England : Leicester City fan gets three year match ban for setting off smoke grenade - 23/12/2013

Source : http://www.meltontimes.co.uk

A football fan who set off a smoke grenade at a Leicester City match has been banned from attending league and England games for three years.

Joseph Williams (23), of Kirby Lane, Melton, admitted throwing the smoke grenade at or towards the playing area at the King Power Stadium on August 11, 2013.

Williams had been sitting among Leeds United fans in an area allocated to away supporters.

He admitted the offence in court, and on Monday, December 16, Leicester Magistrates fined him £240 with £85 prosecution costs and a £24 victim’ surcharge.

He was also given a three year football banning order which prevents him from going to Premier League, Football League or international matches for the next three years. Williams will also have to surrender his passport before England play abroad.

Chief Superintendent Chris Haward, who leads Leicestershire Police’s football policing operation, said: “The use of flares and any pyrotechnics in football stadiums is extremely dangerous, and serious injuries have occurred elsewhere in the country. It is also very distressing and disturbing for those fans who have come to watch the game.

“Together with Leicester City Football Club we will be taking a very strict approach to anyone identified using flares and we will seek to prosecute them wherever possible.”

A spokesman for Leicester City Football Club said: “The welfare of supporters at King Power Stadium is the club’s highest priority and we will continue to support Leicestershire Police in its efforts to prevent supporter safety being compromised.”

England : Port Vale fan banned from football for three years for his part in Wolves match violence - 24/12/2013

Source : : http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk

PORT Vale fan Liam Kelsall has been banned from football matches for three years for his part in violent clashes following the club's game with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 22-year-old caused £200 of damage to the door of a taxi firm where two Wolves fans had sought refuge after being chased by Vale supporters.

Fans of both teams were involved in clashes with police following the match at Vale Park on August 31.

Kelsall was one of 14 Vale supporters who appeared before magistrates earlier this month.

Yesterday he was fined £250 and ordered to pay £200 compensation to Magnum Taxis after he admitted causing criminal damage by repeatedly kicking a door at the firm's Burslem base.

He was also handed a three-year football banning order.

North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard two Wolves fans ran into Magnum Taxis and hid in the toilets after coming under abuse from 'around 10' Vale fans.

Kelsall, of Furlong Passage, Burslem, was heard by a member of staff to shout, 'We know they're in there, open the door'.

Prosecutor Andrew Bodger said: "The staff member told him to leave, but the defendant continued to shout and began kicking the door.

"He kicked it about five times. He then left after being persuaded by a friend."

The court heard Kelsall phoned the taxi firm the next day and admitted he was responsible for the damage, and went on to admit the offence to police.

He told officers he joined in with around 15 Vale fans who were chasing a group of four Wolves supporters.

Helen Webster, defending, said he should not be banned as this was his first conviction for football-related disorder.

She added: "This was a unique incident and not something that's likely to happen again."

But District Judge David Taylor said: "You, a young man with next to no previous record, suddenly joined in with this incident.

"It was a situation that must have been plainly obvious would cause a risk of criminal offences being committed, and also cause considerable fear to those being chased.

"If you don't know why you acted in this way it's quite likely that, given that situation again, you may well act that way again."

Kelsall is banned from attending any football match in England and Wales for three years, and must surrender his passport to police ahead of certain international matches.

He must also stay out of any town or city where Vale are playing an away match for six hours either side of kick-off, other than in Birmingham or London, where he must not go within 10 miles of the ground.

As well as being ordered to pay a fine of £250 and £200 compensation, he must also pay £85 court costs and £25 victim surcharge.

England : Crystal Palace and Brighton fans punished for Caledonian Road violence - 26/12/2013

Source : http://www.islingtongazette.co.uk

Nine football fans have been found guilty of violent disorder following an organised mass brawl in Caledonian Road.

The violence, which took place on the evening of November 10 2012, was between a group of around 60 Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion supporters.

The two sets of fans met after they had been drinking in separate pubs in the area – squaring off in the middle of the road and throwing glass bottles, litter bins and even shop display boards.

Several separate fights erupted and the violence only stopped when the police arrived, causing the thugs to run off.

After a thorough and lengthy investigation coordinated by officers from Islington Borough and Operation Arrowtip a total of 20 men were arrested in connection with the incident resulting in the charging of 12.

