| Greek government to come down hard on hooliganism - 10/01/2005
Source : AFP
Greek sports undersecretary Giorgos Orfanos said hooliganism such as that which occurred Sunday forcing the postponement of the first division match between Panionios and Olympiakos will not be tolerated in the future.
"We don't need those who destroy. Let it be known that the community and the state will reject them. We will bring to the matches those who love the sport," Orfanos said.
Some 600 fans invaded the pitch before the start of the match at the Panionios Stadium in the Athens suburb of Nea Smyrni and fought each other and the few police available.
The incidents began when Olympiakos supporters who had not succeeded in getting tickets for the match suddenly broke through a barrier and entered the stands and the pitch.
One Panionios fan was seriously hurt with head wounds and taken to the hospital and dozens others were treated at the stadium's first aid station.
Police said 14 officers were injured in the melee when fans threw stones, broken plastic chairs and other debris at them. One of the officers had to be hospitalized.
Only two arrests were made.
The two teams and the referee waited for things to calm down but one hour later the match was postponed and is to be played at a later date probably behind closed doors.
Chief Athens Prosecutor Dimitris Papangelopoulos has ordered a preliminary investigation into Sunday's violent incidents, the worst this season.
The Greek government condemned the incidents and spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said that justice had already swung into action.
He stressed that the government has introduced measures to combat football violence that have brought results.
"Those responsible for the violence will be found and punished. The law will be put into effect in the strictest form," said Alternate Culture Minister Fani Palli-Petralia whose ministry oversees sports in the country.
She said Greece will not allow this incident to mar the "golden summer" of last year when the national team won the Euro 2004 title and the country hosted successful Olympics and Paralympics.
"The days of hooliganism are over," Palli-Petralia said. "We will not allow such incidents to present a different picture abroad than the one we had this past summer."
Violence on and off the pitch has plagued Greek football for years and a number of measures taken by previous governments have failed to put a halt to the phenomena.
The Professional Football Players Association of Greece in a statement Monday said that those who love the sport do not want such a championship filled with violence.
"Either you round up all those troublemakers or play football by yourselves," the association warned state authorities. _________________

| Men jailed over football violence - 05/01/2005
Source : BBC NEWS
Ten men have been sentenced to a total of 22 years for their part in violent clashes in south London after England's Euro 2004 defeat by France.
The men were found guilty of violent disorder at Croydon Magistrates' Court after throwing missiles at police and vehicles in Croydon last June.
The men, aged from 18 to 21, received sentences ranging from 21 to 30 months.
They were all banned from football grounds for six years and from watching England games in pubs.
Connor O'Kane, of Anthony Road, South Norwood; Peter Goodwin, of Warren Avenue, South Croydon; and Kevin Reed, of Sunny Bank, Warlingham, in Croydon, were sentenced to two years in jail.
Danny Stride, 18, of Christie Drive, Croydon, was sentenced to two years in a Youth Detention Centre.
Meanwhile Luke Daniels, of Haytor Drive, Newton Abbott in Devon, was sentenced to 21 months, Matthew Carroll, of Cheyne Walk and Stuart Morris Brooks, of Northampton Road, both in Addiscombe, were each sentenced to 27 months - all at a Youth Detention Centre.
Mark John Winiarski, of Notson Road, South Norwood; and Bill Killick, of Penfold Road, Crawley, West Sussex, were both jailed for 30 months.
Lewis Rees, of Valley View, Biggin Hill, Kent, was sentenced to 34 months in jail.
Ch Insp David Clayton, Senior Investigating Officer, said: "The vast majority of people who watched England play football during Euro 2004 in Croydon town centre conducted themselves appropriately.
"However, the small minority of those individuals intent on tarnishing the reputation of Croydon have been rightfully sentenced." _________________

| Pair jailed for Euro 2004 rampage - 10/01/2005
Source : BBC NEWS
Two football fans jailed for a violent rampage after England's Euro 2004 defeat by France were labelled "ugly urban savages" by a judge.
Northampton Crown Court heard one man was unconscious for three weeks after being beaten in Kettering, Northants.
Nathan Milne, 25, of Spring Rise, Kettering, was jailed for five years and six months for robbery and assault.
Nathan Hadfield, 20, of Spencer Street, Burton Latimer, was sentenced to 33 months for affray and assault.
Jamie Bradshaw, 20 , from Burton Latimer, was ordered to complete 50 hours community service for his role in the violence. He admitted a charge of affray.
The court heard that during the rampage on 13 June two men were robbed.
John Williams, who was unconscious in hospital with a brain injury, has been left with breathing difficulties and loss of memory.
He will have to take medication indefinitely to prevent him suffering blackouts and epilepsy.
Sentencing the three men, Judge Charles Harris said: "People like you are making the towns of England revolting and dangerous places to be at night."
He also hit out at plans to allow 24-hour drinking.
Mindless aggression
"This illustrates a great deal of what is wrong with a substantial proportion of young people today who drink to excess, take drugs and if possible watch football.
"This reduces you to a state of brutal mindless aggression and you focus on people who you attack, or fight or rob."
Milne admitted two robberies and causing grievous bodily harm to Shaun Dainty who was with Mr Williams when he was punched and kicked unconscious.
Hadfield admitted affray, attacking Mr Dainty and assaulting Mr Williams. _________________

