Scotland : Celtic ban 128 of their OWN fans after vandalism and pyrotechnics at Motherwell - 10/12/2013
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk
Celtic have banned 128 of their fans from all their home and away matches after a section of their support caused £10,000 of damage at Motherwell. The Scottish Professional Football League could now take action against Celtic when its match delegate's report lands at Hampden and reveals the extent of the vandalism and pyrotechnic displays which marred their win at Motherwell. An estimated £10,000 worth of damage was caused to seating in the middle lower area of the South Stand at Fir Park, just above where a Green Brigade banner was displayed.
A Celtic statement read: 'Following events on Friday evening at Fir Park Stadium, Celtic Football Club today announced that it has issued precautionary suspensions against 128 individuals preventing them attending matches involving Celtic, pending further investigation. 'These suspensions will cover matches at Celtic Park and away matches. 'In addition, the Club will be relocating around 250 season book holders in Section 111 to other areas within the stadium, or offering refunds covering the remainder of the season to those who do not wish to be relocated. 'Events such as those on Friday night do not represent the Celtic support or the Club. These events were an embarrassment to our great football club and are absolutely indefensible. 'It is clear that there is an element which has no hesitation in bringing Celtic’s name into disrepute.
'This is something the Club will not tolerate and we therefore have no other option but to take this action. 'We will not allow the great name of Celtic to be damaged in this way any more - our supporters deserve more than this. 'While recent events are very regrettable, we would like to thank our many thousands of fans for the wonderful, positive backing which they continue to give to Celtic. 'We are sure these supporters will understand the position which the Club is in and we are also sure they will unite with the Club as we move forward.
'Celtic Football Club is in excellent shape on and off the field. 'The Club is in a very safe and strong position and we have a young, exciting team working hard to deliver quality football and success for our supporters, as they did on Friday evening with a magnificent performance. 'This is what we want to be talking about and this is what we want to celebrate. 'Celtic has a proud 125-year history and fundamental to that history have been our fans. Our supporters enjoy a wonderful reputation earned across many years, many families and many generations. 'This is something we must protect vigorously.'
While Celtic are preparing to take on Barcelona in their final Champions League game of the season on Wednesday, the Nou Camp clash has, for now, been overshadowed by scenes Celtic described as 'appalling'. A flare was let off in the same area before the game while two green smoke bombs were thrown into the goalmouth, one of them landing yards from Hoops goalkeeper Fraser Forster. A missile also flew from the Celtic support not far over the head of the England goalkeeper just after Kris Commons opened the scoring in Celtic's highly-impressive 5-0 Scottish Premiership triumph.
Police Scotland is looking into the 'significant damage' caused to seats and it counted 18 smoke bombs, three fireworks and one flare were set off. No arrests were made inside Fir Park. Celtic have launched their own investigation while the Green Brigade fans group has also condemned the vandalism and admitted it should have self-policed its section more effectively.
A Green Brigade statement read: 'Firstly we do not condone the breaking of seats nor do we welcome pyrotechnics being thrown on the park. We as a group are as disappointed as any about such indefensible behaviour and regret that it happened on our watch. 'Whilst it was not members of our group behaving in this manner, we accept the fact that these actions took place behind our banner in what was an unofficial "Green Brigade section" and furthermore that the fans within this area are associated to our group whether they are members or not.
'It is particularly disappointing given how hard we have worked as a member organisation of Fans Against Criminalisation and of our own accord to fight the criminalisation of football supporters as we realise the damage that the events of Friday night could have on our efforts to challenge the continued harassment of Celtic fans by Police Scotland. 'Ultimately, we should have had greater control of the bodies present within our block and our failure to do so has resulted in events which are unacceptable and we will strive to ensure that such scenes are not repeated.'
The main Celtic fans' group, the Affiliation of Registered Celtic Supporters Clubs, expressed frustration at the actions. A statement read: 'We should be discussing another devastating Celtic performance on the pitch instead we are talking about disappointments off the field. 'Let's make no mistake that incidents like (Friday) night at Fir Park and the publicity that this attracts makes any negotiations regarding ticket pricing, safe standing and policing at games more difficult.
'Any payment for damage and fines that are the responsibility of the club are ultimately paid by us. This is a measurable cost. The damage to our reputation as a support is unquantifiable. 'In a time when we are fighting to reduce ticket prices, fighting against the Offensive Behaviour Act and trying to make the game more attractive to the thousands who fans who have lost interest (Friday) night is nothing short of disheartening and does nothing to help.'

