Thirteen arrests but no major kick-off at derby clash
Thirteen fans were arrested at today's local derby match between Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale.
The game, which saw the Alex lose 2-1 to their local rivals, went off without major incident.
More than 120 police officers were involved in the operation to ensure the safety of fans and local residents.
Superintendent Luke McDonnell said “The policing operation required co-operation with partners within our community – including local licencees, representatives from both clubs, Staffordshire Police and the British Transport Police to ensure that the fixture went ahead without significant incident. Where there were pockets of disorder, the individuals responsible were dealt with robustly to ensure the safety of other match-goers and the local community was not unduly compromised. Thirteen arrests were made in total, for a variety of offences that included public order & pitch invasion".
Officers from Crewe Neighbourhood Policing Unit, supported by additional resources from across the force, provided a highly visible presence in the areas of Nantwich Road and Gresty Road, as well as inside the ground itself to support the stewarding operation.

Nine people were injured when St Etienne fans threw seats at local supporters at Nice's Allianz Arena stadium on Sunday, the French interior and sports ministries said.
An hour before the kick-off of the Ligue 1 game between Nice and Les Verts, away fans dismantled their seats and threw them towards the opposition supporters, a witness said.
Stadium stewards unsuccessfully tried to calm them down, with police then moving into the stands to remove the St Etienne fans, who numbered about 100.
One supporter was photographed hanging on to a stadium balcony and being assisted from above during the disturbances.
"Manuel Valls, the ministry of Interior, and Valerie Fourneyron, the sports ministry, condemn with severity the serious incidents that occurred before the Nice v St Etienne Ligue 1 game kickoff and during which nine were injured," the ministries said in a joint statement. The French League threatened a ban on travelling fans after the incident.
"Enough! The few cretins who claim to be supporters do not even realise they ruin the image of football," the French League (LFP) president Frédéric Thiriez said in a statement.
"I will ask a meeting with the ministry of Interior to discuss the supporters' trips to away games. If we don't succeed in resolving this problem it will end with a systematic ban on [supporters'] trips, which nobody wishes."

England : Wolves ‘fooligan’ faces match ban - 24/11/2013
Source : http://www.expressandstar.com
Four years ago he was dubbed a ‘fooligan’ after unsuccessfully trying to hide behind a woolly balaclava when an Express & Star photographer was taking his picture.
Now a Wolves fan has been told he faces a football banning order after he was spotted trying to provoke supporters of an opposing team.
Paul Gregory, of Auden Court in Perton, ran towards a group of Walsall fans with his arms raised in a threatening manner after Wolves Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash with Walsall at Molineux on September 3, a court was told.
Mr Michael Taylor, prosecuting, told Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court Gregory was amongst a group of around 40 Wolves fans spotted by police on the Ring Road at around 10pm .
Officers arrested Gregory a few minutes later outside the Moon Under Water pub on Lichfield Street.
Gregory, 32, admitted he was present at the scene but denied he had tried to cause any trouble.
He said: “I didn’t want to get caught up in it.
“The route to the train station was blocked off so I thought I would go for a glass of pop in the Moon Under Water.”
Defending, Ms Kavita Kaur, said: “Mr Gregory feels he is being victimised by the police who are looking for any excuse to ban him from going to football matches.”
Magistrates found Gregory guilty of a public order offence of using threatening behaviour with intent to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence.
Gregory was told by chairman of the bench Mr Stephen Butcher that Magistrates would be considering a football banning order.
He was bailed to appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court on November 27 for sentencing.
