Cyprus: Clashes in Limassol - 15/11/2023

Source : https://cyprus-mail.com/

Clashes between hooligans resembled ‘civil war’ scene

Season 23/24 - November - Page 4 31a9

Shopkeepers and residents in Limassol are continuing to register damages on Friday in the wake of renewed episodes of violence by hooligans.

The latest episode took place around 11pm on Wednesday night, when after a period of several months of relative calm, over one hundred armed hooligans took to the streets near a football clubhouse, attacking each other with rocks, bats, firebombs, and Molotov cocktails, in a scene described by some observers as resembling a “civil war zone”.

Police, meanwhile, are taking statements and combing through videos posted on social media and CCTV footage, however identification of the perpetrators is difficult as those involved had their faces and heads covered.

Anti-riot measures which have been previously proposed to criminalise the wearing of face coverings in demonstrations have yet to be implemented.

Authorities are also re-considering the enforcement, via decrees, of the closure of football fan association clubhouses.

Police had been strongly opposed to a particular clubhouse in Limassol, which had been temporarily banned from operating, to re-open, however, the Limassol municipality overrode police caution and gave permits for two clubhouses to operate as of May 18.

So far no arrests have been made for the incidents in which an estimated 120 men were involved, a car was set on fire and shop windows were smashed.

Police identified two fans at the scene of the incidents, but did not arrest them according to Philenews as the requested issuance of arrest warrants for the two suspects was rejected by the judge.

A 21-year-old man was injured in the street fighting and taken to hospital with a fractured elbow.

Police do not rule out the possibility that there were others injured who did not go to receive care out of fear of being identified.

French authorities ban the presence of Ajax supporters in Marseille ahead of crucial Europa League clash - 16/11/2023

Source : https://onefootball.com/

According to Voetbalprimeur, Ajax will have to do without the support of their own fans in the upcoming Europa League clash at Marseille. Supporters of the Amsterdam club are not welcome in the Stade Vélodrome on November 30, the local authorities have decided.

Last month Marseille’s Ligue 1 match against Lyon was postponed after the Lyon team bus was attacked on its way to the stadium. Lyon boss Fabio Grosso was directly hit in the face and left seriously injured following the incident. Earlier this month, the authorities deemed it unsafe for Lille fans to travel to Marseille.

On Monday, Ajax revealed that they were uncertain whether fans would be welcome at the match against Marseille. The authorities have now banned Dutch supporters from being present in the city centre and the Stade Vélodrome. During the reverse fixture, Marseille supporters were allowed to attend the Johan Cruyff Arena. Ajax could do with the support as they’re currently recovering from their worst ever start to a season.

Armenia - Wales - 18/11/2023

Source : https://www.bbc.com/

More than 30 Wales football fans were arrested in Armenia ahead of the European Championships qualifier.

About 1,200 supporters are in the capital Yerevan for Saturday's match.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) confirmed that 32 fans had been arrested, while the Foreign Office is involved.

South Wales Police officers in Yerevan said all fans had been released without charge and they were trying to find out what happened.

Supporter Lefi Gruffudd described his anger, saying it was a total shock after he was arrested with a group of friends following an enjoyable night in the city.

Another fan suggested about 25 of them were put against a wall and teased about getting six month sentences.

"The three of us were walking back towards the hotel last night quite late and police cars came straight up to us, took us into their cars, arrested us, kept us in custody until 3.30 this afternoon [Saturday]," Mr Gruffudd said.

"They treated us insultingly, no water, no cell, nothing through the night.

"No explanation why we were arrested and we have been asking questions all the time but no answers. We haven't slept at all and we're angry."

He said: "It's a shock, we didn't expect this, we loved the place.

"We were very happy with the people in the bars last night, there was a very good atmosphere but this was a big shock for us all."

Hibs and Celtic hooligans brawl with pool cues and glasses in pub fight - 18/11/2023

Source : https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/

The brawl saw several of the culprits handed prison sentences with witnesses within the pub brought to tears as the two rivalling factions unleashed into a violent frenzy.

Violent Celtic football fans cheered as if “celebrating a goal” after engaging in shocking pub violence with rival Hibernian supporters near innocent bystanders, including mothers and children.

Customers at Gallagher’s Irish bar in Carlisle watched in horror as the men — six Glasgow Celtic followers including twins, and three people backing Edinburgh-based Hibernian — threw missiles and punches.

The Hibernian group had linked up at a nearby pub on Saturday October 23, 2021, with fans of Oldham Athletic, who played at Carlisle United that day, the Record reports.

As the 3pm English match kick-off loomed, the Hibernian /Oldham contingent walked city centre-bound towards London Road, as Celtic fans played pool and drank in Gallagher’s.

Carlisle Crown Court heard CCTV captured all violence which erupted after the two groups became aware of each other’s presence.

One of the nine, Andrew Whitson, whistled with fingers in his mouth having previously held his phone aloft, appearing to take a selfie.

