The map of lower league football violence in Germany - 27/10/2009

Source : Bild.de

Players and fans were attacked by 50 neo-Nazi thugs wielding wooden bats and iron bars in the latest ugly violence to hit lower league football matches in Germany.

It took two minutes to break up the fight at the Bizirksklasse-Platz in Leipzig on Saturday in what was an especially brutal case.

BILD has documented the 30 worst incidents of 2009 and put them on a map of Germany.

And It is increasingly looking like fighting and police are the order of the day at matches instead of bratwurst and beer. Comfort has disappeared in most small-town stadiums.

Helmut Spahn is the safety officer with the DFB, the German football association. He said: “The riots have become not more frequent, but more brutal. That is causing concern.”

Players attack referees, fans beat each other up, officials turn violent and police have to wear riot gear. Every weekend, there’s a breakout somewhere.

The DFB is alarmed. Spahn added: “For the one and a half years we have been collecting reports of riots which have led to abandoned games, disrupted games and police deployments. After two years we will analyse the results.”

Politicians are also alarmed. Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Uwe Schünemann (CDU) has estimated that the police in his region have logged about 170,000 hours at lower league matches.

An increasing willingness to use violence has become apparent below the professional leagues.

He said: “We cannot weaken in fighting these hooligans."

Fan researcher Gunter A. Pilz from Hannover said: “We are watching a new wave. The violence has relocated to the lower leagues, where there are less people and security standards are still low.”

As a result of the neo-Nazi attack in Leipzig on Saturday, one man was taken to hospital with a broken cheekbone and several others were treated for cuts and bruises.

Those responsible have not been identified, and the police’s special investigative team was strengthened yesterday from eight people to 16.

Manchester United fans on the rampage

Season 09/10 - October - Page 6 2gviz2p

YOBBISH Manchester United fans left a trail of damage in their wake after going on the rampage at Barnsley's Oakwell stadium last night.
United fans smashed their way into food stands and ransacked them during the Carling Cup clash at Oakwell.

Eight catering staff were trapped inside a food kiosk and had to barricade themselves in a store room for around 25 minutes as fans broke in and stole cash from the till and food from the shelves.

Stewards on the pitch also had food thrown at them during the violence, which marred United's 2-0 fourth-round win.

One police officer attempting to arrest one of the fans involved suffered a minor eye injury during the disturbance.

A South Yorkshire Police investigation into the trouble is now underway.

Police and football club staff will monitor CCTV footage from the ground to try to identify all those involved in the rampage.

Championship club Barnsley is also considering launching a claim for compensation from Premiership team Manchester United for the damage caused by their fans.

A police officer in the ground last night said: "We responded by arresting three people for breaking into the kiosk. Some of these fans that broke into the food kiosk also threw food items at some of the Barnsley stewards."

A Barnsley FC spokesman said the fans responsible for the trouble inside the ground had caused "substantial damage".

He added: "The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand.

"A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further."

A heavy on-pitch police presence was visible during the trouble.

Police in riot gear were pelted with bottles as they attempted to restore order in the concourse of the north stand and police dogs were employed to drive fans back from the pitch.

Two Barnsley fans were led away from Oakwell by police officers after invading the pitch during the game.

And at around 11pm another two people were arrested after fans jumped on to a railway line in an attempt to stop a Barnsley to Sheffield train before it had started moving.

Altogether eight arrests were made - four away fans and four Barnsley supporters – who were detained in police custody overnight.

Season 09/10 - October - Page 6 24d1ow7

Police made eight arrests at Oakwell last night, as trouble broke out between Manchester United and Barnsley supporters during their fourth round Carling Cup encounter.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said catering staff were forced to barricade themselves inside a food kiosk as fans ransacked stock and stole cash from the tills.

Four Manchester United supporters and four Barnsley supporters were arrested by police and taken to Barnsley Police Station. A further two arrests were made later, as Barnsley fans trespassed on a trainline.

"No-one was injured during this time but one police officer suffered a minor facial injury," said the Police spokesman.

A Barnsley spokesman said: "The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand."A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further."

Ten arrested at Carling Cup match

Season 09/10 - October - Page 6 156vlhy

Ten people were arrested after trouble flared during Manchester United's 2-0 Carling Cup win at Barnsley on Tuesday.

Police were hit with bottles and eight catering staff were forced to hide in a store room when fans broke into their kiosk and stole food and money.

One police officer suffered a minor facial injury during the disorder.

Eight people were arrested at the Oakwell ground and two more later when fans jumped onto railway tracks to try to stop a train leaving.

Stewards targeted

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said trouble broke out at about 2030 GMT.

