English police urged Uefa to reschedule Friday night Prague game amid fan fears - 08/10/2019
Source : https://www.theguardian.com/
The national police lead officer for football, Mark Roberts, has revealed that he wrote to Uefa to urge it not to stage England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Czech Republic in Prague this Friday night, amid fears the timing would increase the extent of drunken and antisocial behaviour from travelling fans.
Roberts made no secret of his disappointment at how the plea was overlooked and now the police, the Football Association and the Czech authorities must prepare for the prospect of flashpoints. The fixture has been designated as high risk, with the Czech police ready to deploy an unprecedented number of officers, including English-speaking “anti-conflict units” and, if necessary, anti-riot units.
The England Supporters Travel Club will have 3,731 of its members in Prague while 3,130 will be in Sofia on Monday week for the game against Bulgaria. But it is expected that around 6,000 England fans will be in Prague – a city that is well-known for its cheap beer and nightlife. Never before would so many supporters have come to Prague at a single time.
When England played the Netherlands in a friendly on a Friday night in Amsterdam during March 2018, there were more than 100 arrests and condemnation for the appalling behaviour of the travelling fans. The National Police Chiefs’ Council said at the time that it had “significant” concerns about playing the game on a Friday night but they had not been consulted. The FA said it has no say in the scheduling of Uefa tournament matches.
“I wrote to Uefa asking them to reconsider the Friday night kick-off,” Roberts said. “That’s not something we’ve been able to do. It is harder when you’re dealing with them [Uefa] and, particularly, when you’re playing away. I think it’s unfortunate because you can foresee the risk. We’d much rather prevent a situation developing than try to manage it on the night and regret it afterwards.”
The police and FA have done much to tackle violent hooliganism but the issue these days relates more to antisocial behaviour or, as Roberts puts it, the “stag-do mentality and the problem that we have with alcohol consumption”. He describes how many of the offenders are younger men with no criminal records who, as such, are difficult to spot and police. They only reveal themselves as troublemakers when they drink to excess and, even then, sometimes do not think they have done much wrong.
Roberts gives an example from June’s Nations League finals in Portugal when England fans caused mayhem in Porto, drawing responses from baton-wielding officers. “I saw one young Tottenham fan who was outside one of the bars,” Robert said. “He was drunk and joining in with all the songs that we’re familiar with. He was not throwing bottles but others were and the situation escalated. A couple of days later, I saw that lad and he’d been out to buy his mum a little present. It was wrapped up in paper. Yet he’d been a part of that group and if he’d have got batoned, he’d have been horrified. So would his mum. He’s there with the stag-do mentality. They don’t always realise the risks of what they’re doing.”
Roberts spells out the implications for the respectful England fans – all of them risk being tarred with the same brush and receiving harsh treatment. He makes the point about what happened before June’s Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands in Guimarães, when two turnstiles were not working, a crowd built up and there was a bit of pushing but nobody did anything wrong. Then, the riot police charged in with batons.
“What we saw was the Portuguese police probably reaching a threshold of their patience,” Roberts said. “It’s the decent England fans who picked up the tab for the people who had been drunk and abusive for a number of days. It’s starting to influence the way they are policed.”
Roberts has encouraged the Czech police to take “low-level action early doors” against individual trouble-makers before large mobs build up while the FA has launched a campaign called “Report that idiot”. Anyone witnessing antisocial behaviour can report it by emailing or by calling or texting.

Celtic urge fans to stop using pyro at Parkhead or risk further UEFA sanction as they face charges over Cluj fireworks - 09/10/2019
Source : https://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/
Celtic have urged their fans to stop setting off fireworks and pyro during European ties after they were charged with another UEFA offence.
The Hoops face another sanction after supporters let off flares in the Green Brigade area of the ground.
Last month they were forced to pay £11,000 for two charges in their 4-1 win over AIK.
It was the 17th time Celts have been fined by the governing body since 2007.
In an official club statement, the club begged fans to stop or risk further, harsher punishment.
The statement read: "Following the latest UEFA charge against the Club for the use of fireworks at Celtic Park, it is with real disappointment and frustration that the Club needs to appeal again for this behaviour to stop.
"UEFA’s stance on the issue of pyrotechnics is unequivocal and very well-known.
"The Club has been sanctioned on numerous occasions and yet, very disappointingly, this behaviour by a small minority persists.
"The serious safety concerns associated with such behaviour are obvious, as is the reputational damage which this behaviour and these charges have on the Club. In addition, the numerous financial penalties placed on Celtic continue to come out the pockets of supporters who invest in the Club.
"Celtic will be introducing further measures in order to deal with this behaviour. It has to stop.
"The club does not want it, our supporters do not want it and UEFA will continue to punish the Club whenever it occurs as it is a clear breach of their regulations. It really is as simple as that.
"Given the number of repeated offences, we should also be very aware that there could be further, very serious repercussions which could have hugely detrimental consequences for the Club and our supporters.
"It is hugely unfair that the enjoyment of Celtic matches could potentially be affected by the negative behaviour of a tiny minority.
"Additionally, in the interests of all our supporters’ safety, it is imperative that all fans when attending matches at Celtic Park use their designated seat. This is important in ensuring a safe environment."
It continued: "Our supporters are fantastic and we greatly value the huge contribution you make to the Club. It is the positive support of our fans which makes the difference, week in, week out.
"Our win against CFR Cluj last Thursday represented another great European night on the pitch for the Club.
"Supported brilliantly by our fans, the team were magnificent in driving us to top of our Europa League group. This should be our focus.
"Neil Lennon, our players and our backroom team will be doing all they can to deliver a similar performance against Lazio.
"The Club and our supporters need to work together to make sure pyrotechnics and any other form of unsafe behaviour have no place at our matches."

