Police make 150-mile trip to charge Celtic fans over pre-season football violence - 01/10/2010

Source : thisislincolnshire.co.uk

THREE Celtic fans have been charged with public order offences after Lincolnshire Police officers travelled 150 miles to find them.

Football intelligence officers yesterday made the trip to Carlisle and charged Shaun Conway, 20, Gary Watt, 23, and Jordan Dever, 26, with public order offences.

The charges were brought in relation to violence and disorder which broke out in Lincoln when Lincoln City played Celtic in a friendly match on July 24.

It is alleged they were involved in a brawl at the Golden Cross in High Street.

And it has brought the number of people arrested from the day to 27.

Lincolnshire Police football intelligence officer Andy Pearson spoke to the Echo on the journey back to Lincoln.

"We are proactive in making arrests after the fact and people should realise they may not get away with it just because they were not arrested on the day," he said.

"They were identified from enquiries and CCTV footage and we did stop checks shortly after the disorder."

The men, who are all from the Glasgow area, agreed to travel to Carlisle to meet the officers.

This was because English officers do not have the power of arrest in Scotland.

As reported in the Echo, 20 arrests were initially made when trouble blew up in the High Street.

Imps and Hoops fans were arrested for a mixture of assault and public order offences.

And dozens of police officers and riot vans were present for most of the day. In August, Stewart Stanley admitted to kicking another man before trading punches with him during the High Street violence.

The Scotsman was fined £335 at Lincoln Magistrates Court, but spared from receiving a three-year football banning order.

He was spotted kicking a man who ran past him.

Stanley, who is from Glasgow, pleaded guilty to a public order offence and was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £15 surcharge.

Chief executive of Lincoln City Football Club, Dave Roberts, said: "We have always worked quite closely with Lincolnshire Police and the courts on a zero tolerance approach.

"As a result Lincoln City has always been and stays a safe, family environment.

"Lincolnshire Police are very supportive of us."

Southampton FC - AFC Bournemouth - 02/10/2010

Source : thisishampshire.net + Dailyecho.co.uk

Six arrests after violent scenes with Bourrnemouth and Southampton fans

SIX people were arrested and five thrown out of St Mary's as violent scenes marred Saints' victory in their first league match against neighbouring Bournemouth in more than half a century.

The arrests were for public order related offences as trouble flared between rival fans after yesterday afternoon's 2-0 win.

Police say Cherries fans tried to break through the stewards barrier inside St Mary's as the final whistle was blown. Both sets of fans then spilled out of the ground where Bournemouth fans were contained in the car park and began shouting and goading police.

Dozens of officers, backed up by stewards, brought the situation under control before Cherries fans were escorted en masse away from St Mary's towards Southampton Central Station.

However, numerous incidents broke out along the way. The first happened at the corner of Britannia Road at its junction with Northam Road, where Saints fans had gathered.

Further along the route, at the junction with Above Bar Street, trouble broke out once again when both sets of fans came together. Police dogs had to be brought in to get the situation under control.

At least 90 officers were on duty for the specially planned operation around the game. Last night they confirmed more arrests are likely to be made early next week following the trouble.

Al-Ahly (Egypt) - Esperance of Tunisia - African Champions League - 03/10/2010

Source : The Canadian Press + Reuters

Egypt police say 11 policemen injured in violence during weekend Egypt-Tunisia football match

The Egyptian police say 11 officers were hurt when angry Tunisian football fans ripped out stadium seats, threw them about and hurled fireworks into the pitch during a tense weekend match between Al-Ahly and visiting Esperance of Tunisia.

A police report released on Monday says the disturbance took place during the first leg of an African Champions League semifinal played Sunday evening in Cairo. The host Al-Ahly won 2-1.

The police say dozens of Tunisians were arrested after policemen rushed into the stands to stop the fans from rioting.

Egyptian TV carried live footage of half-naked Tunisian fans beating up and kicking the policemen.

Egypt and north African countries have a history of football matches soured by fan violence.

Swedish football clubs threatened by their fans - 03/10/2010

Source : http://www.thelocal.se/29388/20101003/

Players, coaches and referees plying their trade in the Swedish Allsvenskan top flight are increasingly becoming the target of threats from supporters, often from their own clubs, according to a survey by broadcaster TV4.

