Police hunt 25 football hooligans after clash in Lincoln

Football hooligans who were involved in a clash in a Lincoln pub are being targeted by Lincolnshire Police.

Trouble flared between rival supporters before the Lincoln City and Luton Town match on October 6, in the Ritz pub on the High Street.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward as they search for between 20 and 25 football hooligans involved.

Operation Hartford has been launched to ensure that they are identified and arrested.

Furniture and glasses were thrown during the violent disorder and a number of people were physically assaulted when the violence broke out at around 1pm.

Two women were treated in hospital for minor injuries caused by flying glass.

The disturbance also spilled out into the High Street and Firth Road.

PC Andy Pearson said: “Two rival gangs clashed, one from Lincoln and one Luton.

"These are not football fans, they are simply hooligans and it is important that we identify all of the offenders and arrest them as quickly as possible.

“We need anyone who was in the pub or in the area to get in touch and help us with our enquiries as soon as possible.

"What took place was totally unacceptable on a busy Saturday afternoon when families are out trying to enjoy what the city has to offer.

“Over the last three years we have done a huge amount of proactive work to target thugs like this and that work will continue.

"It is essential that we send out a clear message to hooligans – you are not welcome in Lincoln.”

Sheffield Wednesday - Hull City - 06/10/2012

Source : http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk

Hull City fans who taunted and scuffled with police at Hillsborough were denied alcohol at half-time

TROUBLE flared at Hillsborough at the weekend because Hull City fans were denied alcohol at half time after taunting police, it has been claimed.

Tigers supporters were heard chanting "murderers" and "Justice for the 96" at officers policing Saturday's match.

Scuffles broke out on the West Stand concourse at half-time, apparently sparked when officers attempted to arrest a Hull City trouble-maker.

In total, two arrests – one for violent disorder and the other for drunkenness – were made.

Fans took to Twitter and other social media websites to condemn South Yorkshire Police for what some perceived as "heavy-handed" tactics.

Lifelong Tigers' fan Chris Smith, 63, who was at the game, said: "You could sense the atmosphere in the ground was building. It was pretty tense.

"I saw some scuffles between Hull City fans and the police on the concourse. It was a minority of fans involved."

Mr Smith, of Hornsea, a member of Hull City Official Supporters' Club, suggested fans had been angered by the decision to stop serving alcohol during the half-time break.

He said: "There was a lot of anti-South Yorkshire Police chanting over the Hillsborough disaster."

Mr Smith, who was present at the 1989 disaster, says he understood the anger of some supporters.

He said: "I can understand why they want to show solidarity with their fellow football supporters after the publication of the independent report into the Hillsborough disaster.

"But I did not feel comfortable hearing those kinds of chants.

"I certainly cannot condone violence. There is no place for it."

Mr Smith, who has been attending Hull City matches since the 1950s, said the situation was not helped by a large police presence and the amount of Hull City fans who attended.

"It is thought 2,000 fans made the trip," he said.

"It was as though the police had been expecting trouble.

"They were all in their riot gear.

"In my experience, low-key policing creates a relaxed atmosphere."

One fan tweeted: "Chaos on the concourse, fans and police in genuine fighting, missiles thrown, charging the police back, batons drawn, utter mayhem."

The match, which city won 1-0, was attended by 23,441 people.

South Yorkshire Police said fans were escorted to the railway station and not the tram network, as is usual practice.

A force spokesman said: "South Yorkshire Police officers attempted to arrest an individual in the West Stand concourse during half- time and drew batons when surrounded by a large group of Hull City supporters.

"Batons were drawn for the safety of officers and club stewards in this particular incident, not in response to any chants from the Hull City supporters.

"The individual was later arrested as officers escorted the group of Hull City supporters to the railway station.

"The force is aware of chants from a small number of supporters relating to the Hillsborough disaster but no action was necessary as part of the policing operation."