Officers in riot gear and police dogs were used to try to restore order in the north stand and drive fans back from the pitch.

Elsewhere, catering staff had to barricade themselves in a store room for about 25 minutes when their food stand was attacked.

Stewards on the pitch also had food thrown at them and several fans ran onto the pitch towards the end of the fourth-round game.

The police spokesman spokesman said: "No-one was injured during this time, but one police officer suffered a minor facial injury.

"Eight fans were arrested, four Manchester United fans and four Barnsley fans.

"They have been taken to Barnsley police station."

Two further arrests were made at about 2300 GMT after fans jumped onto railway tracks in a bid to stop the Barnsley to Sheffield train.

A spokesman for Barnsley Football Club said on Tuesday night: "The club is going to launch a full investigation as soon as possible after substantial damage was caused in the concourse of the north stand.

"A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage of the incident before we can comment further."

Manchester United condemned the actions of their supporters who were involved in the disorder.

A spokesman said they supported the strongest possible action being taken against those who damaged the club's name, including the imposition of banning orders and the cancellation of season tickets.

Manchester United fans run riot to take gloss off goal by Michael Owen

Manchester United will be at the centre of an FA and police investigation after rampaging supporters brought a sour note to their Carling Cup fourth-round victory at Oakwell last night.

Not for the first time in this competition this season, the football played second fiddle to the thuggery of mindless supporters. Barnsley and South Yorkshire Police both launched investigations last night after United fans stormed the catering outlets in the concourse of the North Stand where the 4,000-strong travelling supporters were seated. The tills were looted and all the stock was taken as staff fled in fear.

Food and drinks were strewn everywhere and police said eight fans had been arrested. Witnesses were interviewed last night and the FA is expected to launch its own inquiry into the disgraceful scenes today. “We have launched a full investigation,” a Barnsley spokesman said.

The chaos, which was reminiscent of the trouble at the second-round match between West Ham United and Millwall at Upton Park in August, did not end there, however.

United fans pelted police, some of whom had dogs with them, and stewards with missiles as they lined up in front of the away end towards the end of the second half and the game was twice held up as two fans ran on to the pitch, with stewards initially reluctant to remove them. Michael Owen must wonder what else he has to do to grab the headlines. On any other night, the United striker’s wonder goal would have been the story, but it is perhaps reflective of the trials and tribulations of the one-time golden boy of English football that his contribution was overshadowed by the ugly scenes.

FA set to probe crowd violence - 28/10/2009

Source : The Sun

THE FA have launched an investigation into last night's crowd disturbances at Barnsley.

Season 09/10 - October - Page 6 14mdeo5

Trouble flared as Manchester United progressed in the Carling Cup with a 2-0 win at Oakwell.

Fans invaded the pitch and prevented United keeper Ben Foster taking a goalkick, while catering staff were trapped in their kiosk as supporters stole cash and food.

South Yorkshire police made eight arrests but the FA will probe a number of incidents which marred the game.

A spokesman said: "There is no place for anti-social or violent behaviour in our game.

"Any culprit found to be involved in these disturbances and identified as such by either the police or clubs should be subject to a lengthy ban from attending football matches."

Barnsley, who have accused United fans of causing 'substantial damage' at the stadium, are also launching an investigation into the violence.

A Tykes spokesman said: "A complaint has been made to the police and we will be taking a look at CCTV footage before we can comment further.

"Scene of crime officers are down here now goingthrough the north stand and we're proceeding with our own investigation as well.

"It's a hell of a mess down there. Doors have been kicked in, tills have been damaged and there's food and drink everywhere.

"It looks like a swamp in one of the bars."

England : St Austell FC - FC Newquay FC - 21/10/2009

Source : dailymail.co.uk

Football captain's red-card rage as he climbs into the stands to attack a fan

When the red card was brandished during a fierce local football derby, a red mist descended on footballer Lee Whetter.
As the St Austell skipper left the pitch, he climbed into the grandstand and tackled jeering Newquay fans.
In scenes that recalled Eric Cantona's infamous assault on a Crystal Palace supporter 14 years ago, the 27-year-old barged his way through the crowd and grabbed hold of an opposing fan who had been laughing at him.
Whetter put supporter Mark Charles, 48, in a headlock before raining punches on the stunned victim.
The fan's friends then tried to pull him off and a mass brawl broke out involving up to 20 supporters - including a woman with a toddler.