* Ibrahimovic misses penalty in Milan loss (12 Sep 10)
* Ibrahimovic scores twice in 10-man Euro rout (8 Sep 10)
* Stockholm football club coach quits after threats (6 Sep 10)

Every fifth Swedish football player, almost every third Allsvenskan club official, and every other referee, has been subjected to threats or harassment, the survey shows.

Disappointment over results, and controversial transfers, often lead to supporters directing their ire at their own clubs, not the opposition and their supporters, according to Gothenburg University social psychology researcher, Tore Brännberg.

"There are in fact few fights between clubs these days," he claimed.

Brännberg's understanding of the situation is that the most fanatic supporters, the leaders of the so-called hooligan firms, act as if they were members of religious sects.

"They think differently and see this as their religion, where AIK (Stockholm), IFK (Gothenburg), Malmö or whichever team, is the most important thing in their lives. When they think that something has gone wrong they have to act," he said to TV4's programme Kalla Fakta.

Kalla Fakta in the spring surveyed players and officials with the 16 Allsvenskan teams, as well as Hammarby and Örgryte, both relegated in 2009.

Of the 303 players who responded, 18 percent had been subjected to threats or harassment over the past five years. Among the 81 club officials the figure came in at 31 percent.

Referees however stood for the highest proportion of threats and harassment, with 51 percent of match officials responding that they had fallen victim.

Despite the shift in hooligan tendencies, running battles do occur between supporters of different clubs in the Swedish top flight and as the season drew to a close this weekend police reported several incidents.

Skåne police have reported that around ten people were detained in connection with unrest at a match between high-flyers Helsingborg and Gothenburg club Gais. Three people have subsequently been arrested on suspicion of rioting, aggravated assault and assault.

In Stockholm, a match between crisis-hit Hammarby and Södertälje club Syrianska led to the arrest of 17 people on suspicion of rioting.

Police units were dispatched to the scene, where one person is reported to have been taken to hospital with injuries sustained in the clash.

Earlier in the week AIK were served with a 550,000 kronor ($82,000) fine by Uefa following an incident after a Europa League match in August when a coach carrying players and officials from the Bulgarian club Levski Sofia was attacked with stones and bottles.

AIK's hooligans have cost the club financially on several occasions recently, with a further 140,000 kronor imposed in August after rioting in connection with a Champions League qualifier against Norway's Rosenborg.

Men sought after fan attacked on Manchester train - 05/10/2010

Source : BBC News

Police hunting football hooligans who viciously attacked a West Ham fan on a train in Manchester have released CCTV images of men they want to speak to.

The 40-year-old had boarded a Euston-bound train at Piccadilly on 28 August when he was attacked by a gang of five men, thought to be Stoke City fans.

He was punched 20 times in the head and left with cuts and bruises on his face.

British Transport Police (BTP) said the train had been busy and a small number of fans had seemed intent on trouble.

Det Con Dave Cowan, investigating for BTP, said: "A group of five men singled out the West Ham fan and punched him repeatedly to the head, striking him an estimated 20 times and causing cuts and bruises to his face.

"Following the assault the attackers left the train to catch another service."

He added: "It is vital we trace those responsible as we simply will not tolerate any level of violence on the railway.

"We believe the men captured by CCTV may have key information about the incident and I urge anyone who recognises them, or who has information about the incident to come forward."

The attack happened as West Ham fans travelled home after their game with Manchester United.

The same day Stoke fans were travelling back north after their team played Chelsea.

Ipswich Town - Leeds United - 02/10/2010

Source : TWTD.co.uk

Police are reviewing video footage of an incident involving around 40 Leeds supporters 15 minutes after Saturday’s game at Portman Road. Officers were forced to use dogs to control the group which was trying to force its way from the Leeds coaches in the Cattle Market car park back on to Portman Road.

A police spokesman: “Unfortunately there was an incident after the match where a group of around 30-40 away fans congregated and started to behave in a threatening manner towards other fans and the police.

“Police dogs were called in to support officers already on scene and the group was contained. Officers who attend football matches are aware that these situations can arise and it was dealt with quickly and professionally.

“The vast majority of fans were able to enjoy a good day out and a good game of football.”

Five arrests were made during the afternoon, while 27 supporters of either club were ejected from the ground.

FC Anzhi Makhachkala - Spartak Moscow - 03/10/2010

Source : mn.ru

During Sunday’s game rival fans clashed on the terraces of Anzhi’s stadium, while members of the hosts’ “Dikaya Divisiya” (Wild Movement) fan group displayed a banner accusing Spartak fans of fascism.

