Croat, Romanian fans detained, 10 injured in Romanian riot
More than 100 people have been detained following violent clashes between rival supporters of Dinamo Zagreb and FC Timisoara at a Europa League match, police said Friday.
Police spokesman Andrei Emil said violence continued during Thursday's game, which Dinamo won 3-0.
Croat fans, some wearing masks and scarves covering their faces, hurled seats, firecrackers and stones during the game. Daily Gazeta Sporturilor reported Friday they shouted "Down with the Serbs!"
Serb B-92 TV reported that Timisoara fans taunted the Croats yelling "Serbia, Serbia!"
Fighting continued in downtown Timisoara after the match. The city has a large population of Serbs and is close to the Serbian border.
Emil said police detained some 117 Croats and 14 Romanians after the match. The newspaper said 10 people, including a police officer, were injured.
Police escorted Croat fans to the Hungarian border, some 60 kilometres west of Timisoara after the match.

Dozens of Croatian football fans detained in Timisoara
A total of 148 Croatian fans of Dinamo Zagreb were detained by Romanian authorities yesterday (Thurs) evening in Timisoara.
Police said they had acted after fans had engaged in violence before and during the Europa League match with FC Timisoara.
Forty-seven Croats and 24 Romanians were detained and fined for disturbing the peace before the match, police spokesman Emil Andrei told the Romanian Times, after they had destroyed street bars on Unirii Square in Timisoara.
Five Croatians were lightly injured but did not need medical assitance.
Another 101 Croatians had also been detained by police, spokeswoman Daniela Stanciu told the Romanian Times. They were detained after they started throwing torches and destroyed a fence at the stadium before the match as they met Romanian fans.
The detained Croatians had been identified and photographed, and the data transmitted to Croatian police who were accompaigning them, Stanciu said.
The detained Croats were then put into their cars and coaches and escorted by police to the Romanian western border town of Cenad.
Over 500 Croatian fans went to Timisoara for the match, which Dinamo Zagreb won by a score of 3-0.

Republic prosecutor asks for ban of Delije, Grobari and United Force - Serbia - 01/10/09
Source: blic.rs
Republic prosecutor, Slobodan Radovanovic, submitted today, to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia, demand to ban organized gathering, departure and presence at football matches and other sporting events for fans of FC Partizan, FC Red Star and FC Rad, the Prosecution PR Tomo Zoric confirmed to Tanjug agency.
"Police now has a duty to take measures and prevent organized gathering, leaving and presence at the stadiums of these fan groups," said prosecution spokesman. Prosecutor Radovanovic earlier today, in a statement to the Tanjug news agency, explained that for such a move of the prosecution, "there are more than serious reasons, because what happened in Belgrade in past days, is the worst vandalism."
"As for the football, it means emptying the North and South, and there are more than serious reasons for that, because everything what happened in past days, is the worst vandalism. Anyone who has looked at request for investigation and legal description of the facts, of what happened in center of the city when Taton lost his life, sees that it was beyond the worst savagery, "said Radovanovic.
He said that he is preparing an initiative that was submitted to the Constitutional Court of Serbia for the prohibition and removal from the register of specific fan groups. "These are not supporters, fans are people who support the sport for humanitarian reasons. These were organized criminal groups involved in crime, as seen from the police report which I obtained these days and that will be used as evidence that I will submit to the Constitutional Court in order to ban these groups and delete them from the register, "noted Radovanovic.
He explained that this is not only about "Grobari" and "Delije", but it is also about a series of "fan groups dealing with crime, and using free time to gather in the city and to kill or beat someone." The prosecutor noted that against them there is a large number of criminal proceedings and filed criminal charges very much about other events, and there is a lot of this individuals who have been reported for the unauthorized possession and carrying of weapons and ammunition.
Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs of Serbia will propose changes of regulations, which the hooligans who create disturbance in sports competitions, and have already been punished for such acts to be prohibited the presence in the field, said today the Minister of Justice Snezana Malovic.
"The Ministry of Justice and the Interior Ministry will soon come out with a proposal for amending the law, which will introduce safeguards and security measures for persons who are convicted or punished for a misdemeanor disturbance of sports competitions, in the sense that they prohibit the continued presence" said Malovic.