The longest sentence was handed out to, Richard Kepner, 46, of Church Lane Arundal, West Sussex, who was given a 14 month prison sentence and a six year Football Banning Order.

Superintendent Andy Barnes, from the Specialist Crime and Operations Directorate, said: “The MPS has worked closely with colleagues from Kent, Surrey and Sussex Police to bring these offenders to justice.

“The custodial sentences so far handed out by the court to individuals together with the banning orders shows how seriously football related violence is taken by those organisations within the criminal justice system.”

Australia : Football fans in Melbourne CBD riot face five-year ban from matches - 29/12/2013

Source : http://www.heraldsun.com.au

ROGUE football fans involved in a brawl outside a city pub before an A-League game this weekend will be banned from all Australian matches for the next five years.

Season 13/14 - December - Page 6 878109australia

A NSW man, 23, has been charged over the ruckus, in which dozens of supporters from the Western Sydney Wanderers pelted each other with rocks, threw chairs and wielded metal bars.

A second man, 29, also from NSW, has been charged for allegedly setting off flares inside AAMI Park during the Wanderers' clash with Melbourne Victory.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Andrew Crisp warned more arrests would follow as investigators continued to trawl through "very good CCTV footage".

A number of fans covered their faces with T-shirts and bandannas.

The footage shows rioters throwing rocks and other debris at each other.

Fights also broke out in the street outside Bourke St's Royal Melbourne Hotel from 3.40pm.

Some were filmed trying to hit each other with metal bars.

The fans were drinking inside the pub when they clashed with Melbourne Victory supporters.

The riot moved to the street, where flares were set off, chairs thrown and glasses smashed, leaving one man in his early 20s admitted to hospital with upper-body injuries.

The rebel behaviour continued at AAMI Park, where five flares and a number of firecrackers were ignited during the 1-1 draw.

A-League head Damien De Bohun said the league would not hesitate to ban the culprits. "Anyone who is found guilty of that type of behaviour will be banned for five years," he said.

"Not just A-League fixtures, but any fixtures of the FFA (Football Federation Australia). So if they were planning a trip to Brazil for the World Cup, that's over as well."

Mr De Bohun said the league had been "very happy" with the behaviour of fans so far this season, with just 14 people evicted from Victory matches - a significant reduction on last season.

Eight more were thrown out on Saturday.

This was also the first time flares had been smuggled into an A-League ground this season, he said.

A Western Sydney Wanderers spokesman did not return calls for the club to comment yesterday.

Assistant commissioner Crisp said it was important to remember that the majority of the 22,000-strong crowd had behaved themselves.

Police plea after steward punched at St Johnstone v Dundee United match

The incident occurred in the Ormond South Stand at around 2.20pm as United supporters were being moved to ease congestion.

It is believed the steward was punched in the face.

United fans have complained about the organisation at McDiarmid.

A large turnout of visiting fans filled both the North and Ormond stands and meant some had to be moved to the Main Stand.

Some fans reported missing the first 20 minutes of the match, which Saints won 3-0.

Fleetwood vow to ban any fans involved in Morecambe trouble

Police have launched an investigation after away fans threw punches at stewards after the Shrimps’ 1-0 win.

Globe Arena stewards were attacked by a group of around 15 Fleetwood supporters just after the final whistle blew with one young male steward having to be helped away following the scuffle in The Bay Radio Stand.

Town chief executive Steve Curwood condemned the actions of those involved and said the club were helping police with their enquiries.

He said: “The club will not tolerate a small number of idiots trying to bring down the reputation of the club and damaging all the hard work which goes into growing our fan base and encouraging more supporters to travel to away fixtures.

“I have been in detailed contact with the police and will meet with them on Monday to assist further with their enquires.

“The club will ban any of those found to be involved.”

Glen Cooper, former editor of The Visitor, witnessed the incident.

“Some of the Fleetwood fans had been chanting ‘we’re going on the pitch’ during the game,” said Glen.

“A few started going down the steps of the terraces but our stewards calmed it down. Then at the final whistle a group of them came towards the front, once again chanting they were going on the pitch.

“The stewards were pushing them back and then five or six ran from the back and started laying into the stewards, swinging punches.

“We don’t normally get this sort of thing at the Globe Arena and to be fair we’ve never had any problem before against Fleetwood.

