Millwall to protest over Budapest violence - 01/10/2004
Source: AFP
English club Millwall are to complain to UEFA about the security arrangements at the stadium of Hungary's Ferencvaros after violence marred the two sides' UEFA Cup clash.
Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis said Thursday he had feared for his safety as people sitting in a VIP area were bombarded with coins and other objects.
The English club will also demand that UEFA act over the racist barracking of their black players Paul Ifil and Mark McCammon.
"Even as a kid I cannot remember it being as bad as that. It was like going back into the dismal time of football that we all try to forget," Paphitis said.
Millwall have made huge efforts to eradicate a hooligan and racist element from their own support and Paphitis said the 3,000 fans who travelled to Hungary should not be blamed for the violent incidents.
A total of four Millwall fans were stabbed in pre-match clashes, according to the British Foreign Office.
The most seriously injured fan was admitted to intensive care but was no longer in a life-threatening condition by Friday morning, according to doctors treating him at a Budapest hospital.
Around 60 Millwall and Ferencvaros fans clashed in downtown Budapest, with riot squads using tear gas to restore order.
After the match, which Ferenvaros won 3-1 to advance to the group stage of the competition, there were also clashes between Hungarian and Czech supporters who had apparently been attracted to Budapest by the prospect of trouble.
A total of 12 fans were taken into custody on Thursday -- eight Hungarians, two British, and two Czechs.

UEFA charge Ferencvaros after fan violence - 01/10/2004
Source: Reuters
UEFA has charged Hungary's Ferencvaros after their fans threw missiles and shouted racist abuse in Thursday's UEFA Cup tie against Millwall.
Two of the London club's supporters are in hospital after being stabbed in clashes before Millwall's 3-1 first round second leg defeat.
A spokesman for European football's governing body said on Friday it had opened a disciplinary case against Ferencvaros as a result of missile-throwing and racist abuse.
UEFA said the case would probably be dealt with on Thursday with a decision on possible punishments, which could include a fine or stadium closure, expected the same day.
Czech side Banik Ostrava have also been charged after fighting in the stands and a lack of segregation during their 1-1 second leg draw with English side Middlesbrough, who went through 4-1 on aggregate.
The British Embassy in Budapest said the stabbed fans were in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Millwall chairman Theo Paphitis said he had visited the two men.
"I have serious concerns about a number of issues surrounding this tie, including the provocation our supporters were subjected to inside the ground," Paphitis said in quotes carried by the club's website on Friday.
"Missiles were being thrown at us, our players were subjected to racial abuse and there was a lack of security where it was needed."
Paphitis, whose club have tried to shed a reputation for hooliganism, said he would be making his feelings clear to UEFA.
Ferencvaros coach Laszlo Csaba told his club's website: "(We) would like to obtain the names and addresses of the (injured) fans so that the club can send them presents."
He also defended the behaviour of the home fans.
"The Hungarian team applauded the British supporters, just like they had done in London in their previous match," he said.
POSSIBLE PUNISHMENTS
Millwall were playing in European competition for the first time after qualifying as FA Cup runners-up. The 3-1 defeat followed a 1-1 draw in London, giving Ferencvaros a 4-2 aggregate victory.
Budapest police said in a statement they had started legal proceedings against 12 people as a result of clashes in the Hungarian capital. Two of them are English fans who were also taken to hospital, but are not the two most seriously hurt.
Of the remaining 10, two are Czech and eight are Hungarian.
Budapest police estimate between 1,500 and 3,000 Millwall fans travelled to the match. The club had a ticket allocation of 1,500.
Ferencvaros were recently fined for crowd trouble at a Champions League qualifier against an Albanian side. Their games against local rivals Ujpest are regularly marred by violence.

Ferencvaros fined over Millwall match trouble - 08/10/04
Source : Reuters
Hungarian champions Ferencvaros have been fined 38,500 euros (26,600 pounds) by UEFA for the trouble at their UEFA Cup match against Millwall nine days ago.
A disciplinary hearing of the ruling body was told that Ferencvaros supporters directed monkey chants towards Millwall's players and that Millwall fans had been subjected to aggressive behaviour inside the ground, UEFA said on its official website.
The fine also took into account the fact that Ferencvaros had five players yellow-carded in the match and that their fans set off flares, which is against UEFA rules.
Friday's hearing did not deal with the stabbings of four English fans that took place in Budapest city centre before the first round, second leg match which Ferencvaros won 3-1 to advance 4-2 on aggregate.
In another ruling on Friday UEFA fined Czech team Sparta Prague 32,000 euros (22,120 pounds) for the racist attitude shown by some of their supporters at their Champions League match against French team Olympique Lyon on September 28.
Monkey chants were directed at some Lyon players, UEFA's disciplinary body heard. The fine took into account the fact that Sparta had been sanctioned on three previous occasions for similar conduct by their fans.
Another Czech team, Banik Ostrava, and English club Middlesbrough were fined 26,000 euros (17,980 pounds) and 6,500 euros (4,495 pounds) respectively over the crowd trouble at their UEFA Cup match on September 30.
All the clubs have until 11 p.m. on Monday to lodge appeals against the fines.

