| Hooligans in court of Sunday’s football violence - 25/10/2007
Source : Cyprus Mail
TWO LIMASSOL men were yesterday detained in police custody in connection with the trouble that erupted at Sunday’s football match between APOEL and Apollon Limassol in Nicosia.
The two men, aged 22 and 29 and both from Limassol villages, were arrested on Tuesday night at their homes after they were recognised by footage taken from the CCTV cameras inside and out the GSP Stadium.
Local champions APOEL were leading 2-0 against Apollon Limassol at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia when referee Stelios Tryfonos called off the match seconds before the halftime whistle after fans began hurling objects onto the pitch.
Two police cars outside the stadium were damaged after the match and an APOEL supporter was taken to hospital with slight injuries.
The referee’s report after the game laid the majority of the blame on Apollon, whose fans showered APOEL goalkeeper Jane Nikoloski with rocks, flares, plastic tubes and even a Swiss army knife.
During the suspects’ remand hearing yesterday, Sergeant Costas Sariyiannis told a Nicosia judge that both men were under investigation for illegal gathering at a sports stadium, causing public affray and preventing a football match from taking place.
The 22-year-old was also under investigation for carrying a weapon into a sports stadium. “In the CCTV footage, the two suspects are seen with other people taking part in the violent scenes,” said the investigator.
“The faces of another five individuals are also seen in the footage and efforts are currently underway to locate them.”
According to Sariyiannis, the 22-year-old has so far denied everything and the 29-year-old has reportedly confessed.
A Nicosia court yesterday remanded the two suspects in police custody for five days.
Police are set to take around 40 statements in connection with the trouble at Sunday’s game.

| "U" Cluj - Steaua Bucharest - 27/10/2007Source : Mail Steaua fan viewWe was in Cluj at 13:00 about 50 boys from Stil Ostil, Banda Ultra' and Ultras. We meet with other 20 boys from Bucharest (North + South) who go with train. Mostly, young people of 23-26 years old. In the front of their stadium, we meet with Cluj fans. We was about 70 boys (more or less) and they was the same number or more. First attack came from our side and they run away. Short contact between 15-20 boys from us an 10-15 from Cluj. Steaua fans win thist firs round. After that, police force came and use dogs to separete this two sides. Steaua fans regroup and attack again ultras from Cluj. Again, they don't fight with all boys. They run and about 3 or 5 minutes came about 100-120 boys. In this time we have problems with police force in the park. Nothing happend again because was more police officers there. Some rocks and bottles was used. Respect ultras from Cluj who stay and fight with us. 2 people from Steaua was injured. One of them was beaten by Cluj fans and other was hit in the head with a rock. I guess they have more injured fans after that. We win this fight without problems right in the front of their stadium. In the stadium, other problems. When "U" Cluj score, ultras from their side throw other rocks in us. Police force came quickly and calm the situation. ******************************************************************* Source : Mediafax VIDEO: http://www.mediafax.ro/sport/incidente-intre-suporterii-universitatii-cluj-stelei-inainte-mec.html?1689;1015081 ******************************************************************* Source : Mail Steaua fans before the game : End of fight with Cluj fans and police intervention. | Riot police ready for rowdy Polish fans - 28/10/2007
Source : Irish Independent
GARDA public order units will be on stand-by around Richmond Park for the friendly between St Patrick's Athletic and Wisla Krakow of Poland, whose fans have a reputation for being among the most violent in the world.
The evening match in Dublin on November 13 is being regarded as a huge money spinner for the Inchicore club, who hope to attract thousands of Ireland's Polish population.
Eight fans of Wisla Krakow and their neighbours and bitter rivals, Cracovia Krakow, were stabbed to death last year in separate incidents of soccer-related violence, some linked to neo-Nazi elements.
In one incident, in March last year, a football supporter was dragged from his car and stabbed to death, in what was regarded as an orchestrated plan to murder a rival fan.
The 21-year-old from Krakow was killed after a derby match between the two local clubs -- a fixture so violent that it is known as the "holy war" in Poland.
During last summer's World Cup, German organisers regarded the threat of Polish hooligans as far more serious than that posed by English, Dutch or Italian fans.
Football violence is endemic in Poland, and fans from Krakow's two main clubs are the most violent, with knife attacks commonplace.
Attacks on police, who are always in riot gear backed by water cannon and tear gas, are also a regular feature of football in Poland.
Senior gardai have already begun liaising with their Polish counterparts to put together a security plan for the upcoming Dublin friendly.
The shocking level of violence in Polish football is far worse than during the heyday of hooligan violence in Britain during the early 1980s.
Poland's football-related murder rate makes it the most dangerous place in the world to watch a match.
After one game, between Polonia and Legia, in April of last year, more than 1,300 riot police armed with CS gas and rubber bullets fought a running battle in the streets of Warsaw. A month later, Wisla and Legia fans were involved in another major riot, which may have involved as many as 5,000 fans, in Warsaw which left 54 Polish police officers injured, three seriously.
A total of 12 hooligans were hospitalised and more than 200 fans were detained during the riot and 100 people required emergency medical treatment. The Krakow hooligans were recently featured in the award winning series Ross Kemp on Gangs.
It is understood that the riots shown on the TV programme, which was broadcast last week, alarmed some St Pat's officials, who then contacted the visiting club for reassurances.
Wisla Krakow told St Pats that they did not expect their fans to travel from Poland for the Dublin match in any great numbers.
However, with daily flights from Poland to Dublin and a huge number of Polish nationals resident in Ireland, many of them supporters of the two rival Krakow clubs, gardai are taking the security threat extremely seriously.