Whetter was playing for St Austell in Cornwall against local rivals Newquay in the South West Peninsula League Division One West.
But he was given a second yellow card for a reckless tackle. Rather than head for the dressingroom and an early bath, he stormed the grandstand.
The player was immediately stripped of the captaincy and told by his manager that he would never play for the club again.
But there has been no police action as the fan he attacked did not make a formal complaint.
Speaking yesterday, Whetter said: 'I want to apologise to everyone at the game, my actions were totally unacceptable.
'My emotions got on top of me, I don't know what came over me, I am going to be writing to the FA as I was not in the right frame of mind.'

He now faces disciplinary action along with St Austell Football Club - who face expulsion from the league for the ugly scenes on Sunday.
St Austell manager Andy Dingle said Whetter had 'no future' at the club and he has been suspended.
He said: 'I treat this incident very seriously and at this moment in time I cannot see that Lee Whetter has a future with St Austell football club.
'Lee Whetter was sent off, he lost his cool and reacted to a couple of idiots in the stand.
'I tried to stop him, but he knows what he's done.'
Lisa Hampshire, who was cradling a newborn baby, tried to restrain the player seconds before he started grappling with fans.

She said: 'I've never seen anything like this. Our baby is only nine-weeks-old and has been to every match since she was born.
'I felt really intimidated when he came over. I just wanted to get myself and my baby out of there.' The brawl was finally brought to an end when Newquay's centre-back Sam McKune diffused the situation in the Poltair Park ground.
Newquay manager Jim Hilton said: 'Our supporters are very vocal and we're all passionate about football.
'It was a cracking game and a cracking win but sadly it will all go by the wayside.'
South West peninsula league secretary Phil Hiscox the FA were investigating the fight.
He said: 'St Austell have been reported to Cornwall FA by the Referee, the County FA will presumably instigate charges and once those are issued it will be up to those accused to respond to those charges.'
St Austell police inspector Stuart Gibbons said that no complaint had been made to them by any individual but should they receive any relevant information they would make inquiries as appropriate.
The game ended with Newquay winning 4-3.

Yobs involved in Cup match violence will be tracked down, pledge police - 28/10/2009

Source : Yorkshire Post

MANCHESTER United fans who caused thousands of pounds damage at Barnsley's Oakwell ground will be tracked down and punished, senior police said last night.
Visiting supporters caused mayhem at half-time in the Carling Cup tie on Tuesday night, severely damaging several refreshment kiosks and brawling with riot police.

Three staff who were attempting to serve fans were forced to lock themselves in a store room after the trouble started, and club bosses said parts of the north stand were wrecked.

Chief Insp Shaun Morley , who was in charge of the police operation at the match, said: "Before the match there was nothing to suggest we would see that level of violence and disorder.

"Obviously we had been through all the scenarios and we managed to quickly and effectively bring the situation under control.

"The violence was triggered when some fans started to take things from the refreshment stalls without paying. This led to the staff in the stalls trying to close, which then angered a number of supporters."

Two Manchester men, aged 22 and 24, were arrested for public order offences, while another aged 26, was arrested for theft. They were still being questioned last night.

Chief Insp Morley added: "We are now conducting a very thorough post-match investigation, and other fans who were involved in the trouble will be robustly pursued by our officers."

Another man, aged 32 and also from Manchester, was arrested for coin-throwing, while three Barnsley fans were arrested after running on to the pitch.

A Barnsley FC spokesman said: "The club is working closely with South Yorkshire Police and any persons found to be involved can expect a lifetime ban from Oakwell Stadium.

"The club would also press for the full use of the law against anyone identified in the events."

Police release photos of West Ham & Millwall thugs - 29/10/2009

Source : ExtraFootie

Police have released photographs of 66 suspects they believe were involved in the rioting which marred West Ham United's Carling Cup clash at home to arch rivals Millwall in August.

A typically feisty East London derby exploded into violence when fans invaded the pitch causing the match to be stopped on numerous occasions.

Now the police are working with the general public to identify the supporters who not only stormed the pitch, but also rioted outside Upton Park, as well as those who may have thrown objects during the much publicised clashes.

In addition, a 43-year-old male was stabbed outside the ground prior to kick-off and Police have released descriptions of a group of up to 11 men they suspect were involved in that particular attack.

In total 41 people have been arrested so far, although Detective Chief Inspector Richard Tucker, who is leading the inquiry, hopes that the newly released photographs will lead to future arrests.

"The level of disorder witnessed that night was absolutely unacceptable and not at all in the spirit of what football matches are all about," he affirmed.

"We are not talking about minor offences here, but a hardcore of individuals who were intent on causing violence and destruction," he added.

The unsavoury incidents consolidated the view that hooliganism is still inherent in English football, and aware of this, the FA have promised to get to the root of the trouble especially after West Ham striker Carlton Cole alleged that he was racially abused.