Russia : Police Arrest 24 After Zenit-Anzhi Violence - 10/10/2012

Source : http://en.ria.ru

Twenty-four people have been arrested in raids after Zenit St. Petersburg fans beat up supporters of Anzhi and attacked a bus, Russian prosecutors said Wednesday.
The incident shone a spotlight on ethnic tensions between fans of North Caucasus-based clubs such as Anzhi and those from other parts of Russia.
Around 30 people reportedly attacked and beat up three fans of Anzhi in a St. Petersburg fast-food restaurant on August 22, as well as throwing flares into the restaurant and a nearby bus.
Three days earlier, Zenit and Anzhi had played out a 1-1 draw in Makhachkala.
The arrests were made in raids across the city on October 10, prosecutors said. The investigation focuses on the offence of hooliganism, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.
Zenit fans have a record of racist behavior at matches and involvement in racist attacks. Former coach Dick Advocaat has said that the supporters' attitudes were the reason Zenit is the only major Russian club never to have signed a black player.
The Anzhi fans involved in the clash were reportedly on their way to see their team play AZ Alkmaar in a Europa League match in Moscow.
At the match, Anzhi fans were subjected to racist abuse from supporters of Moscow teams angry at Anzhi using Lokomotiv Moscow’s stadium for the match.
European football's governing body UEFA banned Anzhi from hosting European games at their home ground for security reasons.
After the violence in St. Petersburg, local police and community leaders from St. Petersburg’s Dagestani community met to calm tensions.
Dagestan is one of Russia’s poorest regions and has a lengthy record of terrorist attacks, prompting many to migrate to cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Italy : Genoa fined over Serie A fan disturbance - 11/10/2012

Source : http://www.fijitimes.com

Serie A club Genoa have been hit with a 30,000 € fine and striker Giuseppe Sculli banned for a month, the disciplinary commission of the Italian league has announced.

The sanctions relate to dramatic incidents during Genoa's league game at home against Siena last April when hardline 'ultra' fans, having seen their side concede four goals, began to cause trouble in the stands.

Fans launched flares and demanded the shirts off the Genoa players' backs because they deemed the players not worthy of wearing them. All of the players, except Sculli, gave in to the demands.

Sculli, who is known to be the grandson of a notorious Calabrian mafia boss, then went to the stands to negotiate the return of the players' shirts.

The on-loan Lazio striker negotiated personally with the apparent leader of the ultras and after a delay of around 45 minutes the game resumed and went on to finish 4-1 in Siena's favour.

Genoa, fearing violent reprisals, then moved camp to Milan for the days leading up to their next league fixture.

League bosses had originally sought a 300,000 € fine for the club and a ban of three months for Sculli. The prosecutor claimed Sculli had known all along about the planned protests.

A statement on www.legaseria.it on Tuesday said the disciplinary commission had considered sanctioning the entire team, but decided to ban only Sculli because of his "personal role" in the matter.

Football fans face ban from grounds - 11/10/2012

Source : http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk

FOOTBALL fans who cause trouble at Darlington FC games will be issued with anti-social behaviour orders and banned from all Northern League games, say police.

The warning follows isolated incidents of violence at several Quakers matches this season.

Officials have praised the behaviour of the majority of fans but police have been called twice to away games involving the club, first at Dunston UTS last month and at Billingham Town on Saturday.

Chief Inspector Chris Reeves, from Durham Police, said: “There have been no instances of large scale disorder at the Heritage Park ground, although there have been a number of isolated incidents involving a small number of Darlington supporters, one of which took place at the Billingham ground.

“We are keen to stamp this behaviour out, so we are working with the club with a view to banning the supporters who were involved in this incident from the Darlington ground, and to obtain antisocial behaviour orders to ban them from all Northern League grounds.”

Northern League chairman Mike Amos last night welcomed the stance being taken by the police.

However, he said it could be difficult to keep the troublemakers out of games, adding: “It’s one thing keeping them out of Darlington home games when these people are known and there are stewards and possibly police.