| Six arrested after football brawl - 14/01/2005
Source : BBC NEWS
Police have arrested six people and searched several homes after an investigation into violent clashes after a football match in Nottingham.
The six fans are being questioned about a brawl between Notts County and Boston United supporters in October 2004.
The fight began outside Nottingham railway station as fans were making their way home from Meadow Lane ground.
A Boston United supporter was taken to hospital for treatment after he was hit in the face with a glass.
A chair and a metal pole were also thrown in the disturbance as 20 men clashed on the crowded station concourse.
British Transport Police have been studying CCTV footage of the fight.
The six Nottinghamshire men are being questioned at a city police station. _________________

| Olympiakos Pireus - AEK Athens - 09/01/2005Source : REÜTERS Olympiakos stay top despite riot postponementOlympiakos Piraeus held on to top spot in the Greek league on Sunday despite not kicking a ball. As running riots inside and outside the Nea Smyrni ground, which left nine policemen in hospital, led to the postponement of their match at Panionios, their main rivals Panathinaikos slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of AEK Athens. Olympiakos and AEK are level on 30 points but the Piraeus club have a better goal difference and now a game in hand. Panathinaikos drop to third with 29 points from 14 matches. The violence at Panionios, subject of an inquiry into match-fixing during the UEFA Cup, began an hour before kickoff as up to 2,500 Olympiakos fans, most of them without tickets, attempted to get into the ground. Olympiakos had been given just 322 tickets but about 1,000 visiting supporters got into the ground and began fighting with Panionios supporters and the police. Alan Pardew, coach of English first division team West Ham United, and former Sweden forward Martin Dahlin were among those taking cover. The referee called off the game when the police said they could not guarantee the safety of the players. Nine policemen were taken to hospital but police authorities said their injuries were not serious. Two men were arrested. There was also some trouble between AEK and Panathinaikos supporters before their match at the Olympic Stadium. _________________ | |

| Sweden wants to ban hooligans from sports events - 13/01/2005
Source : REÜTERS
Sweden, hit by serious soccer crowd trouble at the end of last season, wants to ban hooligans from sports events, the government said on Thursday. Under the proposed law, a supporter could be banned from a sporting event if they pose a risk to public order. A decision to ban someone would be based on whether they had committed similar offences in the past.
A Stockholm match between AIK and Hammarby in October was interrupted for an hour when AIK fans went on the rampage. The police found Molotov cocktails nearby. Local newspapers dubbed the incident the worst night in Sweden's soccer history.
"Crowd trouble and disturbances during a sports event are unacceptable," Justice Minister Thomas Brodstrom said in a statement. The law would come into force from July 1.
The Swedish soccer federation has said it has been asking for a law to ban hooligans for several years.
Breaking the attendance ban could lead to a maximum six-month prison sentence. A ban can be sought by sports associations and would be imposed by the Swedish public prosecutor. _________________

| Anti-racist group disappointed by Atletico fine - 13/01/2005
Source : REÜTERS
A Spanish anti-racist group has described the decision to fine Atletico Madrid 600 euros (420 pounds) following racist abuse during a league match as "ridiculous".
The organisation also questioned the commitment of sports authorities to deal with the problem.
"The Sports Council is failing to honour its word and fight against racism," Carlos Ferreira, the national coordinator of the United Against Racism in Football group, told sports daily AS on Thursday.
"A 600-euro fine for Atletico is ridiculous."
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) fined Atletico after referee Alfonso Perez Burrull noted in his match report that Real Madrid fullback Roberto Carlos had been singled out for racist abuse in last weekend's league match at the Calderon.
The RFEF handed out a minor punishment because they deemed that the club had done all it could to prevent the incidents by asking the fans to stop the abuse over the public address system.
AS reported that one fan had been fined 6,000 euros by Spain's Anti-violence Commission for making xenophobic insults during the match.
Last month Albacete were fined 600 euros when the same referee reported that Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o had been abused in a league match.
The fine was halved on appeal but two of the fans who had been involved in the incidents were fined 6,000 euros and banned from stadiums for five months.
Earlier this week Spanish authorities stated their determination to clamp down on the problem of racist abuse by supporters at football matches.
"After the worrying outbreaks of racism by a minority of fans during recent months, the Sports Council, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), the Football League and the Spanish Players Association want to reiterate their condemnation of this type of behaviour," a statement on the RFEF website said.
"They also want to reaffirm their determination to take tough action against any evidence of racism or xenophobia in Spanish Football." _________________