"I heard it but it’s football. I don’t care. I might be as strong as a gorilla but I’m not a monkey," he said dejectedly after the game.

UEFA deducts 3 points from Dinamo Zagreb for fan violence in Europa League - 30/10/2009

Source : The Canadian Press

UEFA has deducted three points from Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League because of fan violence during a match last month.

The governing body of European soccer also ruled Friday that the team has to play the next two games behind closed doors. The team is scheduled to face Ajax next week and Timosoara in December.

Croatian soccer officials expressed dismay with the ruling, particularly because it likely will knock Dinamo Zagreb out of the competition.

UEFA said its decision followed "serious crowd disturbances" at Dinamo Zagreb's away match against Timosoara on Oct. 1.

"The three-point deduction is effective immediately and is taken from the total number of points achieved by Dinamo Zagreb in Group A," UEFA said.

Dinamo officials say they will appeal the ruling.

Dinamo director Damir Vrbanic said they "didn't expect that UEFA will punish our club so harshly, because our club is not responsible" for the fans' behaviour.

"Those responsible are the hooligans who call themselves Dinamo fans, while they put to shame both the team and our state whenever Dinamo plays abroad," Vrbanic said.

He expressed understanding for UEFA's decision, saying the problems in Timosoara "were obviously the last drop that spilled over UEFA's glass of patience."

Croatian fans have become notorious for their violent behaviour.

Last year, the national team was fined US$27,700 by FIFA for fans' racist chants during a match against England.

Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor pledged her government will no longer tolerate fan violence, adding that "those savages will not get the message" as long as matches and TV coverage aren't suspended following incidents.

German court upholds stadium ban for fans suspected of violence - 30/10/2009

Source : The Canadian Press

Germany's supreme court ruled Friday that fans suspected of violence can be banned from stadiums even if there is no evidence of their direct involvement in any acts of aggression.

In a benchmark ruling, the court said being a member of group with a history of violence is enough ground for clubs to exclude such fans from their stadiums.

The ruling rejected an appeal by a Bayern Munich fan with a season ticket who was banned from attending games after his group of fans was involved in an altercation with supporters of MSV Duisburg following a game in March 2006.

Although he was never charged, the fan received a two-year national stadium ban.

The German football federation welcomed the ruling, saying the possibility of a nationwide stadium ban was an "important preventive measure to ensure security at stadiums."

Between 2,900 and 3,000 fans are currently covered by the stadium ban in Germany, according to the football federation.

Police sorry for West Ham football riot actors blunder - 31/10/2009

Source : Telegraph.co.uk

Police have apologised for a blunder in which actors from football hooligan film The Firm were mistakenly included in 'wanted' pictures of fans caught in West Ham v Millwall riots.

It has emerged that a file of 66 pictures of those caught up in the violent clashes, made public in a bid to identify the rioters, accidentally included stills of actors from the film.

Police used a Sky News report to capture images of fans fighting at the Carling Cup clash in August but officers turned off the sound from the report and so failed to realise it included clips from the movie.

The Metropolitan Police said: ''We wish to apologise unreservedly to those affected.''

Among the actors who faces were included in in the 'wanted' line-up was Paul Anderson, who plays Bex in the film.

The error was described by Yard insiders as a ''bad day at the office'' for those responsible.

Scotland Yard said: ''Six images in individuals who were not involved in the violence were mistakenly included. These images appear to have been taken from a motion picture.

''We wish to apologise unreservedly to those affected. We are going to be actively trying to contact those people to offer our apologies.''

A 43-year-old Millwall supporter was stabbed during the violence in and around West Ham's Upton Park ground on August 25. Police have arrested more than 40 people so far.

The Firm, which was released last month, is set in football hooligans' 1980s heyday and is about a young man who joins a ''firm'' of thugs.

Vertigo Films, which made the movie, told The Sun: ''We are delighted our scenes are so realistic people can't tell the difference between them and real events."

Hibernian - Aberdeen - 31/10/2009

Source: forum (http://www.hibs.net/message/showthread.php?t=165356-

certainly looked like it as when I arrived at London Road coming up the walk there was fighting going on. the ********s where singing CCS and that they were the baby crew. One Aberdeen fan looked to be out cold. Cowardly barstewards.

when I got to the station I went into the bar and was speaking to Hibs and Aberdeen fans and one said the boy was sozzled through the drink but I doubt it myself.

Was running late today and got off the train at twenty to three and went out the back enterance to the station as I walked up Calton Road I was met by a large police presence surronding about sixty Aberdeen casuals. it looks to me that all the trouble is on the way back. i certainly won't be taking my six year old to games if this is the case.