Football fan remembered in Toulouse and Belgrade - 01/10/2009
Source : Radio France Internationale
Toulouse supporters paid a moving tribute to Brice Taton during their Europa League match against Club Brugge on Thursday night.
Taton died on Tuesday after suffering brain damage when he was attacked by fans of opposition side Partizan Belgrade on 17 September, prior to Toulouse’s match in the Serbian capital.
Further demonstrations against violence are planned in Belgrade on Friday after Serbian President Boris Tadic called for the “toughest possible measures” to be handed down against those responsible for Taton’s death. Tadic was speaking on Thursday as he laid flowers in memory of Taton in Belgrade.
"It is very important to identify groups behind these violent acts, those inspiring these groups and ideas that inspire violence in our society," Tadic said, adding that violence "leads to fascism."
"Not a single group must create an atmosphere of violence, because it is precisely such atmospheres that lead to tragedies such as the murder of Brice Taton.”
French Sports Minister Rama Yade travelled to Serbia after Thursday was declared a day of mourning in Belgrade. An estimated 5,000 people later gathered for a protest march in the centre of the city, carrying candles and a single red rose each.
Taton, 28, was one of two Toulouse supporters hurt when they were attacked in a bar before their side’s 3-2 victory over Partizan Belgrade. The second French fan has been released from hospital. Belgrade police have arrested ten people in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, several people were injured in Timisoara, Romania on Thursday night, following scuffles between rival supporters ahead of the Europa League match between FC Timisoara and Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb. Fourteen Romanians and 16 Croatians were detained by police.
Thousands of people carry a banner reading "Stop the violence", as they march in Belgrade on 1 October, 2009. The demonstration took place on a day of mourning held for Toulouse supporter Brice Taton.

CSKA Sofia Fan Arrested For Brandishing Knife Against Roma
A fan of the Bulgarian team was arrested by police, before he attacked Italians fans after their Europa League clash...
Italian police have arrested a 36-year-old fan of CSKA Sofia, after he allegedly threatened Roma supporters with a knife when the two teams met on Thursday night in the Europa League.
The man had been captured by stadium CCTV, and was surprised when officers approached the man to defuse the situation, according to ForzaRoma.info.
He was in an agitated state after an exchange of words with some of the Giallorossi's supporters, and brandished a knife. Police intervened before the man had a chance to approach the opposing fans, and placed the Bulgarian under arrest.
When searched by police, a pocket knife with a double blade and a knuckleduster were discovered, concealed in his pocket. He has been charged with being in possession of a weapon.

AFC Wimbledon and England fan from Oxshott hit with three-year football ban - 02/10/2009
Source : Surrey Comet
An AFC Wimbledon fan who was involved in football disorder for more than eight years has been slapped with a football banning order.
Oxshott resident Luke David Meadowcroft, 36, will not be able to watch his team, or England, play in stadiums across England and Wales for the next three years - so will miss his team play at next year’s World Cup.
Details of his involvement in goading and taunting opposition fans repeatedly between 2000 and 2008, often after consuming alcohol, were given to City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, September 30.
Under the terms of the ban he was also banned from using the National Rail network or the London Underground without permission from British Transport Police (BTP).
He was also told to surrender his passport when AFC Wimbledon or England play abroad.
On October 11, 2006, Meadowcroft was arrested in Zagreb after violent disorder broke out following an international match against Croatia.
In November 2008, he was arrested in Berlin after a friendly against Germany, for throwing bottles at Berlin police officers.
PC Marshall, from BTP’s football banning unit, said: “Threatening rival fans in this manner, whether inside or outside the ground, is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“Most AFC Wimbledon fans, like the majority of football supporters, are well behaved and enjoy supporting their team.
“It is only the behaviour of a small minority, like Meadowcroft, who bring the game into disrepute.”

