Bosnia: Posusje - Igman Konjic - 24/10/2009

Source: AFP

Players arrested after attacking referees in Bosnia

Twelve players of a Bosnian league football team were arrested overnight for attacking three referees after a match played in the southern town of Posusje, national radio reported on Sunday.

Players and fans of the Posusje team attacked referees after the end of the the Muslim-Croat Federation's First League match against Igman Konjic on Saturday.

The players were angry over the referees' decisions during the match that ended scoreless, the BH Radio 1 said.

The referees were admitted to a Posusje medical facility and were released shortly after. It was not clear whether the incident was ethnically related.

The unprecented attack took place three weeks after a 24-year-old fan was killed in a clash of supporters of Bosnia's Premier League rival teams.

Following the 1992-1995 war Bosnia remains ethnically divided and violence during major football matches occasionally occurs.

The war, that claimed at least 100,000 lives, pitted the country's Croats, Muslims and Serbs against each other.

Bosnia is split into two semi-independent entities -- the Muslim-Croat Federation and the Serbs' Republika Srpska -- linked with weak central institutions.

PSG fans clash with police after postponement

Olympique Marseille and Paris St Germain supporters clashed on Sunday after their Ligue 1 game was postponed and the whole PSG team quarantined when three players were diagnosed with H1N1 flu.

Police officers said several people had been injured and one person would undergo leg surgery after being hit by a car. There was no serious damage.

"Police arrested a dozen fans who will appear before a court as quickly as possible," local police chief Philippe Klayman told reporters.

"Small groups of fans wanted to fight each others and we had to react quickly. The French League could have made that decision yesterday so that many PSG fans would have stayed home. We were presented with a fait accompli."

The police had been deployed in numbers because the match, which was scheduled for 2000GMT at the Stade Velodrome, was regarded as a high-risk game.

Police sources said clashes also erupted at the main rail station where PSG supporters were boarding trains to go back to Paris.

Klayman said PSG fans travelling back by bus ransacked motorway services in Peypin, north of Marseille. Three people were detained.

Nearly a dozen people were injured after violence broke out between rival fans on Sunday following the postponement of Paris Saint-Germain's French league match at fierce rival Marseille after several PSG players contracted swine flu.

Police prefect Philippe Klayman told reporters in Marseille that "about ten people" had been arrested following the clashes.

One PSG supporter was hit by a car and was hospitalized with a broken leg while a police officer was slightly injured.

A third PSG player was diagnosed with swine flu on Sunday and the French league decided to postpone the game following advice from its medical commission. No new date for the match has been decided but Marseille coach Didier Deschamps asked the league to reschedule it on Wednesday.

The violent incidents between Marseille and PSG fans started in downtown Marseille. Police used tear gas to stop the clashes, while about 60 Parisian fans were kept apart from home supporters near Marseille's old port area. Further incidents were reported near the train station.

Earlier in the afternoon, about 100 PSG fans-some of them wearing shirts emblazoned with the Kop of Boulogne emblem used by the hard core supporters-started a fight, forcing police to intervene.

PSG president Robin Leproux said his club was working with Marseille's security officials and police to help Parisian fans return to the capital as soon as possible.

"As we speak, there are no serious injuries, but a lot of minor injuries," Leproux told a news conference.

Matches between Marseille and PSG are regularly marred by violence off the pitch, and special security measures were in force in and around the Velodrome stadium.

Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier called the decision to postpone the game "late and skimpy."

"Let's hope I won't have to call it a dangerous decision before the end of the evening," Dassier said, referring to violence.

French Sports Minister Rama Yade urged Marseille and PSG officials to speak responsibly "while police forces are still deployed to maintain public order.

"Everybody has to respect the decision (to postpone the game)," Yade said. "The time is for preventive action and caution, not for controversies."

On the medical front, PSG players and staff members will be quarantined for the next 72 hours to avoid any risk of new infection.

The league said it wanted to avoid any risk of contamination "including on the opposing team and to avoid any serious medical complications that could occur."

It had initially said Saturday that the game would go ahead despite the first two swine flu cases-Ludovic Giuly and Mamadou Sakho-being diagnosed.

"The League made its decision today when it could have been yesterday, but there are medical circumstances," Klayman said. "If the match had been canceled yesterday, a majority of fans would not have made the trip."

