CAN 2021: Cameroon - Comoros - 24/01/2022

Source : BBC

Africa Cup of Nations: At least eight killed in crush at Cameroon stadium

At least eight people have been killed and dozens more injured in a crush outside an Africa Cup of Nations football match in Cameroon.

Videos showed crowds of screaming football fans being crushed at the entry gates to the Paul Biya stadium in the capital Yaounde.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes outside the ground as thousands of fans struggled to get access.

Of the 38 people who were injured, seven are in a serious condition.

One child is among the dead, according to officials quoted by the AFP news agency.

The stadium has a capacity of 60,000, but because of Covid restrictions it was not meant to be more than 80% full for the game on Monday.

Match officials were quoted as saying that some 50,000 people were trying to attend.

Danish journalist Buster Emil Kirchner told the BBC he saw "a lot of chaos" by the stadium's gates as fans clamoured to enter the ground.

"It was hectic - people running, people climbing fences, people breaking through the barricades," he said, adding he saw many people without tickets trying to "force themselves in".

Journalist Leocadia Bongben told the BBC's Newsday programme that she saw commotion coming from one of the fan zone areas outside the stadium.

"People started shouting. A minute after that an ambulance came to the stadium, but when we got to the place the police would not allow us to get close to where the stampede was," she said.

"It's really quite a sad situation that people go to watch a game and they end up dying there."

Nick Cavell, a producer for BBC Africa, was at the match and said news of the crush did not seem to filter through to the crowd until there were reports on social media.

Discarded shoes and other debris was strewn around the entrance of the stadium, he said.

Nurse Olinga Prudence told the Associated Press that some of the injured were in a "desperate condition".

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in a statement that it was investigating the situation.

The last 16 match between Cameroon and Comoros took place despite the incident and ended with a 2-1 win for the hosts.

Beitar Jerusalem - Hapoel Tel-Aviv - 24/01/2022

Beitar Jerusalem fans stab Hapoel Tel Aviv fan, 12 arrested for violence

Eyewitnesses near the area said they saw a fan of Hapoel Tel Aviv bleeding amid a violent brawl at the Jerusalem Central Bus Station.

A violent brawl broke out at the Jerusalem Central Bus Station on late Monday night between fans of the soccer teams Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Tel Aviv, resulting in a Hapoel Tel Aviv fan getting stabbed, according to Israeli media.

The incident, which followed the match at Teddy Stadium between the two rival teams, was reportedly sparked by Beitar fans, who attacked first, according to initial reports.

Eyewitnesses near the area say they saw a fan of Hapoel Tel Aviv bleeding. Israel Police have opened an investigation.

The violence was not confined to the bus station. Reportedly, incidents took place in the stadium itself, with Beitar fans reportedly throwing lighters at Hapoel Tel Aviv player Idan Vered during the game, according to Sport 1.

Three suspects were also arrested near Teddy Stadium on suspicion of involvement in violent incidents in the vicinity of the area as well as attacking a vehicle driver even before Monday night's game had taken place. The driver did not need medical attention.

Also, another nine suspects were arrested for stone-throwing, assaulting a police officer and causing damage the following day. Some suspects were also taken to the police station for questioning.

This comes following the closure of the eastern stands at Teddy Stadium due to the Israel Football Association penalizing Beitar.

The game ended in a 2-0 victory for Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Fiorentina ultras banner against Vlahovic - 25/01/2022

Source : https://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/

Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic has been announced to Juventus. What trigger the anger of the supporters, who replied Monday with a banner deployed in front of the stadium.
Dusan Vlahovic hasn't left yet, but he already has Fiorentina fans on his back. A banner (very) hostile to the Serb was deployed in front of the Artemio stadium: "Respect cannot be bought with goals, Vlahovic juventino of shit!".

Seven arrested during Forest v Derby as police investigate flare being thrown

Seven people were arrested on the day - six for public order offences, and one for a common assault on a police officer.

And Nottinghamshire Police are investigating reports a flare was thrown into the away section of the ground during the game.

Officers are working with Nottingham Forest to review CCTV footage of the game to try and identify anyone who could have been involved.

No arrests have been made yet in relation to this alleged incident.