“It’s rather another trying to enforce it at games where they are not known and where there maybe are no stewards and certainly no police.”

Mr Amos said league officials would talk to the police about enforcing anti-social behaviour orders.

A fight among Darlington fans delayed the kick-off by about ten minutes on Saturday.

Police were called but no one was arrested.

Mr Amos added: “While the four or five people involved last Saturday created extremely unpleasant scenes for about a minute, once the game started the behaviour of the fans was exemplary.

“In my view, some good can come out of this, with 99.9 per cent of Quakers fans determined to ensure their club is a fans’ club and a family club.”

The club, which is playing in the Northern League after being demoted four divisions by the FA, confirmed it was working with police to identify the troublemakers.

A spokesman said the club was grateful for the support of police and the Northern League to tackle the issue.

England : Hillsborough disaster inquiry could see officers tried for manslaughter - 12/10/2012

Source : http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk

AS many as 200 officers could potentially face being quizzed over the 1989 tragedy which killed 96 Liverpool fans.

Season 12/13 - October - Page 2 187861LFC

THE “biggest ever” inquiry into police conduct during the Hillsborough disaster will be launched – and could see top officers tried for manslaughter.

In another step towards justice for the 96 Liverpool fans who died, the Independent Police Complaints Commission yesterday announced a far-reaching probe focusing on the 1989 tragedy.

It has cited as many as 200 officers – serving, retired or deceased – who they want to identify as potentially being implicated in wrongdoing.

The investigation will also be the first time that the potential misconduct of officers in the years following the disaster has been officially scrutinised.

It will look into allegations that misleading information was given to the media in a bid to divert blame from police on to fans.

The questioning of grieving relatives about alcohol consumption will be examined, as will checks made into the possible criminal backgrounds of victims.

IPCC deputy chair Deborah Glass said investigators will look into 164 amended and deleted statements from officers at the match.

She added: “The aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy has never been investigated.

“Justice demands we do whatever is possible to investigate culpability for any offence that may have been committed and to do so thoroughly and fairly.”

The huge inquiry comes as the Department of Public Prosecutions confirmed they had asked the Crown Prosecution Service to consider all the material which has emerged from the recent study into the disaster.

They will try to determine whether there is enough evidence to charge individuals or corporate bodies with a criminal offence.

South Yorkshire Police and West Midlands Police are to be examined, although it could take years to reach a conclusion.

Top-level charges against those in control of policing the game could include manslaughter.

Also to be probed is Sir Norman Bettison, Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, who has come under fire for his part in the disaster since the damning Independent Hillsborough Panel’s report last month.

The top cop, at the time with South Yorkshire Police, will be probed over whether he helped to “deliberately deflect the blame” on to fans.

It also emerged yesterday that Bettison may have tried to influence the decision-making process of his police authority dealing with the probe. No precise details were given, but the IPCC said: “This is a serious allegation. We will independently investigate it.”

However, MP Maria Eagle called for his immediate suspension and said that his role in Hillsborough was more significant than he has publicly claimed.

Eagle said: “I was staggered to see another referral of him from West Yorkshire Police Authority for trying to influence their decision-making with the previous referral. He ought to be suspended.”

The IPCC insisted that retired officers found to be criminally implicated in Hillsborough would not escape the full force of law.

Glass said: “We can investigate criminal and misconduct offences after an officer has retired, though retirement prevents any misconduct sanction.

“The families have waited for 23 years. I want to give them my assurance that we will do everything in our power to investigate these disturbing allegations.”

Home Secretary Theresa May has agreed to direct resources to a dedicated Hillsborough team.

Margaret Aspinall, who lost her 18-year-old son James in the tragedy, said: “The truth came out last month, now it’s the turn for justice to show its face.”

Tranmere Rovers fan banned for 10 years for telling police he would 'rip their heads off' - 12/10/2012

Source : http://www.itv.com

A Tranmere Rovers fan, who threatened a number of police officers, telling them he would “rip their heads off” and “destroy” them, has been jailed for 18 weeks and banned from attending all football for 10 years.

