Naples police on high alert for Marseille clash
Police in Naples are on high alert in anticipation of possible violent clashes surrounding the Champions League match between Serie A side Napoli and Marseille later Wednesday.
Over 800 visiting supporters have bought tickets for the Group F fixture, which has caught the attention of authorities in Italy following violence in Marseille two weeks ago when Napoli defeated the struggling French side 2-1.
Sporadic clashes in and around the stadium on October 22, when Napoli fans clashed with French police prior to kick-off, led to several arrests and some fans suffering minor injuries.
Inside Marseille's Velodrome stadium, Marseille fans unveiled banners aimed at provoking Napoli's hard-line 'ultras' and the violence resumed at half-time with Napoli fans launching rocket flares and ripped-up seats at their rivals.
On Thursday, close to 1000 police officers were deployed in Naples as visiting fans, 450 of whom arrived on three chartered flights from Marseille in the afternoon, touched down in the city.
Some French fans had already arrived at the San Paolo stadium four hours prior to kick-off, according to the latest reports, however they were met by a heavy police presence and were shepherded to the away fans' end of the ground.
Napoli, meanwhile, have called for their fans' best behaviour because their San Paolo ground is currently subject to a suspended 'closed doors' ban, meaning they could be forced to play their next league game at home in the event of violence.
High risk game in Napoli. Last night, eight italian ultras, from 21 to 39 years old, were arrested in the old part of town, with knives as they tried to attack a group of Marseille fans. Two Napoli fans were under stadium ban. Later, police intervened to protest 4 French who were attacked by local tifosi. Only one French was punched at his face. They were escorted back to their hotel.

Napoli fans attack Marseille bus
Napoli fans attacked the Marseille team bus and pelted it with stones on Wednesday, according to reports emanating from Italy.
Media reports in the peninsula claim that ahead of the sides' Champions League Group F game in Naples, home fans attacked the French outfit's bus with rocks and smashed a window in the process.
However, Marseille defender Souleymane Diawara said after the match that he did not notice the damage caused to their bus until after he had got off it.
"I did not hear anything because I was listening to music," the 34-year-old told RMC. "I did not see the broken window until I left the bus. When you're focused on the game, you don't notice anything around you.
"There was a great atmosphere at the stadium. However, everybody had told me that Naples would be hell, so I had expected an ever more hostile reception."
A OM fan bus, full of weapons, was stopped by the police. 55 fans were arrested.

England : Man from Odd Down in Bath charged with Bristol City-Rovers derby violence - 04/11/2013
Source : http://www.bathchronicle.co.uk
A man from Bath has been charged with violent disorder and affray following ugly scenes at a Bristol football derby two months ago.
After a coordinated series of raids on Wednesday, police last night charged 33 people in connection with disorder at the Bristol City-Bristol Rovers game in early September.
They will appear at Bristol Magistrates Court later this month.
During the Johnstone's Paint Trophy match between the two city football clubs on September 4 there was trouble immediately before the game and while play went on. At the end of the game, there was a pitch invasion and what police call “further isolated incidents” later in the evening.
James Bagnall, 25, of Shickle Grove, Odd Down, has been charged with violent disorder and affray, and will appear before the court on November 20.
A 25-year-old man from Batheaston, who was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence, has been released without charge.

Police feared that game especially because both teams never played each other for the last 37 last years. Police were right because supporters caused troubles. After the game, hundreds of Hannover fans tried to reach arch rivals and fronted police, using a water canon. Before that derby game, that water canon was also used against away hooligans who thrown bottles in direction of police. Forteen policemen were wounded and more than 50 supporters. Others were arrested. Police said, about 850 hooligans (B and C categories) were there for that game, including ones from Hamburg, Bielefeld, Kassel, Berlin (Hertha and Dynamo), Wien, Magdeburg, Mannheim and Basel.

Arrests, violence blight Hanover derby
Some 14 police officers were hurt and four football fans were arrested, with dozens more injured, during trouble before Hanover 96's goalless draw with Eintracht Braunschweig on Friday night.
Just 70 kilometres separate the two north German clubs and tensions ran high for the first Lower Saxony derby in the Bundesliga since April 1976, with promoted Braunschweig coming into the game bottom the league.
Police had deployed dozens of extra officers for the match at the HDI Arena where 47,200 fans had packed into the stadium.
Police used water cannons, batons and pepper spray on fans outside the stadium before kick-off in a bid to keep rival fans apart.
"Police officers had to deal with a significant potential for violence from both sides before the game," said police spokesman Guido Cyrson.
"Due to consistent intervention, we were successfully able to keep the fans apart and officers prevented things getting worse."
Around 850 hooligans, categorised "violent" or "violence-seeking", had been identified in advance of the game by police intelligence.
Violent football supporters from as far afield as Hamburg, Bielefeld, Kassel, Berlin and even Vienna were identified at the game, mixing with both sets of supporters.
During the 90 minutes of the match, both sets of fans set off, one of which burnt on the pitch.
"By doing this, they (the fans) have damaged themselves," fumed Hanover president Martin Kind.
"It's shameful and it's a level (of behaviour) that we cannot accept.
"The question has to be asked how so many pyrotechnics could be brought into the stadium. It is something we have to discuss. It can't go on like this."
The German Football Federation (DFB) are set to investigate.
A controversial set of security regulations, brought in last season by the German Football League (DFL), gives clubs the power to search fans suspected of carrying flares into the stadium.
Despite increased security, incidents of flares being set off at Bundesliga games remain commonplace.
