Juventus fans banned after city derby riots - 02/10/2007

Source : DPA

Authorities have banned Juventus fans from attending next weekend’s away match against Fiorentina at the Artemio Franchi stadium, repubblica.it reported Tuesday.

The the ban was imposed following the riots that took place outside Turin’s Stadio Olimpico before the city derby between Juventus and Torino late Sunday.

Police arrested 30 hooligans who attacked police officers trying to keep them separated. A Sky TV cameraman was assaulted and some cars damaged in the clashes.

Italian authorities also ruled that only season-ticket holders Sunday will be allowed to watch Torino’s home game with Genoa side Sampdoria.

No Napoli fans will be allowed at Milan’s Giuseppe Meazza for Saturday’s game at champions Inter Milan, a match that is considered high risk.

At the weekend, Napoli played in an empty San Paolo stadium against visiting Genoa as a sanction for the hurling of objects on the pitch a week earlier.

Three football fans bailed - 02/10/2007

Source : Swindon Advertiser

THREE Bristol Rovers fans have been arrested and bailed for attacking Swindon Town supporters before a crunch match.

Hooligans attacked Swindon fans at the Inn On The Green pub, in Horfield, Bristol, in April, before the clubs met in a crunch end-of-season game.

As reported previously in the Advertiser, Town fans caught up in the violence described gangs of baseball-wielding yobs throwing bottles at them in what appeared to be a premeditated attack.

advertisementThey described how a group of about 20 hooligans stormed the pub's beer garden before the attack .

Three men aged 21, 18 and 17, have been arrested on suspicion of public order offences.

The trio, who are all from Bristol, have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Town footy yob's ban from games - 02/10/2007

Source : Evening Star24

A FOOTBALL hooligan is today banned from matches in England and Wales for three years after being drunk and abusive at Ipswich's last home game.

The banning order against Karl Burgess is the first of its kind imposed in the town this season.

The 26-year-old yob climbed over seats at Portman Road during the Ipswich versus Coventry match on September 22. He then became abusive and made threats to stewards and pushed past police officers to avoid being arrested.

Lesla Small, prosecuting at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court said Burgess, of Rubens Road, Ipswich, had been abusive to stewards and away supporters in the past but now courts have the ability to ban hooligans for three years.

She said: “On this occasion his general behaviour in the club before the match was seen by stewards. He was climbing over seats and was warned to calm down.

“He continued swearing and shouting while there were families around and was then ejected from the football ground”.

She said police officers outside the ground tried to get Burgess' details for intelligence but he was uncooperative and abusive to police.

Burgess, who was under the influence of alcohol and was kicking at officers, was placed in leg restraints on the ground and arrested for using threatening behaviour and for obstructing police.

He pleaded guilty to both charges.

Magistrates banned him from attending any football match for three years and committed him to Ipswich Crown Court for a further hearing tomorrow because his offences breached a suspended sentence imposed for a previous offence.

Burgess will also have to surrender his passport to police when England play abroad as he is also barred from international games as part of the order.

Suffolk police's football intelligence officer Pc Marc Norman, who is based at Ipswich police station, was delighted with the magistrates' decision to enforce the ban.

He said: “I am very pleased with the outcome. I hope this will send a message to would-be offenders that we will not tolerate public disorder of any kind and that we will take them through the courts in a similar fashion.”

High Street bloodbath - 03/10/2007

Source : Bromsgrove Advertiser

BROMSGROVE'S High Street was turned into a bloodbath' when 20 youths, including a group of Cardiff City fans, were involved in a brawl.

The city supporters were travelling back by coach to the Welsh capital from their match at Barnsley last Saturday evening and had stopped for a drink at the Queen's Head pub in The Strand.

Police rushed to the scene following calls from horrified onlookers, who said glasses and punches were being thrown. CCTV captured dramatic images of the incident, which spread to the street outside Threshers off-licence.

advertisementHelen Jones, Tory district councillor for Catshill, who was enjoying a night out and who saw the incident unfold, said: "It was like a bloodbath. Fighting broke out, there was blood everywhere and glass was smashed all over the floor.

"We were inside the Queen's Head and watched through the windows. At one point a man came through the doors of the pub and went behind the bar, saloon style."

Later police reported that there had been no injuries to staff and no complaints had been made by landlord Paul Allin. He declined to comment when approached by the Advertiser/Messenger.

Officers escorted the city fans to their coach, which left the scene shortly afterwards.

No arrests were made. Cardiff City Football Club declined to comment.

