Ajax Fans Riot In Amsterdam Over Police Strikes
Ajax fans angry some of their fixtures have been postponed due to police strikes set off flares, attacked buildings, and clashed with officers Sunday in Amsterdam after a demonstration.
Images on local media showed Ajax fans grabbing bicycles and barriers and marching towards the police HQ in the Dutch capital before officers intervened to restore order.
"The situation is unstable at the police HQ in Amsterdam. Ajax fans are vandalising the building and police vehicles," Amsterdam police said in a statement on X.
"Despite several warnings, a group continues to seek confrontation. The mobile unit (elite riot police) is now carrying out charges to drive them away," police added.
Fans had gathered earlier Sunday to protest that three of their matches had now coincided with police strikes over pensions.
Authorities ruled the "Klassieker" match between Ajax and Feyenoord should not go ahead without a police presence. Sunday's match against Utrecht has also been postponed.
Another match, away at NAC Breda, did go ahead despite police being absent due to the strike.
The F-side supporters' group said fans were "completely fed up that Ajax games are continuously the target of this sort of police action."
Ajax are furious they are already three matches behind in the championship and games have to be replayed at inconvenient times.
The Dutch giants are seeking to bounce back from last year's horror season that at one point saw them propping up the Eredivisie table.
Their two matches so far have resulted in one win and one loss.
Police have denied Ajax is being deliberately targeted. Officers were also on strike on Saturday during a major climate demo in The Hague.

Play suspended during Cagliari-Napoli as objects thrown
Ultras began to throw objects at each other across the barriers and railings, then the Cagliari ultras made it impossible to continue with a series of fireworks and smoke bombs hurled into the penalty area with their own goalkeeper.
Play was halted for at least six minutes and players from both teams appealed to the supporters to calm the situation down.

Cyprus FA criticized after more violence at top-flight game again raises calls for away-fan ban - 16/09/2024
Source : https://www.newsday.com/
The Cyprus president called out the national soccer federation on Monday for shirking its responsibilities in helping to stamp out hooliganism and violence.
President Nikos Christodoulides said everyone must live up to their obligations in the fight against soccer violence but singled out the federation and its president George Koumas for “hiding behind” their own autonomy.
“They have responsibilities, we warned them about all of this but they continue to hide,” Christodoulides said.
His remarks came after authorities called off a first-division match between crosstown rivals Apollon Limassol and AEL Limassol on Sunday when hundreds of AEL fans clashed with police and rushed the stadium gates without undergoing either a mandated search for concealed contraband or a check of their tickets, according to police.
Fans exiting the stadium again clashed with police, throwing rocks and other projectiles which resulted in three officers sustaining injuries.
Police arrested four people, including two 17-year-olds, as they tried to flee in a car inside of which investigators found a metal bar and balaklavas. Police spokesman Christos Andreou said officers also found a bag near the stadium containing Molotov cocktails and a powerful flare.
The controversy revolves around a government push to extend a full ban on all away team fans that was imposed last year to curb violence. The Cyprus Football Association, instead, ruled that for this season a maximum 800 away team fans would be allowed. On Sunday, Andreou said more than 1,000 AEL fans showed up for the game.
Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis told the state broadcaster earlier Monday that the FA was warned of impending trouble and to steer AEL fans — as away team supporters — clear of the stadium.
But Hartsiotis said the FA's Koumas assured that all would go smoothly after consulting with the rival teams' presidents.
Police and the justice ministry say new draft legislation that would empower law enforcement to decide on banning all away team fans from matches deemed as high risk would go a long way in combating the problem.
In a statement, the Cyprus FA condemned the violence and said appropriate punishments would be meted out. But it defended its decision to allow AEL fans in the stands because the trouble was strictly fans clashing with police and not the direct consequence of away fans fighting with home-team supporters inside the stadium.
“We don’t believe it’s right that every instance where undesired actions happen should be used as a reason to ban away fans,” the FA wrote.
The state broadcaster said the FA has called an emergency meeting of all team presidents for this Friday to discuss the issue.

Cyprus: Ael-Apollon match called off amid violent clashes, three police officers injured - 15/09/2024
Source : Cyprus-Mail.com
Clashes between Ael fans and police ahead of a highly anticipated but ‘high risk’ game with Apollon prompted authorities to call off the match.
The decision was met with only more violence however as fans began throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at police. Officers responded by using the water canon Aiantas however at least three members of the force were injured as a result of the fracas.
Earlier in the evening police chief Stelios Papatheodorou said a bag of Molotov cocktails and torches were found.
He slammed Ael fans saying “they refused any inspections and sprayed police officers.”
Strict orders had been issued on how fans should enter the stadium and what protocols should be followed. As fans began arriving ahead of the game, Papatheodorou said Ael fans in particular started kicking up a fuss and began behaving aggressively towards police.
It is understood some fans slipped through security as police were trying to deal with the clashes.
As a result, everyone was ordered to evacuate the stadium and go through security again before entering.
A group of fans complied with police orders and left the stadium but not everyone did.
As such, police could not guarantee safety and called off the match.
Stakes were already high, with Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis earlier in the day calling on fans to behave and engage in sportsmanship rather than turn the stadium into a fighting ring.
He described the game as ‘high risk’.
Nonetheless, a clash began between police and Ael fans at the Alphamega stadium in Limassol before the game began.
Hundreds of police officers and riot police were deployed to the stadium, amid concerns the situation may escalate. A crisis management centre had also been setup on site.
Stadium violence has been a recurring issue authorities had to deal with. Earlier this year the Cyprus Cup football derby between Apollon and Ael set to play out at Alphamega Stadium in Limassol, was cancelled due to incidents involving both sets of fans.
Papatheodorou said he would not resign over the violence which unfolded.