“It was a good atmosphere, and from their point of view it’s a shame it should be spoilt in this way. The vast majority of Fleetwood fans supported them well.”

Morecambe FC director Rod Taylor said the club were helping police with their enquiries.

The injuries to stewards were minor. Four men, all from the Fleetwood area, have been arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.

Aston Villa - Swansea City - 28/12/2013

Source : http://www.birminghammail.co.uk

Three arrested after 'Football Factory' violence at Aston Villa match

Three men have been arrested after Aston Villa and Swansea fans brawled during ugly violence reminiscent, said one horrified mum, of scenes from hooligan film The Football Factory.

The mum said her young children had suffered nightmares after seeing fans fighting with “bottles and sticks” after Villa’s draw with the Welsh side on Saturday.

The mum-of-two also claimed her family witnessed a man being stamped on.

On the Aston Villa “news and scores” Facebook page, she called for the violence to be thoroughly investigated.

West Midlands Police yesterday confirmed disorder had broken out near to the Aston Hotel before the final whistle was blown.

On twitter, Aston Villa police unit said three men had been arrested for affray and enquires are “ongoing”.

The mother, took to the social networking site after the game and said: “My kids are really, really upset by what they witnessed this afternoon, that’s not right.

“They left the game five minutes before the final whistle and walked straight into what can only be described as a scene from The Football Factory.

“At least 25 adults armed with bottles and sticks laid into each other just yards in front of them.

“People were screaming but they still carried on. My son has already had one nightmare tonight.

“I’ve had to simplify it and say the naughty people are in prison and Santa won’t come to them ever again.

“To see a lifeless man on the floor being stamped on is a vision my husband and 15-year-old daughter will struggle to erase from their memory.”

James Matthews, another fan on the site, posted: “I walked past the Aston Hotel as it happened.

“A group of fans were getting battered.”

Police acted quickly to rubbish claims an individual was stabbed during the trouble.

England : Barrow director 'disappointed' at fans' silence to police - 30/12/2013

Source : http://www.birminghammail.co.uk

BARROW AFC director John Mackay has criticised some Bluebirds fans for refusing to assist detectives investigating an outbreak of hooliganism during their cup tie at Atherstone Town.

Home fans sparked the disgraceful scenes, marring AFC’s 4-0 victory over Atherstone during their FA Cup third qualifying round clash on October 12.

Mackay has been in “regular contact” with Warwickshire Police who have asked the director to contact witnesses, while also giving him regular updates on the progress of the investigation.

So far 29 individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.

And Mackay confirmed in Saturday’s AFC matchday programme – as part of his “View from the Boardroom” column – that Atherstone have been hit with a £350 fine by the Football Association after being found guilty of “not keeping control of their fans”.

Mackay reassured fans that detectives are thoroughly probing the matter and added in his column: “The police have been talking to many individuals who attended that day while also coming up to Barrow to take statements.

“I thank all those who have who have supported the police in their efforts to gain the evidence to be able to prosecute but at the same time I am very disappointed with key witnesses from the Barrow fans who refused to assist the police.

“If everyone took the same stand then police would have difficulty in gaining the outcome we all expect of these individuals being dealt with by the law.”

Mackay says that thugs who took a flag belonging to a Barrow supporter and burned it have been identified and been made to pay the owner compensation for the damage.

With regard to those people who have been arrested he also stated that the police hope to consult the Crown Prosecution Service “around the middle of January to start proceedings with a court date around the middle of February”.

Three Manchester United fans charged after Carrow Road trouble

Four Manchester United fans were arrested during Norwich City’s festive fixture against the Premier League champions at the weekend.

A group of boisterous aways fans were captured on film chanting and throwing a bin around at half time in the Jarrold stand at Carrow Road, which was posted on to YouTube.

In a separate incident, a 38-year-old man was arrested outside the club shortly after 5pm on Saturday when the suspect allegedly threatened another man while in possession of a knife.

The suspect was restrained by an off-duty police officer until officers arrived and arrested him on suspicion of possessing a knife in a public place. A knife was seized at the scene.

The man was questioned at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre and has been released on bail until Wednesday January 8 while enquiries continue.

Meanwhile, two men aged 17 and 23 were arrested following an incident of disorder in the concourse in the away section of the Jarrold Stand shortly after 4pm.

The 17-year-old, who is from Manchester but cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with being drunk in a sports ground and will appear at Norwich Youth Court on January 14.