Chief Inspector Neil Williams, match commander, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We are aware of an incident in which a flare is reported to have been thrown into the away section during the weekend’s match and are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage from the game.

"Nottinghamshire Police is currently working closely with both clubs to identify anyone who could have been involved and would ask anyone who has any information about what happened to get in touch with us.

"We take incidents of this nature extremely seriously, with pyrotechnic detection dogs based outside the ground discovering a number of pyrotechnics before the match, as part of an operation led by Nottingham Forest.

Leeds United - Newcastle United - 22/01/2022

Source : https://www.dailymail.co.uk/

Newcastle Supporters' Trust demand Leeds take urgent action after crushing in the away end of their Premier League match at Elland Road 'that could have resulted in serious injury or worse'

Newcastle's Supporters' Trust has called for Leeds United to take urgent action after the crushing that could have led to 'serious injury or worse' at Elland Road on Saturday.

Hundreds of visiting fans have taken to social media to reveal their horror at the situation outside and inside the away end, during which it is claimed turnstiles failed and only the belated opening of an exit door prevented the suffering of serious injury.

Leeds have confirmed they will be reviewing safety measures and are working with West Yorkshire Police following the issues raised by the Newcastle United Supporters' Trust.

Greg Tomlinson, NUST chair, said: 'The Trust has raised significant concerns to Leeds United in relation to the issues that could have resulted in serious injury or worse and were not the fault of any match-going Newcastle fans.

'I welcome the quick response from Leeds and their commitment to undertaking a review. No football supporter should go to a match and be in fear of their own safety.

'There were issues when we played at Elland Road in November 2016 and it was even worse this weekend – it is imperative that lessons are learned to prevent this from happening again.'

'There were issues when we played at Elland Road in November 2016 and it was even worse this weekend – it is imperative that lessons are learned to prevent this from happening again.'

Alex Hurst, an NUST board member, told the True Faith Podcast: 'I went to Leeds in 2016 and it was a disgrace - the access, that crush you don't feel anywhere else at football grounds.

'On Saturday, nothing had improved. I'm at a loss as to how Leeds think this is an acceptable way to treat people and keep them safe.

'Essentially, there were only two entrances and five turnstiles for nearly 3,000 people. I got there half an hour before kick-off because I knew it was difficult getting in. I still missed kick-off. In the end, they just opened the wider access points - it was a very unsafe situation.'

Rudiger hit by objects, two arrested as Football Association investigate

Season 21/22 - January - Page 5 Ptap

Two men have been arrested and the Football Association have launched an investigation after objects were thrown at Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger during Sunday's 2-0 win over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

The incident occurred in the 73rd minute when play was suspended after it appeared a lighter among other items were aimed at Rudiger from the section containing Spurs supporters, prompting captain Cesar Azpilicueta to shout in the direction of the travelling contingent.

Referee Paul Tierney and fourth official Andrew Madley were made aware of the situation and a request followed for more stewards to be deployed to the away end.

"Two men have been arrested on suspicion of throwing objects from the stands during the Chelsea versus Tottenham Hotspur match at Stamford Bridge," a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said.

"They have been taken into custody. Inquiries, in conjunction with Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC, are ongoing to identify anyone else involved in throwing objects during the match."

The FA are liaising with the Met Police and a spokesperson said: "We are investigating the incident and we are liaising with the club and the police as a matter of urgency."

When the two sides met in the Carabao Cup semifinal, first leg clash at the same venue earlier this month, Spurs subsequently released a statement condemning homophobic chanting from their own supporters during the match.

This latest incident came at the end of a week in which Aston Villa players were hit by plastic bottles thrown by Everton fans during a match at Goodison Park, and Arsenal issued a statement which warned supporters they face a three-year ban from Emirates Stadium for entering the pitch after recent matches were marred by individuals encroaching onto the pitch.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel recorded a video message last week urging Chelsea fans to behave themselves and after Sunday's game, he said: "I sent a message to our supporters that we love to have them close to the pitch, that it is a brilliant atmosphere that they are not behind fences or nets.

"Everybody needs to show respect and behave to certain guidelines, there is no doubt about it.

"If this is the new trend we should act together so that it stops as soon as possible to protect the atmosphere and the environment of this game, because it is absolutely unique here in England."