Hooligans warned away from match - 02/10/04
source : BBC news
Police have warned hooligans to stay away from a football match between Mansfield Town and Lincoln City.
Saturday's game was classed as a category C match, which means there was a high risk of some disorder. Last time the two sides met at Mansfield, 17 people were arrested and now the police say they will be operating a zero tolerance policy. Letters were also been sent to known troublemakers from the area banning them from the match. Police said they would use new powers to deal with any potential hot spots near the north Nottinghamshire ground. They were ready to use a dispersal order, which covers the area surrounding the Field Mill ground, including Stockwell Gate and Sutton Road.

England - Wales - 09/10/04

WREXHAM SATURDAY NIGHT
A ROWDY mob scoured a North Wales town centre looking for England fans following Wales' World Cup defeat.
One Wrexham pub landlord last night told how Welsh fans tried to smash down his door, asking if there were England fans inside.
Police arrested 23 people for drunk and disorderly and minor public disorder offences.
Earlier, they dispersed a mob of up to 200 people which descended on the town's High Street about 30 minutes after the final whistle.
Some pubs closed for a couple hours after the match for safety reasons.
Paul McCormick, owner of Milliners on the High Street, said: "I shut my doors and kept them shut all Saturday night and only let regulars and people I knew in.
"Just after the match we had people who were trying to kick the door in, shouting if there were any England fans inside.
"The police were very good. There was not much police presence before the match but when it ended they showed up."
A spokesman at Yates in the High Street said a large crowd suddenly appeared and tried to get in.
He added: "We had a cracked window but we had no trouble inside. We were absolutely full at the time and there was a good atmosphere until this happened.
"We ended up closing for about an hour for safety reasons. I don't know where everyone came from, it was very strange."

Six die in World Cup tragedies - ??/10/2004
Source : AFP
African football was mourning the deaths of six people after two World Cup qualifiers ended in tragedy and controversy at the weekend.
In Lome, four people were killed and eight injured when a crowd stampeded following a powercut after the Group 1 qualifying game between Togo and Mali.
In Monrovia, meanwhile, two people died after fans went on the rampage after the Group 1 game between Liberia and Senegal.
The drama in Lome came after Emmanuel Adebayor secured a 1-0 win over Mali to keep Togo on course for the finals in Germany.
An electricity blackout after the game caused panic and spectators were crushed in the rush to get out.
"A total of four people were killed and eight others injured of which three seriously," Togolese health minister Suzanne Aho told national radio.
"Five people who had minor injuries have already been discharged, while those in a serious condition have been transferred to the military hospital."
World governing body FIFA has launched an investigation into the circumstances which sparked the tragedy.
"The global football family is in mourning today for this tragic loss of life," said FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
In the war-torn Liberian capital of Monrovia, Liberia's top football executives denounced the violence which left at least two fans dead.
"These people are hiding behind the football match to achieve their goals," Nyanquoi Boissy, secretary general of the Liberian Football Association, told AFP.
"They are not Lone Star (Liberia's nickname) fans. They are hooligans, mere looters who where waiting for the match to execute their plans."
An estimated 50,000 people crowded into the Samuel Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia to watch Liberia face Senegal.
Stone throwing Liberian supporters delayed the start of the second half and caused a 30-minute stoppage near the end as a hail of bottles, some filled with urine, flew on to the pitch.
It did little to break the concentration of the Teranga Lions, however, who won 3-0 after two second half goals by Senegalese striker Henri Camara.
A rash of looting and vandalism followed the match, sparing no vehicles lining the streets in the war-ravaged capital.
At least two people were killed as a vehicle, trying to escape the angry mob, crashed into a crowd of bystanders.
Police superintendent Chris Massaquoi told AFP that the Lone Star team should be suspended from future international matches. But the LFA said he was in no position to make that decision.
FIFA said they are also looking into seperate reported instances of crowd trouble in other preliminary matches in Africa, Europe and Central America involving pitch invasions (at Botswana v Kenya and Panama v Jamaica), missiles being thrown onto the pitch (Bosnia-Herzegovina v Serbia and Montenegro, Malawi v Tunisia, Sudan v Cameroon and Honduras v Canada) and racist chants (Macedonia v Netherlands).