After the match the Spartak team bus was pelted with stones and a supporters coach was fired on with traumatic weapons.

Picture the scene. Rocks and stones are bouncing off the isolated bus in which you cower.

You're a stranger in a foreign land, thousands of miles away from home, surrounded by people with whom one's first meeting was a matter of weeks ago.

With barely the ability to mouth a muffled greeting in the native tongue, you have just watched a riot unfold an hour earlier, crowds of manic people flinging chairs and seats and projectiles at another selection of agitated people.

Welcome to Russia. Or, more precisely, welcome to Dagestan, one of its more volatile regions. Aiden McGeady sits on the Spartak Moscow team bus and his adrenalin is pumping.

His team colleagues pack their kit-bags tightly against the window as a feeble buffer lest the windows smash as the bus driver nervously attempts to extricate himself from the maddening, local lunatic fringe of FC Anzhi supporters.

Welcome to your new life. Sitting in a tranquil Dublin hotel suite, McGeady recounts this gripping tale, then surveys the past three months of his professional life.

"It's been going great for me," he beams.

The weekend witness to some raucous rioting in Russia's toxic northern Caucasus remains undeterred. "During the game, we had a corner and I was making my way up that side of the pitch and I could see over amongst the fans," McGeady continues.

"There was a big riot. I don't think it was the police and the Spartak fans, I don't know what happened. And then I saw the Anzhi fans running up to the Spartak fans, tearing out seats and throwing them at the Spartak fans.

French league: Both matches between PSG and Marseille to be played behind closed doors - 07/10/2010

Source : The Canadian Press

The French football league has ordered both matches between fierce rivals Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille to be played behind closed doors this season.

Both games last season were marred by violence, including the death of one PSG fan.

When there were major clashes in Marseille city centre between the teams' supporters, Marseille fans were banned from attending the return match, but factions of PSG fans — long opposed and from different parts of the stadium — fought each other. The ferocious street battles led to the death of the PSG fan.

The French league said in a statement Thursday that no visiting Marseille fans will be allowed inside Parc des Princes on Nov. 7, and no PSG fans will be at Stade Velodrome on March 19.

"The objective of this measure, which the public authorities were naturally informed about beforehand, is to ensure the best security for everyone after the serious incidents of recent seasons," the LFP said. "This decision goes hand in hand with the policy of fighting against violence undertaken by the state, the French league and the clubs."

Fury after easyJet boot 50 Scotland fans off flight to Prague over claims of drunkenness

ANGRY Tartan Army fans were left stranded after an airline refused to fly them to tonight's game in Prague.

The group of around 50 supporters were told they were "too drunk" to board the EasyJet flight due to take them to the crunch Euro qualifier.

But the Record was inundated with calls last night branding the decision "a disgrace".

The fans were supposed to fly from Amsterdam to Prague at 7.20pm last night.

They claim they were told the flight was delayed and were then rounded up and had their boarding cards confiscated. The flight eventually left at 11.43pm - without the 50 Scots fans.

Craig Tweedie, 40, from Paisley, said: "It's a disgrace - some of us have not drunk for two years. We don't know what to do. We have no euros - all our money is in Czech currency.

"I have been travelling to away games for ten years and know how to behave. I have never been treated like this before."

EasyJet said the situation was "still ongoing" when contacted by the Record last night.

A spokesman said: "Around 50 Scotland supporters were warned about their conduct.

"The matter was discussed with the pilot and it was decided they were too drunk to fly."

Stuart Fairweather, 20, from Falkirk, said: "We were not drunk or daft. Everyone in a kilt or Scotland top was told they were not flying.

"Police told us it was because four people had been causing trouble."

Trainee lawyer Fraser Gillespie, 21, from Larbert, was left stranded with a group of six friends at Schipol Airport.

He said: "We had a couple of drinks but no more than that.

"Everyone in my group was sensible and coherent and certainly not a risk to safety.

"I have been to many away games with the Tartan Army and never encountered anything like the treatment we've had here."

He said his group would attempt to get to Prague today by rail to catch pre-booked flights home.

Mark Scott, 34, from Gorebridge, Midlothian, said: "We are all here on the internet desperately trying to find a way to get to Prague.

"It was EasyJet who gave the boys vouchers to buy drink.

"There are a lot of guys here and they have done nothing wrong. They were not abusive or anything like that.