Arsenal fans wanted by police after Burnley crowd disorder at Turf Moor - 25/01/2022

Source: https://www.lancs.live/

Police have released pictures of 14 fans they are looking to identify after bottles and seats were thrown at Turf Moor.

Trouble erupted between Burnley and Arsenal fans in the Cricket Field Stand during their Premier League clash on September 18 last year.

Supporters from both teams were segregated, but items including bottles and wooden seats were thrown across the line.

No injuries were reported by fans, though a steward reported being hit.

Officers investigating the incident are now asking for the public’s help to identify the men in the images.

They are all believed to be Arsenal fans.

PC Dan Fish, of Burnley Police, said: “Since September our investigation into the disorder between Burnley and Arsenal fans has been very much ongoing.

“We appealed for information to identify 11 Burnley fans in November and now have further CCTV stills of 14 men – all Arsenal fans – who we wish to speak to.

The disorder at the end of the match was unacceptable and it was pure luck no-one was seriously harmed.

“I would encourage anyone with information about those pictured to speak to police immediately.”

Portugal : Ermesinde - São Pedro da Cova - 24/01/2022

Source: https://www.jn.pt/

The game between Ermesinde and São Pedro da Cova, from the Elite Division of AF Porto, was marred by a police charge.

At the end of the match, which São Pedro da Cova won this Sunday by 3-1, players from both teams got involved in clashes with mixed fans and the police were forced to intervene.

At that moment, at another point on the field of play, another fan invaded the pitch and ended up being caught by the police on duty as he was approaching another bench. At that moment, other bystanders apparently came to his aid and the police used force to disperse them.

In the midst of the confusion, the first invader ended up getting up and trying to escape from the authorities, being later punched by another policeman, who ended up making an arrest.

Celtic fans booted out of home section at Hearts clash

Police have launched a probe after 'several people' were identified in the stadium who had bought tickets for the opposing section of the ground at last night's clash.

Stewards located those fans before ejecting them from the stadium. No arrests have as of yet been made.

One eyewitness told Edinburgh Live : “There was a faction of the home support that were going around and trying to police various Celtic supporters.

“There were at least five flare ups in the first-half alone. One of the Celtic supporters got hit on the head with a bottle before they were escorted away. It was quite ugly.”

Assistant referee injured in more crowd trouble

The ugly side of football was evident again for the second successive weekend, with an assistant referee having to be replaced after being hit by a missile, abusive singing and flares holding up play.

An assistant referee was hit by an object thrown during Crewe Alexandra’s 2-0 home defeat by Rotherham United in League One. The incident happened in front of the away fans and caused a lengthy stoppage. Rotherham’s Richard Wood went over to talk to the travelling fans. Although the assistant attempted to carry on, he had to be replaced by the fourth official.

Accidents in stadiums and arrests on the rise, the British Police: “Alarm, violence is back” -  30/01/2022

Source : https://www.ruetir.com/

Since the start of the Premier League season, 802 fans have been arrested: the figure worries the British police who have asked for an emergency meeting with the leaders of English football

In the last day of the English championship, in a few hours, there were attacks on players in Everton-Aston Villa and in the Chelsea-Tottenham derby. Initially isolated episodes, but which begin to worry the authorities. Mark Roberts, head of the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU), in fact, urged Premier League officials to address this growing problem. Has “hooliganism” returned to football across the English Channel?

“I wrote to the Premier League asking for an emergency meeting, but I have not yet received an answer – explains Roberts to the AFP agency -. This will require a joint response from the clubs, the League, the government, the fans and the police. It would be wrong to say that we are where we were a few decades ago, but the image of the Premier League is definitely deteriorating and coordinated action is needed if we do not want it to deteriorate further ”.

Perhaps it is alarming to talk about this increase in violence in these terms, but the police fear that, if it is not stopped immediately, the dark times when English football was scary could really return. According to the authorities, so far this season the number of accidents and arrests increased by 36% compared to the same dates of the last “regular” football season, the 2019-20, with 560 recorded incidents leading to 547 arrests. Today, however, the overall picture counts 759 episodes of violence, which ended with the imprisonment of 802 people.