| Leeds United - Millwall FC - 27/10/2007Source: http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk Fans clash with police who kept Leeds United & Millwall hooligans apartFootball yobs repeatedly clashed with police in ugly scenes before and after Leeds United's home game with Millwall. Watch video here. Trouble flared at about 2.15pm on Saturday as three busloads of away fans pulled up near the Billy Bremner statue outside Elland Road. Millwall hooligans on board the double deckers smashed windows and kicked open doors in a bid to goad hundreds of watching Leeds fans into a confrontation. Windows and doors on the buses were put through by yobs on board as they tried to goad watching Leeds fans into confrontation. Mounted police responded by charging at some of the United followers, forcing them away from the buses. Officers formed a cordon across Elland Road to keep home supporters at bay while travelling fans were taken into the ground. One onlooker said: "Some of the Millwall lads on the buses looked like wild animals. " They were leaning right out of the top decks with their arms outstretched, screaming abuse. Their faces were contorted with hate. "The Leeds supporters were no angels either, though. A lot of them were obviously waiting there for Millwall to arrive." After the game police spent 40 minutes clearing the area around the stadium while the London club's fans were held inside. Mounted police again made a number of charges at Leeds supporters massed near the Bremner statue. They were backed up by dog handlers and officers with batons as a police helicopter hovered overhead. Bottles and other missiles were thrown by some troublemakers in the two car parks either side of Wesley Street. Once calm was restored the away supporters were bussed away under heavy police escort. There were also reports of skirmishes between rival yobs near Leeds City Station before the game. The buses wrecked by Millwall fans were local First Bus vehicles laid on to get them from the station to Elland Road. Twelve arrests were made during the disorder at the ground. This season's match was thought likely to be moved to an early kick-off but, following discussions with West Yorkshire Police, United decided it should start as planned at 3pm. | Gloria Buzau - "U" Cluj - 30/10/2007
Source : Mail
About 3 days ago, Steaua fans beat right in the front of their stadium, ultras from Cluj. After one clear fight with only one winner (Steaua), local fans and Romanian Press say things different.
For today, 25 boys from Steaua - 90% South Side - go to Buzau (110 km from Bucharest) to make this things clear. Ultras from Cluj arrived in Buzau with train and they are only 8 boys + 1 ultras from Petrolul Ploiesti. Ultras from Bucharest wait for them in one tunnel right under the train station. It was the place where Cluj fans go. About 7 boys from our side go in back of the tunnel, 8 stay at the stairway and the rest upstairs.
When they go down, we attack them. No problem and not all people involved in this fight for us.
T-shirts with groups, scarfs and banners is in our hand now from their rucksack.
PICTURES SOON ! | |

| Sydney FC battle injuries, investigation - 09/10/2007
Source : AAP
Under investigation from Football Federation Australia (FFA) on two fronts, Sydney FC are also battling a series of injury dramas ahead of Friday's match in Perth against the Glory.
A spokesman for the FFA said inquiries were continuing into an incident where Sydney FC fans threw bottles at referee Mark Shield following Saturday's 1-0 loss to Melbourne Victory in the A-League clash at Sydney Football Stadium.
"We're reviewing some of the reports from the club from security at the moment," the spokesman said.
"We want to make sure we get it right so we are not rushing into anything."
Sydney FC coach Branko Culina is also believed to be facing possible disciplinary action over post-match comments he made to Shield as the referee left the ground flanked by security.
Shield's decision to red-card Sydney FC midfielder Steve Corica for a high challenge in the 25th minute angered the home fans, with Culina understood to have told the referee after the match: "If the police need to escort you, it's not a good sign."
Culina admitted the A-League needed to give a better performance on and off the pitch.
"That was the disappointing thing about the game on Saturday night. There were 18,500 people and thousands more people watching at home," he said.
"You wanted a good spectacle, you wanted a good advertisement for the game and it wasn't there.
"It wasn't there on the park for various reasons and it wasn't off the park because of the behaviour of some of the fans.
"That was disappointing for the game but that does happen in football, it happens in other sports as well.
"The onus is on us the clubs now to provide entertainment."
Culina had enough headaches on the training field at Macquarie University, with Brazilian Juninho (ankle and shoulder) not taking part and unlikely to play on Friday.
Mark Milligan, Adam Casey and Ruben Zadkovich are on international duty and Corica was handed a two-match ban by the FFA.
"You'd have to say that both (Ufuk) Talay and Juninho are very, very doubtful. Juninho hasn't trained all week and is unlikely to train," Culina said.
"Talay has picked up a flu last night so if it's a virus, he's not going to be right either so it puts us in a dilemma...
"Jacob (Timpano) and (Robert) Middleby are out.
"Jacob can't walk let alone run.
"We might have to borrow at least three players from somewhere else."
Culina is encouraged by the fact Sydney FC are one of four teams in fourth place on eight points, just three points behind the second-placed Melbourne after seven rounds.
"We're still aiming for the top. We're not far away," he said.
"It's difficult to throw too many young players in at the same time, especially away from home, but their opportunities will come and it's up to them to cope.
"But we've still got enough quality players in the squad. They've just got to step up a little bit and lead by example."