It was the second time in less than a week that Cardiff supporters had been caught up in an incident in the area. On September 25 their coach burst into flames on the motorway while the fans were on their way back from their match at West Bromwich Albion.

In a separate incident on Saturday police were called to The Rousler in the High Street at around 7.50pm. Two people from Bromsgrove were arrested, one on suspicion of assaulting police and affray, the other on suspicion of assault and a public order offence. Both were bailed. Police refused to comment on whether the two pub incidents were linked.

Celtic Glasgow - AC Milan - 03/10/2007

Celtic face nervous wait after fan's clash with Milan's Dida

Celtic face the prospect of heavy sanctions from UEFA as the hunt intensifies for the fan who attacked AC Milan goalkeeper Dida.

The Brazilian was carried off during the final minutes of Wednesday's Champions League clash following his brush with a supporter who slapped him in the face while celebrating Scott McDonald's last minute winner.

Celtic could be punished by having their Parkhead stadium closed for several European matches. There is a precident for such action after Inter Milan had to play four matches at the San Siro behind closed doors after Dida was struck by a flare during a Champions League semi-final in 2005.

Denmark were also ordered to play four Euro 2008 qualifiers away from Copenhagen and fined 41,000 pounds after a fan assaulted German referee Herbert Fandel during a match against Sweden in June.

UEFA match delegate Andreas Akkelides confirmed he had seen the incident and would include it in his report. The organisation's communications director William Gaillard said they expect to receive that report by the end of this week.

"One of our prosecutors will look at the document and decide whether to open an investigation," he said. "I don't want to presume anything.

"There is a whole range of possible punishment. But, of course, there are precedents for the same kind of incidents."

Although Milan have insisted they will not ask for the match to be replayed, the least Celtic can expect is a heavy fine for failing to properly control their crowd.

While the Scottish champions await UEFA's decision, they have begun a full investigation into how the supporter was able to evade stewards and police to get onto the pitch.

The fan, who faces a life ban from Parkhead, managed to avoid arrest after running back to the stands and police have started a search for him, while Scottish newspapers are asking readers to identify him.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "An incident occurred during the match. Police are investigating but nobody has been detained at present."

Celtic chairman Brian Quinn admitted there was no excuse for the fan's behaviour but he insisted Dida, who fell theatrically to the turf after the clash, should also come under scrutiny.

"I'm making no excuses for the behaviour and the fan behaved disgracefully," Quinn told the BBC.

"But the contact made with the goalkeeper was minimal. His antics have to be taken into account as well.

"All I saw were the TV pictures. He took a couple of steps after the fan and then obviously made this decision that he should go to ground.

"Unless I missed something, he was carried off on a stretcher for what seemed to be the lightest tap you can imagine."

Celtic striker McDonald is hoping his moment of glory won't be tarnished.

He said: "I hope the authorities are lenient. It would be a tragedy if what happened affected the team."

Report by a Groningen lad.

Wednesday
We were with about 150 lads in a pub.
Singing, having fun, acting crazy,...
Police came bothering us so we went to some other pub further away.
No problems with OB there, just singing and having beers.
More and more of our firm started to arrive so our group grew 250 lads strong.
Then came the new that scarfers got attacked by Fiorentina Ultras (70-80).
Somebody was stabbed in the face with a bottle.

So we all went back...
Marching through the city with the police behind us.
Fiorentina got a few beatings from us along the way.
Then back to our pub where we got surrounded by OB.
Everybody got checked .
After that most of us were free to go.
During and after the riots they made about 30 arrests,
but they were all released the next day.

Thursday
During the game Italians were provocing all the time.
Groningen broke some fence and used the bars to break the plexiglass.
As soon as the hole appeared, all the Italians who were provocing earlier, ran away!
Then a police pointed his gun through the hole and wrecking time was over.

Fiorentina playing Groningen tonight at 9 pm, possible arrival of 600 violent Dutch fans worries public Authorities

Last year at this time the Fiorentina was battling its way back from a series of upsets. Not only did they start the season at -19 points, but they also had the entrance into the prestigious Champions League tournament stripped from them due to an alleged involvement in the scandal that shocked the Italian soccer world in the 2005-06 season.

Despite all they had to overcome, the Fiorentina never lost sight of their goals and their determination carried them, one point at a time, from the last position in the classification back up to fifth, qualifying them for this year’s UEFA Cup. They are going to have to call on this same determination to get them through the next couple of days.

Yesterday at 4 p.m. the team held their last practice before the first of the two big games they will be playing in the next four days. Before they compete against their biggest rival in Serie A, Juventus, they will be facing their first European Cup game at home in 7 years.