| Leeds United - Cardiff City - 15/01/2005
Source : TEAMtalk.com
Trouble mars Leeds clash
West Yorkshire Police officers sustained injuries following running battles which took place with Leeds fans following the Coca-Cola Championship clash against Cardiff at Elland Road.
West Yorkshire Police also made 10 arrests for public disorder offences as Leeds fans attempted to exact a measure of revenge for the unsavoury events which unfolded three years ago during an FA Cup third-round tie at Ninian Park.
In conjunction with their South Wales counterparts, and both clubs, a major operation was mounted by the West Yorkshire constabulary in order to prevent any trouble.
Although there were no incidents before kick-off, violence flared after the 1-1 draw as hundreds of Leeds supporters waited outside the ground for Cardiff fans, who were detained inside for around 50 minutes following the final whistle.
No Cardiff fan had been allowed to travel independently, with all match tickets handed out at a secret location 10 miles from Elland Road to only those supporters who had made their way on official coaches.
But as the Leeds supporters attempted to attack the convoy of Cardiff coaches, they were repelled by the police, who in turn became the targets, resulting in the injuries and arrests.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "At the conclusion of the match the Cardiff supporters were detained inside the ground with a view to their own safety, and they behaved extremely well.
"Unfortunately after making their way to the waiting coaches, Leeds supporters attacked police officers, with two sustaining minor injuries.
"One injured his back after being pulled from his horse which bolted, but fortunately was retrieved, while another injured his leg.
"There were 10 arrests for public order offences."
It is understood part of the M621 motorway, which runs past Elland Road, was closed for a short period of time due to the incidents. _________________

| Police upbeat over derby - 10/01/2005
Source : TEAMtalk.com
Hampshire Police insist Southampton's fourth-round FA Cup clash with deadly local rivals Portsmouth will be "good for both cities" despite the added animosity over manager Harry Redknapp.
Pompey fans were furious when Redknapp, assistant Jim Smith and coach Kevin Bond left Fratton Park for similar roles at St Mary's last month.
Graffiti painted adjacent to Portsmouth's ground reads: "How could you Harry?"
Former West Ham manager Redknapp took Pompey from near the bottom of the old first division into the Premiership in 2003, steered them to 13th place in the top flight and was the object of worship among supporters.
He left when they were two places higher than that in December when Velimir Zajec - the former sporting director of Greek double winners Panathinaikos - was brought in by chairman Milan Mandaric as "executive director". He has since become team manager.
Hampshire Football United spokesman Sergeant Alex Taylor said: "Like last year in the Carling Cup at Southampton it will be a Category C game which means about 400 officers will be present. A few people will have to do overtime but it will be a good occasion for both cities."
There were around 80 arrests when Portsmouth beat Southampton 1-0 at Fratton Park last season but little trouble during the two meetings at St Mary's.
Sgt Taylor said: "Hopefully it is another chance to restore a little more magic of the FA Cup."
The game looks likely to be switched to Sunday afternoon for live BBC television presentation.
Redknapp, whose Saints side scraped past Northampton Town 3-1 in the third round, admitted he had an inkling he would be up against Portsmouth as he listened to the draw.
He said: "When there were eight teams left I knew it would be a certainty."
But despite the potential backlash he is likely to face from angry Pompey fans, Redknapp is unconcerned, adding: "There may be something, but I had two and a half years there, I took over when they were next to bottom of the First Division and I signed all the players that are there now.
"If people look at it they will realise my legacy. I walked away from there with my head held high and I've still a lot of good friends there and they all know exactly what I did." _________________

Phone Thrown After Rooney Goal
Police were today investigating after a mobile phone was thrown on to the pitch after England striker Wayne Rooney fired Manchester United ahead against Liverpool at Anfield. One spectator was arrested but it was not confirmed that it was the same person who threw the phone, a Merseyside Police spokesman said. The incident happened as former Everton striker Rooney celebrated in front of opposition fans after Liverpool keeper Jerzy Dudek had blundered, allowing Rooney's long-range shot to pass underneath him. The police spokesman said: "We have recovered a mobile phone from the pitch. We are not sure whether it was thrown at anybody. We are making inquiries. "One person has been arrested for a throwing incident but I am not sure whether it was connected." An FA spokesman, who said he had not seen the incident, added: "Obviously we will study any reports from the game, as we would any game." _________________

