Police investigate trouble at Spennymoor v Darlington match
POLICE have started an investigation into crowd trouble at the Spennymoor Town versus Darlington game yesterday.
The second half of the New Year's Day tie, at Spennymoor's Brewery Field, was delayed by around 15 minutes following an incident in which a fence between the pitch and away fans collapsed.
Police were called and club officials, stewards and security staff moved both sets of fans away from the area in question before the referee said the game could be restarted.
Spennymoor Town has handed CCTV footage of the incident, which happened in front of a section of away fans, to police.
A spokesman for Durham Constabularly said officers were made aware of a disturbance at Spennymoor Town Football Club shortly before 4pm yesterday (January 1).
He said: "It is believed a number of supporters breached a fence and threw bottles and coins.
"Police along with stewards re-instated the fence and separated the group while the match continued.
"No injuries were sustained.
“We are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident and enquiries are ongoing.”

England : Boro fans suing police claim they were 'unfairly detained' - but they need financial backing - 02/01/2020
Source : https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/
Boro fans who claim to have been "unfairly detained" by Derbyshire Police for over six hours are raising funds to launch a legal case against the force.
Middlesbrough beat Derby 1-0 in a Championship clash on March 17, 2015 after a Patrick Bamford strike.
But the day was soured for 44 Boro supporters who say they were treated "like criminals" and falsely imprisoned by the police.
Lawyers at Watson Woodhouse Solicitors are now heading a legal challenge, claiming "supporting football is not a crime".
A fundraising campaign has been launched to help pay for court costs, with £1,920 raised to date.
Supporters are hoping fellow football supporters will pledge financial support in case they’re landed with a hefty legal bill.
The Crowd Justice page says: "The fans had travelled from Middlesbrough to an away game and were detained on arrival for over six hours.
"During this time they were not able to use a toilet or have anything to drink.
"Some of the fans were told by police officers to urinate in the street next to a church. This was extremely humiliating and degrading for those concerned."
It adds: "Football fans are being treated like criminals for just trying to support their team, so we’re taking Derbyshire Police to court to get justice for their misuse of dispersal powers.
"Please donate what you can to our legal fund and share this page on social media to spread awareness. Help us hold the police accountable."
Watson Woodhouse Solicitors is representing 44 of around 50 supporters, who claim they were penned in for hours, issued with dispersal orders and herded onto a train to get them away from Derby, despite having caused no trouble.
It’s claimed that when the train arrived in Nottingham, they were again penned in until their minibuses arrived, which were then given a blue light escort to the motorway.
The legal team is working on a "no win-no fee" basis, however should the fans lose, they’ll be liable for the police legal cost, which could be huge.
For more about the crowdfunding campaign visit this website.
A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said: “Due to the ongoing proceedings in relation to this matter it is not appropriate for us to comment at this time.”

More shame for the Premier League as THREE fans are arrested at Brighton vs Chelsea over 'disgusting racist and homophobic abuse' of players and supporters
Three fans were arrested for alleged racist and homophobic abuse during Brighton's 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea on Wednesday.
The supporters were ejected from their seats and were subsequently arrested by Sussex Police outside the Amex Stadium.
The fans will now face prosecution following the three separate incidents.
Brighton chief executive and deputy chairman Paul Barber said, 'Yet again our safety and stewarding team, along with Sussex Police, have had to deal with three separate and unwanted instances of disgusting racist and homophobic abuse.
'If the prospect of a life ban from watching their clubs play football isn't a strong enough deterrent, we have to ask the question as to whether the courts should be given the power to hand out more severe punishments?
'Football can only do so much, and we are sick and tired of the game's reputation being tarnished by these people.
'I find it impossible to comprehend how and why some individuals think it's acceptable to behave in this way, and yet again I will make it very clear that neither Brighton & Hove Albion nor the wider football community, will tolerate racism, homophobia, or any other form of discrimination at any time.
'We would urge any fans confronted with similar discriminatory behaviour at our stadium to report it immediately, either directly to a steward or via our anonymous hotline, and we will continue to take the strongest possible action against such bigoted individuals. These people are not welcome at the Amex or at any football matches.'