Birmingham City v Aston Villa derby trouble: 19 charged with violent disorder - 02/10/2009
Source : BirminghamMail
A total of 19 football supporters have been charged with violent disorder following an inquiry into clashes after a derby match between Aston Villa and Birmingham City.
The men were arrested earlier this week following appeals for information about suspects captured on CCTV during violence which marred the aftermath of Villa's 1-0 victory over City on September 13.
West Midlands Police said the men had been charged in connection with violence which occurred in Birmingham city centre and the neighbouring Digbeth area following the fixture.
A force spokesman confirmed that 13 men claiming to be fans of Birmingham City will go before city magistrates on October 9, while a further six Villa supporters will appear at the same court on October 12.
The men were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday after police issued images of 22 people being sought in connection with the disorder.
Detective Inspector Simon Vowles said: "We have made a significant number of arrests - and there will be more to come.
"Most people who rang us said they were disgusted by it and felt they had to act because they were sick of seeing their city's reputation ruined."
Mr Vowles added: "The sheer weight and speed of response from the public sends a clear message that this kind of disorder will not be tolerated.
"So-called fans might think they have got away with it if they are not arrested on the day.
"This operation should make the kind of people who believe they can act without any repercussions think twice in future."

Southampton fans targeted in English Defence League recruitment drive - 03/10/2009
Source : Southern Daily Echo
A FAR right-wing group is attempting to recruit Saints fans to its ranks, a Daily Echo investigation has uncovered.
The English Defence League (EDL) last month launched a recruitment drive in Southampton to enlist football fans to march against “Islamic extremism”.
The league, whose demonstrations in London, Luton and Birmingham led to violence, has infiltrated supporter’s online forums and the terraces of St Mary’s Stadium.
Concerned Saints bosses have condemned the group and brought it to the attention of Hampshire police, Southampton City Council, Hampshire FA and football’s antiracism campaign Kick it Out.
Southampton Itchen MP John Denham, who is in charge of promoting inter-faith harmony for the Government, last night branded the group “troublemakers” and said he was confident most fans would have nothing to do with them.
The Echo can reveal Saints this week ordered Facebook to remove the club’s crest from an EDL campaign group founded on the social networking website.
By yesterday 175 people had signed up to the “Southampton FC branch of the EDL”, which claims it wants to peacefully protest against “militant Islam within our shores”.
Desperate to disassociate itself from the fringe group, Saints were last night seeking legal advice to have the name Southampton FC removed from the website page.
A Saints spokesman said: “Southampton Football Club wholeheartedly condemns this type of racist activity. We were made aware of this group, and immediately took the relevant steps to ensure that any implied affiliation was eradicated.
“Further to this, we have notified members of the club’s Racism Just Ain’t Saintly committee of our concerns, and asked that these are passed on to the Premier League and Football League to make other clubs aware of these activities.
“This is something the club will be monitoring in the future as it clearly conflicts with our principles of a united, cohesive and integrated community.”
The right-wing radicals, whose emblem is a St George’s Cross emblazoned on a shield, hit the headlines in recent months after they fought running battles with anti-fascists protesters.
Saints fans were first invited to join the newly formed group on September 17 by a local organiser who goes by the online name of “Bigtonsfc”.
In a posting on the supporter’s website saintsweb.co.uk he said they were a “fast expanding” group who “have had enough of Muslim extremists being allowed to shout about murdering British people and ruining our soldiers’ homecomings”.
It sparked an online debate about the pros and cons of the league that has continued for the past two weeks, however most fans appeared to dismiss the approach.
On the EDL’s own website, members have discussed the desire to organise a demonstration in Southampton. One poster also said a “few Southampton lads” were going to march in a protest planned for Manchester next Saturday.
A spokesman for United Against Fascists, (UAF) which has clashed violently with the EDL over the past two months, described the league as a “threat” and said news that Southampton FC was being targeted was a “very worrying development”.
“They claim they are not racist, but all of the evidence points in the opposite direction. There is no doubt that these are a group of hooligans who have decided they are going to go round multiracial areas to stir up trouble and attack Muslims,” the spokesman said.

Rogues' Gallery Of West Ham 'Hooligans' - 03/10/2009
Source : Londonist
The police have released images of 17 men wanted for questioning in connection with the troubles at the West Ham versus Millwall Carling Cup game on 25 August.
The fixture was marred by pitch invasions, fighting inside and outside the ground, missile throwing and a stabbing. Police will seek banning orders on any convicted malefactors, preventing them attending future games (but not restricting their movements outside games).
The alleged twats, all thought to be West Ham 'fans', were captured on CCTV inside Upton Park. We're intrigued by the sneering ricti of pleasure flickering across most of their faces. It's like these (supposed) nobbers haven't mentally advanced beyond the level of twelve year old school boys, cheering on a playground fight. No, we wouldn't say that to their faces.