The Viola is one of 80 teams vying for a place in the group stage of the UEFA cup. The first leg of the two-legged knock out stage was played in Holland against Groningen and ended in a 1-1 tie. The away draw is a positive result for the Fiorentina but non the less, they are expecting a difficult home leg.

Franco Semioli set the tone warning both fans and fellow team mates that Groningen is not a team to underestimate. He added that the goal the Fiorentina scored away will help, but it does not secure that the team will advance. He continued “Groningen will try to attack and the Fiorentina needs to close the spaces and return on the attack.” Coach Ceasare Prandelli, repeated these thoughts “we know that Groningen is a difficult team and we want to pass to the next phase.”

Prandelli has yet to determine the starters for tonight’s much anticipated game. Since the team has been involved in 4 games in the past 2 weeks Prandelli has been rotating players to give them some time to rest. However, in the pre-game press conference he stated that he wants it to be clear the best team will be on the field tomorrow because he respects the opponent and wants to win the game at all costs.

Semioli commented on the large turnover the team has been facing lately saying he sees it as an advantage for the Fiorentina, not only because it gives all of the players a chance to play, but also because the team has so many difficult and important games in such a short time, including the UEFA games. Besides the advantage of fresh legs, the Fiorentina can count on the support of their loyal fans who have spent 7 years anticipating the Viola’s return to European football. 25,000 Fiorentina fans, or the 12th man as they are called in Florence due to the reinforcement they give the team through their chants and songs, are expected to be present for the game.

Prandelli encouraged the fans saying he knows what an important role they play in the games. He went on to say that the fans have been, and will also be tonight, the strength of the team. However, tomorrow night there will be two battles being fought as Groningen fans are ready to put the Florentine fans to the test. Groningen is expecting over 1,900 of their most loyal supporters.

Hans Nijland, the General Director of the Dutch club, confirmed that this is not only a record for Groningen, but also puts pressure on the team and the management to do everything they can to win.

Florentine authorities are worried about public safety as news reports from Holland have hinted that in addition to the fans with tickets, as many as 600 violent fans may be in arrival. This has provoked local authorities to up the security surrounding the game and organize check points at airports, train stations and on the highway to ensure that all of the Dutch fans in arrival have tickets

Police Search For Fan - 03/10/2007

Source: www.sportinglife.com

Police are searching for the Celtic fan who ran on to the pitch and appeared to assault AC Milan goalkeeper Dida during Wednesday night's Champions League match at Parkhead.

The supporter rushed from the stand following a last-minute goal by Celtic against the European champions. He ran across the path of the Brazilian stopper and appeared to strike him.

Dida briefly made to chase after the fan but then collapsed to the ground. He was taken off on a stretcher with an ice pack held to his face.

The supporter carried on running off the pitch after the confrontation.

The fan, whose antics were watched by millions of television viewers around Europe, is believed to have disappeared back into the crowd and was not caught by police or stewards.

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: "An incident occurred during the match.

"Police are investigating but nobody has been detained at present."

European football chiefs at UEFA said they had launched an investigation.

Celtic could face severe penalties from the football authorities as a result of the incident.

Rapid Vienna and Anderlecht fans clash at Vienna train station

About 150 Rapid Vienna and Anderlecht fans clashed at the Westbahnhof train station Thursday as the rival teams met in the UEFA Cup.

No injuries were immediately reported, but police said brawling fans blocked two tramway lines and that broken glass was strewn across one of Vienna's main shopping avenues.

At least 13 people were arrested, authorities said.

Police said witnesses reported seeing some fans vandalize small outdoor drinking establishments and smash car mirrors.

Rowdy groups of 20-30 bare-chested fans were seen drinking beer starting Thursday morning and there was a heavy police presence around Hanappi Stadium.

Police said fans of the two rivals had clashed last month in Belgium and that hooligans were expected to stage a rematch in Vienna.

Champions League - UEFA charge Celtic - 05/10/2007

Source : Eurosport

UEFA have begun proceedings against Celtic following one of their supporters running onto the pitch in Wednesday night's Champions League match against Milan.

The fan ran onto the pitch as Celtic players were celebrating Scott McDonald's last minute goal in the 2-1 victory at Celtic Park and tapped Milan goalkeeper Dida on the shoulder.

The Brazilian gave chase for a few paces before falling to the floor, and was eventually stretchered off with an ice pack on his face, despite minimal contact from the fan.

The SPL champions announced yesterday that they had banned an unnamed supporter for life from all of the club's matches, both home and away.