UEFA punishes Slovakian club for fan racism in Europa League - 09/10/2019
Source : https://www.foxsports.com/
Celtic have urged their fans to stop setting off fireworks and pyro during European ties after they were charged with another UEFA offence.
UEFA has ordered Slovan Bratislava to play a Europa League game against Wolverhampton in an empty stadium as punishment for fans’ racism.
UEFA says its appeals panel dismissed the Slovakian club’s challenge against the one-game stadium closure, which is punishment for fans making racist chants and a banner at a playoff game in August, against PAOK of Greece.
The closure will apply when Wolves visits on Oct. 24.
UEFA also fined Slovan 50,000 euros, plus 41,750 euros for other charges including fan disorder.

One of Grimsby Town's worst football hooligans banned for another five years after Port Vale violence - 09/10/2019
Source : https://www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/
Lewis Ward has a significant history of disorder at football matches spanning nearly 10 years, Grimsby Crown Court heard.
Most of that time he has been under football banning orders.
Ward 28, of Parris Place, Cleethorpes admitted disorder at the notorious Grimsby Town v Port Vale game.
A total of 26 fans were arrested after Grimsby scored an equaliser toward the end of the match on Saturday, March 10 last year and Vale supporters climbed onto the pitch to taunt the home fans.
Ward has convictions for four previous offences, including being locked up for 15 months at Stafford Crown Court in 2010 and given a six-year football banning order.
He breached the order in 2012 by attending a game at Liverpool.
Ward also had a conviction in 2017 for assaulting police and in July last year for being drunk while trying to enter a sports ground.
He had been fined £796 with £620 costs by Cambridge magistrates and given a three-year football banning order.
At court, Judge Roger Thomas QC said: "This history is concerning."
Prosecuting Charlotte Baines said Ward's actions were caught on a YouTube video taken by another fan which showed the defendant holding a metal pole item above his head.
"A few seconds later he returned back from the hoarding (pitch side)," she said.
For Ward, Richard Lunn told the court there had been no repetition of that behaviour. He is self-employed and has a home life.
The judge imposed a two month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered him to carry out 160 hours unpaid work.
He also ordered costs of £1,800.
Judge Thomas QC said: "He needs to be kept away from football. When he is there he misbehaves."
He said it was "a litany of football-related disorder."
Addressing Ward, the judge added: "It is difficult to understand when you are a fit young man, of 28 years, in work. You like football. There is nothing wrong with that. At football games people get excited about a match and their team. What is wrong with that? But with you it then spills into violence . Your behaviour at football matches is appalling and it happens time and time again."
He said: "It crosses the line from football enthusiasm into criminal behaviour."
The football banning order bars him from attending home and away games, and from a designated area of town when there is a match on.
The ban further applies to international matches at home and abroad.

England fans are warned they could face £200 on-the-spot fine for drunken behaviour at Euro 2020 qualifier against Czech Republic in Prague
England supporters are being warned they could face a £200 on-the-spot fine for drunken behaviour amid fears of trouble in Prague.
Almost 3,800 Three Lions fans have bought tickets for Friday night's Euro 2020 qualifier against the Czech Republic, with more expected to travel.
The late kick-off time of 8.45pm and the city's party reputation have led to fears of a repeat of ugly scenes witnessed on recent trips to Amsterdam, Dortmund and Porto.
The fixture also coincides with a national day of mourning for the country's most famous singer, Karel Gott, who died last week, and travelling fans have been told to be respectful of mourners.
The Football Association is asking England supporters to 'report that idiot' if they see anti-social behaviour, while police have urged those going to the game to not 'embarrass themselves'.
Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts, the National Police Chiefs' Council's Football Policing Lead, said British officers are on the ground to help local police to deal with any troublemakers.
'The Czechs are very keen on early intervention, which is good, because our advice will be try to stop situations developing into something where you've got several hundred people, perhaps in drink,' he said.
'It's far better to move in early, try to have a chat with people, make sure people are behaving,
'The Czechs have said they will enforce the £200 on-the spot-fine for people being drunk in the street.
'Whilst everyone who has a drink clearly isn't going to be dealt with that way, if there are people who are getting a bit out of hand, starting to act in a disorderly manner, there is that option and they could face a fine on the spot.'

England supporters clash with police in Prague ahead of game
England supporters have been involved in violent clashes with local police in Prague.
The ugly scenes erupted just before 7pm local time when some Three Lions fans began throwing bottles towards armed officers in riot gear.
A recorded warning was played in English before the Czech police advanced on the fans, who had taken over a small square in the city’s Old Town.
Stun grenades were fired by police as fans were forced back through a small archway as bottles continued to be thrown.
About a dozen men were forced into a corner and made to lie face down, while another was seen being pinned to the floor nearby as officers secured the scene.
Until night fell, there had been little trouble in the city, with police involvement limited to telling fans to remove flags from buildings.
Hundreds of fans took over a small square in the city’s Old Town, chanting and drinking.
One local resident fought back against the noise, producing a megaphone to protest from his second-floor window.
Almost 3,800 Three Lions fans bought tickets for Friday night’s clash although more are believed to have travelled.