"Now the guys here have a problem getting to Prague. They can't just go home. A lot of them are booked on flights back to Scotland from Prague."

The Airbus A319 plane with 90 passengers on board was due to land at Prague at 2.30am this morning.

Pair served with football ban orders after brawl - 08/10/2010

Source : Express & Echo

TWO hooligans have been banned from football matches after a mass brawl in Exeter city centre.

Martin Bishop, 39, of the city's Howell Road, and Stuart Wheeler, aged 33, of Holland Road, Exmouth, were served with the orders after they were involved in a fight with rival support-ers.

The pair were also sentenced for a public order offence in connection with the incident.

Police say the case sends out a strong message to other football yobs who cause violent disorder in the city.

And they have pledged to continue their crackdown on organised football hooliganism in Exeter.

The bans mean the pair cannot attend any organised football match or travel to any city hosting an Exeter City game.

They are banned from an area within Exeter city centre when the Grecians are at home. And they will have reporting conditions placed on them when England are playing.

Bishop and Wheeler appeared before magistrates in Exeter yesterday to be sentenced for their part in the fight.

The incident took place during the evening of Exeter City's scheduled match against Bristol Rovers on Tuesday, February 23, which was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch.

A huge fight between rival groups erupted in Longbrook Street and spilled out into the road.

CCTV footage of the brawl was shown in court and cars could be seen reversing out of the road to avoid the fight.

Prosecutor Alison Jordan said: "At around 7.20pm, CCTV showed a group of around 15 to 20 men walking down Longbrook Street towards the Black Horse. On approaching the pub, they were seen to place scarves over their faces."

Magistrates imposed a six-year football banning order on Bishop and a three-year order on Wheeler.

The court heard that Wheeler, who works in finance and lives with his parents, had previously been involved in football-related disorder in 2006.

And police said he had been given a two-year football banning order, which expired in 2008.

Bishop was escorted from jail for the hearing. He is serving a prison term for robbery, and is due for release in July next year.

The court heard that Bishop was on prison license when he committed the public order offence and was subsequently recalled to jail.

Defending Bishop, Peter Woodley said: "Mr Bishop accepts he was walking along the street and was in drink, but he wasn't looking for trouble.

"It is quite clear from the CCTV that one of the Bristol supporters goaded him and he obliged. There is a stand-off and Bishop runs in.

"He is happy to concede that what he did was stupid."

Representing Wheeler, David Battaliou said: "There was a degree of provocation. But he denies being one who put a scarf over his head.

"He is very embarrassed about his behaviour – shocked really. He has had to explain it to his family. He is a professional person."

Speaking after the case, PC Stephen Millar, of Devon & Cornwall Police's football intelligence unit, said: "We are very pleased with today's result.

"There are a minority of Exeter City fans who are actively engaging with football hooliganism.

"We will be targeting them and the football banning orders issued today send out a strong message that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"When football violence like this is ignited, innocent people can get pulled into it.

"It can be very distressing for people to witness."

Bishop was sentenced to eight weeks in prison for the public order offence and Wheeler was ordered to carry out 130 hours unpaid work for the same offence.

Police arrest three Derby County fans in football violence probe - 09/10/2010

Source : Derby Evening Telegraph

THREE Derby County fans have been arrested in connection with violent clashes which broke out at the end of a match against Leeds.

Police say rival supporters fought outside Elland Road football stadium after the first game of the season on August 7.

The three men, aged 26, 34 and 42, were caught on CCTV and have now been arrested. They were held after police raided houses in Derby.

Officers have now released pictures of two more men they want to speak to about the fighting and are appealing for the men, or anyone who knows them, to come forward.

Superintendent Gary Parkin, head of operational policing in Derby, said the clashes created a "frightening and chaotic situation" for other supporters.

He said: "The Rams supporters who attended the first game included many families and children.

"After the match, outside the ground, they were faced with two opposing groups of so-called fans who clashed with each other.

"Football clubs around the country have made great improvements in security in and around the grounds but there are still a small minority of individuals who seek to cause problems on match days."

After the game, which the Rams won 2-1, police launched a "thorough investigation" into the disorder.

Supt Parkin said: "As a result of our enquiries three men have been charged and there are two more men we would like to speak to.

"I have issued their photographs in an effort to trace these men. I would like them to come forward and speak to us but alternatively we would like to know who they are."