However, that action will not help the club to avoid UEFA's charge of "lack of organisation and improper conduct of supporters", which will be dealt with at the disciplinary meeting on October 11th.

Milan will also be asked for clarification as to why Dida was substituted, given the unusual circumstances.

Source : News & Star

Eight arrests after United game

Eight people were arrested dozens of teenagers were dispersed from Botchergate by police after Carlisle United’s game against Millwall yesterday.

Ranks of advancing officers herded the group on when they appeared to refuse to move from the middle of the city centre street after gathering following the match.

Shoppers watched as a large-scale operation swung into action, involving officers with dogs, on horseback and with batons, sending the youths scattering into London Road and English Street.

Police chiefs said the Millwall fans and the crowd at the game were well-behaved.

But they said there had been a problem with youths, some aged as young as 12, gathering on Botchergate and Court Square after the game.

River Plate - Boca Juniors - 07/10/2007

Argentine police arrest 150 after River-Boca clash

Some 150 Argentine soccer fans were arrested on Sunday around Buenos Aires soccer stadium the Monumental, where Argentine soccer giant River Plate defeated Boca Juniors 2-0.

Police arrested River fans for breaking drugs laws or parole terms and arrested Boca fans from the La Doce (The 12) hooligans club, when they began fighting over ticket allocations on the away fans' stand. Sunday's security operation involved 1,300 officers, a record for such events.

Doce's members had previously fought a week ago in the Argentine city of Rosario, capital of Santa Fe province, where Boca lost 1-0 to rival Rosario team Newell's Old Boys. Police there arrested Doce's leader, Mauro Martin, and another Doce member, holding them for three days.

Two months ago, gunmen murdered Gonzalo Acro, a member of River hooligans squad Los Borrachos del Tablon (The Stand Drunkards). Rival Borrachos leaders Alan Schlenker and Adrian Rousseau are also feuding.

Bursaspor - Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ Spor - 07/10/2007

Source : Today's Zaman

Violence resurfaces once again in Turkcell Super League

After several weeks of relative calm, soccer hooliganism has again returned to haunt the Turkcell Super League -- this time after the rough-and-tumble Bursaspor-Gençlerbirliği OFTAŞ Spor match on Saturday.

The game at Bursa’s Atatürk Stadium ended one-all, but this result was a far cry from what the Bursa supporters had expected. Actually what really infuriated the home fans was their team’s inability to beat newcomer OFTAŞ which ended the match with 10 men after defender İlhan Eker was red-carded in the 63rd minute.
So after the game irate fans gathered in front of the Kültürpark Stadium, shouting insults and curses at the Bursa administration to protest the 1-1 score and the team’s overall poor performance.

The riot police couldn’t just stand by and watch a group of fans inciting anarchy and disturbing the peace. So they did what was expected of them and moved in to disperse the angry mob. Then all hell broke loose as the fans fought back fiercely.

Things went from bad to worse when the police tried to cuff one of the fans as he lay on the ground -- and the situation quickly disintegrated into a free for all. Bursaspor administrator Kani Kudu arrived at the scene in a bid to stop the arrest of that fan, but instead got into an altercation with the officers. He was arrested and taken to the police van. However, Kudu was set free after a short while and whisked away from the scene. The fans later dispersed one by one preventing things from turning even uglier.

Yes, no one was injured nor was any property destroyed, but this fracas was still not a good omen, in fact it was a sign of bad things to come. Last season television beamed pictures of soccer violence into millions of homes across the country almost every weekend -- and the season ended with unprecedented violence in the Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derby at İstanbul’s Ali Sami Yen Stadium. Galatasaray was ordered to play its first five home matches this season behind closed doors.

The only notable incident of soccer violence this season was in the opening match between Trabzonspor and Sivasspor at Trabzon’s Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium. Trabzon was also ordered to play five home matches without spectators and declared a 3-0 loser by default.

The hooligans do not want their teams to be punished because they know that the Turkish Soccer Federation (TFF) has declared zero-tolerance on hooliganism. So they are now trying to outfox the federation by carrying out acts of hooliganism not in their stadiums, but at city squares and parks. And this new strategy makes the federation’s job all the more difficult: Who is it going to hold responsible for unruly incidents at city centers and squares?

However, we advise the federation not be cowed into inaction. It should square up to the new challenges in tackling these evil acts of hooliganism, gangsterism and violence. Club officials and players also have their responsibilities. They must learn to win with honor and lose with grace.

Moreover, whatever needs to be done to cure soccer's festering sore has to be done. Tougher sentences, more police, more bans on clubs and troublemakers -- whatever it takes.