Den Haag FC - PSV Eindhoven - 17/10/04
Source : BBC news + Soccerway
Insulted ref stops football match
A Dutch referee stopped a football match 10 minutes early on Saturday following racist chants from the fans. Rene Temmink blew the final whistle after fans of the first-division home team ADO The Hague began insulting him and singing anti-Semitic chants.
It is the first time a game has been called off following new legislation to clamp down on insulting chants.
"I think it's clear to everyone that a lot of borders were crossed," said Temmink after making the decision.
"I won't take this, this is unacceptable."
PSV Eindhoven was leading ADO The Hague 2-0 when the match ended on the 80th minute.
The Dutch Football Association is also investigating an incident last month when ADO The Hague fans chanted insults at the fiancee of one of Ajax players, a Dutch actress, during their home encounter.
Uefa action
The Bulgarian parliament adopted a law this week banning swearing, fighting or what it calls vulgar gestures at football matches and other sporting events.
Anyone caught swearing could be jailed for up to 15 days or fined up to $300.
Football is the most popular sport in Bulgaria but correspondents say an increasing number of matches have been disrupted by violent incidents both inside and outside stadiums.
The European football federation, Uefa, has been concerned for some time about the level of racist abuse at football matches.
The pan-European Football Against Racism in Europe (Fare) network - one of Uefa's charity partners - is co-ordinating nearly two weeks of action from 14-26 October against racism in and around football stadiums across the continent.
************************************************************ PSV Eindhoven’s Holland Casino Eredivisie match at Den Haag on Saturday was abandoned with ten minutes left to play after the referee was being insulted by the home fans.
With PSV in control with a 2-0 lead thanks to two goals by Johan Vonlanthen, referee Rene Temmink took exception to insults being hurled at him by the home supporters. Under new rules, the referee had every right to then stop the game.
Temmink contacted mayor Dick Deetman who completely agreed with Temmink and also suggested that the match be abandoned at that point. It is the first time a match has been stopped for such a reason.
We were approx 40 top lads at the train statin waiting for Lyon lads but we must admit we had not real intention...just watching the Lyon escort arriving and why not trying something??? In the same time, riots occured between Magic Fans/Green Angels and french CRS who charged the group several time. Many missiles were threw at them. Finally, they used gunshots and teargas to restore order. Three different mob took the same direction with the aim to see the Lyon escort but each time we were charge by CRS. no way for us to join the escort (about 500 policemen to escort them). In the city centre, a few skirmsishes erutped with independents Lyon fans.

We arrived early in the journey with approx 20 lads. We spotted in a pub no far away from the stadium. We tried to join Rennes lads by phone, with any answer, so, we took the road to find them. At 3.30pm we finally had an off on a small park. Some minutes later, Rennes lads arrived (20); we charged but only 2/3 of them stood their ground. One hour later, as we are in another pub, Rennes lads came back fr another off. Another time they lost but the fight took place for 5 minutes without any police presence.

Round 1: local advantage only with fists and outnumbered.
***
We took the direction of the stadium. At 7pm Parisians gave us a phonecall for another off in a park near the away stand. We were not 'happy' of this proposal but finally, we took the road to them. We were 30. Both mobs contront each other for 2/3 minutes but no one tried to attack. Finally, we charged but only 20 stood their ground for a short 1minute fight, as stewards and police forces arrived and Parisians threw missiles at us.
Round 2 : a little Paris advantage
**********************************
PSg lad view:
We arrived in Nantes at 2.30pm...after a few drinks we took the road to the off. A the bottom of the street we saw 30/40 lads wo were watching us walking the street. After some minutes, we recognized locals and they requested a clean fight in another place. After many phonecalls, other lads joined us in a pub. At this time we were 15. We thought it could be possible to have a firm of approx 30/35 and on Nantes side it could be 70/80. As we were speaking together we saw Boulogne Boys chased by FCN lads so we confront these last ones. A violent and clean fight took place without any weapons. If both 1st lines were on top it could be impossible to control 2nd lines who used belts, chairs etc etc...As police forces arrived both sides stopped activities. At the end of this fight, we could say it's a drawn....
As we decided to join the stadium, we were 32 so we decided to made another action at the end of the game, but finally we spotted in 35 in a park waiting for locals (60/70). Both sides were in front of each other but stewards and police forces arrived after a few punches were exchanged when FCN lads charged us. Finally, they retreated....

Football hooligans get 3-year ban - 20/10/2004
Source : BBC news
Three Mansfield hooligans have been banned from all football matches across the country for three years.
They went before Nottingham magistrates after applications for Football Banning Orders were made by Nottinghamshire Police.
Frederick C*******, 29, Mitchell H***, 21, of Clipstone, and Jason T*****, 26, of Church Warsop, all pleaded guilty to football violence charges.
Police said they have plans to apply for bans on another 30 hooligans.
'Back to court'
The conditions of the three-year order mean they are banned from attending UK football matches and travelling abroad for England international games.
Police said the idea was designed to prevent their involvement in football violence.
Insp Greg Drozdowski said: "We now have 58 problem individuals on Football Banning Orders, which is a great result for Nottinghamshire Police and genuine football supporters alike.
"We already aim to put a further 30 hooligans before the courts by April of next year.
"I have sent out a further warning to those few individuals who have tried to get around the constraints of their bans.
"We will be taking you back to court to extend the constraints of your Banning Orders and will be making you pay all costs incurred."