Supt Parkin said West Yorkshire Police had also arrested a number of people during and after the match.

The three men arrested in Derby have been charged with affray and released on bail.

They are due to appear in court later this month.

Rob Hulse scored the first goal for the Rams in the match.

Luciano Becchio equalised a few minutes later but a Kris Commons' penalty just before half-time sealed the victory.

It was the first time in four seasons that Derby had beaten Leeds at Elland Road.

Fans in Central Station fracas await sentence - 09/10/2010

A WASHINGTON man was among 15 football fans in court after violent city centre clashes.

Student Christopher Mustoe, 22, was part of the Newcastle United gang which confronted Sunderland supporters at Newcastle Central Station in August last year.

The SAFC fans were being escorted by police to the Metro, after returning from a pre-season friendly with Hearts in Edinburgh.

Ugly scenes broke out, with an 18-year-old defendant clutching a baton and another hurling a smoke bomb as the sides traded insults on the concourse.

Fifteen NUFC fans appeared at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday, after admitting violent disorder.

Prosecutor Christopher Knox said Mustoe had acted as a “spotter” for the NUFC mob and was captured on CCTV going down to the Metro platform to see if the Sunderland contingent had arrived.

Mr Knox said: “The confrontation which was to follow was comparatively limited because the police were involved, but clearly it was frightening.”

Defending Mustoe, of John F Kennedy Estate, Tom Moran said: “Mr Mustoe is someone of good character. He is a university student in the third year of his studies.

“His family are very close, but have also suffered a number of bereavements and a close relative becoming very seriously ill.”

Mr Mustoe added: “He accepts his part to the offence of violent disorder. He had a considerable amount to drink and fell to the influence of others. He had no knowledge of any other weapons or smoke bombs and when the police asked him to leave he did.”

Judge Beatrice Bolton adjourned sentencing for two weeks and extended bail.

Also admitting the same offence were Ian Chisholm, 48, of Westacres Crescent, Benwell; David Cook, 22, of Cromer Gardens, Gosforth; Darren Fryer, 39, of Wallinfen, Leam Lane, Gateshead; Bryan Heron, 42, of Clayton Street West, Newcastle; Adam Ivison, 23, of Murrayfields, West Allotment, North Tyneside; Joseph Mattison, 51, of Acomb Street, Gateshead; Scott Mooney, 18, of Valley Road, Blyth; Adam Nesbit, 41, of Tribune Place, Gateshead; Noel Renton, 33, of Aydon Walk, West Denton; David Routledge, 18, of Swarland Road, Blyth; David Taylor, 22, of Sinclair Gardens, Seaton Delaval; Lee Wales, 23, of Prince Consort Road, Gateshead; Stephen Wales, 44, of Woodford, Gateshead; and Lewis Comber, 18, of Elsdon Avenue, Seaton Delaval.

About 20 SAFC fans deny charges against them and will be tried in February.

Mother defeats gang of football yobs by staging railway track protest until staff who refused to intervene FINALLY call police

When a gang of drunken football yobs began hurling foul abuse at a mother and her five-year-old son on a train, she presumed someone would intervene.

But the driver refused to call the police or stop the train and the guard was nowhere to be seen.

Faced with giving in or standing up to the 30-strong group, Lisa Robinson decided to take them on.

When the train reached her station she got off and stood in front of it, refusing to move until the driver called police.

Rail company Arriva then terminated the train there, leaving the abusive fans to make their own way home.

Yesterday Mrs Robinson said: ‘It was a terrifying experience, but I’m glad I did it. It was a victory for ordinary people.’

The 41-year-old mother had been on a day out with her husband Peter, 61, and their son Harry to celebrate his fifth birthday.
The couple, civil servants from Ystrad Mynach near Caerphilly in South Wales, had taken Harry to Cardiff before returning home on the Arriva service.

As they boarded the two-carriage train on Saturday September 25, they realised it was full of drunken Cardiff City fans who had just seen their team beat Millwall.

The family tried to ignore the shouting and swearing hooligans, but when the train arrived at a station and the gang began abusing a woman on the platform, Mrs Robinson decided to intervene.

‘I walked down to the group and asked the main perpetrator to stop swearing,’ she said.

‘They then turned their abuse on me, calling me a ‘‘dyke’’ and a string of four-letter words.

‘Nobody said anything. I was terrified. I wanted to alert the guard, but there was no way into the next carriage so we were completely trapped.