CHILLING PROBE REVEALS RIVAL FOOTBALL FIRMS ORGANISINGT BLOODY BATTLES
AN army of 500 hardcore casuals is leading a new wave of soccer violence in Scotland, the News of the World can reveal.
Our chilling investigation has found that rival firms of football thugs are organising bloody battles north and south of the border.
And specialist police teams are now tracking the worst offenders in a bid to halt the bloodshed.
A senior officer told us: "Casuals never went away. Many of them are now second-time-around hooligans.
"We're seeing married DADS getting tooled up and going out with the sole intention of causing trouble."
In August, we told how a Russian fan was knocked out by a flying brick during running battles in the centre of Glasgow between Celtic and Dinamo Moscow fans ahead of a Champions League qualifier at Parkhead.
And on Thursday, scores of hardened Austrian thugs squared up to Scots yobs before Rapid Vienna's hate-filled Europa Cup clash.
But our police insider revealed that Celtic are NOT seen as major players in the casuals league of shame.
The hooliganism expert told us: "Celtic don't have an organised group of casuals - the club's REAL supporters turned on them a long time ago.
"But Rangers can muster a fair-sized firm, as can Hibs. And these guys are not just from Glasgow and Edinburgh but across the Central Belt and beyond.
"Aberdeen don't seem to have as many casuals as they did in the '80s, but Motherwell still have them, as do some of the smaller teams like Partick and Airdrie.
"And there is rivalry between groups from St Johnstone and Dundee United - meaning potential for violence in the Tayside derbies."
Our insider said that up to 500 neds have so far been identified as linked to organised football violence. He added: "When you add to that the hangers-on who also get involved, the number goes up considerably. We're working to identify high- risk individuals involved."
Already this year there have been a series of violent clashes between football neds in Scotland and England.
In BOLTON, a 50-strong Hibs crew - dubbed Capital City Service - battled with English casuals at a shopping centre in the Lancashire town ahead of a pre-season friendly in August.
Cops are still hunting the brawling thugs who terrorised shoppers and smashed store windows.
And a group of Rangers Inter City Firm casuals were collared in April as they headed by train for NEWCASTLE - where they'd planned to team up with Chelsea yobs for a pre-arranged fight with local Tyneside hooligans.
Cops swooped and found one of the ICF leaders carrying a bag of drugs.
He was arrested - and his fellow thugs were sent back to Scotland by British Transport Police (BTP).
Last year's UEFA Cup final riot in Manchester, which saw hundreds of Rangers casuals rampage through the city's streets, also reinforced the grim reputation of the ICF.
But our police source revealed that the mindless football yobs are just as interested in FASHION as fighting.
He explained: "Brands such as Fila, Sergio Tachini, Stone Island, Evisu and Burberry are becoming more prevalent among travelling fans.
"And some groups even have their own favourite designers.
"For instance, Dundee casuals tend to favour Burberry, while others opt for Stone Island, Prada or Evisu. Casuals can easily be spotted by the clothes they wear."
BTP Chief Constable Andy Trotter said: "We know football hooliganism has never gone away. We have noticed a year-on- year increase in arrests across Scotland."
And BTP Constable Stephen Hughes added: "We know a minority of so-called supporters are more intent in engaging in disorder than watching football.
"There is a free flow of intelligence and information between BTP and other forces.
"We'll continue to use modern technology - including the net, CCTV, hand-held and body-mounted cameras - to ensure the majority of fans can travel to matches safely."