Six Fans Stopped By Police Before Roma-Livorno

The police halted six supporters from both teams from entering the Stadio Olimpico for various reasons...

Six fans were prevented from entering the Stadio Olimpico in Rome for various reasons yesterday afternoon, for the clash between Roma and Livorno, according to the sporting news agency ANSA.

Five Giallorossi fans, and from visiting supporter were halted from watching the match between the two clubs, which surprisingly ended 1-0 in favour of the Amaranti.

Two Lupi supporters allegedly attempted to enter a section of the stadium without a valid ticket, whilst another two were caught with illegal substances in their possession.

A 60-year-old Livorno fan was arrested for trying to use a ticket attributed to a female supporter.

All parties were in breach of the DASPO law, introduced in 1989, which aids in stopping crowd violence.

Millwall: Lions to ban sick top yob - 26/10/2009

Source: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/2698996/Lions-to-ban-sick-top-yob.html

MILLWALL have vowed to ban for life the fan who taunted Leeds by wearing a Galatasaray shirt.

The Lions are trying to find the yob who also made stabbing gestures to visiting fans during Millwall's 2-1 win on Saturday.

Millwall chief executive Andy Ambler said: "Another fan was ejected and arrested for waving a Turkish flag.

"We didn't see the man wearing the Galatasaray shirt, but we will try to identify him from CCTV and photographs and if we do, he will be banned."

Leeds fans Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were knifed to death before a European tie at Galatasaray in 2000.

Despite the sick taunts by a small minority of Millwall fans and a couple of seats thrown by Leeds fans, the powderkeg match at The Den passed off relatively peacefully.

Police made just two arrests while four fans were ejected. Ambler added: "They were the lowest figures for this fixture for many years."

French football league boss defends late decision to call off Marseille-PSG - 26/10/2009

Source : The Canadian Press

French football league president Frederic Thiriez denies that postponing Marseille's match against Paris Saint-Germain at late notice was the catalyst for widespread violence erupting in Marseille's city centre.

Fans of the bitter rivals had running battles after Sunday night's game - scheduled for 9 p.m. local time and televised on cable TV - was called off about six hours before kick off because PSG players Ludovic Giuly, Mamadou Sakho and Jeremy Clement had contracted swine flu.

That meant thousands of fans were able to mingle in the city centre.

"Claiming that they (the incidents) are linked to the postponing of the match is intellectual fraud, unfortunately these fights were prearranged," Thiriez told sports daily L'Equipe on Monday.

Nearly a dozen people were injured, according to Marseille police chief Philippe Klayman, and reports Monday said 16 had been arrested following the clashes outside Marseille's main train station and the nearby Vieux Port (Old Port) area.

The late cancellation played straight into the hands of those looking for a fight, with PSG's notorious hooligan element heavily involved in downtown clashes. French reports before the match spoke of prearranged fights over the Internet and a higher level of threats than usual.

"There is only one person responsible and that is the president of the French football league (Thiriez)," Philippe Pereira, speaking for a section of PSG's supporters, told LCI television on Monday.

Pereira said Thiriez was playing with people's safety by cancelling so late. Pereira said he arrived with other PSG fans by train at Marseille's Saint-Charles station and that the violence began almost immediately outside, with police ill prepared.

Thiriez defended his decision by saying it was based on advice from the LFP's medical commission.

"What would people have said if the match had been maintained and the whole Marseille squad had been infected (with swine flu)?" he told L'Equipe. "There would have been an outcry."

The LFP initially said Saturday that the game would go ahead despite the first two swine flu cases, Giuly and Sakho, being diagnosed. It called the match off after another case, that of Clement's, was detected Sunday.

Clement travelled on the plane with the rest of the squad.

No new date for the match has been decided but Marseille coach Didier Deschamps wants it on Wednesday. PSG players and staff members have been quarantined for a 72-hour period to try and prevent any new infection.

Police used tear gas to break up the fighting, with one newspaper capturing a fan throwing a knife at rivals.

Early Sunday afternoon, about 100 PSG fans - some wearing shirts emblazoned with the Kop of Boulogne emblem of PSG's hooligan fringe - started fighting with Marseille fans.