Ryan Halsworth, 23 and of Woodburn Avenue, Earlsheaton, in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, has been charged with being drunk in a sports ground, obstructing a police officer and threatening behaviour. He was released on bail to appear at Norwich Magistrates Court on January 13.

A 36-year-old man was arrested outside the ground at about 4.35pm after attempting to pull a mounted officer from a horse.

Sean Cross, of no fixed address, has been charged with assaulting a police officer and being drunk and disorderly. He has been released on conditional bail to appear before Norwich Magistrates Court on January 13.

A spokesman for Norwich City said: “The club is aware of a video posted on social media of an incident in the away section of the Jarrold Stand concourse. As always, we are in full communication with Norfolk Constabulary and will of course work with them to assist with any enquiries they carry out in relation to incidents at our stadium.”

Wigan Athletic - Burnley FC - 29/12/2013

Terror as pub is besieged by rampaging football ‘fans’

POLICE are investigating after rival football thugs laid siege to a Wigan pub.

Security staff locked the doors from the inside as more than 30 Burnley “fans” tried to force their way into the historic Bird I’th’ Hand in Gidlow after they were refused a drink before the Championship tie with Latics at the DW Stadium.

Regulars were forced to take cover behind the bar as the hooligans attempted to kick in both doors in to gain entrance.

Police were called, but as the staff and drinkers awaited their arrival, the interlopers then punched through a window of historic significance, showering pub-goers inside with shards of glass - as they goaded regulars to come out and confront them.

But the gang, described as men in their late teens and early 20s, then scattered as they heard the sirens of two approaching police vans, disappearing down a number of side streets.

GMP confirmed today that they were studying the pub’s CCTV coverage in conjunction with colleagues from Lancashire Constabulary in an effort to see if they could identify any of the Burnley fans involved as known trouble makers.

The pub’s owner, Contact One of Morecambe, said that the attack had shocked the all-female bar staff.

But they were proud of the calm way they had acted to keep their regulars away from harm.

The pub has just celebrated its first anniversary after being refurbished.

Originally purchased for conversion into flats, the developers had a change of heart after a massive campaign by the largely-terraced community which surround the “hen hole,” as it is fondly known, to save their local.

Operations manager Denise Bennett said that trouble had erupted at about 2.20pm ahead of the 3pm match kick-off last Sunday.

She said: “The Bird is a popular pub pre-match although we are off the beaten track so don’t usually get caught up in this type thing.

“We had the usual mix: families, young children, mums and dads, enjoying themselves.

“But because it was a local derby match we were advised to pay for a doorman to control who came in.

“All of a sudden we saw this huge crowd of lads walking down the pavement and in the middle of the road heading towards us and ran in quickly and locked the doors from the inside.

“They surrounded the pub shouting and yelling and trying to kick the doors down, literally, with their boots, so we called the police and they said they would send officers down as soon as possible.

“One of them then put his first straight through the vault window, shattering glass everywhere inside the pub.

“Many of them had their hoodies up and it was a really frightening experience.

“They were just complete vandals looking for trouble. It was a horrible thing to see and be caught up in. It’s an all-girl team at our pub but they handled the situation really calmly and we are very proud of them and the doorman.”

Particularly upsetting from a damage point of view was the Edwardian acid-etched “Outdoor Sales” window in the classic former Walkers Brewery pub.

Denise said: “The window that was smashed in is one of the originals in the pub which has been there for more than 100 years and has survived two world wars and never even had a crack in it before these idiots arrived, which is such a shame.”

Scotland : Dundee United - St Johnstone - 29/12/2013

Source : http://news.stv.tv

Football fans that acted in a disorderly manner, including shouting racist remarks and punching windows on a busy train, are being sought by police.

British Transport Police is appealing for information after the incident on the Perth to Dundee service on Sunday, December 29.

The large group of supporters, believed to have been returning from the St Johnstone versus Dundee United SPFL match, boarded the train at Perth around 6.45pm and during the journey to Dundee shouted remarks, including some of a racist nature.

They are also reported to have punched windows and the ceiling and jumped up and down the carriage.

Police said their behaviour left other passengers, including children, alarmed.

Detective Constable David McAllister, the BTP officer in charge of the enquiry, said: “This service was busy at the time and I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the disorder and can provide information which may help identify those responsible to contact me.”