More than 20 men from North East Lincolnshire are to appear in court charged with violent disorder.
The men, all from the Grimsby area, are part of a group of 40 people charged in connection with a fracas involving rival football fans in Scunthorpe. Another 18 men from Scunthorpe have already been charged with violent disorder and will appear at Grimsby Crown Court at a later date. The incident took place in Frodingham Road in April 2004. | Nottingham: Football hooligan's ban extended - 19/01/2005
Source : BBC NEWS
A Nottingham football hooligan already banned from attending matches has been told to stay away for three more years. Dale C*******, 42, from Sneinton was originally banned until May this year.
He was arrested again in September at Nottingham rail station for threatening a police officer with violence after a Forest-Derby County game. Nottingham magistrates have given him an extra three-year punishment, which stops him entering exclusion zones around three football grounds in Notts. The court also demanded C******* surrender his passport before international matches, pay £150 costs and carry out 60 hours of community service. Police say they hope the move will send a strong message that football hooligans will be punished. _________________

| UK helps Greece tackle hooligans - 28/01/2005Source : BBC NEWS Sports officials and top football clubs in Greece have called on the government and police to take much tougher measures against football hooligans. Greece has one of the worst records in Europe for football violence and officials complain the riotous fans are ruining the country's national sport. Now Greece is turning to another country which has suffered similar problems in the past - England. The English Football Association and UK police are trying to help. Just six months ago, a single goal sparked massive celebrations across the whole of Greece. The Greek football team had won its first major international tournament: Euro 2004. But this moment of triumph and national unity was short-lived and it was soon back to the more common form of expression at football matches: violence. Ticket sales Fighting between fans was so bad just before a match here in Athens earlier this month that the referee called the game off. At least 15 people were taken to hospital for treatment. Petros Kokkalis, vice-president of Olympiakos - one of the clubs involved - says football hooligans are having a devastating impact on the sport in Greece. "It drives a certain devaluation for the total football industry and in the football market by driving crowds away from the stadia," he said. "Peace-loving football fans are being driven away by small minorities of young men who are intent on tribalism and violence. And this is a major problem for Greek football right now." Back in 1985, more than three million tickets were sold every season for football matches. Last year, it was down to less than one million. As a result, revenue for the main football clubs has fallen dramatically. But now help could be at hand. Chief Superintendent Barry Norman is just one of several senior officials from the UK who have been at a conference this week in Athens passing on their experience of dealing with football hooliganism to their Greek counterparts. He says the answer lies in full co-operation between the police and football clubs, and a clear division of responsibility between them for securing football grounds during matches. "We have turned football around in the UK over the last 20 years. How many people used to walk round wearing the team strip 25 years ago? Didn't happen. These days football is real big business in England, because it doesn't have the hooligan problems that it used to have." He says many more women and children now attend matches - almost unheard of 25 years ago. Pressure Establishing dedicated police intelligence teams to track the hooligans has also been an important part of the British strategy, along with improvements to the football grounds and the introduction of membership and smart cards. In Greece, co-operation between the clubs and the authorities is minimal. One club official says it isn't even clear who is responsible for cutting the grass, let alone security. The new president of the Greek Football League, Alexandros Lykourezos, says he will try to pressurise the government. "It's not an easy task, it's going to take some time," he said. "I will visit the ministers of sport and public order and I will try to obtain quick and immediate measures." Although the issue is now being pushed up the government's agenda, it's likely to be many years before football hooliganism here is stamped out. Crowd violence has become an ugly feature of Greek football _________________ | |

| North-Korean soccer fans run amok after loss - 04/01/2005
Source: Japundit.com
North Korean soccer fans started throwing bottles, stones, and chairs onto the field after a player of their national team was sent off during a World Cup qualifying group match in Pyongyang. There was also violence outside the stadium as thousands of angry fans made it impossible for the opposing Iranian team to board their bus. Fans were upset at what they say was unfair officiating in a game North Korea lost 2-0, bumping them to the bottom of its World Cup qualifying group after previous losses to Japan and Bahrain. In the end, soldiers and riot police had to be called in to stem the violence.
Japan is scheduled to play the North Korean team in Pyongyang on June 8. This latest development as well as the politically charged atmosphere that exists between Korea and Japan has officials concerned that North Korea may not be able to ensure the safety of Japanese fans planning to travel to Pyongyang for the game. _________________

| Newcastle United - Coventry City - FA Cup - 29/01/2005Source : http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk Violence erupted inside the Three Bulls Heads, in Newcastle city centre, after an FA Cup clash between Newcastle United and Coventry City. The thugs, members of the notorious Newcastle Gremlins, desperately tried to find hooligans from Coventry to fight. But they failed to organise a clash and turned on genuine Coventry fans, men and women, who had been enjoying a quiet drink in the Percy Street pub. Caught on CCTV, the gang steamed into the bar shortly after 6pm. They attacked the startled visitors, throwing bottles and glasses at them. Then they waded in kicking and punching like a scene from a Wild West saloon. | |