Bulgarian football fan run over by car in Thessaloniki after clashes
One Bulgarian football fan was killed in Thessaloniki during clashes between rival supporters, while two more fans got injured, police in the northern city reported on Sunday.
Fighting among rival fans broke out in central Thessaloniki one day after the Aris vs PAOK football derby on Saturday evening and a few hours before Sunday's PAOK vs Aris basketball match.
A set of PAOK fans, police said, attacked a group of fans of a Bulgarian club (from the city of Plovdiv) who are affiliated to another Thessaloniki club and had reportedly come to the Greek city for the Saturday derby.
A 28-year-old Bulgarian tried to escape the PAOK fans’ onslaught and was killed by a bypassing car. Police said the coroner would determine whether the fan's death was sustained by the car or by the fan action.
Two other Bulgarians sustained injuries at the attack by the 20-odd PAOK fans and were treated at the Ippokratio hospital of Thessaloniki.
Police told Kathimerini 14 suspects have been detained.
Aris soccer club issued a statement asking for the arrest of those responsible for the tragic incident.

‘Shame on you’: Mario Balotelli accuses Lazio fans of racism
Mario Balotelli criticised Lazio fans after offensive chants towards the striker caused play to be briefly stopped on Sunday.
Balotelli gave Brescia the lead after 18 minutes but the game was held up while an announcement was made that reportedly warned against further discriminatory chanting.
After the 2-1 defeat Balotelli posted on Instagram: “It’s a loss that hurt but we will come back stronger and we are on the right way! Lazio fans that were today at the stadium SHAME ON YOU! saynotoracism.”
Lazio released a statement that said: “As always Lazio dissociates in the most taxing way from the discriminatory behaviour carried out by a very small minority of fans during the match against Brescia.
“The club once again reiterates its condemnation of such unjustified misconduct and confirms its intent to prosecute those who in fact betray their sporting passion, causing serious damage to the image of the club.”

Italy: Lazio avoid serious sanction for Balotelli abuse as Serie A confirm €20,000 fine - 08/01/2020
Source : https://www.sportsmax.tv/
Lazio have avoided serious sanctions for racial abuse directed at Brescia's Mario Balotelli by their supporters after Lega Serie A confirmed the club have been handed a €20,000 fine.
Balotelli scored the opening goal in Sunday's encounter, before Lazio went on to claim a 2-1 victory thanks to Ciro Immobile's brace after Andrea Cistana had been sent off.
Shortly after Balotelli's goal, a warning was read out over the stadium's public address system after chants appeared to be targeting the Italy international.
Balotelli hit out at those responsible in an Instagram post that accompanied a clip of his goal, with the striker writing: "Lazio fans that were today [Sunday] at the stadium, SHAME ON YOU #saynotoracism."
The league agrees the chants were of a discriminatory nature and have issued a punishment, though Lazio avoided harsher sanctions due to their assistance in the investigation.
A Lega Serie A statement on Wednesday read: "Lazio was penalised an amount of €20,000 for having its supporters, in the 21st and 29th minutes of the first half, emitting a chant of racial discrimination against a player of the opposing team, in addition to an insulting chant against the same player in the 21st, 29th and 42nd minutes of the first half, which led the referee to interrupt the game to make the announcement aimed at the termination of the aforementioned discriminatory chant.
"The transmission of more detailed elements has also been arranged by the federal prosecutor, both with regards to the actual positioning (sector or sub sector)…of the supporters within which the leaders of this chant were placed, also regarding the active collaboration of Lazio in identifying the subjects involved in this discriminatory event, for the purpose of the possible adoption of further measures by this judge regarding the incident, and in any case also in relation to the evaluation of the possible recidivism."
This was not the first occasion Balotelli has been the target of abuse since returning to hometown club Brescia at the start of the season.
In November, the former Manchester City star kicked a ball into the stands and threatened to walk off the pitch after being subjected to monkey noises during a match against Hellas Verona.
