Argentina-Brazil World Cup qualifying match delayed due to fight between fans in stands

The start of the South American World Cup qualifying match between Argentina and Brazil on Tuesday night was delayed because of a fight among the fans in the stands.

Policemen on the scene were using batons to break up the brawl between supporters of both teams at Rio's Maracana Stadium.

Argentina players asked those in the stand for calm before heading to the dressing room.

Argentina told their Brazil rivals they would only return to the pitch after the situation was calm.

All 69,000 tickets for the match in Rio de Janeiro were sold.

Brazil players remained on the pitch waiting for their rivals 20 minutes after the scheduled kick off time.

Policemen gathered around Argentina fans in a section that can host about 3,000 fans.

Czech police intervened ahead of a fight in the town of Heřmanice, said Pavla Jiroušková, spokesperson for the police in Moravia-Silesia, a region close to the Polish border. On site, 55 hooligans were checked, 17 of whom were taken to the police station because they did not have identity papers on them. They were fined for this infraction.

Celtic have been fined €17,500 (£15,248) after their supporters staged a pro-Palestine display before last month’s Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid, with the Scottish giants handed separate punishments totalling €11,500 by UEFA for lighting fireworks and blocking passageways.

The Green Brigade ultras group defied calls from the club not to show support for Palestine by waving flags and those supporters have subsequently been suspended from attending games at Celtic Park.

It is the third time already this season that Celtic have been penalised by the European governing body with the total now standing at €75,900. Following a pyrotechnic display in the loss away to Feyenoord, UEFA handed them a €23,400 fine and the home loss to Lazio led to a €23,500 punishment relating to an “offensive banner” and the lighting of fireworks

Following the theft of a banner belonging to BFC supporters by Cottbus Ultras at the start of the year, the game was classified as risky. Hundreds of police officers were mobilized.

50 police injured in clashes with Eintracht Frankfurt fans

Frankfurt police issued a statement on Saturday night, revealing that four of the injured officers required hospital treatment.

Additionally, stadium personnel were harmed during the pre-game clashes, resulting in the arrest of “several suspects,” according to the police. The confrontation between the police and fans began at 5:45 pm local time (16:45 GMT), approximately 45 minutes before the kickoff.

Eintracht Frankfurt supporters were dissatisfied with a police inspection at the stadium entrance, which is typically reserved for the club’s ultras.

Fans hurled “bottles, pyrotechnics, and heavy iron bars” at the police, who responded with “physical force, pepper spray, and truncheons” until reinforcements arrived to quell the clashes.

Following the altercation, a significant number of ultras boycotted the start of the match and did not take their seats in the stands in protest.

The World Cup 2026 qualifying match between Brazil and Argentina (0:1) started with a delay of 27 minutes due to serious disturbances in the stadium. During the singing of the anthems on one of the stands, where both Brazilian and Argentine fans were present, bloody clashes between supporters and the police erupted.



According to the Associated Press, accusations have been made against both Brazil and Argentina. The Argentine Football Association was accused of disorder among the fans and causing the match delay, while the Brazilian Football Confederation was blamed for failing to ensure the security of the organized match.

Earlier, the Brazilian TV channel Globo reported that the Brazilian Football Federation faces potential fines, the possibility of playing one or several matches without fans, matches on neutral grounds, or even a deduction of points from the Brazilian national team.

After the final whistle, the police had to intervene against 100 to 200 hooligans from Dortmund who tried to attack those from Gladbach escorted by the police who were able to contain the attack.

Later, around 5:45 p.m., a fight between hooligans broke out in front of the Mercure hotel located in Strobelallee.
A 21-year-old Gladbach fan was seriously injured.

Shortly afterwards, the police arrested a BVB hooligan, also aged 21, on Strobelallee. He is already known to the police.

An investigation has been opened for attempted homicide by the Dortmund police.

Around 11:30 p.m., a violent fight broke out between around twenty Angers supporters and those from Caen who were on the terrace of a pub in downtown Angers. Blows were exchanged and chairs flew between the both sides. The brawl resulted in the arrest of seven people. There are two injured: Pub security guard James Joyce, in the hand and ankle, as well as a police officer.

Police have arrested and charged 11 men and boys in connection with disorder before, during, and after the Motherwell vs Celtic game at Fir Park in September.

An officer and a steward were injured before kick-off.

Previously, Celtic noted “unsafe behaviour” at the match, when it said that supporters rushed turnstiles and forced open fire exits to allow ticketless fans into the stadium.

Officers have arrested and charged 11 supporters aged between 15 and 30 in connection with disorder offences on Saturday, September 30.

Police Scotland said reports had been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A spokesperson for the force said: “At the time of the fixture officers worked with stewards to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of all involved.

“One steward and one police officer were injured during an incident prior to kick-off.”

Nine were due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Celtic and Lazio fans hurl flares at each other before Champions League showdown



The Hoops' hopes of advancing beyond the group stage were dashed after Ciro Immobile's late double secured a 2-0 win for the hosts in Rome. And there were early signs the match would be a feisty one as supporters from both sides were seen throwing flares at one another prior to kick-off.

And the disappointing scenes continued during the match itself as bystanders were put at risk by the actions of a selfish few. It's understood members of the infamous Lazio ultras attacked first before Celtic fans responded by lobbing the pyros back where they came from.

The two fanbases clashed despite a barrier of empty seats being erected to keep the two apart. And while that may have limited any physical violence in the Italian capital, it didn't prevent the pair from launching missiles at one another.