David Ross, of Dickens Close, Prenton, appeared before Shrewsbury Magistrates on October 1, having pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words and behaviour, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

The court heard Ross, aged 40, had been drinking throughout the day after travelling to Shrewsbury on Saturday August 25 - the day Shrewsbury Town played Tranmere Rovers.

British Transport Police officers were on patrol at Shrewsbury railway station awaiting the return of the travelling Tranmere fans following the match which had kicked off at 3pm.

At around 5pm, officers were made aware of about 15 Tranmere fans that were drinking in a public house near to the railway station. They were described as drunk and noisy and it transpired none had actually attended the match.

At about 5.10pm, a number of this group started making their way onto the railway station forecourt to catch their train home.

Officers were speaking to one of the men in the group to establish the intentions of the group and direct them to the correct train. While officers were speaking with him, other members of the group became involved and a BTP officer had cause to speak with one man who immediately became obstructive.

Due to his behaviour, other officers went to monitor the situation which began to deteriorate.

Ross then became involved in the incident. He was drunk and his manner was instantly extremely threatening as he began swearing at the officers and acting aggressively towards them.

He told one officer he would bite his face off, while yelling at others “I’ll destroy you” and telling another “I’ll rip your head off”.

Other officers had to help detain Ross using leg restraints before he was taken to custody where he assaulted an officer and was further arrested for that offence.

In interview when sober, Ross admitted he could not remember events due to being intoxicated but when shown CCTV footage, he described his own behaviour as a “drunken mess”.

At court he was jailed for 18 weeks and made subject of a 10-year football banning order.

PC Kirk Smith, of BTP, said: “The stringent conditions of the football banning order show just how seriously the courts, and the wider criminal justice system, view this type of behaviour.

“We do not apply for banning order lightly and do not want to alienate football fans, as the vast majority are well-behaved and a credit to their clubs.

“Sadly, as in this case, some people are prepared to step out of line and seem intent on causing problems.

"When this happens BTP will not hesitate to step in and take action against those who cause problems before, during or after football matches.”

Denmark to make racism complaint after Bulgaria match

Denmark are to complain to FIFA over alleged racist chants directed at defender Patrick Mtliga during their 2014 World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia on Friday, the Danish FA (DBU) said.

"We will not tolerate racist abuse at our players," DBU spokesman Lars Berendt told Bulgarian state television BNT1 on Saturday.

"We know that the referees and the match delegate are familiar with the chanting and expect FIFA to take action."

A number of home supporters allegedly aimed monkey chants at Mtliga who came on as a second-half substitute at the Vasil Levski national stadium in the 1-1 Group D draw.

The Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) were fined 40,000 euros (32,288 pounds) by UEFA for racist abuse by fans in their Euro 2012 qualifier against England in September, 2011.

Match suspended after fans riot

Ivory Coast and fans have been escorted by police out of Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium after Senegal fans rioted over their team losing the African Cup of Nations qualifying match, which was suspended on Saturday.
Didier Drogba had just scored his second goal from the penalty spot for Ivory Coast to lead the second-leg match 2-0, and 6-2 on aggregate, when violence erupted.

A fan ran onto the pitch heading for Drogba before his kick and was stopped, and after the goal Senegalese supporters began lighting fires in the stands, causing a haze of smoke over the stadium.

The Senegalese Press Agency reported one of the match officials was hit by a projectile.

Senegal fans attacked Ivorian supporters and police fired tear gas into the stands.

Dozens of Ivorian fans were encouraged to evacuate onto the pitch, where both teams congregated in the middle.

The match was suspended in the 76th minute and abandoned 45 minutes later.

Cars were driven onto the pitch to take away Ivorian fans, to try and prevent them from being attacked by angry Senegalese, and the Ivory Coast team was hustled out by police holding shields.