French football hit rock bottom three years ago when PSG fan Julien Quemener was shot and killed by an off-duty policeman protecting a Jewish fan surrounded by a hate mob, after PSG's UEFA Cup match against Hapoel Tel Aviv.

PSG has long harboured a far-right element, many of whom converge in the Kop of Boulogne section of Parc des Princes.

Despite pledges at French government level to stamp out football violence, problems persist.

Before last season's UEFA Cup match between PSG and FC Twente, around 250 hooligans from PSG and their Dutch rivals fought in the city's historical centre in broad daylight, with Christmas shoppers running for cover, and again later that night outside Parc des Princes.

PSG's hooligan fringe has been highly active since the early 1990s, with incidents in Paris against Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow, and Galatasaray.

With their team having failed to qualify for Europe this season, PSG's hooligans have targeted away games at Marseille, Nice, Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Montpellier and Bordeaux.

PSG hooligans fought with Montpellier fans on trams and in the streets around Montpellier's stadium on the opening day of the season, with one PSG supporter losing an eye.

Cyprus : AEL Limasol - APOP Kiniras-Peyias - 24/10/2009

Football hooligans cause havoc in Peyia

FOOTBALL hooligans caused havoc in Peyia in Paphos late on Sunday night, following a football match between AEL Limasol and APOP Kiniras-Peyias.

Fires were deliberately set in residential areas, vehicles were damaged, beer bottles were hurled into gardens, villa windows were smashed and graffiti was sprayed onto garden gates.

Peyia residents Terry and Janet Boat, one couple who were victims of the mayhem, were sitting down for a family dinner, when they saw and heard the swarm of supporters heading towards the stadium.

Although the noise was extreme, with fans letting off a continuous air siren, they weren’t unduly concerned. They said there had never been any trouble at football matches at the stadium in the past.

“Later we were watching TV and I thought I could hear the sound of rainfall, but then our dog started barking madly so we went outside to investigate. We then realised the crackling sound was being made by a number of fires,” said Janet.

She said the corner of their road was ablaze and she saw another five fires burning along the same street.

“We then noticed one of our outside lights had been destroyed, there were just wires hanging out and there was broken glass from beer bottles everywhere, which had been thrown into our garden.”’

She also noticed that graffiti had been daubed on the boards of their gate, and numerous windows had been smashed in the house opposite.

“It took my husband hours to clean up all the debris from the fires which had blown into the pool. We have lived here for five years and this sort of thing has never happened before.”

She added: “The police have been this morning taking photos and they assured us that the mayor was coming for an inspection trip himself, to see the extent of the damage.”

The fires were set close to the home of Boats’ neighbour, Barry Allington who said: “We noticed the flames at the top of Spyros Kyprianou road which leads to the Peyia stadium at around 7.30pm on Sunday evening. There was a lot of noise from the fans and traffic in the area, so we thought we should take a look.”

According to Allington, about three metres from his neighbours villa a huge fire was raging on a piece of wasteland, which was ‘tinder dry’.

“We were concerned that the blaze was about to catch their hedge, so I helped them get out their hose and eventually extinguish the fire,” said Allington.

He also noted that more fires had been set all along the road.

“I would say I saw another six or so blazes. The scrubland was full of dry weeds and it was lucky that it wasn’t a very windy evening or we would have been in real trouble,” he added.

Allington didn’t see who set the fires, but said that about five minutes after he tackled his neighbours blaze, a fire truck and police in riot gear arrived.

“I think they had been working on the fires further up the road,” he said. ’I know a lot of people were very frightened by what happened, and some people had the windows of their homes smashed.”

Allington also said they had never seen that kind of problem before in Peyia but now many people were concerned about the future because they local football team were now in the top league and playing bigger teams. So maybe this could happen again,” he said.

Following the incidents, Peyia police arrested an 18-year-old man from Limasol. Police reported that a gang of youths, including the 18-year-old, set fire to dry scrubland outside the grounds and also set a fire inside a plastic bin. According to police, two cars and a fire truck were also damaged after the match, and prior to the game a 19-year-old national guardsman from Limasol was arrested for swearing at a policeman.

A spokesman for the Peyia team declined to comment on the incident. APOP Kiniras-Peyias beat AEL Limassol 1:0.