Fatality as fans clash
One person died from injuries after Croat and Muslim fans clashed in the southern town of Siroki Brijeg ahead of its Bosnian Premier League match against Sarajevo, police said.
"It seems that one person has died," police spokesman Damir Cutura said.
National radio BH Radio 1 reported that a Sarajevo fan died in the town's medical facility after sustaining serious injuries.
It added that there were several others injured, while fans demolished shops in the town's centre and set at least three vehicles ablaze.
The league match was subsequently cancelled because of the fatality, radio reported.
Following the 1992-1995 war Bosnia remains ethnically divided and violence during major football matches occasionally occurs here.
The war that claimed at least 100,000 lives pitted the country's Croats, Muslims and Serbs against each other.
One man died and at least ten others were injured today during the violence between two rival groups of football supporters in Široki Brijeg, Bosnia.
The trouble broke out on Sunday ahead of a match between the local team and Sarajevo FC.
The victim was fatally struck on the head with a rock, and was identified as Vedran Puljić, a fan of the visiting side. The scene in Široki Brijeg today was described as "veritable street war".
Eyewitnesses told Federation Radio (Radio Federacije BiH) that they saw a police car set on fire, broken glass on the streets, and that shots were heard from pistols and automatic weapons.
The media are reporting that the violence started outside the stadium, when Sarajevo fans, who call themselves "the Hordes of Evil", destroyed several cars.
Significant material damage was also done to a nearby sports venue.
Before kick-off, at the entrance of the stadium, a confrontation occured, oppoising one local supporter and a policeman, followed by violences. Police used flash-balls and 5 people were injured.

Serbia: Top officials for more severe sentences for hooligans - 02/10/2009
Source: http://www.blic.rs/infocus.php?id=5267
The police have to deal with leaders of football fans groups because they are also drug dealers. The judicial system has to follow up the work of the police and rule more severe sentences to them. This has been concluded by Serbia top officials at the session of the Council for security held the day before yesterday.
‘It has been concluded that sentences ruled to hooligans are mild and rare and that criminal legislation has to be changed to allow more severe sentencing of hooligans at football stadiums’, ‘Blic’ source says. Slobodan Radovanovic, Attorney General said yesterday to have filed a request to Serbia Home Ministry to ban organized gathering, organized coming to and organized attending of football matches of ‘Partizan’, ‘Red Star’ and ‘Rad’ fans. Radovanovic also confirmed that a request would be filed to the Constitutional Court of Serbia to erase from the Register violent fan groups organized among ‘delije’ of ‘Red Star’, ‘grobari’ of ‘Partizan’ and ‘united force’ of ‘Rad’. ‘There is a series of groups committing criminal offences while hiding behind names of football fans. They are not fans but criminals what can be concluded from pieces evidence collected by the police. We shall use those proofs to request their ban’, Radovanovic said. Snezana Malovic, Minister of Justice said that her ministry together with the Home Ministry would suggest change of regulations so as to forbid hooligans with criminal file to be present on football stadiums. She also said that the remaining two suspects charged with murder of Brice Taton would be arrested and brought to justice. Serbian competent authorities allowed that representatives of the Toulouse Football Club to participate in court trail against suspects in murder of Brice Taton. They are to testify about Taton’s character.

Police say a Serbian football player has been arrested for allegedly attacking a fan after a league game. Nebojsa Joksimovic, 28, attacked a fan in the stands on Sunday after his Cukaricki Belgrade side lost 2-0 to Jagodina, police said Monday.
Joksimovic, who played for Red Star Belgrade and Neuchatel Xamax in Switzerland, is suspected of "a hostile act at a sports venue," police said.
The 53-year-old Jagodina fan suffered facial injuries during the attack, police said.
Serbia's police have stepped up measures against football-linked violence after hooligans last month attacked French football fan Brice Taton.

Manchester rioters due in court - 05/10/2009
Source : independent.co.uk
Thirteen suspected football hooligans are due in court today accused of taking part in rioting following the 2008 UEFA Cup final in Manchester.
All the suspects - 11 adults and two juveniles - are charged with violent disorder following Glasgow Rangers' defeat by Zenit St Petersburg in Manchester in May last year.

Thousands of drunken Rangers hooligans fought running battles with police as they rampaged through Manchester city centre in more than five hours of trouble.
In separate incidents, two police officers became separated from their units, surrounded by hooligans, knocked to the ground and kicked and stamped on, during the violence.
Along with McSeveney and Stoddart, the other defendants are Greg McKenna, 22, of East Kilbride, Lanarkshire; Brian McVicar, 19, of East Kilbride; Gordon Forrest, 35, of Bearsden, Glasgow; James Bell, 42, of Cumbernauld, Glasgow; Thomas Murphy, 27, of Greenock; David McCullough, 20, of Burnage, Manchester; David Annette, 34, of Chorley, Lancashire; John Saunders, 31, of Cumbernauld, Glasgow, Michael Hindle, 21, of Leyland, Lancashire, and two 17-year-old's, from Glasgow.