Prosecutor Andrew Evans said there was no evidence of a planned meet but suggested “some pre-existing enmity” between rival supporters.

Kieran Ewing threw a pint glass and his twin, Owen Hughes, brandished a pool cue before the pair, aged 32, fought with Whitson, 39. Michael Morton, 28, had collected pool balls and a cue.

The pub corridor was filled with broken glass, snapped pool cues, balls and “just destruction” in the aftermath, he added. Despite having previously served in the Forces, he was “shocked” by the level of violence.

Distressed and shocked customers included a man aged in his 70s who began to cry, mothers and a child of five to seven years who was removed from the premises.

Lawyers for the men — who have addresses in the Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Galashiels areas — spoke of their remorse and shame at becoming involved in the violence, and outlined the impact on their families and employment.

Rosalind Scott Bell, for McNulty, said: “Fortunately the incident was short-lived. Fortunately there were no serious injuries caused.”

Whitson and McNulty were jailed immediately for 13 months, Rintoul for 11 months, Kieran Ewing and Morton for nine months, Hughes and Gerry both for seven and a half months.

“These sentences are intended to spell out that courts will not tolerate such violence, also given the very clear football context in this case and that applies to you as it does to others,” said Judge Michael Fanning.

Currie and Manley had four and a half-month prison terms suspended and must each complete 120 hours’ unpaid work.

Cyprus: Man remanded over widely condemned football fans’ hooliganism - 19/11/2023

Source : Cyprus Mail

A 22-year-old man, who was arrested in relation to the violent clashes among football fans in Limassol earlier this week, has been remanded for three days, police said on Sunday.

The incidents that occurred late on Wednesday led to the injury of a 21-year-old man and property damages.

Meanwhile, three more people remain wanted for the same case.

The suspect was arrested at the Larnaca airport on Saturday night, where he went to board a flight to another country, despite the pending arrest warrant against him. He is facing charges related to hooliganism and conspiracy.

According to the police, the incidents, which have been likened to ‘civil war’, happened shortly before 11pm on Wednesday. They involved groups of hooligans bearing bats, stones, and other objects, who gathered outside the Omonia football club.

Officers who rushed to the scene following public complaints, said they encountered two groups, around 40 from Omonia and 80 from Apollonas, attacking each other with rocks, firecrackers, teargas, and Molotov cocktails.

As a result of the violence a car caught fire, shop windows were smashed, and a 21-year-old man was injured in the elbow. Upon arriving at the hospital, he was found to have suffered a fracture.

The perpetrators dispersed into the neighborhoods when the authorities arrived but police had arrested one person found in possession of three Molotov cocktails at the scene.

The violent incidents led the Cyprus police association to reiterate their opposition against the operation of certain football fan clubs.

Police had been strongly opposed to the re-opening of a particular clubhouse in Limassol, which had been temporarily banned from operating. However, the Limassol municipality overrode police caution and gave permits for two clubhouses to operate as of May 18.

Proposed anti-riot measures aiming to criminalise the wearing of face coverings in demonstrations have yet to be implemented.

Cyprus: Police tell Limassol mayor ‘hooligan’ club must close - 21/11/2023

Source : Cyprus Mail

Police on Tuesday are trying again to secure the closure of a clubhouse in Limassol connected with the latest episodes of violence by football fans which unfolded in the city last week.

Speaking on CyBC’s morning radio, police spokesman Christos Andreou said the club, where 80 hooded men armed with clubs, rocks and improvised bombs had gathered to instigate a street fight, was one of several such premises operating in the city, some of them unlicensed.

Complaints from neighbours about noise and nuisance from such premises are commonplace but nothing “serious” had occurred at the specific premise since May, Andreou said.

The police rep detailed that the legal process to close down a problematic club is circuitous, and police must file the case with the district court to secure a decree to this end – even if the premise is illegally operating without a permit.

Police have officially informed Limassol mayor Nicos Nicolaides of their intent to demand a closure decree from the court for the club in question, Andreou said.

The Limassol mayor, speaking on the same programme, condemned the violent episode and noted that incidents of delinquency and criminality are now becoming standard in the city which is a worrying development.

Justifying his decision last May to allow the operation of the club, despite the police’s reservations, Nicolaides said that the reasons incidents flare up around football clubs are complex and though some are linked to elements on the underworld, not all football fans fall under this category.

“Those people [hooligans] will find another place, if it’s not a club it will be a school, a coffee shop, or such,” the mayor said.

He noted that the specific club had originally not been operating with a licence but that the municipality had issued a permit for it last year to open as a coffee shop under extremely strict conditions to be renewed every two months.

“The hope was to offer a window for the club members to rein in their more subversive elements, knowing that the club could face closure if the conditions were not upheld,” the mayor said.

The municipal council will now examine whether the terms of the permit, which include items such as limits on days and hours of operation, have been violated, the mayor said.

“We will take a decision based on protecting the public and we stand by the police in their efforts,” Nicolaou stated, adding, however, that “a situation of action-and-reaction will not bring the desired result of safety.”