‘Then they swore at my husband, who was sitting with Harry, and taunted him about his age. By the time the train set off again I was crying and shaking.’

She was so frightened she pulled the emergency handle at the next station.

But she said that when the driver got into the carriage, he simply reset the alarm and went back to drive the train, ignoring her husband’s request to call the police.

Mrs Robinson added: ‘The train carried on for another two stops, with the abuse continuing, until it arrived at our station, Ystrad Mynach. When I got off I had Harry in my arms and he was crying. The driver completely ignored us and told us to take it up with the guard. We had not seen one for the entire journey – I think he had been too frightened to intervene.

‘It was then I decided to take direct action. I spoke to the driver who again ignored me – he wouldn’t even take his sunglasses off to talk to me.

‘So I handed Harry to Peter, got on to the tracks and stopped the train from leaving the station. Some of the football yobs got off to give me more abuse and take pictures of me on their mobiles.’
She said the guard then appeared and asked her to move, which she refused to do.

She eventually moved after the station controller promised her he would not move the train and that the police would be called.

Two British Transport Police officers arrived and, after discussions with railway officials, the train was terminated.

Mrs Robinson said yesterday that she was glad she had made a stand and would do it again.

‘I think too often these yobs are allowed to get away with it,’ she added. ‘When the thugs started kicking off, one woman said to me that I should accept it as it was just the world we live in. But I refuse to live in a society where this sort of thing goes unpunished.

‘Arriva sent me flowers and apologies, but what they really need to do is plan to make sure these things don’t happen. They knew there was a football game on and should have laid on extra staff. Instead, they had one guard who I’m convinced was hiding in the other carriage.

‘I still can’t believe the driver ignored my husband when he asked him to phone the police.’

Peter Northcott, head of stations at Arriva Trains Wales, said: ‘We take all complaints very seriously and I personally contacted Mr and Mrs Robinson on the day of this incident. A full investigation is taking place with the British Transport Police.’

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: ‘Inquiries, including viewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses who were on the train, which was travelling between Penarth and Bargoed, are ongoing.’

Football violence: pledge by clubs

THREE people were arrested after ugly scenes marred the end of Scarborough Athletic’s FA Vase replay against rivals Bridlington Town.

Violence erupted in the car park of the ground at Queensgate, Bridlington, and one local man was knocked unconscious and taken to Scarborough Hospital following the clash on Tuesday night.

Both clubs have condemned what happened, saying those involved were not true supporters.

But there are fears the incident could affect future matches between the clubs, who play in the same league and share the stadium, and are due to meet again in six weeks’ time.

Although Bridlington Town chairman Peter Smurthwaite was not at Tuesday’s game, the two clubs have issued a joint statement. It said: “The chairmen and officials of Bridlington Town AFC and Scarborough Athletic are appalled at the trouble caused by a minority of so-called supporters outside the ground following the match last night.

“Several individuals involved in the trouble have already been identified, with three arrests having been made, and both clubs will be working closely with the police over the coming days to identify further individuals involved.

“Anyone identified as involved in the incident will be banned on a permanent basis from the Queensgate Stadium and clubhouse.

“This incident was caused by a minority who we believe are not true supporters of either club and we urge any genuine supporters who witnessed the incident to forward the relevant details to either club or the police so that the perpetrators can be identified and dealt with as soon as possible.”

There had been no sign of trouble inside the ground, with fans exchanging banter throughout the match, and at the first game between the two sides on Saturday.

But after the final whistle, around 20 officers and half a dozen police vans were sent to the car park to break up the clashes.

A police spokesman confirmed that three people were arrested. A statement said: “Trouble was reported at the ground at 9.44pm and police officers who were already in the area were called in to resolve the problems.

“The ambulance service attended to treat a 20-year-old Bridlington man who had suffered injuries. He was taken to hospital in Scarborough for treatment.

“A vehicle was also allegedly damaged in the car park at Bridlington Town Football Club.

“Police officers arrested three people for public order related offences – a 33-year-old Knaresborough man, a 24-year-old Bridlington man and a 30-year-old Scarborough man.

“The 33- and 24-year-old men are still in police custody at this time and the 30-year-old has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.”

The spokesman confirmed there had been a “substantial” police presence at the ground.

Both sets of fans have spoken out against the violence on their clubs’ online forums.

On the pitch Scarborough Athletic won the match 3-1, after a 2-2 draw in the first encounter.
