of friendship on the field, but it's difficult to prevent random incidents carried out by random individuals."