Brazil President Calls for Police Action to Curb Football Violence - 09/12/2013
Source : http://online.wsj.com
Criticism Follows Brawl Between Rivals as Country Prepares for World Cup
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Monday called for more police action to curb violence inside football stadiums as the country prepares to host next year's World Cup.
Ms. Rousseff's criticism of soccer violence followed a clash Sunday between rival fans that caused the match between Atlético Paranaense and Vasco da Gama to be halted about 17 minutes into the match. Three people were taken to hospital after the brawl, and one fan remained under observation Monday. Three Vasco fans were arrested, according to police.
The game resumed almost an hour later, with Vasco losing 5-1 and getting relegated to the second division, but by then, the horrifying images of fans stomping on one person's head were flashing around the world.
"The country of football can no longer live with this violence at soccer stadiums," Ms. Rousseff said. "We need to have a police presence in the stadiums, arrests in cases of violence, and the creation of a police section for fans so that scenes like the ones we saw yesterday are curtailed."
The problems at Sunday's match were largely blamed on a dispute between the state government and soccer authorities over policing costs. Atlético President Mario Celso Petraglia said the state government requires clubs to pay for security inside stadiums, and orders police to remain on the outside. Police were belatedly sent into the stadium on Sunday only after the fighting had spiraled out of the control of a private security firm.
State authorities confirmed the decision, and blamed Atlético for failing to put sufficient security measures in place.
Experts warn that violence at football stadiums in Brazil is on the rise again at a time when the country is preparing to host next year's World Cup soccer tournament. An explosion in violence in the 1990s had been tackled by reinforcing police presence inside stadiums, but the trend appears to be reversing. How much impact this will have on next year's World Cup, which kicks off June 12, is unclear.
Thirty people have been killed this year in clashes involving soccer fans, up from 23 in 2012, according to Mauricio Murad, a sociology professor at Universidade Salgado de Oliveira in Rio de Janeiro and the author of a book about soccer violence.
Experts say fights have intensified as more stadiums use private security to control crowds instead of police. Also, with several key stadiums under construction or renovation for the World Cup, teams have had to play at sites that are unaccustomed to handling large sporting events.
Brazilian courts have responded by handing down more and larger fines when fans misbehave. Through the middle of November of this year, clubs in Brazil's first and second divisions were fined a total of 310,200 Brazilian reais ($134,000) for serious cases of violence or other abuses inside stadiums, up from 231,800 reais during all of last year, according to the Brazilian court that handles sport-related cases.
While fines have increased, the number of times clubs have had their stadiums banned for home games fell to 17 from 24 last year, according to the court which began compiling records in 2012. That kind of sanction hits teams in the pocketbook, while rowdy and violent fans often at the center of fights go unpunished, partly because of difficulties authorities have identifying them.
"The problem with violence in soccer stadiums in Brazil is the fact that there are no penalties for violent fans when they're arrested," said Mr. Murad.

Police appeal after red smoke grenade mars Bristol City's FA Cup win over Tamworth
POLICE are looking to identify football fans who let off a smoke grenade which hospitalised a steward at Bristol City’s match with Tamworth at the weekend.
Two red smoke grenades were let off in the away terraces at the FA Cup fixture at the Lamb Ground in Tamworth on Sunday.
A 23-year-old female steward suffered smoke inhalation and respiratory problems. She was taken to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield for treatment and was discharged later the same evening.
The match, which kicked off at 2pm, was attended by over 2,800 fans, including over 750 Bristol City supporters.
An investigation into the incident is under way and local officers are reviewing CCTV from the club and working with the Avon and Somerset Police to identify the suspects.
Gary Lote, football liaison officer for Staffordshire Police, said: “We are determined to identify the offenders of this incident which resulted in a young female steward requiring hospital treatment.
“I would urge anyone with any information to contact me or Crimestoppers.
“This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable and dangerous. It could have had serious consequences for innocent members of the public including families with young children."

Police probe claims 'minority of Boro fans' ripped up copies of the Qu’ran at Birmingham City
An investigation involving police and Middlesbrough Football Club has been launched following allegations Boro fans engaged in religious discrimination.
Online reports suggested a “minority” of Boro fans ripped up copies of the Qu’ran - the religious text for followers of Islam - during the club’s 2-2 draw with Birmingham on Saturday.
The allegations are now the subject of police investigation, with Cleveland Police reviewing CCTV footage of the away crowd at St Andrews.
Middlesbrough Football Club has also vowed to ban for life anyone convicted.
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “We are aware of an incident at the match at the weekend and we, along with our colleagues at West Midlands Police, are investigating.
“Inquiries are well under way including examination of CCTV from within the football stadium.
“Any incident such as this is taken extremely seriously by police.
"We will not tolerate such behaviour and it will be fully and thoroughly investigated and those responsible will be brought to justice.”
A Boro spokesman said the club - a “strong supporter of football’s pledge to eradicate racism and intolerance in all its forms” - was aware of an alleged incident involving a “minority” of Boro fans.
“We are keeping in close contact with West Midlands and Cleveland Police as well as our counterparts at Birmingham City as the investigation proceeds,” he said.
The Gazette’s Boro correspondent Anthony Vickers said: “Football has put a lot of time and effort into ridding itself of racism over the last 20 years, with the fans being right at the forefront of that through the fanzines movement.
“Organisations like the Football Supporters Association policing themselves are helping drive racism out of the game.
“It’s the duty of all fans to oppose it wherever it rears its head.”
